The hardware feels solid to hold and the weight of 587g doesn’t feel heavy which makes for comfortable use both standing and sitting. The dual core 1ghz processor hasn’t shown any signs of impacting the experience using any of the standard applications, games or watching videos in HD via YouTube. I’ve found the quality of the screen to be very good and the resolution of 1280 x 800 hasn’t left me wishing for more. I fully charged the device but I won’t judge battery performance since any new gadget doesn’t reflect normal use patterns but after an extended time tweaking and playing the charge was at roughly 60% so acceptable in my view.

I was more interested in trying out Android first hand since my impressions have always been based on reviews or the experience of others. There was a learning curve of course but generally speaking my previous experience of using Windows Phone allowed me to discover gestures needed to control the system. The biggest change was the amount of customisation options for the home screens (as it turns out my belief that I hated multiple home screens holds true) with a choice of either application icons or “widgets” (Androids version of Live Tiles). These widgets come in all shapes and sizes so take up different amounts of space on each home screen and some can be resized as required. I still much prefer the Windows Phone / Windows 8 approach where the application icon is the widget (live tile) instead of having to make a specific choice. I’ll make the comment that while installing new apps resulted in a slew of icons being added to the home screen this isn’t any different to how Windows 8 will behave so I don’t feel this was a negative experience.

The standard applications for mail, contacts, etc, are all capable although I find it odd that Gmail and other email accounts are handled by separate apps. This was really where I came up against obstacles and made me realise that choosing a tablet, or mobile phone for that matter, should be primarily driven by the platform you have chosen (Google = Android, Apple = iOS, Microsoft = Windows Phone / Windows 8). I’m sure this doesn’t apply to everyone but during my short time with the Galaxy Tab I found trying to configure and access Microsoft’s platforms was a compromise. I think if you dabble in other eco-systems then those compromises are acceptable but for services you use daily it’s a worthwhile consideration. I do maintain a Google account for experimenting with their services and these certainly integrated easily and provided a feature rich experience.

I’ve also discovered that I’m not entirely sure where a pure tablet device fits into my computing needs and more than ever I can understand where a device like the Galaxy Note works as both a smartphone and tablet. I found that most tasks I carried out on the tablet I’d be just as comfortable doing on my smartphone although I will admit the increased screen size does improve the experience.

This is where my excitement for Windows 8 draws me back away from purchasing an Android or iOS device because I do feel that the new devices based on Microsoft’s latest OS are capable of more seamlessly morphing away from just consumption devices. This is especially true for the Microsoft Surface where the stand and keyboard are part of the device, so no need to go hunting for the dock or other accessories to turn them into creation mode.

I’d certainly recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 to anyone in the market for an Android based tablet but this isn’t for me. At least I can get Jose off my case now.

It’s always great to chat with Ed and we talk about how Microsoft is on the brink of a new Metro era with a strategy that is aligned across Windows 8, Windows Phone 7/8 and we also touch on the SmartGlass features coming to Xbox. Will Microsoft’s big gamble enable them to compete with Apple and Google who currently dominate in the mobile and tablet markets? We talk about the buzz this event generated, the hardware, and the potential impact on the usual OEM channels. Could the Surface finally offer some real competition to the iPad?

We then discuss the second big announcement from Microsoft when they unveiled an early look at Windows Phone 8 along with the news that existing devices will only receive a new 7.8 release which most likely will only bring the facelift to the start screen. Can Windows Phone 8 close the current feature gap to Android and iOS?

These announcements created some great discussions so the show is a little longer than usual. Do you agree with our opinion or do you feel there is a desperate move with nothing of substance once you look beneath the Surface? We are looking for guest co-hosts so get in touch below and let us know what you think.

We are also joined by guest John Hoole (Blog|Twitter) who has an interest in Apple, Microsoft as well as being a fellow Acer Iconia W500 Tablet owner.

Unfortunately Sheldon (@SheldonW) has also decided to move on from the show although we’d really like to get him on for one final show. Both Jon and I will be continuing with TDL Mobile so look out for the next show when we’ll have details of our sponsor Audible.com and if you’re interested in becoming a co-host then do get in touch and we’ll organise a guest appearance.

