Also, if you like mashup style music, this song is mashed up in "Hands in the Air" by Girl Talk. Totally awesome.)

My laptop died a couple of days ago, so I ordered a new one. The dead laptop was over 4 years old, so trying to repair it would be worthless. The new laptop got here today and OMG it is so awesome. 4 GB of RAM and an 'Intel i5 processor. So damn fast. So boo and yay at the same time!

Cloudy day = crap picture. I like my outfit though! And check out my new haircut! It's exactly what I've been wanting. When my hair is long, it weighs itself down. I like when it's light and fluffy and you can see the curl pattern.

I went to that state up north (Michigan) this weekend to visit and did a mini-capsule wardrobe while I was there. (Read: traveled very lightly and wore the same stuff all weekend.) So I didn't take any outfit pictures. But here's what I wore last night and this afternoon!

Brown shirt with flowers: Oilily, thrifted
Black leather pencil skirt: thrifted (I KNOW RIGHT?!)
Pumps: Tsubo Acreas via eBay

Blue dress: thrifted
The previews looked a little cheesy, I agree, but the movie was scary and suspenseful, just what I was hoping for. Plus it has Timothy Olyphant in it, who is very cute. (Shane West, you can't hide. I know that you changed your name to Timothy Olyphant and are trying to hit it big again. I have photographic evidence.)
Hmph!)

Yes, I am a music snob. Sad but true.

Anyway. I'm done with winter quarter. Thank goodness because it is by far the hardest quarter to handle, just because of the weather. In the next two weeks I'm planning on lots of home improvement projects, including but not limited to: repainting my kitchen (any cool, soothing paint suggestions?), painting the front door, and possibly starting to garden. We moved into this house last summer when it was too late to start a garden, so I'm excited to start now.

I NEED A TRIPOD. This angle makes my boobs practically look like they are part of my face because I'm looking down toward the camera. At least it makes my pins look longer.

I added a little section to the left panel of my blog for fashion resolutions/shopping rules/goals. The only one I have posted right now is to not buy any more shoes that are black or brown. I have waaaay too many of both. Seriously, my winter shoe collection is Blah City. My summer collection is better, but I'm no Lorimarsha!

Could Lorimarsha (see link above for her Wardrobe Remix folder on Flickr) possibly be any more awesome? I want to be her. BE HER. I guess another fashion resolution is to be more colorful and pattern-y, like Lorimarsha.

Today I'm just home studying for finals. But instead of my usual studying uniform, Beardy's pajama pants and a zip-up hoodie (or other similarly crappy outfits), I decided to wear some color!

I'm wearing:

Red tunic: boutique in Saugatuck, MI

Yellow tank dress: thrifted (brand is MODA Int'l)

Leggings: Rainbow

Purple Crocs: Crocs.com (style is Alice)

I "got a haircut" yesterday. I did it myself. I hate paying for people to stare confusedly at my head, drag a fine toothed comb through my curls, cut my hair straight across at the bottom, shove me under a dryer, and send me out the door looking like an electrocuted poodle. I just trimmed the dead ends off, which were pretty bad because my hair grows very unevenly. I took off at least 2 inches (with curls stretched out). Then I used the ponytail method to put in some soft layers.

The Ponytail Method:
1. With your hand, gather your hair in a ponytail on the very top of your head, making sure it is all combed or brushed very smooth. (It's easiest to do this bending forward like you're blowdrying.)
2. Slide your hand up the ponytail (you should look like a troll).
3. The ends sticking out of the top of your fist are what you should trim.
*To get more dramatic layers, move your ponytail toward your forehead. To get subtler layers, move the ponytail backward.

This has been my summer anthem for the past two summers. When will it get old?!

It is currently 68 degrees (Fahrenheit) outside. Girl, whaaat??! I've got the windows open and the ceiling fan on.

My cats love to sit in the windows when they're open and look outside. I don't think they understand what "outside" actually is. One of our windows is near the back door, and when I go to take the trash out, they seem confused that I was inside with them one minute and the next minute they can see me through the window. Silly girls!

I think this skirt is so flattering worn high on the waist like this. I also wear it as a tube dress sometimes, but it looks and fits much better this way. It's one of my favorite summer garments.

I also love the look of these shoes. They're not particularly comfortable for long periods because the ankle strap is really the only thing holding them on my feet. But I'll be damned if they aren't cute!

Getting dressed is so much more fun when you don't have to bother with dressing for warmth. But it's also a lot more likely that I'll wear a casual outfit when it's warm. Why?

