We’ve covered several image editing application before, like BatchPhoto Home, Corel PaintShop Pro, Paintslate, Arcsoft PhotoStudio 6, Archipelis Designer and Pixo SE. Today, we’ll be taking a look at another one-click photo manipulation software by Arcsoft — Perfect365.

Perfect 365 is a simple-to-use application that takes regular photos of yourself and instantly transforms it into a professional makeover. Simply put, Perfect365 is nothing more than a powerful photo manipulation application that takes your regular self-portraits and turn them into something impressive that’s worth sharing or posting up on your Facebook profile.

Perfect365 is commonly mistaken as a free Windows/Mac application when it fact, the free version (which is available from Arcsoft) can only save a 600×600 copy of your image. To save your image in its full, native resolution, the full version has to be unlocked by purchasing a $29.95 license. In the meantime, you can download the free version and give it a try. Or you can also the web version here. Perfect365 is also available as a $1.99 iOS application designed for the iPhone — get it here.

On initial launch, Perfect365 will prompt you to open a photo. Pick any photo that you’d like to work on and Perfect365 will identify and process the image, and finally present it in the main interface.

On the left, you’ll have a selection of one-click transformations that you can apply.

They all have very subtle differences so you’ll have to pay close attention to detail. The effect is implemented almost instantly and is non-destructive, so you’ll be able to preview it while preserving the original image.

In the panel on the right, you’re presented with a myriad of options which you can enable or disable even after you’ve selected an instant transformation in order to fine-tune your makeover. There are a couple of really useful tweaks here. For example, there are options to slim your face, lift your cheeks and enhance your nose. Remember, these are effects that are usually done by professionals in Photoshop but you can now do it with just a click of a button. It’s really that simple.

If your makeovers aren’t turning out the way you were hoping, then it would be a good idea to adjust the key points. These points identify the position of the eyes, nose, lips, chin and sides of the face. Perfect365 does a pretty good job of estimating these points but you have total control over their positions.

When you’re done, it’s time to save your makeover. As previously mentioned, the free version can only save a 600×600 copy of the image. In order to save the image in its full resolution, a license is required. If you happen to win a copy from our giveaway, here is what you’ll need to do.

We’ve had a few giveaways related to system security before but this is an interesting one. How much access control does an operating system really provide you with? What if you’d like to to hide, password-protect or write-protect or encrypt a particular folder on your drive? There aren’t tasks that come innately with Windows.

This week, we’re giving away 20 free copies of idoo File Encryption Pro (worth $99.98 each), a security software that allows you to hide, lock, or encrypt files, folders and drives on your computer. But first, a walkthrough.

Like all software, idoo File Encryption Pro needs to be downloaded and installed. Prior to the installation, idoo File Encryption will prompt you for a master password. This password is used to access locked folders later on so enter something memorable. You also have the option to associate an email address to retrieve your password in case you forget it.

Once idoo File Encryption Pro has been installed, it will prompt you for the master password before allowing you to access the application.

The main window is very easy to navigate. The security options are listed in the left panel — the options are: Hide Data, Deny Read, Deny Write and Encrypt. We’ll be going through all of these features.

Hide Data

This feature will enable you to hide files, folders and drives from view. Once hidden, the files, folders or drives won’t be seen from within Windows Explorer and there’s nothing that you can do from the operating system to bring them back. The list of hidden files, folders and drives can only be accessed via idoo File Encryption Pro.

Deny Read

Deny Read is, in other words, the option to password-protect files, folders and drives.

They can still be accessible from with Windows Explorer but you’ll be prompted to enter the master password.

Once Deny Read is activated, you won’t even be able to view the properties of the files, folders or drives that are being protected; which is a very nice touch.

Deny Write

Deny Write is probably the simplest function in idoo File Encryption Pro. Basically, it prevents any unauthorised changes. Once activated, files cannot be edited and folders cannot be changed. This is a simple yet valuable feature. However, I’ve found that instead of prompting for the master password, all you get is an error message. In order to make any changes to protected files and folders, you’ll need to go through idoo File Encryption Pro, remove the files or folders from the protected list, make the edits or changes, then re-add them to the list.

Encryption

Last, idoo File Encryoption Pro also enables you to encrypt files and folders and this functionality is intertwined into Windows Explorer. To encrypt any file, all you have to do is right-click on it and select “Encrypt a copy” or Encrypt to .exe”. The only difference between the two options is the ability to open the .exe file with any computer. Just by selecting “Encrypt a copy” you’ll specifically need idoo File Encryption Pro for the decryption process.

