SPORTS BRIEF: Crimson To Duel with Boston College in First Round of Tournament

It took a long and arduous journey for the Harvard women’s soccer team to make it into the NCAA tournament, but the squad won’t have to go far to play its first round match.
The Crimson will travel to Newton, Mass., Friday evening to take on regional No. 2 seed Boston College—the number seven team in the nation. Scheduled for either 4 p.m. or 7 p.m., the game time has not yet been specified.<div class="feedflare">

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Baskind’s Goals Lead Team to Crown

After a season of handing out assists to her teammates, it was time for sophomore Melanie Baskind to get some goals of her own.
And for the Harvard women’s soccer team, Baskind’s scoring display could not have come at a more crucial moment.
Baskind’s two goals in the Crimson’s final match of the regular season propelled Harvard over Columbia in overtime, 2-1, and earned the defending Ivy League champions an outright Ancient Eight title for the first time this decade.<div class="feedflare">

Women Grab First Place on Charles River

Like many students on campus, the Harvard sailing team is realizing just how quickly the end of the semester is approaching with this year’s new calendar system in place. However, just as yesterday’s clear skies and warm weather provided students with a respite before winter weather and finals season, the Crimson competed in its one and only weekend of fall team racing before next weekend’s fleet-style Atlantic Coast Championships.
The team race format provided Harvard sailors with a preview of what is to come during the spring season and added some confidence heading into next weekend’s fleet championship regattas.<div class="feedflare">

The Crimson knew it would have to leave everything in the pool at the Northern Division Championships. The squad did just that, but it was MIT that got the last laugh. The Engineers prevented Harvard water polo from advancing in the postseason for the second straight year.<div class="feedflare">

Fall Season Wraps Up for Cao and Harvard

The Crimson women’s tennis team hosted the Harvard Invitational this weekend, while sophomore Holly Cao traveled to New Haven to play in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Cao, who qualified for the national tournament after winning the ITA Northeast Regional two weeks ago, faced off against some of the nation’s top competition. In the first round, Cao challenged Marina Cossou of California, but fell, 7-5, 6-4. The sophomore was impressive in her consolation match, but ultimately lost, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, to Nadine Fahoum of Old Dominion.<div class="feedflare">

Crimson Edged by Yale, Shuts Out Brown

The Malkin Athletic Center was an eventful place this weekend.
During the two Harvard women’s volleyball games, a record was broken, one contest required overtime, another ended in a shutout, and a German accordion player performed the American national anthem on Saturday night.
For the crowd of almost 400 that gathered in the Malkin Athletic Center, both the American flag and the team’s veterans, in their last home game ever, provided reason to be proud on Senior Night.<div class="feedflare">

Golden Knights Squeak by Crimson

Being the underdog is a position Harvard women’s hockey isn’t terribly familiar with. But when No. 2 Clarkson (10-1-1, 4-0-0) came to Bright Hockey Center on Friday night, that’s what the No. 10 Crimson was.
Harvard stuck with the Golden Knights, scoring first, but couldn’t hold on as Clarkson rallied to hand the Crimson a 2-1 defeat in its home opener.<div class="feedflare">
