Oh, hello there Toques!

We were mentioned recently in a blog called : 'The Canadian Expat | Perpetuating Canadian Stereotypes Since 1979'. With a title like that, we were sold on taking a peek. In the brief post, they talked about our Rink Ratt style being inspired by "the iconic coloured stripes of the Hudson Bay Company".

Well, this is sort of true, but not quite. In the design of the Rink Ratt, you will notice 3 red lines, and 2 blue lines. You know what has 3 red lines, and 2 blue lines?

In fact, it was originally called 'Hockey Rink Style'. That was our concept with this style, and we love the way it turned out. Speaks to the nostalgia of times past, and to our love of hockey.

What Iceland and Vagabonds know about CHILLING beer

There's toilet paper on my beer, and that's a good thing.

Because you know you like drinking in the park ; ) , and because you 'forgot' your cooler at your friend's BBQ last weekend; you probably are in need of a low tech way to cool your beer while hanging out in the park, camping, "in a middle of a field", wherever you are. Well, Wade Shepard, of vagabondjourney.com, has found a very simple way of cooling your beers.

"We were camping, without refrigeration, and I was drinking a cool beer in the middle of a field in Iceland ...

Just wrap up the bottles in a blanket of wet toilet paper (or another material that retains water but also allows for it to dry) and wait for the water to evaporate a little. The drier the paper gets (the more the water evaporates) the cooler your beer should get."

Now, if it works with wet toilet paper, will it work with a wet Drink Toque perhaps??? I am willing to find out. Off to experiment, more on this later.

An Iowa Man Plans to Drink Only Beer until Easter ... (Okay, in fairness, he is doing it to observe Lent, but it's the beer that counts)

"Where beer is concerned, Reuters reported today that higher costs for malting barley could force brewers to raise beer prices next year, though there's a reprieve this year from tight supplies from Canada, the biggest exporter.

Quality of some barley is in question because of flooding in Canada and Australia.

“Drink up now, is my advice," Dwayne Dubois, the CFO at Big Rock Brewery, told Reuters, signalling price hikes later this year or, more likely, next year." (Globe and Mail, Mar.7, 2011)

You see, every few years, I like to take a full month off from any drinking of alcohol. Shed a couple post-Holiday pounds a little more easily, get my liver doing push ups, etc. It just feels right sometimes. And, by the third week, I usually start to feel a whole lot smarter, ready to write my genius manifesto ... but, as it turns out ...

(Not sure how I came across this article, but I sure like its' findings!)

ALCOHOL may make you act like an idiot temporarily, but Queensland scientists have discovered that it won't damage your brain permanently.

New research to be revealed at a conference of some of the world's top neuroscientists in Cairns today has found booze does not kill off brain cells as previously thought.

Queensland Brain Institute director Professor Perry Bartlett said there was no evidence the consumption of alcohol led directly to the death of brain cells.

Some of the best studies show that a bottle of wine a night can actually reduce the risk of dementia in old age, Professor Bartlett said.

In moderation, alcohol has positive benefits for blood vessel health.

Research by Professor Bartlett and his team has found we all have an inbuilt repair kit replenishing the more than 100 billion cells – or neurons – in our brain."

It feels like weeks ago now ... and I think we all miss the Holidays already. One of our Holiday traditions is a gingerbread scene ... but not your typical house and frosting combo. Last year it is was the S.S. Diabetes; a gingerbread, pirate ship theme. Awesome, yes. This year, there was no question about it, the theme was GAMCRO, or Gingerbreads of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Raincity Original.

It turned out to be a battle scene of epic proportions.

Yes, that is gingerbread Yoda, on a bike, wielding his saber ...

... vs. gingerbread Darth Vader, on a bike, wielding his saber ...

The battle heated up fast. Not sure who killed this gingerbread Moose, but it was collateral damage ... yet still remained delicious.

And, at some point, things started to get WEIRD behind the clubhouse (Not sure what is going on here)

A lot of smarties were spilled in this epic battle ... it was delightful.

The gingerbread was delicious, and our Drink Toques were working their Holiday magic. Can't wait to see what we get up to next year ... GAMCRO!

