Think supercars and you immediately think Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani and so on. You might throw a Koenigsegg into the mix, maybe an Aston Martin, and definitely the Bugatti Veyron. Digging deeper brings up McLaren, Maserati and the like, all well known names in the world of supercars in the 21st century. A recent scan through the adverts in a classic car magazine reminded me that these are not the only names to contend with. Simmering beneath the surface are a raft of small volume makers who are hoping to break into the market. Have you heard of the Minotaur, for example? What about Noble? These – and many others – are fascinating machines that deserve a mention. Let’s have a look at some of the lesser known supercars, and see if we can sing their praises high enough.

The Minotaur – Vision Sports Cars Stunning Supercar

Never heard of Vision Sports Cars? Neither had we, but the Minotaur – not a great name – deserves a mention. You might well ask why anybody would spend their hard earned cash on one of these when there are Ferraris to be had, but surely exclusivity is a bonus? The Minotaur is – after all – as exclusive as it gets. Built by a small company in the UK the Minotaur is not sure whether it is an out and out performance car or a luxury tourer. With leather and Wilton carpets in the interior and a throbbing 5.7 litre Chevrolet V8 it promises great performance, and it looks the part too. The purists will sneer at a car that comes from a kit car builder – that is what Vision’s main business is – but everyone has to start somewhere. Fancy one yourself? If so there is a 2009 model on sale for the bargain price of £24,995 ($40,000) – try finding something else as rare as this for that little.

Ascari – Great Name, Great Car?

Since the year 2000 Ascari has been producing some stunning supercars with limited commercial success. It is far from easy to get a foot in the door to this lucrative market, and without a true pedigree the chances of making it are unlikely. It’s an interesting parallel that Pagani used the name of the great Juan Manual Fangio when marketing the Zonda (Mr Pagani is, in fact, an ex-Lamborghini man with a long history in the automobile world) just as Ascari has drawn on the name of one of his great rivals, the double world champion Alberto Ascari. The main product – the KZ1 – is a good looking machine that is credited with excellent build quality, stunning performance and superb credentials all-round, but although it is a hand-built machine that can top 200mph it looks expensive at almost £250,000 ($400,000). The company planned to build 50, but quite how many have been sold is open to question. Still, great engineering and classy design deserves to be recognized.

Spyker – Another Old Name Revived

It may not be a name that instantly springs to mind when talking of automotive history but Spyker was renowned Dutch car and aircraft manufacturer formed in the late 19th century. With a history of innovation there is much to be said for those early cars, but it’s the modern incarnation of the company we are interested in. The car we want to concentrate on is the Spyker C8, a model made in a bewildering variety of forms. The future of the company is in grave doubt, however, as financial problems have reared their ugly head. Of the small volume supercars the C8 is one of the most accomplished offering excellent performance from an Audi V8 in a stunning body, and these are sought after cars that will endure. Handling is excellent, they look quite sensational and quality is second to none. Spyker remains an example of the difficulty in getting into the supercar market, and one that is a cautionary tale for aspiring Ferrari-challengers the world over.

Noble – A Success Story

It is perhaps unfair to list Noble among the ‘unknown’ supercar makers for this is one company that appears to have got it right. With a long list of excellent models in its past, starting with the 2001 M12, Noble may have been the most direct competitor for Ascari, had that company prospered. The current model, the M600, it is interesting that the M600 bears more than a passing resemblance to one of its closest competitors, the McLaren MP4-12c, for the concept is similar. This is a fine handling car that is intended to bring the driving experienced back to the driver, as it eschews to some degree the modern ‘driver aids’ that make 21st century supercars anodyne to some. The Noble is an excellent attempt at getting to grips with the supercar and it should go down in history as one of the success stories in a field littered with failures. It is, at once, exclusive, desirable and a quality product.