It seems that after a long time of waiting Microsoft is finally on target for providing a consistent experience across all devices and computers. The first steps on this journey began with the announcement and subsequent release of Windows Phone and has continued with the introduction of the Xbox 360 Metro Dashboard and the Windows 8 Metro Start Screen currently available in the Release Preview. Unless you have been living under a rock you will know that this consistency is built on the Metro UI which began its life with Windows Media Center. It is Microsoft’s hope that by bringing this Metro UI to Window 8 that as people learn how to navigate this new touch first interface that they will be drawn to Windows RT when looking to purchase their first tablet or slate device.

Now as Mary-Jo Foley (blog|twitter) reported we are getting close to Windows Phone developer summit that is scheduled for June 20th when Microsoft is expected to reveal information on “Apollo” which is the codename for the next version of the Windows Phone OS and Paul Thurrott (blog|twitter) has already given us a Windows Phone 8 Preview (the ideas I’ve come up with stem from some of the information Paul provided).

It makes sense that Microsoft would make improvements based on lessons learnt and enhancements to Metro made during the development of Windows 8 and the release of Windows Phone 7. As Paul has detailed WP8 should adopt the Windows 8 core and so I’ve been thinking about how elements of that could be adopted to keep a consistent experience and also improve from “Mango”.

At the launch Microsoft made a big deal about how Windows Phone was taking a different approach and building a platform where applications could integrate into the OS and also communicate with each other. This is an early implementation of “contracts” whereby applications can allow you to share information by email or social media without having to perform a manual “copy-and-paste” between apps. There are limitations and I have spoken to developers who were frustrated that they couldn’t integrate with the share option in Internet Explorer.

While thinking about what Microsoft might do with WP8 it made sense to me that they would extend this integration to include the “contracts” from Windows 8 and from there I started thinking about how they could make this experience consistent. I feel that edge gestures in Windows 8/RT could make it into WP8 and then I thought why not just include the full charms bar so that the experience is consistent.

The charms bar could be opened with the exact same edge gesture and provide the same experience thereby reusing the experience people have had in Windows 8. Each charm could even offer the same functionality and as you can see the “search” button has been removed from the bottom of the device.

Perhaps the context picking for search in Windows 8 might be hard to fit onto a mobile device but it would be a nice way to include universal search and also provide a consistent access point for both sharing and settings. The power here is that consumers only need to learn how to interact with these features once.

I know edge gestures could be difficult to implement on a small device but it has been done before with the Nokia N9 and would also fit in with the possibility that existing Gen1.x devices won’t be upgraded since their touch screens might not be able to support this.

I have never really liked the small arrow sitting in the top right of the start screen for accessing the full list of installed applications as it leaves the tiles off center so perhaps we could also see the “All Apps” copied from the Windows 8 start screen. The “app bar” already exists in WP7 so it’s not that much of a leap. Hopefully the app bars could be a little less cluttered on WP8 applications too as the options would now be accessed through the charms bar.

As you can see in these two images the “back” button is also removed so that would need to be worked into the UI of applications as it is with Windows 8 so again might be restrictive on a smaller device. This would also be a more difficult feature to drop due to compatibility with legacy WP7.x applications that should be supported via some sort of emulation in WP8. It would make for a cleaner device and also put an end to catching the capacitive buttons during a game of Fruit Ninja (although the remaining Start button would still be there of course).

The multitasking features of WP7 are currently accessed by holding down the back button so perhaps we might see the left edge UI from Windows 8 carried over to WP8 for task switching? I do hope that at the very least apps resume regardless of how they are started instead of the current implementation where they only resume when accessed via the back button.

Hopefully next week we’ll find out many of the features coming to Windows Phone 8 and just maybe some features I’ve suggested here could be included. What do you think and what are you hoping to see? Please let me know in the comments or better yet contact TDL Mobile so we can discuss it on the show.

I would like to thank Ian Dixon (blog|twitter) for compiling the images used in this post.

When Windows Phone was first available I noticed amongst the comments that people were saying how the network settings were buried compared to other mobile operating systems. I noticed this too as someone coming from Windows Mobile since on that OS you could tap the Wi-Fi symbol and this provided a way to jump into the settings.

