The Filson Wheeled Carry-On Bag pictured here combines a soft-sided travel-bag shape with wheels and a pull handle. It appeared in our 2014 coverage at a reported price of $545. That is a historical price, not a current offer; the archived photographs do not establish today’s stock or specification.

Carry-on suitability depends on your flight

Calling a bag “carry-on” does not give it universal approval. Check the airline operating each flight and the allowance attached to your fare, then measure the bag packed—including wheels, handles, pockets and bulging sides. Cabin-bag limits and security rules for the contents are separate checks.

American Airlines, for example, specifies a maximum of 22 × 14 × 9 inches including handles and wheels, and requires the bag to fit its sizer. This is a dated example checked 12 October 2026, not certification of this Filson model or a rule for every airline. Our carry-on size guide explains what to record for your own journey.

Inspect the rolling parts as carefully as the fabric

For a used example, ask for a short demonstration of the wheels turning and the pull handle extending, locking and retracting. Inspect wheel housings, base corners, handle attachments and zip ends. A handsome fabric body is of limited use if a critical moving part cannot be repaired.

Try lifting the packed bag by its carrying handles as well as rolling it. Consider stairs, station platforms and lifting it into an overhead compartment. Check its empty weight before estimating how much of an airline’s weight allowance remains for your belongings. We have not load-tested this archived bag.

What Filson’s guarantee does—and does not—mean

Filson’s current policy describes coverage for material, workmanship and manufacturing failures over the product’s lifetime, subject to evaluation and exclusions. It is not an unconditional promise to replace an old bag forever: the policy excludes, among other things, airline mishandling and excessive wear. Ask Filson about the particular item’s eligibility before relying on coverage for a second-hand purchase.

The current repair page says hardware is stocked for many discontinued luggage items, but does not guarantee a part for this model. It also says bag zips cannot be repaired because of construction constraints. Confirm the repair options for the actual fault before buying a damaged example or commissioning a third-party alteration.

This camouflage Epperson Mountaineering Climb Tote appeared in our January 2014 archive. Its patterned webbing handles and uncomplicated tote shape give it a distinctive look. The original coverage described nylon construction, but its manufacturing-location and “climbing grade” claims have not been independently authenticated for this particular older example.

Separate the archive bag from the current Climb Tote

Epperson’s current Climb Tote listing, checked 12 October 2026, describes a smaller version with 1000-denier CORDURA nylon, webbing handles, a drawcord closure and reinforced stress points. It lists a 14-litre capacity and dimensions of 13 × 14.5 × 4.5 inches. Those details apply to that current listing; do not transfer them to the bag photographed in 2014 without checking its label and measurements.

Does a hand-carried tote suit your day?

Start with your actual load and journey. A tote may offer convenient access when moving between a car and a desk, but check whether its handles allow the way you want to carry it. Do not assume the archived model includes a shoulder strap or that handle length is suitable for wearing over a coat.

Measure a laptop inside its protective sleeve against the usable compartment and opening. A durable fabric does not itself provide a padded device section. Keep liquids separate from electronics, and inspect the actual closure rather than assuming it will contain small items when the bag tips over.

Construction checks on an older example

Look at the base corners, side seams, handle joins and any closure or lining. Ask for photographs of both the inside and the stress points, not only the camouflage exterior. Try lifting the normal load where possible: comfortable empty handles can feel different when carrying books, a bottle and a device.

A water-repellent treatment listed for a current version does not establish that an older tote is waterproof, nor that its seams or opening protect the contents. Follow care instructions for the exact fabric and finish. Likewise, a climbing-inspired name or webbing detail is not evidence that the bag is certified climbing safety equipment.

Compare by useful space, not colour alone

The A Bathing Ape Head Tote Bag in this article belongs to our May 2011 archive. Its prominent ape-head graphic makes the design the main attraction. The original report described three colourways; that is historical coverage, not confirmation that those versions are available today.

Check the bag behind the graphic

Before choosing an older example, ask for its usable width, height and depth, handle drop, opening and closure details. A tote that looks roomy in a product photograph may not fit your device in a protective sleeve, and the graphic tells you nothing about internal pockets or padding.