Mental note : From now on, I will only drink beer made from melted Antarctic Ice. Wait wait, only 30 bottles were made?? Well that should last the weekend ... They are $800 per bottle!? Ummmm ... can I have a sip of yours? Who are you talking too right now?

Beer Popsicles (via thekitchn.com)

It's hot outside, and you know what that means ... beer popsicles! Haven't made beer popsicles before? That's okay, they're kinda easy.

Do you have a favourite beer popsicle recipe? There's lots of recipes out there, but the current ones all follow fairly similar recipe.

The following recipe is via thekitchn.com , ENJOY!

Ingredients
6 Limes
6 teaspoons of Light Agave Nectar
6 cans of beer (we used Tecate)

Materials
6 wooden skewers, sticks or plastic utensils
1 bowl for each can of beer
6 plastic party cups (optional)

Instructions

1. Open Cans: There are two methods to making these popsicles. The first is made in the can where you'll have to remove some of the beer before adding in the extras (see: drink). You'll want to "remove" roughly 1/4 of the can so it doesn't expand into a beer volcano in your freezer (just trust us on this one). The other method is to pour the entire contents of the can into a plastic party cup. You'll be able to freeze the entire beer, but it will require buying said cups, so the choice is up to you. Either way, open your cans.

2. Add In Agave & Lime: When adding in the lime, we found it just as easy to juice the lime directly over the can or cup (instead of into a bowl first). Make sure your limes have been softened a little first by rolling them on the counter or popping them in the microwave for 10 seconds. Stir the contents of the cup or can until mixed (15 seconds).

3.Add Sticks: You can use almost anything in the kitchen as a stick if you don't want to purchase popsicle sticks (we used plastic silverware and bamboo skewers). Just be aware that anything wooden inserted into the mix should be moistened first. Either a quick dip in the beer or with water, this is a step that can't be skipped. If you do, your mixture will bubble and foam for roughly 20 minutes. There's a good chance (like it did in our kitchen) that it will bubble right over the edge of your container and escape to the counter and potentially floor. Note: Check the photo above for tips on inserting your stick through the pop tab to hold it in place)

4.Time To Freeze: The length of time each popsicle will take to freeze is determined by two things. The first being your freezer's temperature and the other is how well your mix was, well... mixed, so make sure all the agave and lime is combined! We placed each can or cup in a small bowl to catch any escaping juices and although this is an optional step, we highly suggest it for your first few attempts. Allow to freeze solid for 3-4 hours or overnight.

5.Removal: If you used the party cup method, removing the pop from the can is as simple as giving it a twist and it should pop right out. If you used the can, here's what we suggest. Use a serrated knife to cut off the bottom and slide the pop out of the can. We don't like the idea of keeping the pop in the can for fear of cutting ourselves, so if you're worried about drips, use a small plastic bowl on the bottom to catch the juices.

6. Enjoy! You can eat them just as they are or even sprinkle them with a little salt first. Make sure to share with the neighbors for an extra dose of friendliness.

Perhaps. There has been a beer war brewing in Europe for the last little while. It involves beer, and having fun trying to create the 'world's strongest beer'. Is it 'drinkable'? Not important.

"A Dutch brewer [Almere-based brewery, 't Koelschip (The Refrigerated Ship)] with a penchant for competition has laid claim to creating the world's strongest brew: a beer that is some 60 per cent alcohol by volume."(1)

Ummmm, that's pretty serious even for hard alcohol! And, The Refrigerated Ship is a fantastic name for a brewery, so they get points for that, but ...
Who's their competition? None other than the Scottish brewery, and marketing geniuses, Brew Dog, who are selling their 55% alcohol by volume in these perfectly sized, dead squirrels:

I love cake. Love it. Sometimes, I like to make a rocketship cake or something, not even for my birthday, just for fun. Did we ever post the Gingerbread Pirate ship? It was awesome. Anyways, I recently came across the following picture, and it is my new mission in life is to make this cake, The Stubby Cake!

