In this detailed post, I explore the process of recreating the distinctive drum pattern from Nick Kershaw’s Human Racing using the Behringer RD-78, a modern take on the classic Roland CR-78 analog drum machine. Although the original track likely wasn’t recorded on a CR-78, the challenge was to capture the vintage analog beatbox vibe and replicate the feel as closely as possible with the RD-78’s capabilities.

I analyze the drum pattern, noting the longer envelope settings on the hi-hats and cymbals compared to the original CR-78’s typically short envelopes. The pattern consists of carefully placed bass drums, hi-hats, open cymbals, maracas, and congas, all arranged to create that laid-back, rhythmic groove. I use custom programming on the RD-78 to mimic the tonal qualities and timing nuances, including accents and percussive variations that add depth and movement to the beat.

Throughout the video, I provide step-by-step instructions on setting the envelopes, selecting appropriate percussion sounds, and sequencing the pattern, emphasizing how slight adjustments in envelope length and note placement can drastically alter the feel of a drum machine groove. This post is perfect for vintage synth enthusiasts, electronic musicians, and anyone interested in detailed drum machine programming techniques.

If you’re curious about analog drum machine recreation, programming vintage-style beats, or the RD-78’s features, this deep dive will give you practical insights and inspiration for your own projects.

In this in-depth tutorial, I dive into creating classic oscillator sync lead sounds on the Korg Multi/Poly, inspired by iconic synths like the Prophet 5 and PPG Wave. Follow along as I explain the core principles of oscillator sync, modulation techniques, and advanced tuning to craft dynamic, evolving sync tones.

Introduction to Oscillator Sync (0:00 – 1:10)

I start by explaining what oscillator sync is and how it works on the Korg Multi/Poly. Using examples from factory presets and custom patches, I demonstrate the characteristic “sync” tonal effect—where one oscillator’s waveform cycle is locked to another’s frequency, creating harmonic complexity without changing pitch.

Setting Up Two Oscillators for Sync (1:10 – 3:20)

Learn how to configure two oscillators for sync, including selecting waveforms (classic sawtooth waves) and assigning modulation controls such as the mod wheel to manipulate pitch dynamically. I show how oscillator one remains fixed while oscillator two’s pitch changes, producing the sync sound.

Understanding the Sync Effect in Detail (3:20 – 5:30)

Explore the oscillator sync mechanism visually through waveform displays and hear how tuning oscillator two affects the overtones and tonal complexity. I explain why syncing oscillator two to oscillator one works, but not the reverse, and how to balance oscillator levels for desired sound output.

Double Sync Mode: Syncing Oscillator Pairs (5:30 – 7:20)

Discover the Multi/Poly’s double sync feature, which links oscillator pairs (1 to 2 and 3 to 4) simultaneously. Using modulation controls and tuning adjustments, I create richer sync textures and explore chaotic pitch modulations for unique analog-style effects.

Exploring Alternative Waveforms and Modulations (7:20 – 9:50)

Beyond sawtooth waves, I demonstrate how sync sounds can be generated using pulse waves, chaos modulation, and digital wavetable oscillators. This section covers wave shaping and crossfading techniques to achieve both analog and digital sync timbres.

Sync Effects with Digital Wavetables (9:50 – 11:40)

Delve into sync applied within digital wavetable oscillators. By manipulating wavetable position and combining sync modulation with wave table scanning, you can produce complex, stepped sync effects characteristic of digital synths.

Using Pitch Envelopes for Classic Sync Leads (11:40 – 13:20)

I show how to use pitch envelopes to mimic the classic Prophet 5 sync lead sound. This involves setting pitch envelope parameters, enabling sync mode, and shaping attack and release times for the rapid pitch drops and rises synonymous with vintage analog leads.

Additional Sync Preset Examples (13:20 – End)

Finally, I showcase recreated classic presets such as the Prophet 5 pulse sync and the Korg Odyssey sync, highlighting the flexibility of the Multi/Poly’s oscillator sync feature. These examples illustrate practical applications of the techniques covered throughout the video.

Whether you’re a synth programmer, sound designer, or synth enthusiast, this guide provides a thorough, technical approach to mastering oscillator sync on the Korg Multi/Poly. Feel free to ask questions or request a similar tutorial for the Korg Modwave in the comments!

Last week, I posted a long-term review of the Behringer RD-78—Behringer’s clone of the classic Roland CR-78 drum machine. While I praised the RD-78’s vintage vibe and solid sound engine, I also highlighted a few key issues, including inaccurate rhythm variations and a Güiro sound that didn’t quite hit the mark.

In a surprising twist, Behringer released a firmware update (v1.0.16) just 30 minutes after my review went live. In this follow-up post, I document my experience updating the RD-78 using the SynthTribe app and test whether Behringer addressed the main problems.

Key Improvements:

Rhythm Variations have been refined and now sound closer to the original CR-78

Swing and groove feel more authentic on factory presets

You can now edit rhythm variations manually within the SynthTribe app

Still Missing:

Preset combining (like holding two buttons on the original CR-78) hasn’t been implemented—but I explain a workaround in the video

I also demo updated patterns like OMD’s Enola Gay, John Foxx’s Underpass, and Genesis’s Duchess to see how well the RD-78 now performs after the update. Spoiler: It’s a solid step forward.

Stay tuned—I’ll be releasing a RD-78 pattern pack based on these classic tracks soon!

Create FM-Style Bell Sounds on the Korg Modwave in 5 Minutes

If you’re into digital synth textures and want to explore FM-style synthesis on the Korg Modwave, this quick tutorial is for you. In just five minutes, I’ll walk you through how to craft beautiful, metallic FM bell tones reminiscent of the Yamaha DX7, but with the modern power of Korg’s wavetable engine.

