When did you first realize you were into hair? 

If I’m being honest and true to my roots, I think I first became fascinated with hair when I would play with my cousins’ barbies during A LOT of my childhood. Its’s actually how I learned to braid hair. Though I never got a barbie of my own, I had a few girlfriends who quite literally let me completely destroy their locks in my early teens…

What was  your most favorite hairstyle? 

If this were a slide show I could show you at least five times I had a rat tail, 4 times a mullet and at least one really bad, boozy festival decision mohawk. All of which I hold dear in my heart though they probably wouldn’t make the list of my favorite. In total truth, every time I get the opportunity to get a cut from Crystal, it is honestly my new favorite. She just knows exactly what I’m feeling and can translate that onto my head. How did you get into hair?

As i told Jamie and Jodi when I was going through the interview stages here, my journey here has been a long one, and a fun little internal battle. I spent a long time worrying about what the people in my life would say or how I would be perceived to the world (19-24 are some pretty tricky years). When I finally decide to say “F” it, I quit a high paying job, cashed out a 401K and enrolled in cosmetology school a week later. I graduated a week before my 30th birthday and though it hasn’t been all happiness and bliss, I am so happy to b e exactly where i am today, doing hair and being a stylist.

Where is your favorite place to go on a weekday afternoon when you have no obligations?

Definitely the lake, and before you think “well, sure that’s great in the summer”,  I love going in the winter just as much. It’s really calming sight and humbling to be able to walk out and see this giant, natural body of water. I’ve been here 8 years and I still find it amazing.

What is your favorite movie or fictional character hair?

BELLE

Why do you work at The Circle Salon?

Have you been here?!? The feeling our guests experience is the same one I feel. This industry is filled with the saying, especially as a assistant, “Well thats just how it is, It was the same for me”. Easily translated as, “I don’t have to be kind or like you, it’s not what I got, and it’s not my problem.” When I found The Circle Salon I kept thinking, eventually this will wear away and I will see the true story… The true story ended up being that we all respect and deeply care for each other, the salon and our guests. We even take field trips for quarterly meetings! We once all roamed around a nature preserve together and just enjoyed nature, each other and a ton of laughter. This place is amazing. Truly.

Rita Q&A!

How did you get into hair?

When I was eight I ordered a hair braiding book through my class’ Scholastic order form and made my mom buy a “topsy tail” from a TV infomercial.  I’ve been interested in hair since I was a kid.

I moved to Chicago with an art history degree and ended not working in the field. I’d always been curious about hair school (even while I was in college) and looked into the program at the Aveda Institute. I was given a tour and told it would take less than a year to go through the training and receive my license. I was sold and have been a hairstylist since 2010.

What’s your biggest hair accomplishment?

In 2014 I entered my first hair photo competition for Davines’ World Wide Hair Contest. I was placed in the semi finals as a top ten for all of North America.  Beginners luck!

Why do you work at The Circle Salon?

I chose to go to the Aveda Institute because of their eco stance and initially it was the same with The Circle Salon. The salon is the most eco conscious business I know.  I continue to work here because my co workers are loving and encouraging and we have a great clientele, as well!

What’s the first thing you’d do if you won a million dollars?

I would have dinner at Alinea.

 Which star’s hair would you love to style?

Katy Perry. I love how open she is to color and style changes.

Where is your favorite place to go on a weekday afternoon when you have no plans or obligations?

If it’s warm, I like to take my dog, Kirby,  to Montrose Beach Dog Park. I’ll lay out a towel, have a refreshing beverage and watch dogs play. It’s one of my happy places.

Fun Holiday Hair!

Holiday Hair How-To!

Prep Hair:

Spray Davines texturizing spray all over hair and add Davines texturizing dust at roots. Use 1.5” tapered wand to curl most of hair. Leave out the ends for a more “lived-in” look.

Start on left side of part and place 1 silver bobby pin diagonally towards the hairline and another one, overlapping the 1st (locking them together), diagonally in the direction of the back of the crown.

Continue on, along the front hairline and toward the left ear, using both gold and silver pins and locking each pin together.

Stopping right before the ear is a fun, cute and quick look! You can rock this style just as it is!

OR Continue going around the head, locking pins, around the crown and back up to the right side of the part next to where you started!

Using the skinny end of a teasing brush, pull out hair in between locked pins for more texture!

Put on your cute holiday outfit and have some eggnog!

Bangs are beautiful! Here some tips and tricks on how to style and wear that lovely fringe based on your face shape. All faces are different and not everyone fits into these shapes “exactly”. But either way, one or several of the below suggestion will definitely work for you. So give bangs a try!

Heart shaped face

wider forehead, and smaller jawline and chin

Bang suggestion: Side swept and wispy. The side swept pulls the eyes down to your beautiful eyes, lips and disguises width in the forehead.