Now while I didn’t find this a big deal I can understand the frustration. When Microsoft released the “Mango” update for Windows Phone they included an API that developers could use to jump to some of these settings and one such application is Network Dashboard. Another example is the Windows Phone Wednesday: Nokia Play To application I covered last week where you can jump to the Wi-Fi settings

When you open the app the main screen is the dashboard and this shows four animated tiles; Wi-Fi, Mobile Data, Bluetooth and Airplane Mode. To pin one of these tiles to your start screen you just tap and hold then select “pin to start” when you can move the tile where you want. Now when you press the tile from the start screen you will go directly to the appropriate setting. In the case of Wi-Fi and Mobile Data they also act as live tiles to indicate their status.

On the “app bar” is an information button and another for settings. This allows you to turn on the live tiles and also the background agent which is used to keep the live tile in sync with the actual status. This is required in case you switch off the appropriate wireless component from another entry point (settings or another application). Swiping left in the settings takes you to different tile designs but best of all are the reminders.

Now doing all you can to prolong battery life on a mobile phone is important and so you don’t want any wireless features left on that you don’t need. The problem here is that if the Wi-Fi is off while the phone is charging overnight then it can’t take advantage of synchronising wirelessly with the Zune desktop software. Using the reminders feature of Network Dashboard allows you to be reminded to turn on Wi-Fi at an appropriate time (a nice addition is that the reminder doesn’t activate if the feature is already active).

While this post is short I use this application daily and although it isn’t free it does offer a trial version that isn’t time limited. The “free” version doesn’t allow customisation of the tiles or the setting of reminders so if you want those extras the cost is 79p.

Last year I made an attempt to start a weekly post about Windows Phone and after only a few short weeks I came to an abrupt end after I published Windows Phone Roundup- 6th November 2011 which is, I’m sure you will agree, a pretty lame attempt. So here I Continue Reading

I’m aiming to use these posts to either look at applications I’ve found, comment on recent Windows Phone news or topics, and just share my views about the platform including where it needs to do better. At the moment I’m not going to be drawn into the whole “Apollo” will they/won’t they debate because for now there is no hard evidence worth talking about.

That said let me begin…

This post (Note he didn’t say “week”; Ed) I thought I’d focus on a new Windows Phone app that Ian (Blog|Twitter) already posted about here Nokia Lumia Play To DLNA app released and is available from the Nokia Beta Labs website. While Windows Phone 7 doesn’t include DLNA support within the core operating system OEM’s are able to create their own solutions and Nokia has done just that with “Play To”. This means that you will either need to be the owner of a Lumia 710 or 800.

The application is simple but effective and has just three main options upon starting up: connection, pictures and videos. Tapping “Connection” takes you to a page that has a quick way to switch on and connect to a “WiFi network” with the currently connected wireless access point shown if you are already hooked up. The second item is the “share content” and when tapped will show a list of available targets. Unfortunately neither of our Panasonic HDTV or Blu-ray player can act as a target so I resorted to testing with Windows Media Player (WMP) as a play to target.

After the connection is established you can then use the pictures and video options to select the media to play. I tried a video first, a time-lapse video of the game Red Dead Redemption that I keep on my phone (full version here), which after an acceptable delay starting playing inside WMP:

The playback was smooth and responded well to switching between play and pause. Looking at the interface the playback controls are very simple with only a play/pause and progress bar. While there is no skip forward/back you can grab the progress bar and drag it to a required time but with no visual clues displaying the frame that feature is quite limiting. The good news is that the Play To application is “Mango” (Windows Phone 7.5) ready and therefore supports multitasking so hitting the home button doesn’t stop playback and you can return to the app by holding down the back button. Alternatively using the back button on the phone to “exit” the application stops playback.

I then tried out the pictures option and you can select from either the local cameral roll (pictures taken with the phone’s camera) or any that you have synced using the Zune desktop software.

This works similar to the video sharing and you can then use left-right swiping gestures to flick between different pictures which then, after a short delay, appear on the target display. As with video you can use the home button to leave the application running and the last selected picture will remain visible.

Finally the starting page of the application is a panorama so you can swipe right to quickly access recently shared media. There is also some nice integration with Windows Phone so when you open the pictures hub you will see “Play To” listed under applications but also some odd omissions, for example, when you choose “share” from a picture the application isn’t included as an option. You also won’t find this listed under applications in the music+videos hub.

Perhaps some of these are related to Windows Phone limitations or the fact that this application is still a “beta” for now. You will have also noticed that I haven’t mentioned the streaming of music and although this is missing for now it is planned according to the details on the Nokia Beta Labs post.

