A Letter to Marvel Television Fans from Jeph Loeb

It had never been done before.

Four separate television series, each with different super-talented showrunners, writers, directors, cast and crew, coming out months apart and then...

...they would meet in a single event series all set in the heart of New York City.

We called them The Defenders.

And together we were thrilled by stories of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and even the Punisher joined in!

They said it couldn't be done.

But Marvel assembled amazing teams to write, produce, direct, edit, and score 13 seasons and 161 one-hour episodes.

Take a moment and go online and look at the dazzling list of actors, writers, directors, and musicians who graced us with the very best of their craft.

We loved each and every minute of it.

And we did it all for you -- the fans -- who cheered for us around the world and made all the hard work worth it.

So, Thank You!

Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters... but you know Marvel better than that.

The SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition 2018 - Day 9 - Game of Thrones vs. The Defenders & Pretty Little Liars vs. The Leftovers

Game of Thrones is arguably the biggest and most well-known series on the planet. Certainly, there is no dearth of fans of it. It's made the semi-finals of this competition just once, however, and has spent the past two years being eliminated in the third round. We're currently in the first year without the show airing an episode since it first began in 2011; it will be interesting to see how that affects matters today. It is still seeded, after all. But if Thrones is the biggest series, it comes up against something from the biggest movie franchise in the world today. The Defenders, which is considered a finished series after its eight-episode run a year ago, is the sole contender from Netflix's MCU content — a fact that seemed to surpise a few people. It might be an even bigger surprise were it to progress today.

Pretty Little Liars is featuring for its fourth year, but has yet to make it out of round one. Last year, two months after concluding the series, it came a meagre 58th. Might today finally be the day it makes it to the second round? There will be a second round debutant regardless of what wins this poll, however, because The Leftovers has also never made it before. Given the running joke suggestion that all of about 17 people watched the HBO show when it was on, it's the Freeform series that emerges as favourite here.

2018 Emmy Awards - SpoilerTV Staff Nominations

This Thursday, July 12 at 11:30am ET/8:30 am PT, the nominations for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced ahead of the ceremony on Monday, September 17, broadcast on NBC and co-hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che. Ahead of Thursday's announcement, which you'll be able to follow here on SpoilerTV, I put it to our team to give their nominations for who they'd like to see shortlisted.

It's important to note that these are not predictions; many of these will likely not make the official list. These are the nominations that the team would make if they were a voting member of the Academy. As such, they had to adhere exactly to the Emmy ballots, which means that only those who submitted were up for debate, and performers and programs had to be listed in the category that they were on in the ballots.

A number of categories had ties that exceeded the usual number of nominees in that particular category. To ensure our list is as workable as possible, I followed rules 5a-5d under the Primetime Rules and Procedures' Nominations Procedures. As a result, some categories exceed the number you would expect, and some are slightly lower.

A new type of fan has emerged on Netflix, and they're racing to be the first to finish shows like Stranger Things, House of Cards, Fuller House and more. Turns out streaming fast is a new status symbol. Netflix has changed the way the world engages with stories - viewers watch when, where and how they want, at whatever pace - and in doing so, has given rise to a new kind of fan: the Binge Racer. Accomplishing in a day what takes others weeks to achieve, Binge Racers strive to be the first to finish by speeding through an entire season within 24 hours of its release*.

Amazon, Netflix and Hulu's Most Popular Shows in September Revealed

Of the premium content offered by the Big Three streamers, the most popular shows in September from each were The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu), The Man in the High Castle (Amazon) and Narcos (Netflix), according to Parrot Analytics.

Subscription video-on-demand, popularized by Netflix, was an $8.21 billion industry last year and will grow to $14.03 billion by 2021, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Such growth, though, means cable and satellite TV may struggle with customers cutting the cord while younger consumers choose never to subscribe in the first place. There were 16.7 million cord-cutters by 2016, according to eMarketer, and there will be 40.1 million by 2021. There were 32.5 million cord-nevers (Americans who have never subscribed to pay television) in 2016, and that will rise to 41 million by 2021.

Even free, over-the-air broadcast television won’t be immune to the competition from streaming. EMarketer says that the average adult American watched four hours and 10 minutes of TV — be it free, cable or satellite — per day in 2017, but that number will fall to three hours and 47 minutes in 2019. Meanwhile, time spent with digital media was one hour and 10 minutes in 2016, and that will grow to one hour and 26 minutes in 2019.

Thanks to the amazing team here at SpoilerTV the July round of POTM went off without a hitch despite my very unexpected absence (for those that don't know, my appendix decided it no longer wished to be inside my body any longer and left behind some extra complications just because it could) and I want to thank every single person who jumped in and helped out. From the team that wrote the amazing winner articles to Andy who graciously announced the winners for me and put up the August nominations post, I owe all of you for keeping POTM running on schedule, so thank you!

SpoilerTV's Weekly Round Table: 12th Edition

Hey, everyone! Welcome to the 12th Edition of Weekly Round Table brought to you this week by yours truly, Kollin (KL). This week we take a look back at the Summer 2017 Season of TV, as well as talk about Game of Thrones, and discuss a rumour concerning Riverdale and Supergirl. Joining me this edition will be Andy (DU), Samantha (SB), Laura M. (LS), Lisa (LM), Jaime (JC), Marine (MP), Donna Chidley (DC), and Donna Cromeans (DR).

1.)The Summer Season of TV is behind us. From new shows like Blood Drive, The Defenders, Midnight, Texas, and The Sinner to the revival of Twin Peaks and the returning seasons of a plethora of shows, Game of Thrones [ahem], among others. Not to mention headlines like the HBO hacks.
Who or What were some of the biggest losers and biggest winners and/or shows that surprised you? Disappointed you?

DU: Biggest surprise for me was USA's The Sinner. Excellent writing, acting and a great central mystery to hold our attention. Not your typical USA show.

An honorable mention goes so far to Room 104. A fun little show that does not take itself too seriously.

Biggest disappointment for me goes to The Mist. Another King adaptation that misses the mark on so many levels. It's like watching a car crash.

