This supplier offers small lots of wholesale return and salvage goods to the public.

Are you looking to buy small quantities of wholesale goods like closeout bedding, lamps or homeware items, instead of a truckload or full pallet?

If so, one of our readers has recommended Great Lakes Auction Consignment, based in Michigan. Molly said that she has found them a better source for merchandise than liquidation.com, and that she particularly likes the ability to buy smaller quantities than an entire pallet.

And I’m guessing that she likes the way Great Lakes Auction Consignment classifies lots into new, returned or damaged items … if her comment that she doesn’t want to buy a whole pallet of damaged coffee makers is anything to go by!

I haven’t used this company myself, but I’m always on the lookout for sources of wholesale goods to share. So I thought I would check out what they offer and summarise some of it on this page to save you some time and research effort. As always, please do your own due diligence and review of any supplier. Great Lakes Auction Consignment (from now on, I’ll refer to them as GLAC) encourages potential buyers to visit or call them, which I think is a good sign.

So here’s what I found out:

All auctions start at a penny and have no reserve.

the company sells store returns and shelf pulls from major retailers

The catalogue for the current weekly auction is available online. I noticed that this week’s auction has a wide variety of merchandise, but includes quite a few lots of returned and closeout bedding (sheet sets, pillows, blankets, comforter sets and airbeds) and lamps. There’s also sporting goods, electronics, toys and aquarium supplies … I’ve listed a sample of the lots currently available at the end of this page so you can get a quick idea of the type of goods available.

Bids can be made online or in person.

The company prefers that goods are collected in person as a local pick-up. Buyers outside the state of Michigan can arrange to have items shipped through PakMail

Goods are classified as new, returned or damaged, with definitions of each category on the GLAC website. The company warns that damaged goods are for experienced buyers only, as some items may not be repairable. Buying only new goods obviously overcomes this problem. However, you may remember that in the past we’ve advised that returned items can sometimes be better … at least you know it wasn’t some dreadfully unpopular product that didn’t sell … with returned goods, a customer somewhere wanted it enough to buy it in the first place!

GLAC sells wholesale quantity lots to the public, so you don’t need to be a licenced wholesale buyer to participate in their auctions. You just need a valid credit card for bidding approval.

Great Lakes Auction Consignment seems like a good source for small lots of merchandise. They do sell pallets and truckloads of returned and salvaged merchandise too, if you want to buy in bulk.

This Week’s Auction

(closing in 3 days)

Here’s a list of a few of the lots available for sale in this week’s auction by Great Lakes Auction Consignment to give you a flavor of what’s available without having to review the entire auction yourself.

(Tip: I find it useful to print out auction catalogs so that I can quickly circle items I’m interested in … and then go back to the online catalogue for a closer look at any photos etc. Copying and pasting into a Word document and then editing can also be a good way to narrow down the list if you are only interested in sporting goods or bedding or some other category of item).

I said there was some return and closeout bedding this week, like the following lots:

Lot# 3068G	High Bid: $11.00
Returned Bed And Bath. Selling closeout goods can help increase your profit margins dramatically and should be given serious consideration as a product source for any dollar store owner.

By purchasing shelf-pull or overstock items, you will be able to offer items that are not generally found in other dollar stores. This is a truly great angle that you can use to differentiate your business, and get people shopping at your location and spreading the word!

While you may not be able to consistently offer the same selection of liquidation merchandise, you can help build a reputation for your store as a place that has limited time offers on discounted goods that cannot be found so affordably anywhere else. It’s a great way to get people to keep coming to your store, checking to see what you’ll offer next. Also, as is typical in dollar stores, once you have them through the door, they’re likely to find something relevant to them and buy it.

This approach also provides a great opportunity for generating big profits by purchasing liquidation seasonal goods off-season, and then keeping them until the market is hot again. Purchasing small seasonal items that will not cost much in storage is a way to try this out if you are on a smaller budget. For example, many Christmas ornaments/decorations that are not large in size can be bought cheaply after the Christmas season and held until next November when they will be popular again. This is of course true for items geared towards Halloween, Valentines Day and basically any holiday that the mainstream public decorates or buys goods for.

Also, you can purchase general below wholesale dollar store merchandise through a variety of closeout companies as well. There are several mentioned in our guide, Wholesale Liquidations Exposed.

