How to find free sheet music

This is a guest post by Lai Chia Yee. Finding new pieces to learn and work on is essentiel for us musicians, it's like the drug of Santana for us...but we don't always want to spend money for sheet music :D (Am I right ?). Here are a few tips to find free sheet music :

"We musicians are always looking for sheet music to play. New songs and hits are coming out everyday. Nonetheless, not everyone is blessed with the ability to play songs by ear. I know I don't, even after almost 20 years of playing the piano. I, like many musicians still rely heavily oh the sheet music.

When you hear the song that touches your heart, you almost instantly want to play it. Next you go online to search for the free sheet music, only to find that it's like finding a needle in a haystack. Most of the so called free sheet music websites require you to pay. Then, you decide that it is not possible to find the freebies online, you go ahead and purchase the sheet music. Later you notice that the sheet music is not accurate, or you are simply not happy with the arrangement! Are all these déjà vu to you?

Despite what everyone told you, it is true that you can find free sheet music online. Yes, I mean, full version, downloadable, printable, high quality, no-cost sheet music of different genres, including pop, musicals, classical, jazz etc. Why pay for something that you can get it free? Here I will share with you two methods on how you can locate free sheet music from internet:

1. Search engine (SE): Search engines like Yahoo, MSN and Google are the most important tools that can help you to find free sheet music. The problem is, most people don't know how to effectively search for the information they need from the SE. Do you just enter 1 or 2 search terms and give up? Note that if your search term is too generic it may not yield good results. Don't believe? Try typing the term "sheet music" in Google, most of the results point you to paid site! So you have to be very specific with your search term. If I am looking for Kelly Clarkson sheet music, I would search for...

I hope you get the picture. The more specific your search term is the higher chance that you can find the sheet music. Each search terms would usually give you thousands of listings. At times you have to go pass the first few pages to finally arrive at a website that offer free sheet music. It can be time consuming but I assure you that the result will be worthwhile.

2. Websites partners: With the method described above, you should be able to find few free sheet music websites. On the World Wide Web, websites with common themes are often linked to each other. When you land at a sheet music websites, look for links that says “link page”, “link partners”, “Resource”, “Other websites”, “Other links”. You should be able to find a list of website address which point to other sheet music websites.

3. Forums: Forums are great places where you meet like minded people, exchange opinions and seek for advices. There are literally hundreds thousands forums of different niche on the internet. If you are looking for sheet music, why not join some music forums? You will be surprised by the number of people out there who are friendly and helpful. I’ve also noticed that many musicians post links to various sheet music sites on the forums. Do a search on these forums and you should be able to find those links.

4. Notation software: Notation software really makes finding sheet music easy as pie! There are excellent notation software in the market that do a very good job in transcribing the Midi files into sheet music. The whole process is very simple and easy. You open the Midi files with the software, and it instantly arranged it into sheet music format. The good news is that it is very easy to find Midi files of almost any song from the web. The software that I used and recommend are Midinotate Composer and Noteworthy Composer. You can download 30 day trial version from their website. Best of all, they have friendly and supportive forums for their users.

5. Guitar Tabs: this method is suitable if you are good in improvisation. Guitar tabs give you the lyrics and chords of a song. If you are very familiar with the melody and rhythm, the tab can come in handy. Try to play the chords while playing back the song on the radio. This should give you good feel on how to play the song."

Finding the best classical guitar strings !

Today, I'm going to blog about one of the most important part of a guitar : its strings. You have to be very meticulous in choosing them.

Which one do I recommand ?

Well... I can't tell you which string is best for your guitar whitout seeing it. And I certainly don't know what sets and brands will feel just right to you. İt's very subjective : the best strings for you are the ones you like the best.

Here's a way to eliminate the guess work and start using those unique strings :

You have to concider three things as you choose your strings :

- tension (light/low/moderate, medium/normal or high/hard)

- string material (Nylon trebles, carbon fiber, etc)

- string quality. (They musn't go played out too quick and must play in tune)

Which tension should you choose ?

To find out what string tension is best for your guitar, there's no other way than trying all of 'em ! Buy a low, medium and high tension set of the same series and manufacturer. I usually use D'Addario strings, which are at affordable prices and, according to me, are of remarquable quality. You can choose the Pro Arte series J43, J45 and J46 for exemple. Try the three sets out over a few day period. You can Use a peg-winder to change strings.

I think that if you're a begginer, even if you don't like hard tension, use high tension strings because after being accustomed to them, playing with normal and hard tension will be a lot easier. But it's your call, still.

You may wish to try other brands in the same tension. I only used D'Addario and LaBella until now. They're both excellent.