KL: On a quality standpoint, I would mark down Syfy as a winner this summer. Maybe I'm crazy? But the summer started off with 12 Monkeys on May 19 (if you consider it summer) for its third and second last season. Season 3 was met with critical acclaim giving viewers a dose of riveting, emotional, and intelligently written science fiction. "Syfriday" then kicked into high gear with the trifecta of Killjoys, Dark Matter, and Wynonna Earp. The latter got an early season 3 renewal due to a rabid fan base, while delivering a flawed, but solid season. Dark Matter and Killjoys had arguably their best seasons yet, though ratings did drop. On top of it all, Syfy premiered Blood Drive this past summer, which has been a surprisingly fun, no-nonsense, blood splattered ode to grind house filmmaking. Technically, Syfy may not be "winners" per se, especially when you look at the ratings, but the not-too-long ago ridiculed channel has been winning over its fair share of fans (myself included) and, due to solid programming, this summer was a step in the right direction towards continued respectability. Now, they just have to renew Killjoys and Dark Matter!

A clear big winner would have to be both Game of Thrones and HBO. The cable channel faced multiple hacks, and the show itself had episodes leaked, yet it still managed to draw in strong, stable ratings while delivering an amazing season 7. All in all, a great summer for HBO amidst the maelstrom of hacks. I also have to mention Ozark as both a surprise and a winner, a throughly entertaining crime drama that deservedly received a Season 2 renewal. In particular, Jason Bateman was a big winner showing a different side in him as an actor and receiving rave reviews for his performance (and to a lesser degree writing).

Disappointment? The Defenders. The team up of Netflix' Marvel superheroes was a deeply flawed show that was just okay and it definitely did not live up to expectations.

LS:Biggest winner? RICK AND MORTY! Season 3 is an absolute blast so far and I absolutely cannot wait to see how the season wraps up. The wait for season 4 is going to be immensely painful, but that will mean that season 3 left off with a bang, which I have no doubts that it will. It’s also the 2nd highest rated summer cable show (after GOT, in which case, *yawns*) which certainly qualifies it as a hit. And also, if you leave out the annoying sexist dudebro fans, the majority of people seem to be loving the season as well, which is awesome. I’m so glad this show is a thing that exists.

Biggest disappointment? This should be no surprise for people who know me but Suits this season has been an utter Mudmare. It’s dragging on this boring serialization and doing no characters any favours in terms of development. I loathed a lot of season 6, but even that one had more excitement going on than this one. I love the addition of Alex and more Oliver is great, but everything else I want nothing to do with. And the HUNDREDTH EPISODE is airing next week and I feel no excitement whatsoever. None. This is not what a TV show should instill in its viewers for a landmark episode. This show shouldn’t have even made it to 100, if you ask me, or at least its journey should’ve been a lot different.

SB: The Sinner has me absolutely hooked. It's mysterious, but lays enough breadcrumbs in the episodes to allow the story to keep moving along, and Jessica Biel is terrific. Could I do without the side plot of Harry's affair? Yes, but even that storyline doesn't slow the show down. Still making my way through The Defenders and it is really good. Raven's Home is also really enjoyable. I've tried to give Somewhere Between a go, and it's been an ok-ish show, but too many characters make dumb decisions which leave me yelling at the screen & I don't feel like the show knows exactly what it's doing with itself.

Biggest disappointments were Orphan Black and strangely enough Wynonna Earp. I'm in a minority that didn't like the series finale of Orphan Black, and felt they could've done a heck of a lot more with that final season than they actually did (Delphine's absence towards the latter of the season was nonsensical) and I really didn't agree with Rachel ending the series alive. Wynonna Earp, as much as I absolutely adore the show, just hasn't been that great. I think getting rid of the revs of the week was a bad idea, the widows aren't that scary, and their talk of Nicole getting a back story & being part of the main group has amounted to a 1 episode wife & the occasional scene with characters that aren't Waverly.

DC: [Disappointment] Though we are only half way through I feel Midnight Texas needs to push more . Some very likable characters but season 1 needs s bit more bite.

DR: 1)Hands down the biggest surprise and winner for me this summer has been Salvation on CBS, it's edge of your seat action, good writing and a great cast.

MP: Biggest surprise: The Bold Type, I really didn't expect much from this show and it turned out to be a gem. Biggest disappointment: The Defenders. It's fine, but it's far from being what I thought it could be.

JC: a) I think it's safe to say Game of Thrones is one of the biggest winners this summer. Aside from that, I haven't really paid much attention to which shows are doing well. I assume Wynonna Earp did well, considering the online reactions. I didn't see much buzz about Midnight, Texas so I'm a bit worried about that one. The Bold Type got a lot of positive fan reaction, but I'm not sure it translated to the ratings.

b) I was a bit disappointed with the second half of Shadowhunters. It just didn't quite meet my expectations. My biggest surprise was The Bold Type. I figured it would be a new guilty pleasure for the summer but it turned out to be my new favorite of the year.

LM: Game of Thrones totally delivered in every episode for me. 12 Monkeys was also another super strong show this season. I hated the 3 day roll out of the entire season though. I was disappointed by Twin Peaks. It took way too long to get back to the characters we really cared about and while Lynch's visual style is rich, someone needs to rein him in! I found the long visuals putting me to sleep on more than one occasion. I think the entire series could have benefitted from being 8 episodes. Would that GoT got 18 and TP got 7!

Game of Thrones has aired it season 7 finale after a rollicking season. One of the talked about stories in the show is "Jonaerys." Do you think it crosses a line or ruins the show for you in having two protagonists who are aunt and nephew hooking up and *spoiler alert* having sex in the final episode? Or whatever, it happens?

LS:2. Erm. I don’t go here but incest = egregiously bad. End of story.

SB: I've never watched an episode of Game of Thrones and never intend to, but incest is gross. It's one of two things that completely puts me off of shows/movies. I don't care what genre or time you are set in, or what purpose it apparently serves, you don't need it.

KL: I think incest between two antagonists (Jaime and Cersei), especially when the characters are aware, is ok as it makes you hate them even more. But incest between two sympathetic protagonists is debatable, regardless of whether the said characters know they are related or not.