Of course, if you’re purchasing items for a dollar store, you have to make sure you know exactly what you’re getting, as people will expect their goods to be in good condition. Stay away from salvage goods, and stick to overstocks, shelf pulls and other good quality closeouts. Communicate with your source so that you know exactly what to expect. As always, you may want to consider a few small purchases until you trust that the goods you will be receiving are of the nature you require.

Three Questions You MUST Ask A Potential Supplier

Closeout Education

Investigating

Start Up

Closeout Merchandise

How To

Liquidations

Overstock

Salvage

Shelf Pull

So you’ve found the wholesale source you were looking for, or perhaps you are still deciding between a few sources, attempting to narrow down the potential choices as to who to place your order with. Either way, before you pick up the phone, or take the plastic out of your wallet, here are three questions you must ask your supplier. The answers you receive can help you decide whether to go ahead with a purchase, or can help differentiate similar suppliers from each other.

“What grade is the merchandise?”

Closeout merchandise can vary drastically in quality, and so it is imperative that you have the seller describe in as much detail as possible the type and quality of products you’ll be receiving. Remember, there can be significant differences between the myriad types of liquidation merchandise – salvage, shelf-pull, and overstock are all definitions you should make yourself familiar with before picking up the phone. You can check out our post on liquidation terms if you are new to these or simply need a refresher.

It is important to verbally ensure that you and the seller are on the same page when it comes to the quality of the merchandise, as descriptions can sometimes be (purposely or not) misleading. You may wish to ask if there will be many repeats (many of the same exact items) since, depending on your outlet for selling, it may be difficult to sell multiples of the same item.

“Is There A Return Policy?”

Are returns accepted? Under what conditions? Who pays for shipping on returns? Many closeout sellers may not offer returns, which again makes it imperative that you ask specific questions about the quality of your liquidation lot and conduct the appropriate due diligence on the supplier.

“Hey, How About A Discount?”

Okay, you don’t have to ask this one, but the real question is why wouldn’t you? Don’t be afraid to negotiate! In this business, few things are set in stone, and the worse a business can do is say no! Also, how about “If I order more can I get a better price?” Take a minute to find out if your supplier will give you a better price based on volume – if you’re not ready to by a large volume yet, at least you’ll have a good idea of what you might be able to save on future purchases.

Additionally, if a company has too high of a minimum order for your taste (or your budget), don’t be afraid to try and negotiate that down.

Keep in mind that by asking these three essential questions, you will be able to get the most out of your supplier and greatly benefit your closeout business.

Offering Superior Customer Service for Improved Sales

Closeout Education

Marketing

Start Up

customer service

wholesale marketing

Offering superior customer service is a desirable goal for any wholesale product provider, but why is it that few manage to actually deliver on this promise? Beyond uttering the basic greetings of hello and thank you, there are several customer care tactics that will significantly help your business and your employees produce superior sales performance when working with the public.

Customer Service – The Human Factors

First and foremost, a solid customer service approach requires being proactive with your customers. Being proactive in this case means going the extra mile, beyond smiles and other salutations, to an environment that exudes caring, sincerity, and efficiency, as well as expert product knowledge.

If you have employees, strive to make sure that they possess the same proactive zest for the company’s success as you do. This can be accomplished by having regular company meetings to get everyone updated on the latest developments and providing incentives for achieving high customer satisfaction.

Another important factor that is often missed in communication with customers is the ability to take the necessary time to listen and ask the right questions. It is common to see a sales person talking, and talking, and talking some more. However, in order to display active listening skills, it is essential to get into the mind of the customer to find out such details as:

What type of product are you looking for? Are you looking for a specific style, brand, manufacturing year, etc? Would you consider an alternative product having similar features?

By engaging the customers to specifically address their wishes, you will be able to gain their trust and respect, leading to a higher likelihood of a successful purchase.

The above points are very important for effectively engaging with customers. However, it is equally crucial to not come across as too aggressive, as there’s no doubt that we’ve all been turned off at times by a pushy salesman. So while it’s okay to push a little, try not to push them right out the door! The key is to tactfully observe when the customer is reaching a saturation point, and just before that, allow them some room to analyze what they’ve heard and seen, before agreeing to going ahead and finalize the purchase.

