As reported in a recent Colorado Public News story, a survey conducted by The Colorado Trust found that about 35 percent of Coloradans said they could afford no more than $50 a month for insurance. Ten percent indicated they could afford just $25 or less. But insurance currently averages $182 a month per person in Colorado, and can easily top $700-$1,000 for people older than 55 or with health problems.

The All Payer Claims Database Will Help Coloradans

The non-profit Center for Improving Value in Health Care (CIVHC) is launching an All Payer Claims Database (APCD) containing claims information (cost, diagnosis, payer, provider, and location) that will identify variations in cost and quality across Colorado and eventually provide the comparative information Coloradans need to make informed decisions about their health care. Due to the importance of improving health care in the state, two health organizations, The Colorado Trust and the Colorado Health Foundation, have announced $4.5 million in funding to support APCD implementation.

Unlike some states pushing for the Supreme Court to overturn the 2010 health-care reform law, Colorado is doing a lot to provide medical care to its 829,000 uninsured residents, experts say. Fifty-eight percent of Coloradans lacking health coverage are employed, according to the Colorado Trust, a nonprofit that wants every state resident to have insurance by 2018. They either can’t afford their share of employer-sponsored plans or the full cost of private plans, experts say.