Personally, I think them falling in love serves a purpose in terms of story in that they will probably have a child who will be "the prince that was promised" being born out of fire and ice. If this was just a random, why not have an aunt bang her nephew storyline that didn't lead anywhere then, yeah, it would be a bit more problematic.

MP: I guess I will always be the devil's advocate in this case. Yes, they are related, but the key element here is that they don't know it yet. We are all asking this question too early because we know it's weird, we know it's incest. You have to put yourself in the characters' shoes here: they don't know they are related so the fact that they are attracted to each other isn't wrong. We, the viewers, are the only one it makes cringe. As of now, they are not committing incest per se, not from their point of view.

Sure, if they keep it up once they find out they are related that will be different. BUT, on the other hand, their incest would also be much different than Cersei and Jaime's, for instance, who are not only twins but were brought up together and have always known that what they were doing was wrong. And now they are having another kid, and they still have no issue with that. Jon and Dany would not have kids, if anything they would just be in love. Sure, she is his aunt, but they are only blood-related, they have been brought up in such different contexts that they are hardly family. So my point is, there is an innocence to the attraction between Jon and Dany. It is not as twisted as the one between Cersei and Jaime, who know they are in the wrong from the get go. Jon and Dany just think they are two people of similar age, of similar mindsets, who are attached to each other. Will the news of their family relation affect that? That is the real question.

JC: I'm pretty sure Game of Thrones already crossed that line in the first episode with Jaime and Cercei. Compared to that, Jon and Dany hooking up doesn't seem that big of a deal. I think what happens after they find out they're related will be more telling.

LM: Well, color me shocked. I really didn't think they'd get there, but they did. I can't say that I was repulsed by the sex scene - certainly not in the same way as with Jaime and Cersei. First of all, they are both stunning to look at - and please note the equality of nudity. I'm going to allow this not to be going too far because they don't know they're related - and that has been done to death on soap operas, so I don't think people can be too self-righteous about it. I do wish a raven had reached them in time, but it didn't. I think we can all be confident in knowing that as soon as they find out, that aspect of their relationship will be over. I think it will cross a line if it doesn't stop. And too bad, because they are a delightful couple.

3. The newest TVLine Blind Item, a minor one, briefly mentioned at the end of the article here states a relatively new one hour drama will dabble in the supernatural. This is followed a day after on Twitter with Melisa Benoist (Supergirl) being spotted on the Riverdale set . If this means she will actually be making an appearance, though not confirmed, what are your thoughts? Does this make any of you Supergirl and/or Riverdale fans want to tune in to Riverdale?

SB: To be polite, I very much hope Supergirl & Riverdale do not cross over. The superhero crossovers are messy and pointless enough (when you need a portal opener to weave Supergirl into the Arrow-verse it is really time to stop). Supernatural doing a scooby-doo episode works because it isnn't a show that takes itself too seriously (from what I've heard at least). How would they explain Riverdale & Supergirl crossing over? A crazy dream? Someone drinks too many milk shakes and starts hallucinating? I don't wanna get too into the politics of the two shows, but I'm very close to giving up on Supergirl and watch Riverdale with the defense of it filling my 'problematic show' quota. I do not think a crossover would ramp up the viewers for either show though.

DC: I feel the Supergirl pic might be a promo of some sort for CW but you never know!

DR: First of all I think everyone needs to take off their speculation glasses. There is NO Supergirl/ Riverdale crossover! The shows likely film on the same lot and Melissa Benoist visited the Riverdale set, the end, period. I really hate when people read more into a situation than is there. In regards to crossovers in general I don't mind them if they're well done, the CW's last year was a major disappointment to me. I'm going to reserve judgement wholely on the CW until I see this year's event that has promised to be a true crossover involving all 4 superhero shows fully, hoping that means they are going to show Supergirl, the show, the respect I think they were not given last year.

JC: I highly doubt the CW is planning a crossover between Riverdale and Supergirl. I'm sure there's another explanation for Melissa being on set. However, I do think it'll be Riverdale that dabbles in the supernatural. This has been speculated for a while.

LM: Virtually nothing could make me watch Supergirl OR Riverdale. I'm really only watching Supernatural because I have since the beginning. Supernatural has simply utterly lost its way. It's a sad day when I have to say that crossing a show like Riverdale which attempts to be serious and edgy would now be jarring with a series that no longer takes itself serious at all. CW needs to stop with the crossovers.

DARK MATTER, "Nowhere To Go", August 25, 2017, Actors: Jodelle Ferland, Alex Mallari Jr. and more, The Scene: The Black Ships are here
Kollin: Who'd have thunk it that the Dark Matter season 3 finale would have ended with Five, Ryo and Wexler, a mere secondary character and oft antagonist, in one room? This moment was the culmination of a huge war, done really well with the limited budget of the show, but wow, watching those black ships come out of the portal was frightening and grand. Dark Matter's main story with all this corporate war mumbo jumbo was dry since it started, but now things are finally kicking into high gear with the invasion of aliens and this closing scene did a great job of hyping up the crazy things about to happen. #RenewDarkMatter

