I love the embroidery; David and I both think it has a Mexican look to it, but the style of the dress almost seems Asian. It's unique and I'm glad to have stumbled upon it (and for only $20, too!). REVOLT: Week 3

Hello again! I'm checking in with my after my third week of participating in the Revolt Fitness program. This week was tough for me because my schedule was much busier than usual. End-of-school-year dance recitals happened this week and weekend and I was in the theater all week, so I did not have as much time to myself as I usually do. I stuck to the meal plan throughout the week as much as possible, but unfortunately had to skip two days of the workout. I'm anxious to get back in the game next week!

I took some progress pictures recently but the results are still too subtle to notice any major changes. I've lost 1.5 inches in my waist but that doesn't show up easily on camera. I can tell that my clothes are looser. Last week I altered a vintage dress that I bought in December (debuting later this week) - it was really snug then and I figured I would have to let the seams out a good bit. It wasn't nearly as tight when I tried it on last week and I didn't have to let out the seams as much as I thought I would. I'm definitely liking these results!

This week's dinner included chicken with my oversized serving of peppers and onions (I figure there are worse things to indulge in).

And this week's stats:

Looking at my larger list of stats in my private spreadsheet, I noticed that while I've lost over 3 pounds of fat mass, I've also lost 1 pound of lean muscle mass since I started. I'm still navigating how all this works inside my body, but I think that means I need to eat more calories. I've only been eating half-size servings of the breakfast so perhaps I need to eat the total recommended amount. 'Til next time!

REVOLT: Week 2

Hello today! I am finishing up Week 2 of the Revolt Fitness program (last post here) and feeling good! Well technically, I did the kickstart last week and I'm doing Week 1 now, but I've been participating for two weeks. The kickstart fitness exercises were very unrealistic for me - too many reps and sets. The exercises we did this week were customizable based on level and much more attainable. Of three levels, I'm doing somewhere around a level 1.5. We have three days of cardio, one day of lower body focus, and one day of upper body focus.

I also got a new meal plan for this week. Other than the breakfasts, I have been loving the food. It helps that I already eat a lot of vegetables and love salads because there are tons in this plan. No sugars, potatoes, corn, wheat, etc. is allowed. I've never been a big breakfast eater and I'm usually not hungry upon waking, so forcing myself to eat breakfast has been a challenge. Here's a shot of this week's dinner - steak, peppers, onions, guacamole (that David made and it was absolutely delicious), and salad.

Note: that serving of peppers and onions is way more than I was supposed to eat...but I was hungry and it tasted so good!

So, for the updated stats - I've lost approximately 2% total body fat and David has lost approximately 3.5% total body fat since Week 1:

Happy Friday friends! Here is my last look for Week of Vintage. My mom spotted this dress and when I saw it, I immediately thought of Madmen's Peggy from the early seasons. I remember her wearing lots of plaid. I love the accents of white throughout the material and it had major bonus points because I did not have to alter it (though looking at the pictures, I may hem it one to two inches [significant changes for petites!]). I also love that the belt is in the same fabric, but the grain of the plaid is horizontal instead of vertical.

Hello! I just love this little floral jacket I found amongst Ms. Vick's garments. It's a perfect print for Spring and works well with contemporary fashions. I thought a simple white t-shirt and jeans would highlight the jacket for an easy look. I noticed all the small holes running long the front when I got home and decided I would try my hand at darning, hence yesterday's DIY. Week of Vintage: Re-Vamping Vintage, Part VI (How To Darn A Hole)

So here's an old technique - darning holes. I've actually never darned a hole before. This fabric pictured above belongs to a cute little jacket and once I got it home, I realized there were a few smalls holes running along the front. I thought I'd try my hand at darning and did a bit of internet research to figure out what I needed to do. It seemed easy enough, but it definitely took me several holes to get the hang of it.

Usually people darn holes in socks and use some fancy devices, but I'm not getting that complicated. I'm focusing mainly on the stitch pattern for non-stretch, non-curved fabrics. This is fairly simple and easy with a bit of practice.

Step 1
You will make rows of vertical running stitches. The fabric I was working with is somewhat oddly textured (and of course my holes aren't perfectly round) so I think the drawings make it much clearer. You want to make the rows close together and extend beyond the hole a little bit. I wasn't sure if I needed to double my thread - I tried single and double and with the small holes I was mending, the single thread seemed to work better. Also, I am working on the wrong side of the fabric.

Step 2

Now, you will repeat these stitched horizontally, weaving under and over the vertical rows. Tie a knot at the end and snip. My example is a little rough, but it looks fine from the outside.

Week Of Vintage: Welcome to 1963

Greetings and welcome to 1963! I got to be an extra on a '60s era movie recently (though I won't type the name here until after the movie is released) and this was my outfit. How appropriate for vintage week. This dress is too big and I would have preferred it been properly pressed, but was fun nonetheless. The glasses are interesting, too - I wish I had some close-up shots! My hair was done by the hair artists and I love it. There were also lots of cool vintage cars on set (here I am with an Edsel) and I love the two girls in the background (in the dresses and white socks with Ked's, so '60s, so perfect!).

