It’s a safe and fun destination for women travelers, and most importantly…cheap! Airfare to Costa Rica is affordable, the food is inexpensive, and reasonably-priced hotels abound. Kim Mance & Katy Quissell do everything from leaping off of waterfalls, to taking surf lessons and relaxing with yoga at the beach. They also stop off at an indigenous village to see a little more of the countries heritage. Food editor Heather gets a cooking lesson at the RipJack, and Kim gets her nose pierced. It’s a good time had by all…

www.bluezonesecret.com Curanderos, the great medicine men and women of Costa Rica — revered for centuries for herbal cures that cure everything from poisonous snake bites to the common cold — have largely gone the way of coon-skin caps and bell bottoms: theyre gone, out of fashion. Now, most Costa Rican villages have modern clinics with well-trained doctors. The countrys excellent public health system, having successfully suppressed malaria, yellow fever and childhood diseases, explains much of Nicoyas longevity.

The artist from Costa Rica, Guillermo Vargas, has starved a dog to death in his art exhibit in Nicaragua in 2007. This is the most heartbreaking story I have ever heard. Visitors stood around the dog with glasses of champagne in their hands, laughing and talking as if nothing was going on. Although he did this exhibit as a test to show the apathy of humans, it is extremely unethical, wrong and cruel to use a living dog and torture this dog to death for any reason. This petition collects signatures from caring people to stop the gallery and the artist from doing another exhibit with another dog. Please sign this important petition. www.care2.com/causes/a-starving-dog-is-not-a-work-of-art.html