GAME OF THRONES, "Beyond the Wall", August 20, 2017, Actors: Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Rory McCann and more, The Scenes: Daenerys and her Dragons arrive to save Jon and company & Arya and Sansa's confrontation & Jon and Dany talk & The Hound and Tormund's first interaction & The Hound taunts the Army of the Dead
Justyna K: First of all, I very much enjoyed all the interactions between the Company of Seven. They were both hilarious and brilliant. However, it's impossible for me not to choose the moment when Dany arrives with her Dragons. The visuals, the cinematography and the music of it were quite breathtaking and a perfect example of why this show is such a standout for me. There's so much heart and effort put in every scene that watching the show can often feel like a true movie experience. Outside of the incredible work done when making this scene, it's also such a powerful and important part of the story. Dany finally faces the Night King and realizes the true danger everyone is facing. Her dragons take down quite a few of the soldiers in the army of the dead. And she's able to save most of the fantastic company that went on this suicide mission. It's very much a last second save but it's such satisfying entrance that I really didn't mind the timing of it at all. And then there's Viserion's death. Even though it was certainly a predictable one, it was still hard to watch him fall. Such a powerful creature falling in such a brutal and sudden way. Just the look on everyone's faces, the shock and pain on Dany's, show exactly how much it mattered and how things are going to be different from now. Excellent performances by the cast & crew. Kudos!
Marko: Arya and Sansa's confrontation. Even though I'm not the biggest fan of this plot point I found the scene really strong and impressive. Both actresses delivered convincing performances with hints that they might not be that oblivious to Littlefinger's mischief.
Kollin: The Hound and Tormund's first interaction. The two big lugs officially meet during their trek up north and, as can be expected, it's hilarious. Tormund's jovial craziness played well off the moody and grumpy personality of The Hound. The ginger's facial expressions were especially hilarious, as you can see he enjoyed getting under the skin of The Hound and taking advantage of the fact he is a big softie under that mean exterior. Hopefully, this is the first of many interactions between them.
Darth Locke: The Hound Taunts the Army of the Dead/Wights.
Lisa: Tormund gets to know the Hound and the two discuss Brienne of Tarth... The scene shows so many sides of Tormund! He starts by teasing the Hound to take his measure as a soldier - he has to fight with this guy he doesn't know. He immediately sees that he's got an issue with his gigantic scar - but he also bonds with the Hound over it when the Hound declares he hates Gingers - we're both touched by fire. Tormund is so adorable when he admits that he's not "with" Brienne yet... He also demonstrates that he loves Brienne's spirit - not just her beauty when he realizes - rather breathlessly - that the Hound really does know her when he describes her as looking at you like she wants to rip out your liver! The Hound proves himself in battle - and that maybe he can make a friend when he's the one to save Tormund from certain death - demonstrating that even the Hound has changed profoundly.

KILLJOYS, "Reckoning Ball", August 25, 2017, Actors: Hannah John-Kamen, Luke Macfarlane, The Scene: Dutch and D'avin kiss
Kollin: This was one of the best works we've seen from Macfarlane as D'avin. In this scene Dutch tells D'avin not to tell Johnny about her dying because "he wouldn't be to handle it," yet she does not think how he feels on the matter. His anger and sadness could really be felt in this scene - his voice even cracked while he spoke, which made the dialogue feel so much more raw. This would lead to their first genuine kiss and it was one that was done so well. The moment was tender and quiet, the lighting dim, and it wasn't dwelled on too long, the scene cut to black just at the right moment. Killjoys has been a great example of a show that does not let its relationships dominate the episodes, it's used just enough to develop character as opposed to doing romance for the sake of creating melodrama ala Wynonna Earp. All of which made this moment, one that was earned over three seasons, so much more meaningful and impactful. #RenewKilljoys

RICK AND MORTY, "The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy", August 20, 2017, Voiced by: Justin Roiland, Chris Parnell, Sarah Chalke, The Scenes: Rick and Jerry have a fight & Morty gives Beth a piece of his mind
Laura: Now that's character development, and that's a fight that has been a long time coming, actually it was like three years in the making. Hoo boy. Where do I begin? Every single time Rick tries to open up and actually attempts to be a good person something like this happens. It happened first with his beloved Birdperson. Now he opens up to Jerry saying that he knowingly had a part in his divorce with Beth, and boom, he nearly gets killed. These conspiracists/hitmen nearly get Jerry to turn on Rick completely but they manage to veer off the roller coaster’s path to safety? Somewhat. As Jerry is getting eaten by this monster Rick lets out a lot of anger and resentment he has had building up inside him about Jerry. He cites that he’s a predator, and his failures and shortcomings he uses to get others to take pity of him, and this spreads misery to others and those are his prey. Phew. It’s a bit on the nose, sure, but I think Jerry really needed to hear that. Jerry gets a chance to retaliate and, naturally, they both decide to keep everything that happened on that adventure to themselves. So I guess that includes the part where they pretty much boned inside of a wormhole experience? Okay, good. I think it’s for the best that the rest of family don’t know that. Marine: Morty gives Beth a piece of his mind.

THE BOLD TYPE, "The End of the Beginning", August 22, 2017, Actors: Meghann Fahy, Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee and more, The Scenes: Sutton leaves messages for Richard & Jane offers her room for Kat to storm off into
Marko: I loved all the emotions Meghann brought to this scene. This one little scene showed all how complex and strong Sutton is. The transition between vulnerability and strength was so well handled, Sutton's heartbreak was palpable to say at least.
Luana: Jane offers her room for Kat to storm off into. I love the relationship between these women, it was so heartbreaking when Kat opened up to them, telling them how she felt about the situation she was in, afraid that any of them could lose their jobs. And when she wanted to storm off but didn't have a room, Jane provided hers, even if she was one of the people the storming off was directed at. I can't get enough of them, even when they're fighting.

THE DEFENDERS, "Ashes, Ashes" & "The Defenders", August 18, 2017, Actors: Élodie Yung, Sigourney Weaver, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, The Scenes: Elektra kills Alexandra & Jessica and Luke talk at the bar after Matt's "demise"
Justyna K: There's so many things and scenes that I loved in this series. All the interactions between the Defenders were absolutely brilliant and it was great to watch the story of Elektra's transformation. Élodie Yung and Charlie Cox both gave truly powerful performances and their dynamics made for some of my favorite moments on the show. As much as I would love to include Matt and Elektra's final confrontation in the article I need to highlight the most surprising and excellent twist of this miniseries - the scene where Elektra kills Alexandra. The relationship between these two was another one worth attention but as it quickly becomes clear it's all built on a lie. Once Elektra meets Matt she begins to remember her life before the return from the dead. At the end of the episode six the viewers are not yet aware of just how much does Elektra know and where her loyalties lie. So it makes for such a shocking and powerful scene when Alexandra demands from her weapon, the Black Sky, to take the lives of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Daredevil. For a moment we believe Elektra is following the orders and the focus of the scene shifts directly to Alexandra (brilliantly played by Sigourney Weaver) who makes a great speech about her power and achievements as the Leader of the Hand. That's when Elektra stabs her from behind and stops the speech with one sentence "His name is Matthew". After killing her "savior" Alexandra, Elektra reminds her true name to the remaining Fingers of The Hand and announces that they all work for her now. Each episode of the show left me wanting more but this ending was definitely one of a kind. I didn't see it coming at all and I'm very glad for that. It was such a change for the character, the story and the show. Then seeing Elektra with Matt in the finale only made it better. I can't wait to see what's going to happen with these two. Their story ended up being one of my favorite parts of the show and it was such a great surprise. So excited to see what's next. Kudos to the entire cast & crew for their wonderful work on the series!
Marko: Jessica and Luke talk at the bar after Matt's "demise". There were plenty scenes in the 2nd half worthy of a nomination but this one really stood out to me. And this one was all Krysten Ritter. She did so much with so little cause the energy she brings to the role of Jessica Jones is impeccable. Matt's sacrifice brought out all the pain and guilt hidden within her but with Luke's words of encouragement she found a way to slightly forgive herself.
Milo: Elektra kills Alexandra. This was a WTF moment that I didn't see coming at all, and really ended the episode on an interesting note, with a great game changer. Whilst it was disappointing to see Sigourney Weaver's character killed as she had been such a great villain, the death really stood out for me as a highlight of the season so far.

