retrospectives

well, my love affair with the Forth Worth Modern continues… this weekend I finally made it over to see Glenn Ligon: America, his first mid-career retrospective originally shown at the Whitney last spring. The exhibition was wonderfully put together and consisted of over 80 of his most pivotal works, beginning from the 1980s.

Notes on the Margin of the Black Book (Guggenheim Image.)

I was most intrigued to see Notes on the Margin of the Black Book, a piece he made in the 1990′s using Robert Mapplethorpe’s extremely controversial The Black Book, which was a series of nude and homoerotic photographs of solely black men. Mapplethorpe’s book was received with a lot of resistance when it was published in 1986, many people (politicians, critics, writers, patrons, etc) were outraged and the responses varied covering many heated issues. Ligon, took seventy-one of these responses from all types of people, and printed them along side the photographs. It is really interesting to read all the different responses and feelings these photographs bring up and how invested people get. It all just made me love photography even more.. this is my favorite quote from the series and maybe the one I most agreed with, but then again, a lot has changed since these photographs were taken.

I could never be embarrassed by it becuase I just divorce myself from the image and after that, It’s just a picture.” -Jack Walls.

They don’t allow camera’s into the exhibition but I snuck a few of his new neon works, America.

America is reversed, but since some of the letters are the same backwards it provokes this feeling of facing away from us, but also towards us. Bringing up our expectation yet disappointment, identification yet alienation, that we sometimes feel towards this great country. (from the wall text)

I’ve been scanning a friend of mine’s film for the past couple days and I couldn’t resist sharing with ya’ll this awesome double exposure, taken from a photo adventure we went on down in Dallas last summer. Pin-TRY with Pinterest

Today I am introducing a new feature called Pin-Try with Pinterest. I am seriously addicted to Pinterest and always find recipes, projects & activities I want to try, so I thought I would start sharing some of the things I have attempted off the site!

Last week on my day off I decided to bake these Blueberry- Lemon Bars originally pinned from NoblePig. I wasn’t completely satisfied with the recipe so I made them again yesterday and tweaked a few things. I think I finally captured perfection.

You can find the full recipe here. I decided to use fresh blueberries rather than the dried kind and also used low-fat sour cream instead of the real heavy stuff. I also found that the type of oatmeal you use matters.. ALOT. The first time I made them I used Country Choice Organic’s Old Fashioned Oats. These oats were big in size and didn’t soak up the butter and lemon juice enough, leaving my bars a tad too dry. The second time I used Market Pantry’s Old Fashioned Oats which were a much lighter oat and absorbed easily. When they were done I let them cool then stuck them in the refrigerator to enjoy cold. This recipe says it makes about 20 bars, but I was able to make around 10..

Here is my final batch of deliciousness! They are super easy to make, perfect for the hot summer and really great as breakfast or just an afternoon snack!

I enjoyed one for breakfast while I drank coffee out of my favorite J-mug. ahh, summer!

This past weekend I went to the deep ellum market and then thrifting all around Dallas with my friends… My two favorite local stores I found were We Are 1976 and the Gypsy Wagon (both on Henderson.) They each had an eclectic mix of cool stationary, trinkets & camera love. Everything was oh-so pretty but also oh-so expensive.. Still it’s always fun to look & dream.

traveling local

I have been MIA the past couple days because I took a short but jammed packed trip to my favorite place in the world, Arizona. Even though I am quite outspoken about my detest for Instagram photography, I decided to give the app a try and document my trip using it. I don’t think my opinion has changed much, although it does make my photos look “cool” and more nostalgic.. I still find people who use it and think they are the greatest photographers ever… irritating.

Either way I spent the weekend embracing all of my favorite local spots (minus mellow mushroom but hey, I only went there for my favorite local beer) I love Phoenix’s personality and really believe Local is always better.

nostalgic by nature

A year ago from today, I left my Photography program feeling the way I think most art students feel when art school is over.. lost. Graduation comes and you gain your degree but you lose your labs, computers, printers, scanners, worn-down but beloved facilities, wise faculty and most of all.. your support system. The community of artists and friends that you could always count on being in the darkroom or computer lab at all hours of the night. The people who know more about you than your closest friends, because they’ve spent the last five years seeing your work, learning your inner demons, critiquing your images and obsessing over color balance, exposures and camera equipment with you. The people who don’t brush off photography as just a silly obsession, but know it as a way of life. The people who understand. It’s strange to leave art school and to know what to do next.

It’s hard to believe I graduated college exactly one year ago. It’s been a life changing year full of exciting developments. I got my dream internship in the Contemporary Art department at the Phoenix Art Museum and worked tirelessly on an exhibition I am so proud of. I traveled to Europe for the first time and saw so much art I went into an art-induced coma, AND after months and months of the never ending application process, I got accepted into a Masters program in NYC for the Fall.

Life is moving on.. but I still miss the smell of chemicals from the color processor, the eery sounds of Matthew Halls, walking past the critique room to hear a group of sleep deprived photo students arguing about sequencing….