1) A lot of times one of my winter layers is a blazer, which dresses anything up.

2) Many boots are inherently dressy (except cowboy boots or Doc Martens, I guess).

3) Sweaty feet + heels = Blister City

However, it's also likely that I will wear jewelry when it's warm. Why?

1) No sleeves for bracelets to catch on.

2) Necklaces won't be covered up by a bulky scarf.

Case in point: today's outfit. Casual and accessorized.

In the grand reading room at the library I'm wearing:

White roses necklace: won from a blog contest, I think lillyella@etsy

Plaid shirt: thrifted

White tee*: Walmart, $4

Bracelets: blue one: won in blog contest, brown one: my meditation mala, multi one: gift

Jeans: same as yesterday, Delias via thrift store

Slingback flats: Crocs Olivia via Shoebuy.com

*So let me tell you about this tee. I had been looking for some nice, neutral, slouchy t-shirts for summer. I thrifted a nice slub cotton J. Crew tee last summer and wore it probably once a week, I loved it so much.

I've looked at Forever XXI, American Apparel (on Amazon and eBay of course), and Urban Outfitters, and didn't find anything I was willing to shell out for. I seriously hate spending more than $5 on any one item of clothing. So Beardy suggested I go to Walmart - great place to get cheapie basics.

I found these shirts in the junior's section and sized up to an XL to get the right slouchiness. They're nice and thin, tapered for a female form (very important!), and most importantly, cheap. You can order them from Walmart's website for only 97 cents in shipping.

This photo setup seemed to yield a pretty good picture, surprisingly. Since I don't have a tripod and Beardy had already left for work, I just put the camera on the windowsill and sat in front of it. It's nice and bright because there are two nice windows in that room! Ahhh natural light in the morning, how I've missed you.

I'm an idiot. Today makes twice in the past week or two that I've forgotten my wallet and had to have Beardy feed me on his lunch break. Luckily he works fairly near to campus. Unfortunately, I'm already hungry, it's not lunchtime yet, and I haven't had my coffee today. Crank city!

Oh well, at least I've got some bright colors on! Floral embroidery, red shoes, and blue dress, PLUS a red jacket and pink scarf. Maybe there really is something to color therapy after all...

Full disclosure: It's not quite warm enough for sandals outside. But I'm not going anywhere today and it just looks so deliciously sunny outside, so I thought I'd wear a wishful thinking outfit.

Yesterday the weather was so nice that Beardy and I walked to the grocery store and bought ingredients for dinner. It was about a 3 mile walk there and back, and it felt great to get some fresh air and some pre-dusk sun. I sort of felt guilty that we've not done it before - it's only 3 miles!

The colors in this picture are a little off, so I will do my best to describe them. Nothing I'm wearing is the same color as anything else, though it might appear so in the photo. I don't match, I "go" (as Stacy and Clinton would say).
I was planning this great tattoo that had a nod to Lewis Carroll's tale (my favorite since childhood), but now if I get it, I'll have to explain that no, it's not because of the movie. Oh well, maybe next year.

So even though I have a bone to pick with Tim Burton, I saw his movie anyway. I enjoyed it a lot, but really, nothing will ever top the Disney animated version for me, with its quirky songs and charming little creatures.

Helena Bonham Carter was my favorite character - she made a kick-ass Red Queen! Can you imagine what kind of relationship she and her husband Tim Burton have? I wonder how their home is decorated...

I don't know why, but this outfit felt like sort of a nod to Wonderland (or Underland, as it is called in the Burton version). I think it's the light-blue-ish sweater with puff sleeves that reminds me of Alice's dress.

As soon as I got home today I scrambled into a pair of sweatpants, so all you get is a foot picture. Sowwy!

These are my practical shoes. I wear them for comfort, not really for looks. When I wear them, I feel like I am in the Hills of Comfort looking down my nose at the peasants in the Valley of Stilettos and Uggs. Is that mean? Probably. After all, I wear stilettos sometimes. But they don't know that!
Okay, so today is not a high fashion day. But it is a day of curiosity (why isn't it curiousity?) and wonder. Why, when I wear my boyfriend's plain old Hanes v-neck tees, do I resemble an American Apparel model (sans nipple flashing), while when donning my own v-necks, I appear to be nothing more than a boring old frump? Please, enlighten.
I went to a trial makeup run with my friend, the future bride, and the makeup artist used primer on her. I became curious: could this help prevent my mineral makeup from smudging on everything I own? So, budget diva that I am, I went to Target and bought the cheapest primer I could find, Rimmel Fix & Perfect. I use it over moisturizer and under mineral makeup, and my skin looks great. Totally recommend it. (Not being paid, just really like it.)
Now that you've just been hit with a wave of 80s nostalgia:

To enjoy canneloni and a trip to the cinema I wore:

Patterned scarf: Urban Outfitters clearance, years ago

Tan faux-wrap top: thrifted

Black belt: garage sale, 25 cents

White tunic tank: thrifted

Boyfriend jeans: Levi's, hand-me-up from little brother during growth spurt

T-strap pumps: Payless

I thought I'd try out the pegged baggy jeans and heels look I've seen on many street style sites and on celebrities lately. I really liked how this turned out, except for the fact that I had to walk outside in the snow in these very revealing shoes. It wasn't the most practical outfit, but I'll suffer for fashion every now and then.

I'd like to try a similar look, but with trousers instead of jeans. I haven't been to the thrift stores in a while, but next time I go I'm going to look for some front pleated trousers, maybe high-waisted, that I can roll up and create a peg look. The first time I saw this look was on Style Bytes (I MISS IT SO MUCH) here. And I've never forgotten about it, as you can see.

P.S. We saw Shutter Island, which I have been anticipating since I saw the first trailers, probably about 6 months ago. It was great! I recommend it if you like psychological thrillers, like Memento or Identity.

P.P.S. I've been putting together a post about how to be eco-friendly even if you're on a budget. It's not entirely about fashion, but is anyone interested in that? I would post it sometime this week I think.
For the past couple of days, I've been taking them in the same room as before (it's my favorite paint color in the house), but I don't think I'm loving the angle. The problem is that I don't have a tripod, so I'm balancing my camera precariously on a little cabinet thing, which as you can see is located catty-corner to my photo locale.

I'm also working on getting some better-quality pictures up in here. I changed my ISO speed and am trying to not use the flash. But I'm still a rookie, so bear with me.

To get a 100 on a calc quiz (more good grades!) I wore:

Handmade crocheted beanie? beret? Etsy

Plaid shirt: Old Navy, thrifted

Gray long tank: American Eagle

Jeans: Levi's (different pair than yesterday, but same style)

White boots: Dr. Martens Zena, eBay

Close-up of my lovely boots.

I thought this outfit was comfortable and funky, but not as cohesive as I like. I think it's the gray layering shirt that mucked it up for me. I like the idea of this outfit, let's say. The boots, though! The boots are great. It has been sprinkling snow all day and these have a superb amount of traction. The leather is supple and doesn't pinch or rub anywhere.

And when I got off the bus and was heading to campus, I passed a man on the sidewalk who was maybe 60 and very stylish in a feathered fedora and long wool coat, and he told me he liked my boots! He was the first (non-boyfriend) person I had talked to today and it made my morning.

Guys. School has been gettin' me down. It's been one of those weeks where you have so much to do you think there can't possibly be a way to get it all done in time. At one point I was like, "THAT'S IT, I'M DROPPING OUT." (But I didn't.)

And then today, I met with a professor about the programming assignment that was boggling me and got my score back from the calculus exam I took last night and the clouds cleared:

My professor basically said the word "boolean" to me and my lightbulb went ding! And now I can totally figure it out on my own. It'll be a day late, but hey, better to do it right slowly than turn it in without finishing it.

I got an A on the calc exam!!!

From a different angle I wore:

White tank tunic: thrifted

Brown "renaissance" tunic top: Old Navy, but thrifted long ago

Black leather (suede) vest: Wilson's Leather deadstock via eBay

Jeans: Levi's

Gray cowboy boots: Dingo, thrifted

My knees are looking a little baggy, maybe I should wash these jeans. Anyway, I like this outfit. I felt cute and sassy all day, especially since I was wearing a really cool knit beret with it. (It's handmade, from Etsy! Picture forthcoming.)

I think this outfit looked better with my purple glasses because they added the pop of color I felt I was missing. But alas, when I got home from campus, I showered** and then put this back on to take a pic. Hence, no makeup, wet hair, glasses-lessness.

**I showered because I had to buy new shampoo and conditioner today and I, a bona fide product junkie, couldn't wait to try them. I'm trying to start only using sulfate-free shampoo and 'cone-free conditioners. I'm a little nervous (change! aaaah!), but it's healthier, so I'll bite.

It snowed all day long. Waiting at the bus stop was misery. But I did manage to get to the gym today, which is a rarity when I get really busy like I am this quarter at school. Usually, in busy times, my workouts are the first things to get voted off the island.