Supercars are the stuff of legend, especially where the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini are concerned. It could be argued that the Pagani Zonda has secured a place in that legend, too, but what about the four contenders mentioned above? Destined to play a minor role, they are nevertheless noteworthy machines with a deserving appeal. It is left to the smaller specialists to provide the interesting diversions from the main stream, just as it has always been.

Carroll Shelby, who died last week aged 89, was a giant in the automobile world. An accomplished racing driver in his own right – notably with UK marque Aston Martin in both Grands Prix and endurance racing – he can be credited with changing the way sports cars were viewed in America, in the rest of the world.

In an era dominated by typically large and lazy machines that were more boulevard cruiser than sports car Shelby shocked the establishment when – as importer of niche UK manufacturer AC Cars – he created one of the most legendary of all cars: the AC Cobra, also known as the Shelby Cobra.

Using as a basis the pretty and very capable AC Ace, Shelby came up with an idea that was, in its day, as original as it gets. Quite simply, he had AC build him an Ace chassis that would accept a 4.2litre Ford V8. The result was nothing short of sensational.

Of course, things weren’t quite that simple and there were further modifications needed, but with the Cobra came the promise of genuine high performance motoring, something that appealed to engine donors Ford in their battle with the Chevrolet Corvette.

The 427 – King Cobra

Many enthusiasts consider this early version – the Mark I – the most desirable of the Cobras, and with a rich competition history to go with it the car was guaranteed a strong following. On the road there was little to match it for outright performance.

Ford’s interest in the Cobra resulted in direct collaboration with AC and Shelby in order to produce the later models, the Mark II with a bigger 4.7 litre V8 and, ultimately, the mighty 427 Cobra with a 7.0 litre V8 power plant. With wider arches and a more beefed up body style, this is the model that is generally emulated by the many kit Cobras that are available on the market today.

Curiously, the Cobras competition prowess – a special coupe version had been produced to increase efficiency in airflow – angered none other than Enzo Ferrari who became frustrated at the Anglo-American cars ability to beat his specially built 250LM model. He had the Italian authorities re-classify some races in order that the Cobra was no longer eligible!

Speed Limits And 186mph

Consider that we are talking about the mid-1960′s – the 427 Cobra was introduced in 1965 – and the performance figures take some beating. The standard 427 gave over 420bhp and propelled the Cobra to over 160mph, with acceleration figures that were simply untouchable. The full on competition version was tuned for almost 500bhp and 185mph.

Indeed, racing driver Jack Sears decided to test the figures for himself in 1964 in a Cobra Coupe. He did so on the newly-opened M1 motorway. Legend has it the car hit 186mph. The tale that this incident prompted the imposition of a 70mph speed limit is not entirely true, but it certainly had an effect on the laws that followed.

Despite the success of the car and its popularity with owners the AC Cobra was not a money maker. In 1967 Ford and Shelby reluctantly pulled the plug, leaving AC to produce the 289 version in small numbers for another couple of years. The chassis was eventually used for the subsequent AC 428, a luxury cruiser with quite colossal performance, but AC struggled in the poor economic climate and the company was closed in the early 1980′s.

The Later Cobras

The Cobra lived on in Shelby’s ‘continuation’ cars that appeared in the 1980′s, while Autokraft in the UK had bought the tooling for the cars from AC and made its own versions. These were known as Autokraft MK IV thanks to Shelby owning the rights to the Cobra name. The appeal of the car lies in its enduring style and good looks, as well as fine handling.

Kit versions of the car have appeared in many different forms and with a variety of alternative engines, but for many the original is the only one to have. Cobras now fetch extremely high prices and are sought after by collectors, and in the world of classic cars are among the must-have models.

Carroll Shelby had a rich and eventful life as both a motor manufacturer and a racing driver, and enjoyed a lifelong association with Ford. He was responsible for the amazing Shelby Mustangs, another example of giving a car more power to make it go faster, and continued his involvement with cars – and the Cobra – until near the end of his life. With the modern car being a technical tour de force it is unlikely that his like will be seen again.

