<summary> GLCCB Expresses Deepest Sympathy and Support to the Family of Murder Victim Kelly Young

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center of Baltimore and Maryland (GLCCB) is deeply saddened by the murder of Kelly Young. We express our deepest sympathies to Ms. Young's family and friends. For far to long our LGBT community has been targeted for being who they are and for who they love. Kelly's murder is unfortunately the latest crime to victimize our community.

We implore the Baltimore City Police Department and local government to move swiftly and proactively in identifying Ms. Young's assailant(s) and bringing them to justice. These senseless acts of violence perpetrated by hateful and intolerant individuals must not be taken lightly. It is imperative that the LGBT community must stand up in solidarity to address the violence committed against our community.

"This is a tragedy for our community," said Matt Thorn, Interim Executive Director,"We are committed in the struggle for justice and equality, especially for the most vulnerable among us. This is a moment to foster a deeper understanding and respect for the transgender community amongst the broader public. The GLCCB will continue to work to educate the public about transgender issues and foster greater tolerance and respect for transgender individuals."

In addition Thorn states: "Though we do not know the full circumstances surrounding this tragedy this crime illustrates the need for laws like the Violence Against Women's Act which was passed with LGBT provisions and for stronger anti-discrimination policies like the Fairness for All Marylanders Act."

About the GLCCB:

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center of Baltimore and Maryland (also known as GLCCB or The Center) seeks to achieve equality, understanding, and respect for the diversity of the greater Baltimore LGBT community while also providing quality support services, facilities, and professional resources for the development and well-being of individuals and groups.

Since 1977 the GLCCB has touched the lives of generations through support groups, social events, benefits, and health forums. The GLCCB furthers its impact by collaborating with community organizations that address a variety of health, recovery, mental health, legal, political, and social issues. Among other programs and services, the GLCCB publishes the monthly Gay Life magazine and the annual Baltimore LGBT Visitors Guide, produces the annual Baltimore Pride celebration and the BProud Awards.

<summary>Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV) recently submitted testimony for the Oversight Hearing on the Metropolitan Police Department. The hearing was held by the DC City Council Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, chaired by City Councilmember Tommy Wells. The testimony reads, in part:

"We applaud the MPD for their efforts to decrease the murder rate in our city to a fifty-year low. However, hate crimes against the LGBT community continue to rise at an alarming rate. Although GLOV offers statistics to show the rise of hate crimes in the District, it is important to note that every statistic represents an individual. Every person is a brother, a sister, a son, a daughter, a loved one. These people were victims of violent crimes because of the hatred against their real or perceived LGBT identity.

From 2011 to 2012, the MPD reported a ten percent surge in bias-related crimes in the "sexual orientation" category.1 Overall, hate crime numbers in both the "sexual orientation" and "gender identity/expression" categories totaled 53 in 2011 and increased to 55 in 2012.2 This growth is indicative of a five-year trend in which hate crimes have been increasing year after year since 2007."

<summary>Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence (GLOV) is pleased to announce the results of its 2013 elections. Serving as co-chairpersons will be Hassan Naveed and Matthew Corso, and Paul Tupper was elected to the newly-created position of Secretary.

Naveed and Corso have long associations with GLOV.

In his last position as vice chairperson, Hassan Naveed played a key role in co-leading and representing the organization, resulting in deeper relationships with other community organizations. He also focused on GLOV's advocacy work, serving on the Critical Incident Team and building stronger relations with the Metropolitan Police Department.

Matthew Corso, a long-serving member of GLOV and a victim of a hate crime in 2008, has primarily focused his attention on victim assistance and served as project lead in crafting the GLOV Safety Tips packet. He also recently joined the DC Center's Board of Directors and serves as chair of it's Center Global initiative.

Paul Tupper's association with GLOV began last year and he volunteered at a number of events and on various projects, including assisting Corso on developing a packet of victim resources and aiding Naveed with training volunteers for sessions with members of the Metropolitan Police Department.

A.J. Singletary, immediate past-chairperson, will remain an active member of GLOV.