Customer Service – The Technical Factors

Customers hate to repeat themselves, and feel valued when we remember their preferences and dislikes. The good news is that you do not need to be a member of Mensa to remember every customer, you need only to take notes! Keep notes on any pertinent data that will make future interaction with your customers as personalized as possible. This information should be organized and readily available (at the tap of a few keystrokes), so that it is handy whenever a customer should call or visit.

Repeat customers will be highly impressed with the type of service they’re provided, as most other wholesale providers are not as detailed with personalizing and customizing their customer service. The time taken to enter and maintain a customer record will be worth it, and can be done with relative ease once the customer departs the store or hangs up the phone. If you have a wholesale e-commerce website, the customer profile section will provide a seamless method of collecting this practical information into a database for future use.

Bring It Online

Correspondingly, it is important to have an online presence, where customers can gain more information about your business and the wholesale products you are selling. Who hasn’t “Googled” a company before giving it a call? Most of us have, so it’s surprising that only 56% of small businesses have a website!

Since a website is a great marketing tool, push yourself to go beyond simply offering an online profile page, such as a LinkedIn or Facebook page, with just your business name, street address, phone number and email address. The professional look of a full fledged site vs. a simple page could make all the difference in attracting customers.

If you run the type of company that answers the same questions over and over, then consider adding a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page to your site. Moreover, include sections on your site for shipping and return policies and add plenty of testimonials from existing customers. Notably, when adding content to your site, keep in mind all of the customer service tips mentioned above, to create a true and consistent sense of helpfulness in describing your business offerings.

Also, you can grow your customer base by increasing your web presence, basically using simple steps such as targeting your local customers through the addition of your company to Google Places.

Remember, word of mouth is actually stronger now than ever. That’s because we have so many ways to easily communicate with a wide range of people. It takes only a few seconds to blab on Facebook about a bad customer service experience! Thankfully, it also only takes a brief amount of time to tweet or blog about a good experience! So, whether you’re dealing with one of your most lucrative customers, or a prospective client who is seeking a small purchase, always treat every customer as if they are your biggest and best.

Sell Your Liquidation Goods Online By Setting Up An Ecommerce Store

Closeout Education

Marketing

e-commerce

liquidation merchandise online

selling closeouts

wholesale marketing

When creating an e-commerce website, you gain the flexibility of offering your products to a much larger audience. Truly though, many who sell liquidation goods are a little timid when it comes to going online – they fear that they have neither the technical know-how to run such an operation and that the costs of starting up will be too high to make it worthwhile. However, although that may have been the case at one point in the past, today’s reality is that an impressive, well converting website can be set up both inexpensively and with little technical knowledge.

Here’s what you will need to establish an online presence for selling your liquidation merchandise:

Choose and Register a Domain Name

If you’re confused on where to start, well, first thing’s first – you need a domain name for your website (you know, a web address such as www.yoursite.com). Probably the most advertised and popular place to find and register a domain name these days is GoDaddy.com. There you can see if your desired domain name is available, and then proceed to register it. Also, unless you’re also looking to get hosting or other products from Godaddy, you can skip all the upsells that they will try to offer you. Keep in mind that your domain name should not cost more than ten dollars, unless you’re going with a rare extension – e.g.: .biz, .mobi, etc.

Pick a Web Hosting Provider

All website owners require web hosting, and there are lots of inexpensive, high quality web hosts that can provide more than enough resources and features for building a new website. I suggest seeking a host that offers 24/7 365 phone support, as it’s best to be able to receive assistance via voice (rather than live chat), if you should need technical assistance. Also, search around for a host that offers complimentary templates as well as shopping cart service. It’s best to contact potential hosts ahead of time, especially if you foresee requiring significant assistance, so that you can confirm that the site you have in mind can be supported as well as to discover whether any tools or advice are offered to help you along.

Put The (Shopping) Cart Before The Horse

Some of you may be looking to simply have a website as an advertisement for who you are, and for prospective customers to read about your wholesale product offerings. However, I would think most of you would also like to give potential customers the opportunity to purchase goods directly from your website. This is better than operating by phone, as it means that you can make sales even while you sleep. Your web host may offer a free shopping cart or be able to recommend one to you. Be aware that most of these shopping cart applications offer a wide variety of features, but if you have specific needs, verify that they are indeed supported by the software you choose. Common shopping cart software include Zen-cart, Volusion, CoreCommerce and a host of others.