Using a VIN Checker is a vital part of buying a car – especially when you are spending a great deal of money on your pride and joy – but...

Using a VIN Checker is a vital part of buying a car – especially when you are spending a great deal of money on your pride and joy – but which is the best service? Many people insist that Carfax – a long established name in the world of VIN checking – is the way to go, but we have heard that another player in the market – Auto Check – may be setting the standard.

Of course, with VIN number checking it’s all about finding out the history of your desired purchase. There is nothing as disappointing as finding out that your beautiful new machine has been involved in an accident, and both Carfax and AutoCheck lay claim to giving you the best information available. There is more to VIN number checking than simply accident history – indeed there is plenty of information out there that you want to know.

The practice of rolling back odometers had been with is for many years now and is difficult to uncover, especially if the dealer or seller has been clever with their efforts. However, both AutoCheck and Carfax are able to do so by looking back through the complete history of a vehicle, and checking against current records.

An accident damaged car may well have been repaired to a high degree, but what lurks underneath? Is there damage to the chassis, or to the unseen parts of the car, and what has that accident done to the value of an expensive vehicle? How easy it is to buy a lemon, and end up losing a lot of hard earned cash in the process. Fortunately, it is easy to use the AutoCheck VIN number checking package, and it can be done for free.

Enter Your VIN and Get a FREE VIN Check!

So, Carfax and AutoCheck go head to head, but which is really the better option? Let’s have a look at an AutoCheck v Carfax comparison.

What do I Get With AutoCheck?

The standard packages from both providers are pretty comprehensive but on closer examination it would appear that the AutoCheck deal may be the better one. Why is this the case? We compared the two and found that there was much more on offer with the AutoCheck deal – here’s a starting point:

With AutoCheck you can get not only unlimited reports, but a single report costs less than $30. This undercuts Carfax, which does not offer an unlimited reports option.

There is also a wealth of detail that AutoCheck offers as standard.

Have a look at this:

- Full vehicle report including odometer check, accidents and more;
- Mobile based reporting on iPhone or Android;
- Free Auto Check scoring system for ease of analysis;

AutoCheck is a part of the Experian group, hence it offers powerful access to records.

Looking at that list it is easy to see why many people choose AutoCheck over Carfax, even though the latter is a long-established name in the VIN checking world. Furthermore AutoCheck offers data on past auctions – your car may have been sold at one in the recent past – and also provides a full report from the NADA (National Automobile Dealers Association) Used Car Guide, a valuable resource.

Given that Carfax does not give auction information, does not provide a NADA guide, is not allied to Experian and does not include auction data in its package it looks like it may be on a losing roll.

So is AutoCheck The Better Deal?

The one thing the two packages have in common is that they both offer a buyback program. This is a regulated agreement by which the company agrees to buy the vehicle back if the information provided proved inaccurate. This is an important part of a VIN checking service and is to be applauded. Carfax has a good reputation in the world of car dealing and its experience is not to be doubted, and it does have many satisfied customers with plenty of good words to say about it.

There is something to be said, however, for the all in one approach that the AutoCheck VIN checking service offers. There is much more it does have, compared to plenty that Carfax does not, and this is bound to attract many more customers as AutoCheck becomes better known in the market.

Perhaps the major draws are the fact that AutoCheck is part of Experian – a well known brand – and that it offers so much in the way of value that Carfax doesn’t.

In concluding the Carfax v AutoCheck review it is fair to say that brand loyalty will keep many people in the frame where Carfax is concerned, but as the package is so much more rounded the AutoCheck deal is going to attract a great number of new customers.

Buying an expensive used car is something that has always been prone to problems and pitfalls, and it would be wrong of us not to recommend that potential buyers – whether they are about to buy a modern supercar or a classic model – invest in the affordable and comprehensive AutoCheck VIN checking system, which may just be the best on the market.