That’s it for now until the next Windows Phone Wednesday post but please do leave any comments or questions below or even better get in touch with me on TDL Mobile.

We open the show with exactly that; a back and forth between Jase and I discussing what’s great and not so great about Windows Phone, and what Microsoft needs to do to bring it up to par with Android and iOS. Jon jumps in and provides his input as well but who’s side did he take? Unfortunately the debate is cut short but Jon and Jase continue on to cover the latest news in mobile. This is one you don’t want to miss.

The biggest reason though was because Windows 8 would work on the W500 and that is something I was and still am very interested in doing. I haven’t written too much about my experiences so far because John Hoole (Blog|Twitter) already did a great job of reviewing the hardware (Acer Iconia W500 Tablet Review) and also the Windows 8 experience (Windows 8 consumer preview on the Iconia Tab).

Now while the W500 is not one of the core touch devices that Microsoft are using to test Windows 8 (Experiencing Windows 8 touch on Windows 7 hardware) I have to say the experience has been really good with only edge based gestures causing some frustration and often requiring multiple attempts to bring up either the “charms bar” (right edge), task switcher (left edge) or “app bar” (bottom edge).

I’m not quite the driver addict I once was but given that the W500 had already received one firmware update for the touch screen, to resolve the phantom screen taps at the bottom right of the screen, I thought I’d take a look to see if the firmware had been updated again. As it turns out it had: Touch Panel Firmware 1007.2005

I haven’t been able to find any release notes but suffice to say that after I had updated to this latest firmware the edge gestures are far more responsive and my wife now finds the experience greatly improved.

Anyone else out there with an Iconia Tab W500 that is using Windows 8? Does this new firmware feel more responsive? Please let me know in the comments or better yet contact the show.

Eventually we make our way to this week’s announcements at MWC from ViewSonic, HTC, Sony and others. Ready, set, download!

The very first mobile I had, and every subsequent device, was a Nokia until I started a new job in 2007 where I was issued a Windows Mobile device and stopped using my 6310i. I hated that very first WM phone that required a stylus to tap out text messages and it was only when the HD2 (the first and only WM device to have a capacitive screen) came along that I found some love for the platform. Everyone I knew up until then had had Nokia phones and we were always comparing the latest models so it made me sad to see them slipping into obscurity.

I was really excited when the partnership with Microsoft and Windows Phone was announced and so when the Nokia Lumia 800 was finally shown off at Nokia World last year I contacted Nokia asking them for a unit to review for TheDigitalLifestyle.com, talk about on TDL Mobile, and also to show off to people I was trying to persuade to choose this as their next mobile device. I had received a reply from them saying they would add me to the waiting list and in the middle of January I was told they had a device I could use for 2 weeks. I provided them with an address and the phone was delivered the next day. Finally holding a device with that “Nokia” logo at the top again brought back fond memories and I couldn’t wait to see how the device felt to use.

Since the Lumia 800 has been out a while now, with plenty of reviews already available, I thought I’d share my impressions and comparisons to my existing device which is a Samsung Omnia 7. I’m also going to avoid covering the Windows Phone operating system but for anyone that would like to read more you can look back to my Thoughts on Windows Phone 7 and More Thoughts on Windows Phone 7.

When I opened the box I discovered the phone itself, wrapped in protective plastic, and underneath this are a series of trays containing (in order):

Quick Guide and User Guide

Protective Rubber Case (I’ve not had one of these included with other phones)

Charger (European plug in this case) with USB connector

Micro-USB cable for use with the charger for tethering (sorry Jose!) to a computer

In-ear headphones for connecting to the socket at the top of the device

The Lumia 800 makes a real impact and feels really well built in the hand such that I was reluctant to put it in the protective case but since I’d be responsible for any damage I decided to use it. Compared to my Omnia 7 the Lumia 800 doesn’t feel like it is going to slide out of your hand and with the rubber case it feels even safer. When I first switched the phone on I was greeted by the standard Windows Phone setup screens where I entered my Windows Live ID. After those few small steps I was greeted by the familiar Windows Phone home screen and this looks amazing on the 800’s AMOLED screen with Nokia’s “ClearBlack” technology. The curve of the Gorilla Glass screen has a real impact on how the tiles look and raises the impact when viewed for the first time.