Apply for a Merchant Account

Now if you’re going to sell online, you’re obviously required to accept payments, and most customers will prefer to pay by credit cards, which means you will need a merchant account. Merchant accounts can be obtained through your banking institution or via various companies online. Once you purchase a shopping cart software, their representatives will be able to provide you with assistance and detailed information on integrating your merchant account with your shopping cart. Also, keep in mind that you may need a payment gateway provider (such as authorize.net) to properly process your customer’s payments online.

Unique Product Descriptions with Photos

Clear, professional photos and unique text that describes your products will provide a huge advantage in how well your site converts visitors to customers. Take the time to write exciting descriptions and provide as many details as possible, as this will help users find you using search terms and will also make you stand out from competitors.

Don’t Forget Customer Service!

This means not only having a very easy to find “Contact Us” page but also letting customers know when is the best time to contact you (your business hours) and alternative contact arrangements (such as email). Remember, by using the Internet your customers may originate from anywhere in the world and, therefore, contacting you during what is considered the norm in your local timezone may not be convenient for some of your prospective clients.

These are the main requirements for offering your closeout liquidation merchandise through your very own website and, when done right, should result in a significant boost to your sales.

Is This Wholesale Liquidations Supplier Reputable?

Closeout Education

Start Up

buying wholesale

factory closeouts

Liquidation Merchandise

salvage goods

Shelf Pulls

Wholesale Closeouts

While there are many professional and reputable closeout suppliers to be found, unfortunately there are also many unethical wholesale business operators and even downright scammers that you need to be aware of. Therefore, before you make an investment in any kind of wholesale goods, make sure to take these tips into consideration:

The first and perhaps most important rule for new buyers of wholesale liquidation merchandise is to research, research, research! Don’t make the mistake that many folks do and rush into your first wholesale investment only to later discover that you’ve jumped the gun and made a risky transaction. If practical, try to conduct your first transaction with a company that is in your local area. By doing so, you will be able to see the available goods before deciding whether or not to make the purchase from this wholesale supplier or a different one.

Ask questions – Even better, research terminology beforehand and ask SPECIFIC questions. Know the difference between shelf pulls, factory overstocks, salvage goods other types of wholesale merchandise in order to have a good idea what to expect. Also, ask specific questions about the condition of the merchandise, and the variety offered. For example, if buying a lot of clothing, you probably will want to ensure there is a strong variety of styles included in your lot, and not simply hundreds of the same shirt, with a few others thrown in.

If you have already found a company that sells what you’re looking for – you’re not done yet! Take additional steps to ensure that it is a legitimate company. Don’t hesitate to ask for references, as solid companies should have customers that are able to vouch for them. You may also want to ask to see a copy of their business license or request their tax ID number – not that these are hard to get, but it is a little added confidence that you are not dealing with a fly by night company that won’t be there to offer you support in a few weeks time.

Also, you can use the Internet to search what other customers have said about that business, including any outstanding complaints. A couple of sites you can check out include ripoffreport.com, the Better Business Bureau website as well as the various online forums where the wholesale industry is discussed.

Now that you’ve ensured that the company you’re dealing with is reputable, learn additional information about completing a successful transaction by reading our article on purchasing closeouts safely.

Wholesale Handbags – How To Tell The Real From The Fake

Closeout Education

Investigating

closeout education

wholesale designer clothing

wholesale handbags

Despite the fact that there aren’t any laws prohibiting the purchase of fake designer clothes and handbags, it is illegal to deal in the sale of such items. This means that those of you who are looking to resell designer merchandise need to be 100% sure that you are getting the real items. In order to do so, there are some tell tale signs you can watch out for to avoid the fakes:

First consider that you get what you pay for:

While some merchants price their counterfeit merchandise at normal prices, as to avoid suspicion of selling fakes, many sellers offer rock bottom prices that are, frankly, too good to be true.

Product Quality Matters:

Besides price, quality is usually the clearest indicator that an item is not authentic. Very few replicas will have a consistent high level of quality, especially in comparison to the fine detailing of real wholesale designer bags. For instance, there will be no stitching errors or mistakes on the authentics. And the material itself will clearly be of a higher grade. Detailing on the bags should appear flawless.