Australia’s Number one Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ News and Forum Website gt86.com.au was invited for an exclusive interview with Toyota 86 lead engineer Tada-san by Toyota Australia. The 86 is said to be a game changer for Toyota Australia and is expected to bring in a large number of buyers that are new to the brand. gt86.com.au has been in existence since hours after the production version of the Toyota 86 was announced in November of 2011 and has been very active in gathering Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ enthusiasts and fans from Australia through its frequently updated website and <a target=_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://gt86.com.au/forum">forums, as well as its very popular <a target=_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://facebook.com/gt86aus/">Facebook page.

The video interview with Tada-San was carried out over Google+ and a number of interesting questions were asked. At the end of the interview Tada-San also showed off his very own orange Toyota 86 to the gazing eyes of the enthusiasts from gt86.com.au. Whilst showing his 86 Tada-San said his favourite part was the 86 logo and the way that the lines contoured along the side of the body. He was very pro dud and it was not hard to see his excitement and the fruits that five years of development had bared.

<img style="margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px" align="left" src="http://www.thecarlabs.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/toyota86tada.png" alt=Toyota 86" title="Toyota 86" width="300" height="186" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1325" />The interview revealed that there will be a TRD version of the car in the future, but interestingly all the parts that will be added to the TRD version will also be backwards compatible with the standard Toyota 86, meaning that there is no need to wait for the TRD version. Stocks in Australia as with the rest of the world are said to be extremely limited, making those lucky ones that get a Toyota 86 or Subaru BRZ from the initial shipment part of a very exclusive club in Australia. At least those who are not so lucky can share in their experience through the community at <a target=_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://gt86.com.au/">gt86.com.au

The Ferrari 365GTB4 Daytona is one of the most iconic cars of all time. The classic front engine layout was a Ferrari mainstay, but at the time the mid-engined supercar was becoming the way to go. With a neat touch of nostalgia, mixed with advanced 21st technology, Ferrari has announced the F12 Berlinetta, a replacement for the outgoing and unloved 599.

So is the F12 Berlinetta the new Daytona? Yes, and no; this is in fact Ferraris most powerful model of all time, and takes the front engine supercar theme to a new level. Clothed in an admittedly beautiful Pininfarina – of course – body, this is one of Maranello’s better efforts of late, and sold well when introduced at the 2012 Geneva Show.

That the supercar market has gone through many changes lately is without doubt, and the influx of Koenigsegg, Pagani, McLaren and other pretenders to the crown, plus the resurgence of Lamborghini under new owners the VW Group, Ferrari has had to up its game. This is how it decided to do so.

The Most Powerful Ferrari Ever

With 730bhp from a stunning 6.3 litre V12 engine the F12 Berlinetta packs in more horses than any Ferrari before it. This is not quite Bugatti territory, but that’s not the point of this car. The F12 is promoted as a ‘Grand Tourer’, something that the Veyron cannot claim to be. Nor, for that matter, can the McLaren MP4-12c, or any of the main competitors to this new Ferrari.

There is something of a problem with these claims, though: most people would like to see more than two seats in a Grand Tourer. That is unlikely to deter the buyers, we must admit. The appeal of the F12 lies in its superb technology, glorious looks and quite stunning performance.

So how does the F12 Berlinetta compare to the rivals? Performance wise, this is a very capable car indeed, and one that deserves closer inspection.

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta Performance Figures

The benchmark performance supercar – the Bugatti Veyron – goes faster, and is quicker, than the F12, but you could buy four of the new Ferrari’s for the price of one Veyron. The truth is that a top speed of 211mph (340km/h) is beyond use in all but the most extreme circumstances, and is therefore perfectly adequate. Acceleration from a standstill to 62mph (100km/h) in 3.1 seconds is up there with the very best, and 124mph (200km/h) in 8.5 seconds is pretty spectacular in any company.