Personally, I haven’t tested this feature to see how it actually works.

Finally, we’ll go through some of the niceties found under the Settings panel. Here’s my favourite: if anyone tries to access a locked folder and incorrectly enters the password more than 5 times, you’ll receive an email about it. You can also set the program to disable y our account for 10 minutes after that.

idoo File Encryption Pro can also hide itself by entering an Invisible (Stealth) mode so no one will know that it’s running in the background.

All in all, idoo File Encyrption Pro is easy to use and comes with several highly desirable security features. There’s nothing much to complain about except the occasional grammar errors in the application. I haven’t actually tested any available support features but their email response time was acceptable.

Almost everyone likes word search puzzles, right? Here’s a bit of trivia: word searches are also known as word find, word seek, word sleuth or mystery word puzzles. Basically, they’re letters arranged in a grid and your task is to find all of the hidden words. Interestingly, the first word search puzzle appears in a digest sometime in 1968!

Today, you can easily make your own word search puzzles instead of waiting for a new one to appear in your local newspaper or favourite digest. The Internet affords a simple way of creating your very own word search puzzles with your own words and clues. There are, I’m sure, many sites to choose from when it comes to making your own word puzzles but this article will focus on one, mainly because it offers a nice list of different word-related puzzles you can create.

Build your own word search with DiscoveryEducation’s puzzle maker

DiscoveryEducation.com has a free puzzlemaker page with 10 different puzzles you can create, most of them having to do with words making them nice to include on fliers and other publications. The site makes the creation of these puzzles very simple. Let’s go ahead and make a few to demonstrate how simple it is to make your own word search puzzles.

As previously mentioned, a word search is a puzzle where you are given a square made up of what looks like random letters. Here’s an example of what one would look like (in case you haven’t seen one before):

The object is to find each word on the list hidden in the box of letters. Circle each word to keep track.

Design your own word search puzzle

Making your own word search puzzle consists of three parts: the title, the size of puzzle, and the list of hidden words. The word search creator is as simple as filling out a form containing each of those parts, including a few more settings to make the puzzle perfect for you.

The process of making your own word search puzzle is broken down into six easy steps:

1. Enter a title of the word search
2. Enter the size you want your word search puzzle to be (measured by number of letters)
3. Puzzle options: Do you want to use each letter only once, share letters occasionally, or share them as much as possible?
4. Output type: You can choose from HTML (if you plan to print it directly from your browser), text (for better formatting options once pasted into a project), and lowercase text.
5. Enter the words making sure you separate them with spaces, commas, or put a new word on each line.
6. Proofread the puzzle once generated. The app has filters in place to try to weed out offensive words that may be generated by accident. If you want to regenerate the word search puzzle, just click the back button and have it regenerated.

The free puzzle maker tool gives you the ability to create 10 different types of puzzles including: word search, criss-cross, double puzzles, fallen phrases, math squares, mazes, letter tiles, cryptograms, number blocks, and hidden message. Give them each a try. The instructions for each are just as easy to follow as the word search instructions.

Now that you know how to make your own word search puzzles, what kind of creative uses can you come up with for them?

BitTorrent is one of the greatest and best ways to download and share files in the world of today; however, there are a lot of risks involved with the method due to the increasing level of piracy on the service and internet service providers’ constant and ever increasing scrutiny over their subscriber’s internet usage and habits. There are a lot of ways to hide BitTorrent from your ISP — methods vary from using proxies, simple encryption, seed boxes, VPNs to switching to the more obscure and harder to track Usenet.

The truth is, these methods or switching services are not nearly enough to keep your hide BitTorrent activity completely from the prying eyes of your ISP and copyright holders. Even if you’re not doing anything illegal, and we hope you’re not, or only sharing content you have bought, you might still be at risk because some ISPs don’t even allow that, and this is why you need to mask your BitTorrent activity, and the best way to handle that is using an external proxy of encryption service to filter and hide your connection.

Hide BitTorrent downloads from your ISP

This is where BTGuard comes in – a proxy server and connection encryption service that is especially designed with the BitTorrent protocol in mind. There are lots of other such services out there and some of them are even free or offer a free trial, but they do not offer the level of anonymity, security or speed that BTGuard does so we will be using BTGuard as a reference point for the purposes of this article. BTGuard also offers an encryption service if you prefer a torrent client that does not have one already built in.