THE NIGHT SHIFT, "Land of the Free", August 24, 2017, Actors: Eoin Macken, Scott Wolf, The Scene: Scott and TC discuss admitting the detainees into the hospital
Antonia: Scott and TC discuss admitting the detainees from the immigration detention center into San Antonio Memorial Hospital. These two have never been on the same page, so seeing them actually agreeing on something, anything is extremely refreshing. The fact that they agreed that the soon-to-be deported illegal immigrants deserve medical care is even better. Seeing two adversaries agree on this effectively reiterated idea that illegal immigrants are people and that they deserve medical care just like anyone else. It was also great how the show didn’t pat itself on its back for #wokeness in this scene, instead letting the characters be their slightly antagonistic selves, with TC’s disbelief at Scott and Scott’s snarky “You don’t own the moral compass for the world, TC.”

THE SINNER, "Part IV", August 23, 2017, Actors: Jessica Biel, Bill Pullman and more, The Scenes: Cora undergoes hypnosis and starts remembering & Cora asks Harry not to give up on her
Samantha: This show just gets better with every episode and this whole scene was magnificent. Ignoring the therapist's advice and continuing to push Cora to remember something she wasn't stable enough to remember was irresponsible to say the least, but yet I was cheering Harry on because I was desperate to know more.
DarkUFO: Cora undergoes hypnosis and starts to recall some of the events of the night she was taken.
Luana: Cora asks Harry not to give up on her. This quiet scene where Cora realizes Harry is the only one truly on her side and she doesn't want to lose that. Even if she has been fighting him every step of the way, she realizes he's the only one helping her get to the truth.

WYNONNA EARP, "I Hope You Dance", August 25, 2017, Actors: Melanie Scrofano, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Tim Rozon and more, The Scenes: Wynonna tells Waverly that she is her sister & Wynonna and Doc have a moment at the end
Samantha: Wynonna tells Waverly that she is her sister and orders peacemaker to shoot Rosita. I don't think I can ever emphasis enough how much I love Wynonna & Waverly's relationship. Rosita tried to seize on Waverly's insecurities over her heritage and despite being in labor, and dealing with a crazy rev trying to steal her baby, Wynonna can still pull an inspirational speech out of the bag and order her gun to do the business. Doesn't matter how much they fight or disagree with each other, Wynonna & Waverly will always be there for each other.
Luana: Wynonna and Doc have a moment at the end. I'm so happy the baby is Doc's, and it was so sweet and heartbreaking at the same time seeing them in pain for sending their daughter away. And Wynonna vowing to break the curse so her little girl doesn't have to was just perfect, now that Doc can grow old I'm all for them growing old together.

Scene Of The Week - August 20, 2017 + POLL

GAME OF THRONES, "Eastwatch", August 13, 2017, Actors: Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Kristofer Hivju, Rory McCann and more, The Scenes: The Ending & Jon touches Drogon
Justyna K: Many happy returns and reunions took place in this episode but it's the moment at the very end that stole the hour for me. Just the fact that all these characters, who never really had a chance to interact with each other before, are heading out together to face their worst enemy gives this scene such a powerful meaning. I'm very much excited to see the dynamics between these men and all the fights ahead of them. It's quite surreal to imagine this company of seven characters from completely different backgrounds and stories join forces for this suicide mission. I do hope most of them will make it but I'm definitely expecting the loss to be a part of this journey beyond the Wall. When Jon, Davos, Gendry and Jorah arrive at the Eastwatch we get a glimpse of what the interactions between the group will be and it's already brilliant. With Tormund, the Hound and the Brotherhood there, things are about to get even better. Can't wait. Absolutely loved that final shot with everyone facing the North. Kudos to cast & crew for yet another great episode.
Milo: The way that the hastily assembled characters were heading out at the end of an episode on a suicide mission echoed The Magnificent Seven and other such movies in how they were assembled from a bunch of misfits who never got on well into a team. The shot of them going North of the wall was epic, ending the episode on a really strong note.
Darth Locke: It's not so much that scene like this wasn't anticipated at some point, but rather there is something so emotionally gratifying at seeing a long-wished belief further realized. The show has always been good at nuance and doesn't always need words to reveal some of its greatest mysteries, but this scene really was done so well and was rightfully placed in the narrative, as Jon is about to leave Daenerys to head out on what could easily be perceived as a suicide mission. Looking back it took this almost tender and mysterious scene and made it all the more bittersweet looking ahead, as the penultimate episode of the season feels like it's going to be another game changer.

HALT AND CATCH FIRE, "So it Goes", August 19, 2017, Actors: Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy and more
The Scene: Opening Scene
Milo: Fast paced with a brilliant score, this opening scene instantly thrust us back into the new season with an excellent starting point as we got to see what Joe and Gordon were up to. I've been really looking forward to and I was sold on this from the get go.