Recent developments in the world of supercars have seen greater emphasis on fuel economy and emissions efficiency. For me the idea of a ‘green’ supercar is a paradox, and there can be little that is truly green about a 6.3 litre V12 engine. Fuel consumption of 18mpg and CO2 emissions of 350g/km are, nevertheless, quite impressive for such a powerful machine.

The clever stuff continues with stability and traction control – both very much the norm these days – and the aluminium chassis allows for low weight and an excellent 46/54% weight distribution, a great achievement in such a large, front engined car. Those figures, and the expected rigidity of construction, point to impressive handling, although actual reviews are hard to come by.

The Future of Ferrari

Stories announcing the death of the supercar began surfacing some days ago with the emphasis on limited oil supplies. Things could not be further from the truth. The F12 Berlinetta joins a wide range of superb 21st model supercars – the Pagani Zonda and Lamborghini Aventador to name but two – that are changing the face of fast, luxury motoring.

These days it is all about aerodynamic efficiency and colossal power, but rather than simply competing to see who can produce the most powerful engine, manufactures are finding ways to transmit that power to the road.

The F12 Berlinetta produces a vast amount of downforce at speed – in fact, claims are for more than 75% better than on the 599 – and this enables Ferrari to make the most of the stunning capabilities of the engine. It’s about usability and performance, rather than simple numbers. More and more, how the car performs is the benchmark, and the old 1980′s race to produce the wildest, most outlandish yet generally terrible to drive supercars has been firmly put to bed.

So is the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta a hit? It would seem so and, with the innovative FF and the beautiful 458 is at the forefront of a much heralded Ferrari revival. This could be just what the legendary Italian marque needs.

The news that Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the iconic and seemingly everlasting Porsche 911, had died just a couple of weeks ago left the automobile world bereft of one its most influential figures. Porsche, the latest in a dynasty that has had a hand in car design since the early part of the 20th century, was a bona fide legend, just as the most famous car he left behind can lay claim to such a title.

F.A. Porsche was born in 1935 and continued the legacy of his father and grandfather, but it is for the 911 that he will forever be remembered. Has there – in the history of the motor car – been a vehicle that has gone so firmly against the grain?

The Early Years

When it was first seen – at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963 – the 911 caused a sensation. Anyone looking at the current model would be forgiven for failing to recognize the original. It’s not that it has changed beyond recognition, just that the original was completely free of clutter: no wings, no flared arches, no fancy decoration – just that sleek, stylish roofline and surprisingly long bonnet, a classic shape that could not have been bettered.

That the engine was in the back may have confused some, but it was not the first time Porsche had been involved in an innovative rear engined car: think back to the 1930′s and the mighty Auto Union grand prix cars for the inspiration.

The 911 was an instant success, a sports car for a new generation of drivers looking to put the post-war years behind them and move on, and it soon gained development and improved performance. The first cars featured a 128bhp six cylinder engine and were immediately loved across the world. A primary market was the USA where the previous model – the 356 – had been a great success. An interesting aside was the introduction of the 912, essentially a 911 with the 356 four cylinder engine in place, to appeal to those who wanted a cheaper version.

In fact there is an interesting point of trivia regarding the naming of the car. The original model was displayed as a Porsche 901, and that was the intended name until Peugeot complained. It was pointed out that, in France, Peugeot owned a patent on car names consisting of three numbers with a ’0′ in the middle (special dispensation was given to Ferrari) hence Porsche added the first 1.

Porsche 911 – Increased performance

The first notable upgrade to the 911′s performance came with the introduction of the 911S in this took power output up to 158bhp, and gave the car even better performance. Several new models followed, including the ‘budget’ 911E, but it was the next generation of models, introduced in the 1973 model year, that gave the 911 the first glimpse of iconic status.

The 1973 Carrera 2.7 RS is considered one of the most collectable and desirable of all the 911′s. Power was upped to 210bhp thanks to the bigger engine and the car was given a serious make-over including the addition of the famous ‘duck tail’ rear spoiler. These cars were homologation specials, built so that the 911 could be entered in more valuable classes in motor racing, and performance was quite stunning.