Consider the location of the seller:

Generally, when you conduct rigorous due diligence, you can come across a variety of good quality merchandise from overseas suppliers. However, when it comes to designer fashions and bags, it is necessary to be more vigilant with sellers from overseas, as many countries do not have the same strict intellectual property laws that we do, which leads to an increase in counterfeit goods.

Too many of the same model available:

Any wholesale goods supplier that offers a a single item in large quantity should be researched further. While you might be able to buy a large lot of wholesale Coach handbags, it’s very unlikely that a supplier would have a large inventory of a single model of a Coach handbag. This, except in rare circumstances, would indicate that the goods are illegitimate.

Presence and Quality of Monograms:

Many high end fashion designers monogram their goods. For any designer good you are interested in selling, take some time to research their monograms (including their appearance and their likely location). If the goods you purchase do not have the right monograms, you have a sure fake on your hands.

Locating legitimate wholesale designer handbags and clothing can be a difficult task. It may take further investigation to ensure that you are only buying (and selling) real designer merchandise. The good news is that if you are careful and patient you should be able to purchase quality designer merchandise that is both legal and will be much appreciated by eager shoppers.

Starting Out Buying Wholesale Goods On A Limited Budget

Investigating

Start Up

minimum purchase

wholesale suppliers

It’s no secret that startup capital has become increasingly hard to obtain. If you’re looking to get your feet wet in a new business arena, unless you’re flush with cash, this is an important issue that needs to be addressed.

Most of the companies you will be looking to purchase from have what can seem like a substantial minimum purchase requirements for those starting out with limited funds. So, the issue at hand is: How can someone without significant funds begin selling wholesale merchandise? Well, the truth is there are some techniques for making purchases which don’t require the stated minimum purchase amounts.

Communicate Effectively, Politely and Honestly

Call the company you are wanting to purchase from and let them know that while you’re a startup company that is currently unable to commit to their minimum order, you do have plans to not only offer them your repeat business, which could be quite profitable for them in the long term and that you’ll also be making larger orders in the future.

It is very important to call and speak with someone, as emails are too easy to say “no” to, or simply ignore altogether. Even if the first answer you get is a rejection, try other companies as well – your business is valuable and there will be reputable companies who want it. The prospect of larger orders in the future and repeat business is hard for any supplier to turn down, so do not give up. Additionally, do not lower your standards of companies you will buy from, or take unnecessary risks with companies that do not seem reputable.

Be Prepared To Give A Little

Usually the more you buy, the cheaper the prices wholesale companies are able to offer. This goes to say, if you are looking to purchase goods at below a minimum order you may be asked to pay a little more. As long as the increase is not substantial and will still allow for you to ensure a healthy profit, this may allow companies to sell to you despite not making their minimum order requirement.

Consider A Dropshipping Agreement

If you’re starting out with a very low budget, you may want to consider dropshipping as an alternative. Dropshipping generally does not require any minimum order, as you are not actually purchasing merchandise in advance, but on an ‘as sold’ basis, where the supplier ships the merchandise directly to your customers. This can be a viable option if your goods will mainly be sold online or via catalogs.

Using the above 3 approaches should get you on the right track for selling wholesale goods on a limited budget.

Selling At Flea Markets

Start Up

Flea Markets

sales venues

selling closeout merchandise

This blog is not just about sourcing closeout inventory but it also explores different venues in which to sell such goods to the end user. One such venue to consider, with a sustained track record of decades, is flea markets. In this post we’ll explore flea markets as a good place for selling products.

First of all, consider the various flea markets available to you. Depending on where you are geographically, you may have access to specialized flea market events as well as more general flea markets. It can oftentimes be much more profitable to sell at specialty markets, rather than general markets where anything goes. The types of specialized flea markets that are available include: arts and crafts, antiques, clothing and accessories and more. So if you’re located in an area where flea markets abound, take the time to do research and see if you can find some that are dedicated to the kind of products you’re trying to sell.

An easy way to find flea markets in your area is to visit greatfleamarket.com.