This patch is simple to build but rich in tone—perfect for ambient tracks, synth-pop, and experimental soundscapes.

What You’ll Learn

How to use two oscillators to simulate FM synthesis

Why sine waves work best for bell tones

How to modulate one oscillator with another to create harmonic complexity

Using envelopes to shape attack and decay for bell-like dynamics

Layering techniques for a richer, more dynamic sound

Which effects (chorus, delay, reverb) enhance the FM bell sound

Why FM for Bells?

FM synthesis excels at creating harmonically rich and percussive sounds. By using one oscillator to modulate another, you can generate the kind of inharmonic overtones that define bells, chimes, and other metallic instruments. On the Modwave, you can easily build this kind of architecture using basic sine waves and a few clever modulation tricks.

Patch Details

Layer A: FM setup using two sine wave oscillators

Modulation: Oscillator 1 modulates oscillator 2 via frequency modulation

Envelope: Fast attack, soft decay to emulate a percussive hit

Layer B: A second FM bell tone pitched higher for shimmer

Effects: Compression, chorus, tape delay, and reverb for atmosphere

Using Pitch Envelopes on Korg Modwave, Wavestate & Multi/Poly

Unlocking Key Release Tricks & Classic Brass Punch

If you’ve ever wondered how to give your brass sounds more punch or how to shape your leads and effects with more expression, pitch envelopes might be the secret weapon you’ve overlooked. In this post (and video), we dive into pitch envelope techniques on the Korg Modwave, Wavestate, and Multi/Poly to help you master dynamic transitions and expressive tone shaping.

What Are Pitch Envelopes?

Pitch envelopes are like volume envelopes, but instead of controlling amplitude, they temporarily affect pitch over time. You can use them for:

Brass stabs with sharp initial pitch rises

FX sweeps and risers

Subtle key-release movements for natural decays

Dynamic attack variations that make patches feel “played” rather than programmed

Key Concepts Covered in the Video

1. Basic Pitch Envelope Setup

We start with an init patch on each synth and assign a pitch envelope with a fast attack and decay. This creates that signature brassy punch—ideal for synth brass, stabs, and horns.

2. Controlling Envelope Depth

Using modulation parameters or fixed values, we shape how much the pitch envelope affects the oscillator—just enough for expression without sounding over the top.

3. Release Tricks

Here’s where things get interesting:

On all three synths, you can tie the pitch envelope to key release.

This lets you create sounds that drop in pitch as you release the key, adding realism or dreamy effects to pads and leads.

4. Layering for Impact

With the Multi/Poly and Wavestate especially, layering two programs with slightly offset pitch envelopes gives incredible stereo width and motion.

Quick Setup: Pitch Envelope Brass on Modwave

Start with an Init Program.

Set Oscillator 1 to a saw wave.

Go to the MOD section → Assign Envelope 1 to Osc 1 Pitch.

Set Attack = 0, Decay = 0.2 sec, Sustain = 0, Release = 0.3 sec.

Adjust the envelope amount for taste (try +24 to +36 semitones for brass stab effect).

Optional: Route the envelope to key release or modulate depth via velocity for expressive playing.

Why This Matters for Sound Design

Using pitch envelopes transforms static patches into performable instruments. Whether you’re programming classic ’80s brass, expressive synth leads, or cinematic risers, this technique adds nuance and energy that presets often lack.

Watch the Full Video

Don’t forget to check out the full walkthrough on YouTube, where I demo these tips in action on all three synths — including some layered performance patches and motion sequencing!

Welcome to this video from The Digital Lifestyle! In this video, I’m showcasing my new sound collection for the Korg Multi/Poly—The PPG Collection.

This set features 52 performances and programs inspired by the legendary PPG Wave, a wavetabled synth from the early ’80s. I’ve meticulously recreated the sounds using the original PPG wave tables, which are freely available online but have been cleaned up, labeled, and organized for easy use.

The collection includes both a free, cut-down set and a full version for more versatility. The PPG Wave uses wave tables with analog filters, offering digital sounds with that classic analog warmth. I demonstrate various ways I’ve shaped these sounds, including smooth and harsh transitions, and how the 8-bit mode adds a vintage feel to the tones. Throughout the video, you’ll hear examples of: Bass sounds with digital clarity and deep analog undertones. Vocal and bell tones enhanced by 8-bit processing for that early ’80s digital vibe. Lead sounds, pads, and sequence-driven effects, perfect for cinematic or ambient use. A variety of dynamic performance layers, from electric pianos to ensemble strings and drum kits, all customizable to your taste.

You’ll also see how I use modulation and wave table positioning to create evolving textures and interesting sonic shifts—using both the Multi/Poly’s powerful modulation capabilities and the vintage qualities of these wave tables.

The set includes both individual programs and performances, plus the wave tables themselves, all neatly organized and ready for you to explore and integrate into your own projects.

The free set includes 5 performances and 5 wavetables. The full pack includes 52 performances, 52 programs and all 32 PPG wavetables.

In this video, I’m recreating the iconic drum pattern from Chris Rea’s “Fool (If You Think It’s Over)” using the Behringer RD-78, a clone of the classic Roland CR-78.

While the original track wasn’t made with a CR-78, the drum sound is similar to what you’d hear from an early drum machine, with two different versions of the track—the original ’78 version with that distinct organ-style auto-accompaniment and the ’80s version that leans more into a TR-808 vibe.

I’ll walk you through how I recreated the laid-back Latin feel of the track, starting with the kick drum and layering the snare, hi-hats, and percussion to capture that authentic sound. I’ll also show you how to add accents, bongo, and conga sounds, with a little metallic beat thrown in for a personal touch.

In this video, I recreate the iconic Roland CR-78 drum machine pattern used in Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s “Sacred Heart”, using the Behringer RD-78.