MIDNIGHT TEXAS, "Sexy Beast", August 14, 2017, Actors: François Arnaud, Peter Mensah and more, The Scene: Manfred kills the Succubus
Darth Locke: This episode was just plain fun, being delightfully silly in a lot of respects, but I chose this scene, because of the effort Lemuel makes to give this creature a chance coming right after last week's episode with Lemuel taking a chance with other vamps that he nearly dies for. Manfred deciding to just cut to the chase was in some ways hysterical by being somewhat anticlimactic (and fits right in with the end of the first novel's narrative)--and shows thoughtful story progression, despite having a case of the week feel. But what about those teeth, though?

RAY DONOVAN, "Las Vegas", August 13, 2017, Actors: Lili Simmons, Liev Schreiber, The Scene: Final Scene
Darth Locke: Natalie James shows up on Ray's doorstep after saving her own dog. I really was not expecting the second episode of the season to be so good, but it was so well put together and meticulously layered, while also remaining so heartbreakingly surreal. It's clearer now to see Abby echoed through many of the newer female cast and also Ray's long deceased mother. The final scene with Ray just staring at the opening in the wall, the ones where the raccoons never were, with Natalie taking matters into her own hands after Ray had failed to save the dog himself was such poignant way to end the episode.

RICK AND MORTY, "Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender", August 13, 2017, Voiced by: Justin Roiland, The Scene: Rick leaves a heartfelt drunk message for Noob Noob
Laura: It was kind of hard to pick a scene from this thrill ride, but I think it has to be either this one or the dance party at the end. And while that was fun, this one was just cruel and hilarious to see. I don’t even know if it was really meant for Noob Noob anymore. What was all the baby decor and aesthetics doing there at the beginning of the ride? I thought surely that was Rick trying to have Morty remember his childhood and his innocence. I don’t know. But to see Rick actually cry was worth everything to me. And it’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last. This man does care…it’s just in odd, staggering ways.

DJRiter: Grace and Darius dancing and opening up to each other, while both of them are high off the Russian drug! Grace is becoming one of my favorite kick-a** heroines and Salvation, with its great writing and cast is fast becoming my favorite summer show!

SHADOWHUNTERS, "Beside Still Water", August 14, 2017, Actors: Matthew Daddario, Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood and more, The Scene: Jace's death
Justyna K: It was a truly great finale of this much improved second season of the show. There were several moments worth highlighting but it's the scene of Jace's death that hit me the most. Though the death itself ended up being reversed pretty soon it doesn't take away from this powerful moment, made especially memorable by seeing the parabatai bond breaking. After watching the episode I came to the conclusion that this bond, represented on the show by Alec and Jace, is probably my favorite thing about the series and I wish we would get more focus on it. In this particular scene we see the sudden death of Jace and heartbroken Clary staying by his side till his last breath (great performance by Katherine McNamara) but in parallel we also follow Alec and the horrible pain he's feeling with his parabatai dying. The emotional aspect of the scene is especially clear with the flashbacks of the growing bond between Jace and Alec over the years, going back even to their childhood. I didn't expect this one to happen and the editing, along with music and actors' performances, made this scene especially memorable and quite possibly one of the best in the series for me. Kudos to cast & crew for all their work in this moment and the entire episode!

SUITS, "Home to Roost", August 16, 2017, Actors: Jordan Johnson-Hinds, Patrick J. Adams, The Scene: Oliver kills it in court
Laura: It was even harder to pick a scene from this show and this episode this week. Every week is becoming increasingly harder to choose. And despite this being yet another short scene, again, I had no other choice here. Oliver finally being able to kill it in court was everything. And Mike sitting there in the back to watch him was the best! Unfortunately it was short lived because Alex has some weird, shady agenda but it was amazing. I hope we can still continue to see more of Oliver despite this prison case going off the rails.

TEEN WOLF, "After Images", August 13, 2017, Actors: Dylan Sprayberry, Michael Hogan and more
The Scene: The final scene
Marko: The final scene, Gerald's big plan revealed. I really enjoy the back half of TW's final season and the build up towards the revelations was perfectly handled. Tyler did an amazing job directing and somehow Dylan's performance felt reliable.

THE DEFENDERS, "Worst Behavior", August 18, 2017, Actors: Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Élodie Yung and more, The Scenes: The Defenders fight together for the first time & The Birth of Black Sky
Justyna K: There's so many things I loved about this miniseries but fortunately the two scenes that I wanted to highlight the most from the first half of the season are both included in the article. Elektra's rebirth and transformation were such a powerful and brilliant sequence, with excellent performances by Élodie Yung and Sigourney Weaver. But the scene I wanted to focus on is the first fight of the Defenders. The show spends the first three episodes leading to this moment, to the part where our four main heroes finally meet and are immediately faced with dozens of fighters working for the Hand, including Elektra (or rather Black Sky). Such a good time to be a fan with all these characters joining forces. They don't all know each other but they recognize they're on the same side and support one another when needed. The fight in the hallway is brilliant on its own, with each of the characters getting their chance to shine but the most memorable part for me is Matt vs. Elektra. These two are both excellent fighters but in addition to their great skills the moment becomes especially significant when Matt is able to recognize his old love standing in front of him. His reaction and his subsequent actions in the next episodes are truly heartbreaking to watch. Kudos to Charlie Cox, who is absolutely fantastic in his performance throughout the series. The entire main fight is so well done. The choreography, the music, the shifts between characters, they all really set the tone for the story. Will surely go back to re-watch this one. Brilliant work by the cast & crew. Kudos!
Milo: First Defenders Group Fight Scene. I really loved the fight scene with Matt, Jessica, Luke and Danny against the Hand at the end of third episode. It was badass seeing them all fight on the same page together, especially with Elektra involved as well and everything paid out really strongly, playing to their abilities effectively.
Laura: I haven’t watched the show yet but this fight scene was pretty awesome and it’s making me want to binge all the seasons I haven’t seen just so I could get the context for this fight!
Marko: The Birth of Black Sky. Such an amazing scene. So beautifully executed with perfect performances from Élodie Yung and Sigourney Weaver.

Happy Sunday everyone and welcome to another Weely Round Table! This week we talk development season, lawsuits and underused characters. This week besides me (MK) the round table is graced by answers from Milo (MI), Laura B (DL), Laura (LS), Samantha (SB), Jamie (JC), Jaz (JZ), Lisa (LM) and Djriter (DR). You as always sit back, enjoy the read and join the discussion after you're done reading.