After having chosen the right tension and tried a number of brands, you have probably found some classical guitar strings you are pleased with (hurray !). As a comparison, use the set you like the most.

(May you mind to write a comment on which string you prefer the most after having read this article ? Please, it's important for the readers of this blog to benefit of your experience.)

Experiment different String materials

Other Materials are available on the market : there are the rectified nylon trebles of D'Addario (J29, J30 and J31 sets). Savarez's are fine too.

Try some bronze wound basses. My experience taught me that they tend to be played out sooner than silver-plated strings but they work well for many players.

A third option is the carbon fiber trebles. Their diameter is smaller than the nylon strings, which gives it a brighter sound.

Judging from my experience, they're not the best type of string for classical guitar. Why ?

The only reason is that they produce a sound that doesn't fit to my taste ! (xD You can criticize this as long as you wish).

"If you are have ever gone into a well stocked guitar shop you have no doubt been confused by the selection of guitars. There are literally hundreds of shapes, sizes brands and types of guitars. And the price can range from a hundred dollars to several thousand. .If you are a beginner, judging the sound quality can be difficult to do because your ear is not yet highly trained. Here are some tips to help you make a good choice.

1)Check the size and shape of the guitar

Classical Guitars, of course, come in different sizes and shapes and you should sit with a wide variety of them to get a feeling for what is comfortable to you. Your body shape has an effect on this. If you are over six feet tall the smaller guitars might not be comfortable for you and the fret board may be uncomfortable for your hands. So even if you can't play music you should always hold and sit with the guitars to get a sense of how the different ones feel.

2)Check the mechanics and playability of the guitar

Here are several things you should do when considering the purchase of a classical guitar.

1. Play every note on every string all the way up and down. Listen for frets that don't play properly. They will give a rattling sound and if this occurs on any fret at all you should put the guitar aside and try another one. This is a sign of inferior quality. Every string should play cleanly on every single fret.

2. Check the action of the strings against the frets in terms of how much pressure is needed to play notes and chords. You should play bar chords all the way down the frets to insure good pressure. If it is too hard to press the strings in order to make a clear chord this could be a sign of an inferior guitar.

3. Play harmonics on the strings. This is an excellent test of the quality of the guitar. Playing harmonics is the technique of plucking the note with your right hand and only lightly touching the string with your left hand. Test the harmonics of all the strings on the 5th, 7th, 12th and 19th frets. If you do not know how to play harmonic notes ask the sales clerk to help you.

4. Examine and test the tuning pegs. Do they look clean and sharp? Wind and unwind them while watching and feeling for smooth turning motion.

5. Visually examine the whole guitar. Look it over very carefully from front to back and top to bottom. Are there any small cracks? Are the frets firmly installed into the fret board? Are there any cracks or glue exposed around the bridge?

6. Tap on the front of the guitar (The sound board) in a variety of different spots. Does it have a rich echoing sound or are there spots where it sounds dead and limp? The internal structure of the classical guitar is very important for the sound and important for the longevity of it. Dull thud sounds could be an indicator of an inferior instrument.

7. Examine the details. Look at the purfling around the edge. This is the decorated pattern that goes around the full body where the soundboard or face meets the sides of the guitar. Is it accurately laid in? If this has variations and inconsistencies it is a good sign that the guitar is of inferior quality.

8. Don't hesitate to take a good look inside the guitar sound hole. You will see wooden braces in there. Do they look straight, accurate and well placed? If you see sloppy globs of dried glue around these braces it could be an indicator of inferior craftsmanship.

9. Remember that there are three distinct areas you must consider when purchasing a classical guitar: The Look, The Feel, and the Sound. If you keep all three of these things in mind and carefully examine the guitar in relation to these you will be able to choose an instrument that will bring you a lifetime of trouble free playing enjoyment.

A Classical Guitar is a purchase that can give you a lifetime of enjoyment and you should consider the purchase carefully. Even if you don't plan on playing every day you should buy an instrument that is of good quality so it will maintain its sound quality for a lifetime. And to do this you don't need to spend thousands of dollars you just need to know how to identify a well made guitar."

I would like to add one last thing : even if you're a begginer, and if you're going to buy your first guitar, make a sacrifice and invest in your guitar. It's not worth to buy a very cheap and low quality guitar because soon you'll want a better one !
If you don't have enough money, a middle quality yamaha will be fine.

A crucial factor of producing good tone

The classical guitarist creates music through direct contact with the strings, without the intermediation of any object but his nails. He doesn't use any reed, pick, bow or hammer. Therefore, this interface ought to be prepared properly to ensure a beautiful tone.