Decide how you will carry it with your everyday load. Test the handles where possible and check whether the bag can be closed if belongings need to stay enclosed. What to inspect second-hand

Request clear views of both sides, the base, corners, handle joins, inside and labels. Check for separating seams, worn-through areas and damaged handles before deciding which cosmetic marks you can accept. Ask about stains, smells, cleaning and repairs; unresolved answers should remain questions rather than assumed passes.

Look closely at the printed design for wear or changes, but do not treat a matching logo or archive photograph as authentication. If authenticity materially affects the price, decide what independent verification you require. These original photographs show an archive design, not the condition or provenance of a seller’s particular bag.

Do not borrow a modern tote’s material or washing instructions

BAPE’s current Canvas Tote listing specifies cotton with cowhide-leather contrast. It is a different listing, not proof of this 2011 bag’s composition. Confirm the actual material and any care label before washing or treating an older example; a fabric-and-leather combination should not be assumed suitable for machine washing.

This Nanamica briefcase appeared in our Autumn/Winter 2014 coverage. The archived design combines a roll-top-style opening with handles and a shoulder strap, giving it a less conventional silhouette than a rigid office briefcase.

Look beyond the briefcase label

The original coverage described CORDURA nylon, two internal pockets and leather handles. Treat those as archived product reporting: we have not independently re-authenticated the exact fabric grade, coating or specifications of this discontinued-season example. Nanamica’s current company profile describes a utility-and-sports approach, but does not establish this older bag’s device protection or weather rating.

Before choosing one for work, measure your laptop inside its protective sleeve and compare that with the usable compartment and opening. Neither a briefcase label nor internal pockets establishes a padded laptop section. Decide whether the opening is convenient for retrieving a charger, notebook or travel documents without unpacking everything else.

Closure, comfort and condition

Ask a second-hand seller to demonstrate the closure with the bag filled. Check that the fastening still works without forcing an overpacked opening, and look for wear around the handle joins and strap attachment points. Try the strap at your usual carrying height; comfortable hand carrying does not necessarily mean comfortable shoulder carrying.

Do not equate durable fabric with a waterproof bag. Seams, openings and leather components also matter. Follow care instructions for the exact materials and keep electronics protected separately when conditions demand it.

Availability today

The Sandqvist John Weekend Bag in our 2014 archive is a leather holdall with rounded handles, a detachable shoulder strap and a zipped main opening. The original product coverage described vegetable-tanned leather and internal and external pockets. Those are historical specifications for the pictured model, not a claim that today’s Sandqvist range or every second-hand John has identical construction.

Will it hold your weekend packing list?

“Weekend bag” is a shape and purpose, not a promise that everybody’s trip will fit. Lay out your clothes, wash kit, shoes and any device sleeve first. Shoes and bulky layers can use much of a holdall’s space; a separate shoe pouch also keeps soles away from clean clothing. Ask for usable internal dimensions and the opening width if you cannot inspect the bag yourself.

Check the shoulder strap with the bag loaded, not empty. Its length should let the bag sit comfortably without pulling against your arm, and the handles should remain practical when you need to carry it by hand. Inspect the strap attachments, handle stitching and zip ends on a used example, where repeated loading tends to show.

Leather care and wet-weather expectations

Sandqvist’s current care guide separates leather, suede and textile care. Choose a treatment for the actual finish rather than applying a generic fabric spray to leather. Follow the maker’s directions and test a discreet area before treating the whole bag; conditioning can affect appearance. Do not infer waterproof protection from a zipped opening or leather construction.

Buying the archived model

Current stock, pricing and the original zipper specification have not been independently confirmed. For a second-hand purchase, request clear photographs of the lining, base, zip, corners and attachments, plus measurements. Check cabin-baggage suitability against your operating airline’s rules using the packed bag’s external size; “weekend” is not an airline size category.