I love the summer because things slow down a bit, even if I'm taking classes, and I get to go for runs every morning in the sunshine. Ahhhh, I can't wait to see the sun again.

To accumulate snow I wore:

Target hat

Purple scarf: vintage, mom's

Pink and navy striped shirt: Old Navy

Pink v-neck sweater: NY&Co, thrifted

Skinnies: Forever XXI

Boots: Dr. Martens via Amazon.com

I'm not thrilled with this outfit, but it was comfortable and warm, which are pretty much my only goals when the weather poops on me like it did today. And when I got home after the gym, I immediately took a piping hot shower and changed into a hooded sweatshirt and yoga pants.

Anecdote: Today when I got off the bus to <s>walk</s> scramble from my bus stop to my house, a guy rolled down his window and yelled, "Ugly-ass hat! Take it off!" Really? In a snowstorm while driving, my hat is your number one priority? I'll never understand the people in my neighborhood.

Today has been a wonderful day so far! I was brought breakfast in bed, featuring fresh fruit kebobs, veggie sausages, home fries, and waffles with blueberry sauce! Then I got a lovely card and some chocolates, including Peppermint Patties, my fave! And THEN, we went to get a new stud for my nose piercing. It's been great and I feel so lucky to have Beardy.
(Or a completely normal but enjoyable and relaxing weekend, if you ignore V-day altogether!)

I wanted to show you all a couple of new wardrobe additions that will be debuting on the blog soon!
Thanks Gram!

I can't wait to wear them with skinny jeans tucked in, and I'm thinking they'll even look great with a skirt and tights. Since they have a pointed toe, I'll pretend they are work appropriate and wear them with slacks at my future job. Although, honestly, do computer programmers really follow a dress code? Computers don't really care what you wear...or do they?

2) FIRST EVER HAT OF MY LIFE, from Target

Out of the kindness of his heart, my boyfriend purchased this for me after I tried it on and looked really cute in it. I have been looking for a nice, warm hat that won't totally rumple my curls, and this fits the bill. I do have a knit hat with a pom-pom and ear flaps, but its tight fit makes it a wear-me-all-day-or-don't-wear-me-at-all hat.

Aren't you excited?!?!

Okay, you're right, this was a completely gratuitous post.

(She's helping Kelly decorate for the V-day party, and Kelly, having just been dumped, is tearing hearts in half and taping them to the wall. Meredith tears a Cupid's wings off and says the above. HA!)

My neighbor decorates his yard for EVERY. SINGLE. HOLIDAY. As soon as he took his Christmas lights down, he put up Valentine's decorations. And when there are no holidays coming up (like late summer/early fall), he decorates his yard with sports paraphernalia. I have never before seen such dedication to yard decor. It's wacky, but it makes me smile.

This is what I'm planning on wearing on a V-day date tonight with my beardalicious boyfriend. I'm taking calculus because I'm getting a secondary degree in computer science along with my MA in linguistics (phonetics and computational, if you're wondering). Yep, I am a programmer. And yep, a nerd too.

Disclaimer: I do not program in CSS or HTML, so that's why my blog layout isn't like, totally way cool.
I'm more of a Python, Perl, Java kind of girl. :-)
I always liked it, even when I was a kid.

Today I barely managed to get out of bed. It was just so warm in there and my cat Mony was purring and the house was quiet because my boyfriend had already left. But I have a lot of work to do this week and I can't focus while I'm at home (cats are mysteriously attracted to homework and will sit on whatever I'm working on), so I came to campus. I'm still a little pissed about it.

But at least Lost is on tonight! I'm so excited I could pee. We've been watching all the old seasons on Netflix in preparation to watch the new season. I like watching things after they've been on TV because you don't have to wait a whole week between episodes. I'm all about instant gratification. (I've watched Always Sunny and Dexter in the same manner.)

I'm wearing:

Turquoise and chartreuse sweater: Olo, thrifted *

Black velvet blazer: NY&Co., thrifted

Straight leg jeans: Old Navy

Grey cowboy boots: Dingo, thrifted

I am on a shopping ban this month. I have been quite good about it. The sweater and blazer I'm wearing were thrifted over the weekend, but it was part of a date-day my boyfriend planned for us. We went to the farmer's market for coffee and lunch , then to the thrift store where I was allowed to pick out 3 items (hee!), and then home to cuddle. We had planned to see a movie but I was having some leg pains, which I get occasionally and are totally debilitating.

*Does anyone know anything about this brand, Olo? I Googled and all I could find were some listings on eBay, It seems high-quality but I've never heard of it before.