The left-hand nails are simple and quick to prepare. They must be kept very short and neat – no irregularities, burrs or bumps. This is because the calloused fingers (and if you play enough, your fingertips will become nicely calloused for pain-free fretting) need to be able to reach in deep, arch, cross over, and stretch to allow neighboring notes to ring and not have a too-long nail digging into the fret board or otherwise interfering. I simply cut the nails with a nail-clipper and then smooth them down with a rough emery board. You do want to be mindful not to cut the nails too short, as this can be painful, particularly when playing for long periods just after you’ve cut them. Thus, if you don’t yet know how your nails react to lengthy playing, it’s better to cut the nails a little less at first and file them. This gives the added benefit of smoothing the nails nicely along the pads of the fingertips.

Proper preparation of the right-hand nails is a must. The warmest, best sound on the classical guitar is produced not by the nail, but by the flesh of the fingertips; the nail is just a back-up for the flesh, to give it support and follow-through. The tinnier sound of nail playing has a place, of course, but it is not hard to achieve. It’s much more difficult to produce a rich, warm tone, so we will concentrate on nail-prep for that purpose. Precisely because the flesh does the work, you do not want the right-hand nails to be excessively long. When looking at the palm of your right hand, they should just be visible above the fingertips. The nails should follow the curve and contour of the fingertip evenly and should not be shaped in any odd way. There can be a tiny exception with the right thumb, where you can shave a little more off the left, outside edge to allow more flesh to contact the strings. This is a personal preference and you will have to experiment with it to see what works for you. As well, everyone’s hand is differently shaped, so these are guidelines, not hard-and-fast rules.

You can either clip too-long right-hand nails with a nail-clipper or use a rough emery board to bring them down. If you used a clipper, then you should employ the emery board to smooth the end of the nail and shape it to match the curve of the fingertip. I also use a metal file at this point to push back the cuticle on all five fingers. This does nothing for the tone, but a player’s hand should be well-groomed.

For the next steps, you will need ultra-fine sandpaper. You may not be able to find it in your local hardware store, but it is readily available for mail order on the Internet. I used Micro-Mesh, but any reputable brand will do. I used 2400-grain, 4000-grain and 12000-grain in a three-step process. After filing, I sand the entire nail, including the playing surface, the outside edge and the top with the 2400-grain paper. The nail will become somewhat smoother, but will still have a basic roughness to it. Repeat the process with the 4000-grain paper and then the 12000-grain, making sure each time that you get deep under the nail, at the edges (remember, no burrs or rough spots) and on top. After the 12000-grain paper, your nails will be smooth and shiny as if someone had lacquered them (don’t worry guys, it doesn’t last long!). They should also feel stronger and firmer. You will immediately hear how much warmer and richer the tone is with right-hand nails prepared in this manner.

How to critically improve your right hand technique ?

"Playing the melody on your guitar with your fingers, as opposed to a pick, is essential for classical guitarists and fingerstyle players. It is, however, a skill that all guitarists should seek to acquire. Some techniques, such as arpeggios (chords that are played by sounding one note at a time, quickly followed by the others) are easier to play with your fingers. Learning to play with your fingers can add a powerful tool to your arsenal as a guitarist.

Alternation

Generally speaking, do not use the same finger to perform subsequent strokes, because it takes too long to ready your finger for a second stroke, whereas a different finger is ready to go immediately. Most commonly, guitarists alternate their index (i) and middle (m) fingers. Alternation, if done properly, feels like you are walking your fingers in place-one finger plays the note; the next moves back to prepare for the stroke that follows.

The Rest Stroke

The foundational stroke used for this purpose is called the rest stroke. This stroke is the optimum way to produce a fuller sound from each individual note.

Execute this stroke by plucking the string so that when you complete your movement, your fingertip rests on the string right next to the one that you played. This resting on the adjacent string gives the stroke its name. The steps for playing the rest stroke are as follows:

1. Place your fingertip on the string to prepare for the stroke.

2. Pass your finger over the string, allowing your nail to catch the string and sound the note.

3. End your movement by resting your fingertip on the adjacent string.

Most importantly, keep your fingers slightly bent. Do not allow your finger joint to yield and flatten as it plays the note. This will weaken your attack. Every tiny adjustment that you make on your technique can improve your tone quality immensely.

Experiment with small alterations, listening carefully for differences in tone. For starters, here is a small experiment to get you going on this process. Approach the stroke from another angle. Allow your fingernail to slide off of the string at a slight angle, your finger slanted in order to hit the string with less force from your nail. This change of your angle of approach, contrasted with the head-on basic stroke, will yield a more delicate tone.