The Archival Duck Duffel is a compact, cylindrical holdall featured in our 2014 archive. The original coverage described cotton duck, leather trim, end pockets, a heavy-duty zip and a protective nylon base. Its simple opening makes the design worth considering for short trips, but neither its shape nor its name proves that it qualifies as cabin baggage.

Carry-on fit: check the airline, not a universal label

Cabin-bag dimensions are governed by the operating airline’s requirements; security restrictions on contents are a separate matter. For example, American Airlines currently specifies a maximum of 22 × 14 × 9 inches, including handles and wheels, and requires the bag to fit its sizer. That is one airline’s rule, not a worldwide standard or confirmation that this particular duffel fits.

Measure the bag when packed, including bulging ends and anything protruding, and check the rules for every operating airline on your itinerary. A soft-sided bag can exceed its nominal measurements when full. Do not assume that fitting the overhead allowance also makes it an under-seat personal item.

Useful packing and carrying checks

Lay out your trip’s clothes, shoes and wash kit before choosing a size. A cylinder can be easy to load, but access still depends on the opening and how tightly it is packed. Keep items you need en route near the opening and use a separate pouch for shoes. Test the shoulder strap with your normal load and check whether the handles are practical when moving through stations or airports.

Inspect an older example

Look closely at the base, zipper teeth, end seams, handles and strap attachments. The original article’s detailed material-origin and hardware claims were not independently reverified for this refresh, so they should not be treated as a certificate for a second-hand bag. A protective base also does not establish whole-bag waterproofing. Confirm care instructions for both the canvas and leather trim.

Check the frame fit before buying

Measure your glasses folded, including the widest part of the frame and the depth created by the temples. Ask for the case’s usable internal dimensions, not only its external size. The flap should close without pressing against the lenses or forcing the frame; a close-fitting pouch may suit one pair and not a bulkier wraparound style.

Keep grit out of the pouch and avoid dropping loose keys alongside the glasses. A soft leather case should not be assumed to provide the crush resistance of a rigid protective case. If your bag is regularly squeezed under other luggage, choose protection that matches that risk rather than relying on the leather’s thickness.

Leather details: historical reporting, corrected terminology

The original product coverage described 4/5 oz Horween Chromexcel leather. Horween identifies Chromexcel as a combination-tanned leather. That general tannery information does not independently authenticate the leather in a particular old case. The earlier manufacturing-location and military-design-origin claims have not been reverified and are not presented here as established current facts.

Care and second-hand condition

For an older example, inspect the flap fold, closure, stitching and inside surface for damage or rough areas that could contact lenses. Confirm the leather and finish before applying a conditioner, and follow the finished-goods maker’s instructions. Avoid transferring advice for suede or another leather finish to this case merely because all are leather.

The Fjällräven Kånken pairs a box-shaped main compartment with a front zip pocket and simple webbing straps. The navy backpack pictured here appeared in our 2014 coverage. Its appeal is straightforward access and an uncluttered shape; choosing the right version and load matters more than treating every Kånken as the same bag.

Choose the version for your everyday load

Fjällräven identifies the standard Kånken Classic as a 16-litre pack. That figure describes the current Classic, not every Mini, Laptop or other variant, and does not authenticate the exact capacity of an older second-hand example. Check the model label before comparing dimensions or buying accessories.

Make a realistic packing list: device and protective sleeve, charger, notebook, bottle and the extra layer you actually carry. A litre figure alone cannot tell you whether a sleeved laptop fits through the opening. Measure both the sleeve and usable compartment, rather than assuming a standard Kånken has a dedicated padded laptop section. If device protection is the priority, compare the relevant Laptop model separately.

Keep the load comfortable

The maker advises keeping the Classic’s load light rather than treating it as a heavy-hauling pack. Try your normal contents with both straps adjusted before deciding whether the webbing suits your journey. A short walk and a long commute can place different demands on the same bag; we have not load-tested this archived example.

Care without machine washing

For the standard Kånken, Fjällräven recommends hand cleaning with lukewarm water and a soft brush and advises against machine washing. Follow the instructions for your exact material and model: a leather-trimmed version is not automatically cared for in the same way. Avoid turning a light mark into a full-bag wash unnecessarily.