Oval shaped face

wider forehead, prominent cheeks, face tapers towards the chin

Bang suggestion: Whatever shape you want! Oval shaped faces look great with most bangs.

Try: Blunt heavy bangs! Always a bold and fun statement.

Square shape face

widths of your brow, cheekbones and jaw are almost equal

Bang suggestion: Soft and rounded lash grazing bangs. Square shaped faces can be softened with a long rounded shape. The roundness of the bangs cancels out the sharpness of the square jaw.

Round face

face width and length measure about the same with the cheeks being the widest point

Bang suggestion: Blunt, heavier and square. Adding a defined sharp line to your face will counteract the roundness to your face, giving you more of an oval face shape feel.

Long face

face is elongated from the forehead to a tapering chin

Bang suggestion: Start bangs farther back and taper diagonally. The angle will bring width to the face, shortening the feel of your face shape.

Styling your bangs!

Product: (beware, start out with the smallest amount, dime size, and go from there. Adding too much product can make your bangs greasy and lifeless!)

Fine hair: add volumizing spray when wet and medium hold hair spray when dry. For a textured look, add Davines sea salt spray at the end.

Curly hair: a light curl cream and then let hair air dry or diffuse. Davines Curl Cream is a light but effective tamer of curl.

Coarse hair: try a stronger hold product like Davines Strong Hold Cream Gel, and oil-based primer, like Davines Oi Oil

Flat wrapping – Flat-wrapping works out any cowlicks at your hairline to help your bangs lay flat.  Flat wrapping works for almost any bang shape.

1. Add your styling products to your wet bangs.
2. Begin drying your bangs from side to side with a flat brush, focusing on the roots.
3. As the bangs are almost dry, comb them in the direction you want them to be styled and finish drying the ends from there.

Whatever bang style you choose, have fun!  Your face shape and hair are unique and beautiful so play around and enjoy the change!

Summer festival season is upon us! Whether it be in form of Roscoe Village’s Burger Fest, Wicker Park Fest or the world famous Lollapalooza Music Festival. ‘Tis the season to pull out all the stops! Warm weather in Chicago is fleeting, so why not make the best of it and go out on those fashion limbs you’ve always want to try…like glitter!

Sunblock

First and foremost, sunblock is a must! It is the number one anti-aging cream you can use for your ENTIRE body! You may not be able to stay forever young, but you can do your dang best to look it by preventing wrinkles, sunspots and even cancer.

10 to 20 minutes without sunscreen will begin to burn a person’s skin. SPF 15 (Sun Protection Factor) prevents the burning 15 times longer, so about 150 minutes. Although, this does not mean SPF 30 will prevent 30 times or 300 minutes of burning. Rather, SPF 15 blocks 94% of the sun’s rays, SPF 30 will block 97% blocking and SPF 45+ block about 98% of the sun’s harmful ways.

Consider the type of sunscreen you should apply depending on your day’s activity, whether you’ll be swimming (waterproof), active and sweaty (water-resistant), or going from car to building (daily). Whatever you do, don’t leave the house without it this summer!

Fanciful Hair Color

Lighter, brighter and colorful!

Hair color can be temporary, lasting only a few washes, or permanent. If you have naturally light hair, you may be able to use a color depositing shampoo and conditioner to stain your hair, otherwise it’s recommended to go the pre-lightening route to add those fanciful colors you’ve been drooling over on Instagram.

Glitter Roots

If you’re not quite ready to commit to color, but like a bit of sparkle in your life, try some glitter in your hair with these steps.

Step 1: Style your hair

Step 2: Hairspray the area you would like to *sparkle*

Step 3: Mix glitter and hair gel

Step 4: Apply with brush to area

Step 5: Sparkle and shine

Undercut

Keep and look cool with a peek-a-boo undercut and a geometric design just above the nape or all around the sides if you have the density of hair to spare.

Low Maintenance

Keep it simple! Top knots, buns, braids and side ponytails are easy to do and will keep it breezy in the hot hot heat!

Frizz Control

The humidity is inescapable and you need to keep the frizz under control. We recommend Davines’ Invisible Styling Serum, Eufora’s Behave or good old fashion hairspray like Davines Medium Hold Hairspray

Bold Lips

A bold lip color is a quick and easy way to make a statement with your look. Just be sure to offset the bold lips with a more natural eyes.

Colored Mascaras

Bright lashes is another bold pop of color to simply define style. There’s a flattering color or two for every eye color.

From subtle, shimmery shadows to flecks of tiny mirrors. This trend can be be part of smokey eye or stand alone and bold. It’s a creative interpretation of tears in wearable art form that also doubles as concealer.