A 3.0 litre version introduced fuel injection to the now venerable engine and raised the power output a little more, but these were so expensive – essentially they were genuine racing cars – that they were built only in a limited capacity, hence their present day appeal.

The success of the 2.7litre engine meant it became very much the mainstay of the model when the next upgrades came, but something even more spectacular was about to happen to the 911.

Porsche 911 – Here Comes the Turbo!

The first major overhaul of the classic 911 shape came with the introduction of a car that has gone down in history as a genuine game-changer in automotive terms: the Porsche 911 Turbo, introduced in the 1974 model year, stunned the established supercar makers in Italy and the UK and raised the bar by a considerable amount. This was a true supercar with quite sensational performance, and it immediately hit the mark.

Purists, however, were left unimpressed as they saw the Turbo’s macho bodywork extensions – in particular the massive ‘tea tray’ spoiler – as a savage destruction of the original model’s beautiful sleek lines. There is some merit in this argument, but it has to be said that the market was changing, and the Turbo was a shrewd move by Porsche.

An increase in capacity in 1978 – the engine now at 3.3 litres – gave a colossal (for then) 300bhp. Acceleration and top speed were sensational and the 911 Turbo was taking the fight to Ferrari, Aston Martin and other worldwide supercar makers with little effort. There was a notable catch in the cars armoury, though: in the wet, and in the hands of inexperienced drivers even in the dry, the 911 Turbo gained a reputation for tricky handling, that rear weight bias making things unpredictable with so much power.

This did not deter the buyers, and it is no surprise that the 911 Turbo remains one of the most numerous supercars on the roads even today.

The Modern Day Porsche 911

It would be easy to write a book on the history of the 911 – and many eminent writers have done just that – but suffice to say that the car went through several incarnations following the groundbreaking 911 Turbo.

These days a 911 (strictly a 997 in Porsche numbering terms) is a completely different beast to that first seen almost 50 years ago. It is a luxury, sophisticated high performance vehicle that comes in many different forms, and appeals to a completely different buyer altogether. It is interesting to remember that the Porsche 928 – first seen in 1978 – was intended as a replacement for the then aging 911. The 928 lasted until 1995, and nobody was willing to let the 911 go.

So, the 911 – a true icon of the motoring road, and a car that has outlasted even its manufacturer’s expectations. By frequently updating the cars specification and introducing more modern versions Porsche managed to keep the car fresh, innovative and popular, and still does. With its 50th anniversary rapidly arriving, look for prices of classic models to rise even further.

If, like many of us, you cannot afford to indulge in a 911, bear in mind that when he left the car company, the late FA Porsche set up Porsche Design, a company involved in designing and manufacturing accessories intended for Porsche owners. You might just be able to afford a Porsche Design pen, or a pair of sunglasses, and be happy that you own something associated with the great man himself.

Readers of TheCarLabs in the UK need to know about a great new event taking place later this year. The brainchild of DJ and TV presenter – and noted petrolhead and car collector – Chris Evans, ‘Carfest’ is a new concept that combines the excitement of a classic car show, classic car auctions, live music and great food into a superb event for all the family!

If you are free on August 25th and 26th you really need to be at Carfest! It is set to take place at Laverstoke Park, in Hampshire, this is sure to be the event of the season for many classic car lovers. Due to appear are many cars from Chris Evans’ personal collection, a well regarded assortment that features a wide range of his beloved Ferraris, Aston Martins, the Lamborghini Aventador and other models from the marque, various Porsches and McLarens and much, much more. This really is going to be a treat for all who attend.

Carfest – A Special Touch

There is something else about the event, something that makes it even more special. Laverstoke Park isn’t just any farm; it is a farm devoted to organic food and boasts an education centre plus a large herd of Buffalo. However, that’s not the really special bit, for the park is owned and run by none other than Jody Scheckter, the 1979 Formula One World Champion!