1.) Too early? This week each member of the Big 4 put a pilot commitment for the upcoming season on at least 1 project. Apparently, each member won a tough bidding war between the networks. What do you think about the prospect picking pilots up this early? And what are your thoughts on the future pilots in general?

MK: I always lol when I read the articles and they say that there was a tough bidding war going on for a show. Have the silliest ideas how that is looking. Still, I think that these early pick ups have their good and bad sides. And while I hope it will increase pilot and show quality at the end you can never be certain how the written word will transfer to the small screen.

MI: It hopefully should be a sign of the quality of the project that they're working on if it gets picked up this early.

DL: I think it's a good sign of networks beginning to transition and take a page from their Cable counterparts. They're starting to think about mid-season & summer and beyond and having things be put on "put pilot" gives a sense that they care about tailoring a project.

SB: If it means we get some new shows that aren't remakes, spin-offs or based on ideas that have been done a billion times before, I am completely here for early pilot pickups. Whether they'll actually find an audience is a different matter entirely. Pilot season has become an extremely bloated time, so picking up shows outside of that is pretty smart. Probably have a higher variety of actors/actresses available (not that it'll stop networks going all white) and allows for more time to develop the story.

JC: I don't really care if they're picked up early or not. As long as the quality of the show is good. Bidding wars are a good sign, though.

JZ: I think it’s an excellent idea as it gives writers time develop a strong pilot and (hopefully) an outline for the rest of the season should the series be picked up. A lot of the new shows we’ve seen over the past few years start off with a fantastic premise and exciting characters but as the series goes on, the storylines lack a clear direction or become too convoluted for their own good. As a result, viewers lose interest and we see these sorts of shows bleed rating by the midseason finale. To have more time to work on new programming, creators now have the opportunity to create a more comprehensive product that will hopefully solve this problem.

LM: The earlier pilots can be picked up the better. One can only hope that if there is a bidding war it's already an exceptional project. It also gives producers time to lock in talent - and with all the possibilities for actors now, they've never been busier - and therefore hard to secure. Of course, it also means that talent that is currently under contract - but may not be by the time actual shooting begins, may not have a chance to be considered. In balance, this is a good thing for tv watchers!

2.) Meanwhile The Little 1, The CW put two very ambitious projects in development. Can The CW handle topics like Sexual harassment and Slavery without going to soapy on it and having certain rating success?

MK: I am not totally without faith regarding The CW, no matter how much they dance with trashy levels sometimes they can pull off some surprises (CeG, The 100) but these two project they put in development are really heavy and I hope the scripts and people behind them are good enough to do the topics justice.

MI: The CW's shows have always fallen into the soapy romance trap at some point and I'm somewhat skeptical that they can do these topics any justice without falling into that trap. They are one of the networks I have the least amount of faith in at the moment (along with CBS but that's another unrelated matter), but all the same these are certainly ambitious projects so hopefully, they can diversify their brand a bit more and branch out successfully.

DL: I think most CW series are aimed for teens/YA and so they tend to have soapy melodrama and so I feel certain that most series, including these, will have those elements and that those elements will stick out because there is often not good production value or nuance to balance it out, but that's not to say that there shouldn't be shows that do that. Not everything has been to be documentary-serious or anti-cliche, just that there need to be some shows with similar subject matter elsewhere that take it more seriously and we have to be educated and know the kinds of shows we're watching and/or be willing to use shows as a jumping off point to go and better educate ourselves when dealing with sensitive and/or historical subjects.

SB: Most of The CW shows are aimed at teens/YA/comic fans and the storylines tend to revolve around love triangles, with character development + plot taking a back seat. I will always applaud network runners who want to try something different because there are too many shows on air all with similar premises. However, I severely doubt The CW's capability in developing any shows that include hard hitting storylines. It's just not the network for it.

JC: I've learned to be careful when it comes to the CW. I loved The Valiant, read it just recently, but I worry that they'll have the budget to pull it off. As for the pilot on sexual harassment, my expectations are extremely low.

JZ: Short answer, no. The CW is skewed to a younger audience and with that comes a tendency to sugarcoat issues that deserve to have complexity and breadth of discussion. If people watch these shows on the CW and expect a fully realistic portrayal then they’re going to be disappointed because the CW is not a network which lends itself to that sort of informational storytelling. It’s a network based on soap opera and drama.

There’s no doubt that no matter what they do it’ll be ratings hit. Any television show that deals with a social issue is a headline grabber and are going to be conversation starters whether good or bad. This is evident when Reign dealt with their sexual assault storyline and today with Riverdale and Supergirl over their portrayals of sexuality. People will still watch whether it be out of genuine curiosity or to examine whether the network can handle such nuanced topics.

LM: The CW does not do serious shows well. Maybe they'll prove me wrong, but even Arrow and Supernatural which began as dark and edgy were teen-ified over the years. I don't think that the serious nature of the subjects will ensure rating success. I think people who watch HBO/AMC for such shows won't give the CW a second thought.

DR: While I'll agree that most of the CW shows don't handle heavy subjects well, I do want to give some props to Supergirl for the way they handled Alex's coming out story. I thought it was handled beautifully and they're allowing the story time to evolve (though I know some elements have been expedited) without turning it into a cliche which was my initial fear.

3.) With many of The Walking Dead crew suing AMC. Who is in the right or who do you sympathize? Are the creative asking too much or are their claims legit?

SB: Generally I think it is hard to comment on these situations because there are going to be two very different sides to the story. However there has been an increase in cast + crews of shows suing networks or being in pay disputes, and I don't think that's all a case of actors being greedy or doing it in an attempt to get a better deal. I get that the longer shows are on licenses etc can get more expensive, but the networks have to remember that without the cast, crew + showrunners, they don't have any shows, which they make tons of money off. Especially The Walking Dead. I've never watched an episode and yet I still know about the show because it is so popular.