On your mark, get set, go… Having a booth in close proximity to the entrance can help you increase sales since you’ll get more exposure than more remote booths, especially if it is a large market. If buyers need to walk past your booth (well, hopefully they’ll actually stop at it) on both their way in and way out, you will definitely improve your chances for sales relative to other booths that a buyer may only see once and potentially forget about. Furthermore, be ready to sell as soon as the doors open – it is said that the first hour and the last hour of flea markets are when vendors should expect to make the bulk of their earnings.

Keep your table full! If your table starts to look a little sparse, it will turn buyers off as nobody wants to feel like their buying picked over merchandise. Having your merchandise organized beforehand will allow you to easily replenish the products as they begin to sell. You may not need to have all of it out at one time, but it is a good idea to keep your booth stocked throughout the day. An empty booth and sparse tables will turn potential buyers away. A colorful, well-stocked, professional looking table is much more appealing to buyers than one which looks like its on its last legs.

Leave some space! Have you ever been to a flea market where you were bumped and squeezed against the table as foot traffic tried to get by? If people are uncomfortable when they are browsing they will be less likely to stick around and buy, so make sure that your potential customers have room to comfortably view the merchandise without being run over by other customers.

Plan an adequate supply of money as well, so start the day with plenty of change! Don’t rely on change from your early sales to make enough change for later sales, as that usually doesn’t work out. Ensure that you have at least a few hundred in twenties, tens fives and so on, as well as at least ten dollars in the various coins. When you do it this way, you will be confident in your ability to make change for any transaction.

All merchandise needs to display a clear price. While many folks who shop at flea markets will prefer to haggle, they would also like to know the “starting point”. If you fail to tag certain items with a price, you may find that you lose sales as it will scare off some buyers who speculate the price is higher than it actually is. Tags and pricing signs should look new and sharp as reused or less-than-presentable tags will make the products appear of similarly substandard quality.

Offer a deal – “I’ll give that to you at 10 percent off” “Buy two and you can have thirty percent off”. Leave wiggle room so that you can make such statements – this forces the prospective buyer to communicate with you (whether it’s a ‘yes’, ‘no’ or ‘maybe’ response) and can help turn casual browsers into actual customers.

Check out the competition – If you’re selling t-shirts for ten dollars, but another vendor is selling similar t-shirts for half that, who do you think is going to get the sales? Make sure to take time to scope out the competition (or have a helper do it) to make sure you’re not pricing yourself out of the market.

Lastly, don’t forget the bags. Hopefully you’ll start with lots at the beginning of the day and very few at the end!

Is It A Good Time To Sell On eBay?

Ebay

Marketing

closeout marketing

where to sell

The so-called world’s online marketplace, eBay, is oftentimes a tough market for sellers, especially in the face of highly competitive niches and a track record of rising listing fees. However, there are still plenty of active buyers on eBay and so, if you are able to source closeout products that do not have high competition on the site, you could make quite a nice return. I say this in light of a recent announcement that eBay will be making changes to their final value fee (FVFs comprise a large portion of the company’s profit, as it is added to every item sold) by altering it to reward those who offer cheap shipping on their products.

eBay must be trying hard to attract, keep and perhaps even re-attract sellers as they are also going to make auction style listings free of charge (for up to fifty items per month), as well as make the “BIN” or “Buy It Now” button/option free (initially) on those auctions. Sellers will be charged for the listing and BIN option ONLY if their auction is successful, so if you do not sell you do not get charged. Notably, while these changes are for sellers who do not have an eBay store, those who do have a store will still see reduce FVFs.

Sellers can look forward to seeing these changes implemented between April 19 and May 23. Furthermore, come July 6th, there will be a decrease in the final value fees for non-auctions, fixed priced listings.

eBay is also making changes to improve both the seller and buyer experience on the site, such as an updated shopping cart and continued discounts for sellers that eBay considers “top rated”. There are a few changes that sellers may not appreciate and one specifically that you should keep in mind if you are considering selling on eBay for the first time — sellers who are new to eBay or do not have much of a history on the site will see that buyer payments to them are delayed for a set time period to better ensure that the transaction is successful, and more so that the buyer actually receives the item. While this may help to cut down on fraud, it is an inconvenience to new sellers, and so if you cannot afford to wait for payment you will need to take this into consideration before listing on the site.

You can read more about these changes on the eBay announcement page here.

<!-- Performance optimized by W3 Total Cache.