How to make The Stubby Cake :

1. Print out the pattern above(email us for the PDF, info@drinktoque.com)
2. Make cake dough.
3. Pour into pan.
4. Bake cake.
5. Wait for cake to cool. Apply pattern print out to top of cooled cake. Cut around pattern.
6. Ice (like, icing sugar, not BrosIcingBros ... or maybe this the perfect time for that? Discuss ...).
7. Invite friends over.
8. Eat.

Bros Icing Bros? When I heard from a friend that he had been 'iced' at a 10am, weekday work meeting ... by a perfect stranger, I knew this epic game of college-style pranks had gone mainstream ... and something you obviously need to know about.

It is essentially a drinking game, of sorts, that can happen anywhere, anytime. Prepare to get 'ICED'!

How to 'ice' someone:

Step 1 - Buy Smirnoff Ice

Step 2 - Choose your target. Your best friend, your friend's friend, your Dad, the mailman, your boss. Whomever really. But, pick someone who you would actually get some enjoyment out of forcing to drink an Ice.

Step 3 - Plan your delivery method and commit. It is supposed to be a surprise, so get creative here. The more creative, the better. Or, straight up spontaneous style. Whatever. Getting Iced is a bit of a freestyle burn.

Step 4 - Execute the plan. No turning back now. If you don't Ice them, they will Ice you.

What to do if you get 'Iced' :

Reasons why I don't think you should mind getting iced :

1. Free drinking. The guy who can never find his wallet at the pub/bar suddenly has booze for you. He thinks he is burning you. But, I think you're just getting paid back for all the free drinks you have bought him.

2. Legitimizes drinking at random times and places throughout the day. The mid-week boardroom will never be the same!

3. The point of the game is that Smirnoff Ice 'tastes so bad', that's the burn of it all, but I am also willing to bet many of these Icing Bros actually use Ice as morning drinks in the case of being irresponsible the night before. ie. They actually make good hangover drinks, and so it is no big deal. It's fun really.

How to get 'Iced' :

1. Find yourself a twentysomething aged person, and consistently tell them how much you hate Smirnoff Ice, and if you ever get 'iced', you might freak out. Adults just out of college have an insatiable appetite to ice people.

2. Get on Twitter and find other people that are tweeting about their Icing escapades (ex. search #brosicingbros). Lay claim to some really great Icing tales. Someone will want to Ice you back.

3. Pay someone to ice you, and act like you hate it, and say something like, "Gee, I hope I don't get iced again". Then, your friends will be sure to burn you again and again.

The future of Icing :

I would like to see Bros Icing Bros to expand to all sexes, and all drinks. That way, our whole lives essentially turn into one gigantic, potential drinking game. Can that be so wrong?

7-Eleven, the third-largest beer retailer in the U.S., is "rolling out a store-brand beer billed as a premium brew at a budget price."

7-Eleven beer, really? Beer is generally not sold in 7-Elevens across Canada, so this is an especially odd idea to me, but "Game Day performed well in taste tests". "Exceptional quality at a value price."

"Game Day beer follows the introduction of the Yosemite Road private-label wines in 7-Elevens last year ... the launch has gone well, with the wines holding the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the chain's wine sales."

However, "This is 7-Eleven's second attempt at beer. In 2003, they introduced Santiago, meant to compete with imports like Corona, but ultimately unable to gain much of a foothold."

Nonetheless, "This time around, chain officials expect their focus on high value in a down economy will work."

So, people already buy beer at 7-Eleven in the US anyways. And, getting your 'Game Day' beer at a good price might help promote your tailgating. That seems like a good idea. And, Game Day is a catchy or, at least, very recognizable, brand name. But, I don't know if I am onboard per say. Will you try it US fans? Are people going to drop the PBR, and head for the Game Day instead?

Do you drink Great Western Beer and can you confirm this? Is this credible bar-talk or free brand imagery? Wouldn't this count for all the wheat and stuff out that way? And, if potassium is the key, then monkeys know best, as bananas have more potassium than anything, or was it potatoes?

Anyways, you get the picture, I keep imagining people approaching others in a bar with the line, 'Hi there, can I buy you a potato?'. (Hmmm, DrinkToques for potatoes!!!)