Scheckter has not only agreed to host the event with Evans but will also be supplying food for the event, which promises to be very special indeed. Not only that, but he will also be displaying his own Formula One cars – from Wolf, Tyrrell, McLaren and Ferrari – plus his amazing and completely mad 200mph ice cream van!

Further to the cars there will be exciting air displays and family entertainment, including a hot air balloon, face painting and a hill climb event for classic cars. Camping on the site is encouraged and the proceeds are in aid of the popular Children In Need charity.

Music For All the Family

For further entertainment visitors can look forward to music from major bands such as Texas, The Feeling, Razorlight, The Magic Numbers and more to be confirmed, and two auctions – one on each day – of a selection of desirable classic cars.

There are few celebrities more devoted to the classic scene than Chris Evans, and it is to be welcomed that he is also including exotics such as the Aventador in the line up. The Aventador, along with a lot more supercars from both Europe and the USA plus a variety of classic F1 machinery, will feature in the spectacular hill climb event.

Food lovers will be able to take a break by heading for the Britain’s Best Pavilion, where 100 stalls will offer a variety of UK made cheese – including Laverstoke’s own Buffalo Mozzarella – and bread, pies, sausages and more, and also some excellent beers!

For the record, a family ticket – two adults and two children – including camping is £170, and that is a very good deal for such a fabulous event. Get your tickets at www.carfest.org, and don’t miss out!

Aston Martin Virage – Basic Information

The Aston Martin Virage was introduced for the first time in 1988. The car was revealed at the Birmingham Motor Show as a Grand Tourer with a front engine and rear wheel drive layout. It stepped in to replace the older V8 models. The Virage was exclusive and hand built and it is said that approximately 1050 of these cars were sold. It was replaced by the Vanquish in the year 2000. The name Virage was changed to V8 in 1996. A new version of the Aston Martin Virage was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011 which will be added to the line-up this year.

Aston Martin Virage – Initial Models

Aston Martin Virage Design

Only 365 Aston Martin Virage units were sold from 1989 to 1995. These initial models were manufactured in 2-door coupe body styles. They had been redesigned from the earlier V8 models with an all-aluminum body and an evolved chassis and suspension. It was similar to a sports car in terms of performance but was still quite large and heavy.

Aston Martin Virage Engine & Performance

The earlier Aston Martin Virage models had a 5.3 liter V8 engine which was capable of producing 330 horsepower. The top speed was 158 mph and they could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds. The most commonly available transmission was a Chrysler 3-speed automatic while a limited number of these cars came with a 5-speed ZF manual option.

Aston Martin Virage – Other Versions

The Virage Volante was a 2-door convertible version of the coupe. This version was manufactured from 1992 to 2000. There are only 296 Volante versions of this car, built and sold. The engine was the same 5.3 liter V8 but the transmission was an improved 4-speed automatic. This allowed the car to produce 354 horsepower. From 1992 to 1996 these versions were sold as the Virage Volante but from 1997 to 2000 they were known as the V8 Volante.

Aston Martin Virage 2011 Revival

The new Virage model is expected to hit the market by 2012. The new model was introduced as concept version last year. The Virage will be placed between the DB9 and the DBS models in Aston Martin’s line-up. The car will be a 2-door convertible and will be available in 2-seat and 2+2 seat configurations.

A 6.0 liter V12 engine will be placed into the new models which will allow it to produce 490 horsepower. The car will be able to accelerate from O to 62 mph in under 5 seconds.

The concept car which was revealed at the Geneva motor Show had attracted a lot of attention. Once the details about the design and engineering specifications were disclosed, it became one of the most talked about models due to come out this year. The Aston Martin Virage was an icon during the 1990s and the automaker believes that the new model will be able to carry on the legacy.

The car has already made a number of media appearances. It was even featured by the famous British motoring show, Top Gear. It has received positive reviews from critics and experts as well. Expectations are high and Aston Martin has high hopes from their latest model.