Of course BTGuard isn’t free, it costs $7 a month but can go down to a $5 per month if you subscribe for a whole year. View their pricing plan here.

Hide BitTorrent Activity: Step #1. Configuring your anonymity

BTGuard and other proxy server and connection encryption services mask your BitTorrent activity by filtering your internet traffic or your BitTorrent traffic through another server, so that your IP address cannot be traced and anti-piracy groups can’t contact your ISP and the ISP has no reason to take drastic actions. One more awesome thing about BTGuard in this regard is that the service does not keep any records, so there are no chances of your ISP or anti-piracy groups getting your download or BitTorrent information from them.

In order to mask your BitTorrent downloads, you are going to need proxy support in order to use proxy services, or BTGuard in this case. uTorrent (for Windows) and Vuze (for Windows, Mac, and Linux) have proxy support, but Transmission (for Mac and Linux) does not have proxy support.

Hide BitTorrent Activity: Step #2. Setting up BTGuard

It’s super easy to install BTGuard due to its easy setup process, but the other services we mentioned mostly require manual configuration and the settings are usually the same for all SOCKS 5 proxy services, so we’re going to configure BTGuard manually in order to pinpoint all the areas you need to hit to complete your configuration to mask your BitTorrent activity.

First off, you will need to sign up for an account at BTGuard. Once finished, you will get an email notifying you that your service is good to go. Next, open up your torrent client of your choice and find the proxy settings within its preferences. We will be using uTorrent as an example, so go to Preferences > Connection and enter the information for BTGuard or the other proxy service you’re using.

• Proxy Type: SOCKS v5
• Proxy Host: proxy.btguard.com or other service
• Proxy Port: 1025
• Username: username for proxy service
• Password: password for proxy service

Make sure to enable any settings for using the proxy for hostname or tracker lookups and peer-to-peer connections – or all the settings available in uTorrent. Disable connections or features that might compromise the proxy, so check all the boxes in the Proxy Privacy section. You should also randomize your listening port in order to make your activity harder to track. Click Apply and exit the preferences. Restart the torrent client if needed and your proxy is now ready.

Hide BitTorrent Activity: Step #3. Testing your connection

To check if the proxy has properly masked your BitTorrent connection, go to CheckMyTorrentIP.com. Click the Generate Torrent button, and open the torrent file in uTorrent or your torrent client of choice. Check the passkey from the tracker page in your client and enter it in the web page to see your real IP. Now enable your proxy service and go back to the browser to the IP checking page and click the Refresh button under the Check IP tab and you should now have a different IP address, meaning that the proxy service is working correctly. You can also use a more simple and manual method of checking your IP address by going to this site.

Hide BitTorrent Activity: Step #4. Setting up your desktop torrent client

The next and final step in masking your BitTorrent activity is setting up your desktop torrent client. We would generally recommend that you use uTorrent because it’s just so awesome. In uTorrent, go to Preferences > BitTorrent and look for Protocol Encryption. Change the outgoing connection to Forced encryption, and uncheck the Allow incoming legacy connections. This will allow you added encryption protection. But some torrent clients do no have built in encryption support.

If your torrent client does not have encryption support, or if you want better encryption, go to the Encryption page at the BTGuard web page, download the software, and install it to C:\BTGUARD. It will cost you extra, but the added protection is worth it. Start the program you just installed and open the torrent client. You will just need to change the proxy server from the one we set earlier to 127.0.0.1 and restart the torrent client.

All Done!

Your BitTorrent activity are now hidden from your ISP and anti-piracy groups. Keep in mind that we’ve described how to mask your BitTorrent activity purely for educational and security reasons, please do not engage in downloading content illegally or support piracy even though you’re now completely anonymous.

Emulation of the SNES is now possible on portable hardware such as iOS and Android devices, and on the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS via homebrew software. Even Nintendo has accepted the potential of emulation, as exhibited by its implementation of the Virtual Console service in the Nintendo Wii, but emulating the SNES on the PC remains the most popular and the best method of playing SNES games as it is has been time tested and is the most accurate way of emulating the console.

Using a PC emulator for SNES means that you have more raw power available to mimic the capabilities of the console, and despite what some would have you believe, perfectly accurate emulation of the SNES can take a lot of power – up to 3Ghz worth! And that is certainly not possible on any portable device and especially not the Wii.