Be patient with yourself. It is much more important to take your time and learn good habits, than to rush this stroke and risk falling into bad habits. Time invested wisely at the beginning will pay dividends of maximizing your overall progress.

The Free Stroke

Used for playing chords, as well as arpeggios, the free stroke is handy to use in instances where you need to play single notes, but the rest stroke is not practical in that particular situation. To play the free stroke, allow your finger to come clear of the next string as its motion ceases. The alternation in the free stroke mirrors that in the rest stroke. When this stroke is perfected, you will be able to produce a full sound with nearly the same tone quality as that of a rest stroke.

When you have learned to play melody notes with your fingers, you will have given yourself a powerful tool on which to build your musicianship. You will earn more respect, and most importantly, build your confidence in your playing."

How to avoid tension

"Classical guitarists, particularly those just beginning their study or those who are working on difficult sections, should try to avoid excessive tension as they play. Tension causes pain, which in turn can cause lack of focus, and ultimately, mistakes.

The following list presents the most common tension points for classical guitarists:

- Hunching shoulders

- Applying excess pressure of the right arm to the guitar. This common problem arises from trying too hard in order to control the right hand.

- Excessive tension in the muscles of the face and neck. The muscles around the mouth, the jaws, and the neck often tighten in sympathetically with those of the arms and hands, during difficult passages.

- Tension in the legs. This generally comes from an improper sitting position.

- Back tension. Excess tension in the back often comes from sitting too long without breaks, or from poor posture. Back tension also enters the picture when the guitarist twists the spine excessively and sits with the right leg extended too far out to the right. Many players also have tension from back problems not related to the guitar. Seek medical attention if you have corrected the more obvious causes stated here.

- Neck tension. Neck tension is usually a result of turning the neck stiffly to the left and trying too hard to watch and control the left hand.

- Tension in the left arm. The common cause for this problem is faulty hand-arm position.

When you have further developed your sense of body awareness your kinesthetic sense, you will be able to gently release whatever excessive physical tension that you discover."

Guidelines to improvise on classical guitar !

"When I was a fifteen years old guitarist playing rock solos and classical guitar pieces I remember that I had a desire to be able to improvise on my guitar in a classical manner.

Nowadays I have developed this skill and I love to improvise in the style of composers like Sor, Tarrega, Paganini or others or just trying to find myself somewhere among the notes. These special moments are a form of meditation. They clear my mind and also helps me as a composer to stimulate my creative abilities.

The most important reason for learning classical guitar improvisation is that it's fun!

If you learn classical guitar improvisation it will benefit you in many other ways too:

1. It will be easier for you to memorize classical guitar sheet music.

2. You will find it easier to compose your own guitar pieces in a classical guitar style.

3. You can make up your own techniqal exercises on your guitar on the go.

4. You will understand your guitar better.

There are many ways to develop classical guitar improvisation.

How?

You can start with major scales, experimenting with easy chords, or easy classical guitar pieces. The most basic requisite is that you want to learn this art and with this desire you will find ways to practice classical guitar improvisation in all your guitar playing.

I will just mention using classical guitar pieces in this article.

But how do you begin?

May I suggest that you begin with an easy melody with just one voice or maybe a two voice piece with bass notes on open strings. Learn a couple of bars by heart and play the melody over and over again and try to change the melody slightly without losing the classical touch.

The ultimate exercise is to use advanced classical guitar solos.

If you think about it you will realize that classical guitar pieces are filled with wonderful licks, more or less complicated.

These licks can be developed and added upon to give you material that will help you developing your improvisational skills.

For example, take a two bar passage in a classical guitar piece that you like and practice it until you master it and then memorize it.

Now you can play around with the passage, break it down, change it, analyze it and so on. If you want to improve as an improvisational guitarist and musician you can regard classical guitar pieces as collections of very musical licks just waiting to be used.

I hope these hints will motivate you to reap the benefits from improvising the classical guitar way. "

How to change your guitar strings

Guitars are highly technical instruments with intricate mechanisms and parts that help produce the sounds that it produces. The guitar's strings are probably the most important part of a guitar's sounds, but many people forget to care for them the way they should be cared for. Even guitar owners who maintain and clean their instruments on a regular basis often forget to maintain or replace the most important part of a guitar's sound - the strings.

Now, how are you going to change them ?