My scene was even on the local news - here is a clip with the exact car I'm posing next to. And funny enough, if this shot were a few more inches to the right, you would see me talking to the guy in the glasses (far right edge). Thanks for stopping by today - lots more vintage coming this week!

Hi friends - I'm so excited to present my second installment of Week Of Vintage (catch the first segment here)! I had such a positive response last year that I wanted to recreate this series. If you've read my blog for any length of time you know that I love vintage (probably from growing up watching Nick At Night's 1950s/60s/70s television shows [my favorite was Get Smart] and listening to FOX 97, a now-defunct Atlanta radio station that played pop hits from the same era).

Recently I've found a great resource for vintage clothing, a small antique shop in a small town (Midway Treasures in Wedowee, AL, to be exact). Lucky for me, the owner acquired a lady's vintage wardrobe that happened to be similar in size to me. I've made a few minor alterations to her clothing (mostly letting out the hips and/or waist an inch or two). What's even more interesting is that I have her name and picture! She was Ms. Odessa Vick and was a payroll supervisor in Birmingham, Alabama. She (or perhaps a daughter) had some really cute clothing. This Bobbie Brooks two-piece dress caught my eye because of the pretty details. Bobbie Brooks generally made clothing for juniors and young women, but I think it is pretty and want to wear it even though I'm nearing 32! The alterations I did were to let out the waist about an inch or so and hem it two inches.

Something Different with REVOLT

Hi friends! I'm going to talk about something different today. I was approached by the Revolt Fitness team to try out the program and blog about it. At first I was hesitant - I don't like working out. It's boring. I'm a dancer (primarily trained in ballet) and find no artistic expression or quality in working out - no aesthetic appeal to the movements. And I'm not used to moving my body that way. I like slow pliés at the barre and fast petit allegro in the center. Dance challenges both my mind and body as I work towards improving my technique and creating interesting movement.

But these days, I'm not dancing 3-6 hours per day like I was in college (now, only for a few hours on Sundays and I teach dance during the week) and slowly my body is becoming something I don't like as much as I used to. David and I have been talking about working out for a year or two, but I since I despise going to the gym, I have avoided starting any workout program. The Revolt program, founded by Nichole Huntsman, works by combining three elements: the 20-40 minute workout (which you can do in the privacy of your own home delivered daily through videos), the meal plan (which you can customize and there's also a free day on Saturday [eat what you want!]), and a community (you can start with others and track your progress together). And it's all available for roughly 35 cents per day. So why did I start? Well because, quite frankly, as a blogger, I get to try it for free. I've had the inkling in my mind for a while that I needed to do something, and this opportunity and motivation has come along at the right time.

David and I started the "kickstart" last week and we were certainly sore at first! But I think it will be worth it. I will be tracking our progress weekly. We both noticed changes in only one week.

You can see that I dropped 1% and David dropped 2% in total body fat. My goal is to get to somewhere between 18-20% body fat and David's goal is to get to 135-140 pounds. I plan to blog about this for about 12 weeks and will probably dedicate Fridays as Fitness Fridays. If you'd like to check out the program, head to Revolt Fitness.

Happy Monday! I loved seeing Jenny of Crazy Style Love's DIY bows last week so I fashioned myself a pair. With scrap black ribbon, I tied the bows, stitched the middles to keep them from coming untied, frayed-checked the ends, and like Jenny, double-stick taped them to my shoes (even these nice patent Loub's with no damage!). It certainly adds flair to an otherwise simple yet classic pair of heels. Also, here is the second DvF dress I recently stumbled across in the consignment shop I frequent. It was marked higher than I like but was on sale, and when I use my consignment credit to pay, I get an additional percentage off. With just barely enough in my account, I only had to fork over $7! Another excellent deal, I'd say!

Happy Monday, friends! For about two years, I've been searching the second-hand market for classic DvF wrap dresses. They're quite abundant and easily available for $80 - 150; the challenge is that I've been looking for dresses under $50. Just recently I found not one, but two, for $50 or less! This one I found online through a girl who was selling a large quantity of her wardrobe because of an upcoming move and her loss is definitely my gain. This style is called Evrin and I'm demonstrating how versatile these dresses are. The top few pics were for dinner and the bottom were for a casual daytime event. Greetings! You probably wouldn't see it without me making mention, but there is a snowflake in the first picture in the front of my hair! We got a few flurries this weekend - quite an exciting time for a Southerner. Also, I'm wearing a lot of vintage in this outfit. I found this velvet-collared-and-cuffed retro jacket a few years ago and the gloves I purchased recently are a great match. I love the sharply tailored waistline - very feminine and reminiscent of a bygone era. Three-quarter sleeve jackets call for longer gloves and I'm glad to have these on hand - aren't they divine?