Today, we’re going to take a look at two of the best PC emulators for SNES available today, so get load up your old ROMs and start the emulation!

PC Emulators for SNES #1. ZSNES

First up and best on the emulation stage is ZSNES, a free PC SNES emulator written mostly in x86 assembly. The SNES emulator has official ports for Linux, MS-DOS, Mac OS X, Windows and an unofficial port for the Xbox. Starting with development in mid-1997, ZSNES made its name on the SNES emulation scene due to its ability to emulate most SNES enhancement chips at some level, a feature quite rare for the time.

Although, it is sometimes criticized due to its low level of accuracy with some games, ZSNES is still being developed today, although not by the original developers, and is constantly getting rid of any flaws fans might discover.

This PC SNES emulator features a simple interface that allows users to load the games through ROMs. One of the best features of the software is that it allows you to use joypads to play the games and also allows the use of turbo buttons for rapid fire and any other use for those games can dream up. ZSNES also has the usual filters and graphical options that allow you to make the games look and feel more original or as if they were being played on an old CRT TV, a much appreciated feature for those who want to feel nostalgic while playing an old game.

The cheater in you also gets the ability to input cheats as if you were using an Action Replay or Game Genie device, but one of the best features ZSNES offers with regards to “game breaking” is the ability to forward or rewind the game a few frames, which can be a real life saver when playing some of the harder titles. It can also emulate some of the accessories that came out for the SNES, like the light gun. The ability to save and load states is also present as a standard. Users also have options to customize the interface and change the hotkeys to make them feel more at home while using the emulator.

ZSNES is one of the best SNES emulators on the PC today due to its excellent compatibility, nice accuracy with all the popular titles and ease of use.

PC Emulators for SNES #2. SNES9X

Although SNES9X is a little more accurate than ZSNES, it plays second fiddle to the latter due to lower levels of customizability, but it is by no means a bad PC SNES emulator and firmly remains rooted at the second spot due to its great compatibility and moderate level of possible customization. This SNES emulator for PC started development almost at the same time as ZSNES and gained notoriety for being the first SNES emulator to offer sound output. It is still being actively developed by its original developers.

SNES9X uses a more Windows-like interface compared to the ZSNES’ more custom-made geeky looking one, and perhaps this is why it is more popular with users, as it makes them feel more at home using using the software. This SNES emulator for PC features all the standard stuff like the ability to save and load states, custom filters and the ability to use cheats. But you lose the ability to forward of rewind games and use turbo buttons like in ZSNES – a trade off that had to be made in order to increase the accuracy of the emulation.

If you don’t like ZSNES for some reason or just want to try an alternative, SNES9X is the way to go.

The Best Alternative SNES Emulator

If you desire more accuracy, want to play SNES games in all their original glory, use effects that make them look and feel as original as possible and have that 3Ghz needed we talked about earlier, you should take a look at bsnes – an emulator that has been making waves on the scene due to its great accuracy and ability to do SPC7110 emulation, cycle-accurate SPC700 emulation, cycle-accurate SuperFX emulation, and Super Game Boy emulation.

Conclusion

SNES emulators do have an expiry date, something that especially holds true for ZSNES as it is written in pure x86 assembly and cannot be ported to other types of machines due to this. It might be the best PC SNES emulator available today, but it is time to move on to bigger and better things – and that is bsnes, until something better comes along, because Windows might soon get rid of backwards compatibility for 32-bit applications like it has done with 16-bit ones, which is going to doom pieces of software like ZSNES, great though they may be, to extinction, along with the hacks and fan translations that have been locked to run on it. So, it is better to move now and port all those things to other emulators than suffering in the future.

Despite all the negative press and copyright infringement notices that BitTorrent seems to keep getting, it’s impossible to deny its utility as a file sharing service.

One of the most popular torrent clients available today is uTorrent. The latest version of uTorrent adds the unique ability to monitor and manage your downloads from your Android phone, wherever you might be in the world. Of course, you need to have your computer and the uTorrent client running in order to do the deed, but the convenience afforded is really amazing.

Our tutorial today deals with exactly that — remotely controlling your BitTorrent downloads with the uTorrent Android app. It requires some setting up on both your computer and Android phone before it can work properly.

