This post over at Building Cincinnati is kind of a bummer. It looks like Kevin LeMaster is marking the end of the always-stellar Cincinnati development/architecture blog, and that’s a shame. Too, he seems legitimately distressed about the matter, given the tone and timbre of the post:

Unfortunately, economic realities have slapped me in the face and made me realize that this website is no longer viable.

I need to find a position that pays me on a regular basis. I can’t work full days and earn $2.20 an hour, and have intermittent checks. It just doesn’t work for me.

I’ve tried to make it work. I’ve partnered with Cincinnati.com. I’ve sold ads.

Still, I haven’t been able to make ends meet. It’s likely time to move on.

The only way I can continue is for someone to step up and sponsor the site and pay me a reasonable salary.

I’m not certain whether that’s intentional, as I’ve never met Kevin, and I don’t know him at all, but the post comes across like he’s ending things against his own will. There are a lot of considerations to be made with respect to the kind of work he’s done over at BC, especially given the fact that he’s doing hard journalism there, with photos and all, and he’s pretty much doing it by himself. Beyond that, he’s doing journalism on a level that many of the newspaper folks can learn a thing or two from, and he’s doing it on less than a shoestring budget.

In fact, I’m not seeing why the Enquirer hasn’t bitten the bullet and hired the guy. He all but asks for it:

Let’s Give Credit Where Credit is Due [Go Reds]

I’d just like to take this time to point out that when I don’t write about how well the Reds are doing, they win. Last year I pointed out the fact that they were doing really well, and their season went in the shitter. I’m not going to do that this year.

You’re welcome, baseball fans.

Along the opposite line, I’m finding lately that I’m getting quite a bit of joy out of reveling in the downward spiral in which the St. Louis Cardinals are currently engaged; the weird finger pointing, “bad umpire matchups,” and fans complaining about La Russa being a teabagger (which just seems strange) is deeply fun to watch. As the tension comes to a deafening crescendo and then (hopefully) a silence of the same variety, I’ll still look forward to seeing what La Russa or Carpenter complain about next. There’s an underlying melodrama to it that’s too much to not enjoy, even if it’s in the name of schadenfreude.

So, keep at it Cards. I love this game.

All Right, Kids. It’s News Time.

Okay. Things have been floating by swimmingly for the past few months here at TCM and generally speaking, everything is more or less great. However, we’ve been planning a sort of change in direction for quite some time now, and we’re getting down to the wire on making these changes happen. Of course, this all means bigger changes for you than it does for us; we wouldn’t have it any other way.

So, what you’ll be getting is essentially an experience that’s more audio/visual than article-based. This means a podcast and videos. We’re at no shortage of ideas, as you can imagine, and this bodes well for us in the future. We haven’t really discussed with any great detail the frequency of these audio and video forays, but you can bet that they’ll be regular. So, there’s that.

Another thing that this means for us is that at some point in the near future, you’re somewhat likely to see a break in what we’re posting. This is most likely to happen this time next week. Part of the reason for this break is the above-noted change in direction; the other part of this reason is that I’m having another kid around Labor Day-ish, which is super-soon. I’ll need the time, so I’m taking it.

Comment of the Week, Prize Edition!

So, we’ve been light on the comments over the past week, but it’s the end of August, which means it’s time for the first of those drawings we promised way back when we started CotW in April. Doesn’t seem like it’s been that long, but whatever.

Anyhow, the winner is…

Randy Simes, for his comment on our post on the disappearance of the Provost of Cincinnati’s blog, The Phony Coney:

Maybe The Provost has been summoned for other more important things, or maybe The Great Streetcar Conspiracy got to him. Whatever the reason may be, it sure is a loss because The Provost did some excellent investigative reporting and connected the dots on several complex issues that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. I can’t think of one thing on The Phony Coney that could be held against The Provost legally…seemed like everything he did was within legal realms.