I had planned on switching to using the 800 immediately but since it needs a Micro-SIM I was unable to use my existing SIM from my Omnia 7. So I used the 800 on Wi-Fi only as much as possible and this did give me the chance to compare these two devices as I switched between them. I certainly prefer the display of the 800 although this is offset by the fact the 3.7” screen is smaller than the 4” AMOLED screen on the Omnia 7 and while the resolution is the same (being fixed with Windows Phone) in direct comparison I’d choose the larger screen. Thankfully the virtual keyboard of Windows Phone is just as usable and I have found that typing is just as accurate. Really screen size is a personal preference but for me, having already dropped down from the 4.3” screen of the HTC HD2, I’d always choose a larger screen but visually the Lumia 800 wins easily. I’m certainly very excited about the Lumia 900 coming to the UK. I would add that everyone I have shown the 800 to the first comment has always been how amazing (Ed: “everyday”?) the display is!

After obtaining a Micro-SIM from T-Mobile I was able to switch exclusively to the 800 and I have really enjoyed using this device. As I’ve already said the screen is amazing and I have easily adjusted to the smaller 3.7” size. The main differences I have noticed is that the Omnia 7 has a hardware “home” button and this can be used to turn on the device but with the 800 this is capacitive, as are the “back” and “search” buttons, and so does not work with the phone off. This of course is another personal preference and I could adjust to this after prolonged use of the 800. The device itself feels really solid and the buttons on the right hand side for volume, power, and camera reflect that. Since I’ve mentioned the camera I’ll include a side-by-side comparison of the 5MP Omnia 7 and the 8MP camera on the 800.

As I’ve said on the TDL Mobile show the two main benefits of having Nokia making Windows Phone devices is that they aren’t also making Android phones and so aren’t distracted or splitting their marketing budget and the additional services they are able to bring to the platform. The three main services are Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps and Nokia Music. While not as advanced as some turn-by-turn navigation applications the free Nokia Drive provides a 3D map and gives good clear instructions as each turn approaches. You can also choose between night and day colours for those travelling late at night. Nokia Maps is also a useful application and works in much the same way as the alternative Bing driven “Maps” on Windows Phone. I think my main disappointment with Nokia Maps is it also provides the directions to places instead of switching to Nokia Drive with the destination pre-set.

Nokia Music is a really great way for people to enjoy music on the move without requiring any registration or tethering. There is a great selection of play lists across various genres and these easily downloaded and stored on the device (or you can just stream if you’re not worried about bandwidth availability or caps). The nice part of Nokia Music is that it also accesses your own music stored on the device so you get a single point of entry to your personal collection. There is also the ability to purchase music from the Nokia store. The interesting difference between the Lumia 800 and the Omnia 7 is that the 800 has a lower volume level and that also seemed to follow through to listening via a Bluetooth headset.

The main negative aspect I found of switching devices is a limitation of Windows Phone and that is there is no simple way to just re-install all your applications. While I can appreciate not everyone would want every application they have ever purchased or used to get put onto their new device there must be a better way. I either had to use the online Marketplace to view my previous applications and then manually search for them on the phone or I could re-install them from the web but that would be even more time consuming. There is also the fact that at the moment there is no way to copy over game progress meaning they must be all started again which is frustrating if you’re almost at the next achievement (for Xbox Live games).

So overall I’m incredibly impressed with the Nokia Lumia 800 even though I still feel disappointed that it is closer to a generation 1 Windows Phone due to the lack of front facing camera. The other criticism I have is that the cover to the Micro-USB port flips up and I’d be concerned that this would be snapped off too easily (this compares to the sliding cover on the Omnia 7). The fact that is my only real criticism, apart from personal preferences like screen size or hardware home button, speaks volumes about how much I love this phone. I should also add that the biggest benefit of the Lumia 800 is the 16GB of storage and has really made me appreciate how limiting the 8GB of the Omia 7 can be.

I would not hesitate to recommend the Lumia 800 and have really enjoyed showing it off to people that had been considering this device. They were impressed with the quality of the display and also the Windows Phone operating system. I would happily switch to using the 800 permanently as my only device although for me I wouldn’t purchase one only because of my preference for bigger screens. I am even more certain that my next device will be a Nokia when my contract expires in October 2012 and hopefully it’ll be running Windows Phone 8.

I’d like to thank Nokia for loaning me this device and hopefully I can get my hands on a Lumia 9nn series for review in the future.