Remote Control uTorrent: Setting Up The Computer

You obviously need to install the uTorrent client itself from here. Then you need to click the uTorrent Remote icon in the application’s toolbar and make sure you enable uTorrent Remote for your system. In order to do that, check the box marked enable uTorrent Remote Access and assign yourself a username and password. Remember these credentials because you’ll need them to access your torrents on your mobile device.

Remote Control uTorrent: Setting Up The uTorrent Android app

On your Android phone or tablet, you need to make sure to have the uTorrent Remote Android application installed from the Android Market. Once you’re done with that, fire up the app. You’ll be greeted with a screen that requires you to sign in with your credentials for uTorrent Remote. It’ll even prompt you to register in case you don’t yet have your credentials.

Once you are done with the sign up or sign in on the uTorrent Android app, as the case may be, you’ll be taken a screen which serves as the main menu for the app. From here, you have the options of remotely controlling and monitoring your torrents on your desktop computer at home. Aside from that, you can even initiate new torrent downloads right from your Android device (and I suppose that this will be an extremely useful tool) and have it transfer to and play on your Android device when it’s done.

The settings section of the app is pretty spartan, and provides you with options for staying logged in, changing the update interval, and whether or not you want to download over 2G/3G (transfer files to your Android device). If you are on a limited data plan, you might want to disable this, as I’ve done.

All in all, uTorrent Remote is one of the more useful Android apps that I’ve used in recent times. Still, it provides a much sought after feature, that is to remote control uTorrent from an Android app. The web interface made remotely controlling uTorrent easy but with uTorrent Remote, it has become so much simpler. See whether you find the uTorrent Android app just as useful during your downloading sprees.

How often do you install a program on your Windows computer, and then remove it a few days, weeks, months or years later after you no longer have any use for it? If you do this quite regularly, you may that find your computer becomes quite slow, unresponsive, or simply just sluggish. The reason for that is because Windows has what is called a registry, which holds information about particular applications and settings to ensure that your computer works properly.

However, when you install programs and remove them, some of these registry keys may not be removed. So when you perform an action on your computer, it’s trying to execute the key, but is delayed, as it cannot find what it’s referring to.

To speed up your computer, you could always format it and start from scratch, but this is quite a lot of work, as you have to backup your files, reinstall the operating system and then reinstall all your programs. It can take many days to do this, especially if you have a lot of files and programs to put back.

Alternatively, you can take the simpler approach and just use a register cleaner, or a registry fixer like the one we are giving away this week: Auslogics Registry Fixer. We have 10 copies of the brand new software from Auslogics, worth $300 in total. So let’s dive in to see what this program can do.

Installation

I would say most programs are pretty easy to install, but I found Auslogics Registry Fixer one of the easiest I’ve ever come across. With only a few screens, it was incredibly easy and quick to install.

First Launch

When you first launch the registry fixer, you will see the following screen, which provides a simple walkthrough of what the software is and why you need it. I recommend having a read through it, as it’s only four screens.

The Dashboard

After reading (or skipping) the tutorial, you are presented with the software’s Dashboard. It doesn’t take a genius to work out how to use it – it’s very simple.

The free and paid versions of Auslogics Registry Fixer are exactly the same, although, with the free version, you can only fix the first 13 items, and I had 79 errors on an operating system that only has about 5 programs installed. The first thing you should do is click on the Register button on the bottom right and enter your product key. Once confirmed, you need to restart Auslogics Registry Fixer to enable the changes.

Scanning The Registry

To start your scan, click the Start Scan button, or go to the Scan tab. One thing I didn’t quite like is that when you click on the Scan tab, it automatically starts scanning, but other people might like that feature.

The scan happened amazingly quickly. I was expecting it to take at least 10 minutes, but it was done in around 1 minute, which is very nice.

Checking Your Results

Once the registry scan is completed, you can fix your errors, or view the log of what will be fixed. As you can see, there are quite a lot of errors to be fixed – much more than I first anticipated.

Once all the problems have been repaired, you can check your log again to ensure they have in fact, been fixed.

There’s Defragmentation As Well!

In the Optimize tab, you can also schedule your computer to perform a defragmentation run on next boot. You could always access this through the Start menu, but it’s a nice touch to add.

You Can Restore Repairs

Cleaning the Windows Registry is a tricky thing. Deleting one incorrect registry key could leave your entire operating system inaccessible, or programs to malfunction. If you find the software has done this (didn’t happen to me when I was testing it), you can always restore what it has fixed, so you can rest assure your computer is safe.