Here's a step-by-step guide :

1. Put the string through the top of the hole found just below the bridge.

2. Pull about 3 inches through.

3. Bringing the string up over the tie block, pass it underneath itself at the original point of entry.

4. Come down over the tie block again and wrap the end of the string around itself in a figure eight type pattern.

5. Insert the other end of the string down through the hole on the capstan.

6. Wrap the string around the back and then underneath itself in order to secure it in place.

7. As described above, begin turning the key with your left hand while maintaining some tension with the other until all the slack is taken up. With a classical guitar you will wind clockwise on the bass strings and the treble strings.

8. Keep the string as straight as possible as it continues from the capstan through the nut and down onto the neck.

9. You should not have any excess string length, but if you do, cut it off.

Learning the classical guitar : why did you start learning it ?

Hello there ! Thank you to give me some of your time to read this post. Don't worry : you won't be totally wasting your time :D

So. Let me explain you why I started learning the classical guitar, at the age of 12 : an old friend of mine who's really a master in blues guitar told me that I should start to. I wasn't very convinced at first, but when I took my first guitar in my hands...BAAM ! Love at first sight :D

A link of love and passion was born between me and my instrument. I can't tell you how today I'm glad and proud of having learning the classical guitar.

Learn classical guitar : how to get started ?

Learning classical guitar can be fun and rewarding (but not effortless !) if you follow this useful guide !

1) Learn classical guitar : choose your teacher, human or words - made ?

Certainly, the best way to learn the classical guitar is to learn it with a teacher.

Can't find any suitable teacher ?

Well, in this case, you have no choice : teach yourself using a classical guitar method. These books are often not just repertoires, but also a resource of knowledge in music theory. The pieces are increasing in difficulty as you progress in your learning.

Start from the first piece of the collection, be patient : you should be able both to handle it technically and like it. Don't get bored of it too quick : it will worth your effort in the end ! (Listen to great guitar solos like "Usher Waltz" and dream that you play them ...)

Having said that, it should be noted that it's good to get pieces that challenge you a little bit. This makes you grow.

A third way of learning classical guitar is the internet : online training courses for classical guitar are available on the web, but I don’t think it’s the best way to learn the classical guitar...

And here comes step no 2 in the stairs you have to climb in order to be the guitarist you wanna become :

2) Learn classical guitar : start from the basics

Before starting to learn a masterpiece like Asturias ( I want to destroy everything around me when I play this piece ! :) ), you should earn some basic knowledge in musicology : solfege, musical terms,etc.

The notion of tempo : Learning the notion of tempo, be able to hear a piece’s tempo and play with the correct tempo is very important as well.

Again, you’ve got several choices : your guitar teacher can help you if he has some music theory knowledge, and is not a "by ear" musician, or ... OUR BLOG !!

Indeed, even if it’s still under construction, this blog is a good resource to learn classical guitar.

Not convinced ? :(

Find some music theory books. A lot are available on the market.

You can also look for digital books : they’re called e-books ( for newbies in the Web xD ). İt’s much more practical to get an e-book than a real book because you download it.

3) Learn classical guitar : Be patient at first

As you begin learning classical guitar, it is a good idea to spend at least half of your practice time doing exercises. You’ll make great progress by processing this way. Indeed, this will help you become more limber on the guitar. You’ll may get bored, but you have to persevere !

It’s the only way !!!

4) Learn classical guitar : classical guitar accessories

You need them !!

Get a Metronome... : If you don't own a metronome, GET ONE! Learn to play slow and in time with it. This way you will form all the right reflexes.Two types of it are available : the electronic kind, and the mechanic one. Well, the mechanic one is in general more expensive, so the electronic one will be fine.

And a tuning fork : the tuning fork is a really good way to improve your ear sensitivity and recognition of the notes when you hear them. When you tune your guitar, make a first tuning with your fork, then check your tuning with an electronic tuner.

5) Learn classical guitar : other accessories

The foot stool : (Nothing to say on that !)

A guitar bag : there are several type of it. You’ve got the Gig - bags, the hardcases and the soft cases, same as the Gig-bag, but thinner.

The hardcase can be very heavy, specially if your guitar’s material is heavy. And the soft case doesn’t protect too much your guitar from shocks. So I advice you to get a GiG – bag : not so heavy and sufficiently proctective. Look for it in Google !

6) Learn the classical guitar : conclusion

Wigmore Hall, London ; 8 pm. Your smoking is a bit tight, you’re nervous : it’s your first concert, after all. At today’s program, masterpieces from Tarrega, Albeniz and Sagregas.

... You let ring the last notes of Recuerdos de la Alhambra and... you hear 2 000 pairs of hands slapping, acclaiming you. The next days, you check your bank account and see, with a malicious smile on the face, that there’s a 5 figure appearing. ETERNAL FAME AND GLORY !!!

İs that a dream ?