LM: It's always interesting to me when a show that has always claimed to have such a wonderful set suddenly starts to fall apart - I'm always skeptical now that it's just a public relations ploy. Given the recent troubles on set, I'm much more inclined to see merit on the plaintiff's side in these suits. Without seeing the actual complaints, it's impossible to judge if they are "asking too much" and without evidence, it's impossible to say whether their claims are "legit." - we'll leave that last judgment to the judge. However, based on what I know about Hollywood-accounting and the phonebook sized contracts that everyone has to sign, I'd say my sympathies lie with the "creatives." It's essentially the same problem that currently lies at the heart of copyright law. Copyright law is based on a balance between the rights of owners and the rights of users. But the owners are rarely the creators and in Hollywood, the owners are always the producers - NOT the creators themselves. I'll be carefully watching this unfold, but don't get your hopes up that we'll see much detail. Hollywood loves to keep its secrets. I'm betting most of this will be settled out of court and all we'll hear is that all parties are "satisfied" - meaning that no one is...

4.) In light of The Defenders coming out with it universally agreed to pace issues, something a lot of viewers can agree is common on many shows on the streaming service, is this 'Netflix formula' a problem? Do writers need to quicken the plots up for future Netflix shows?

MK: I honestly don't have this issue with Netflix shows. Yes, they are slow but as they are binge shows you don't have to wait too much for the pace to pick up. If I had to wait weeks for new eps I would more stress about it but at this point, I'm okay with it. I just need Netflix to slow down production a bit so I could catch all of their new shows.

MI: Yeah, pacing on Netflix shows really is an issue even with the shorter eight episode span of The Defenders. Sometimes treating the series as one long movie isn't the best way to go about things and there really needs to be enough content in an episode to keep it entertaining. Not everyone binge-watches every episode of a Netflix show at once!

SB: Ignoring The Defenders because I haven't yet watched, Netflix is the only streaming service I use and every single one of the shows I've watched has had issues. Stranger Things I gave up on after 2 episodes because it bored me. I didn't understand what the plot was trying to do with itself, some scenes were too long & nothing was really happening. Iron Fist was such a damn chore to watch! By the time I reached the end, I was actively rooting for Joy, her dad and the hand to be victorious because Danny was so annoying. Every episode until the finale was all build-up with no end product, and I ended up spending more time browsing on my phone than watching. Also after months of hype I gave up watching Las Chicas Del Cables (Spanish Netflix original) after 3 episodes. The pacing was again an issue along with character development & plain offensive storytelling. And then there's Jessica Jones of which I watched the first 2/3 episodes & haven't been back since, though it is still on my watch list. In theory, smaller episode counts are supposed to mean you get into the main plot quicker, because you don't have episodes to waste on killing time, and yet somehow they do.

JC: I do think a lot of Netflix shows have pacing problems but I don't think it's exclusively a Netflix problem. There are a lot of other shows where I have issues with the pace and the many filler episodes. I think shorter seasons would be a good solution here. I didn't struggle nearly as much with The Defenders and their 8 episodes, as I did with Iron Fist and Luke Cage and their 13 episodes. It probably also helped that we'd already gotten the introduction for all of the characters

JZ: I’m a fan of the slow burn that streaming networks bring to television. I like that it allows a show to develop more character driven the plot and I find myself being fully immersed in the universe over the show that focuses on the action or crisis. Although I will admit that I do find Netflix shows difficult to watch over a period of weeks and that this sort of storytelling (for me) really only works when I binge a series.

5.) Fall season is coming! Which of your favorite but neglected characters are you wishing a heck of season?

MK: Bonnie on HTGAWM. She did get more screen time in season 3, especially the second part but I want her to have a solo story and step away a bit from Annalise. Liza Weil is beyond talented she deserves a lot more.

MI: Harper on The 100! I hope Chelsey Reist gets a bigger role this season and her casting on Supernatural doesn't mean that her character will be killed off as The 100 writers were so fond of doing in the past. I'm hoping we see Roy return on Arrow too, it's way overdue at this point.

DL: The only shows that I'm caught up on and are returning for fall are Outlander and Stranger Things. I think for Outlander it will be good to see more of Jaime's side of things, especially the aftermath of BoC--I felt like last season was heavier on the Claire-related material. There's also a lot of new characters/or characters just barely introduced that I am also more interested in knowing like Roger, Brianna, older Ferg, and John Grey! For Stranger Things, I think it's obvious that Will has more of a story to tell this season and I think we're missing story on Hopper too, but I also think Lucas was shafted during the first season and I would like to see more from where the character is coming from.

LS: He’s not necessarily neglected, but his husband sure is! I want more Holt and Kevin shenanigans on _Brooklyn Nine-Nine_ this season, culminating in their “honest to goodness wedding” we were promised in Season 2. Is that too much to ask for? I would at the very least hope for more Kevin anyway. He’s one of my favorite characters and I understand the actor is super busy but I miss him a lot. There were so many hints dropped about him last year while he wasn’t even on-screen and we just *have to* check in on him soon. Or I might explode.

Also — can Eve come back to _HTGAWM_ now? Please?

SB: My favorite is technically dead which leaves me to route for Black Siren played by Katie Cassidy. I've seen her in a number of things over the years and she has always shone. On Arrow, she has been extremely hard done-by & I really hate this show for dragging me back in for what I'm sure will be another mighty fine mess because this show is incapable of having good storylines and character development. But I will still be here.

JZ: I want to see more of Winn Schott this season on Supergirl. He had a lot of deep, emotional turmoil in season one that has all but disappeared in season two. I’d like to see the writers go back to exploring his relationships with his family and less focus on Winn just being “the IT relief” or “the fanboy.”

I’m hoping Tabitha Galavan has a heck of a season on Gotham this year. I’m glad we finally get to see her as an individual after so many seasons of being in the shadow of her loved ones. Her relationship with as a big sister to Selina is one of the big things I'm looking forward to this season.

DR: I'd like to see more of the J'onn J'onz as "space dad" relationship with the Danvers sisters in season 3 of Supergirl. For the most part, I missed that surrogate father relationship he had with them in season 1. I'm hoping we'll see him more in that role when the Jeremiah Danvers story arc is addressed and concluded.
