Strong Tower Sports Academy Lineman Challenge Preview

This Tuesday (June 18th) at Lahser High School. Strong Towers Sports Academy will be hosting the Lineman Challenge which will be focusing on competition, evaluations, and seminars. Not only will there be nonstop action among the participants but also seminar's in which athletes and parents will be able to get a better understanding of the positions they play and information on the recruiting process, which would otherwise come at an expense or through connections.

College's such as: Central Michigan, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan, Ferris State, Wayne State, Northwood, Saginaw Valley State, Michigan Tech, and Youngstown State are signed up to provide evaluations and instructional to the participants.

There are limited spots for Lineman Challenge and door sign-ups are welcome tomorrow morning between 7 and 9 A.M.

There are 35-40 signed up lineman.

Lawrence Marshall says Malik McDowell to Southfield would be "epic"; further intensify week one matchup with Cass Tech

As if defensive end Malik McDowell didn’t have enough hype surrounding him with multiple BCS offers, it was recently announced that he was not going to be attending Detroit Loyola next year.

            The number 23 prospect in the nation in 2014 has been rumored to be interested in teaming up with fellow defensive lineman Lawrence Marshall at Southfield for their senior seasons. No word has come out yet as to where McDowell will be transferring to.
            But if it is indeed Southfield, every team better watch out for what would be arguably one of the best defensive lines in the nation.
            Marshall knows nothing is decided yet, but admits it would be cool for the two to team up.
            “It would be crazy; it would be epic if we get Malik McDowell. We’d have a great defensive line.”
            Much like Shane Morris of the 2013 class, Marshall is active in the recruiting of prospects to Michigan.
            “I talk to Malik McDowell the most. I tell him ‘Hey, if you want to go to the best school, go to Michigan.’ We have the best class right now.”
            Marshall has talked with Da’Shawn Hand (Woodbridge, Va/defensive end), the number one prospect in the country according to Rivals about attending Michigan and making the defensive line the most feared d-line in the country.

Marshall credited the Michigan coaches to his commitment to Michigan.

“Coach Mattison and Coach Hoke are great coaches on a great staff. Michigan is a great school.”

Dream Matchup

            Southfield opens the season up at the 2013 Prep Kickoff Classic on Fri. Aug. 30 in the primetime matchup against Cass Tech.
            Before the rumors of McDowell to Southfield, the rivalry game was a sure must-see. But if McDowell decides to enroll at Southfield, the game would be an instant-classic marking the debut of the most dynamic defensive line in the state’s recent memory.
            With David Dawson and Dennis Finley moving on to the next level, Cass Tech turns to youth to replace the future Wolverine and Spartan respectively.
            Cass Tech defensive coordinator Jermaine Crowell said one new face in particular will fill the void on the Technician O-line.
            “We’re just going to plug some guys in there. Michael Onwenu, he’s a young guy (2016).”
            With the possibility of the Marshall and McDowell duo, Crowell knows it’s a tall order to stop both of them.
            “To be honest with you, dealing with Malik and Marshall, they are the top two defensive linemen in the state. I don’t think you can really stop them, you really need to just try to contain them and focus. We are going to do what we do no matter who we line up against.”

Potent offense

            With all of the McDowell and Marshall talk, Cass Tech’s potent offense is not something to take lightly. Jayru Campbell returns for his junior season after starting as a freshman and sophomore in back-to-back state championships.
            Crowell is excited for the matchups when his team is on offense. He knows that even if his o-line does their job, the rest of the offense must follow suit.
            “We’re going to give Mikey [Weber] and Gary Hosey the ball. And Jayru [Campbell] is going to take a few shots.”
            With the possibility of McDowell enrolling at Southfield, that just gives Cass Tech one more thing to prepare for. Head coach Thomas Wilcher and Cass Tech have to start their title defense early, in the Southfield matchup.
            “He [Thomas Wilcher] has been doing this for 20+ years and when a coach does it for that long you get good. We [Cass Tech coaches] follow his lead,” Crowell said.

Marshon Lattimore, "It's not just about Ohio State"

            What do Donte Witner, Ted Ginn Jr., and Troy Smith have in common? They each played football for Glenville High School in Cleveland, gone on to play for Ohio State, and eventually play in the NFL.
            Glenville has been a premier football warehouse for Ohio State. Whitner, Ginn Jr. and the 2006 Heisman trophy winner, Smith are among the 18 players that have been a part of the Glenville to Ohio State pipeline since 2002.
            Glenville has sent only five to the state of Michigan since 2002; two to the University of Michigan (Frank Clark in 2011 and Willie Henry in 2012) and one to Eastern Michigan (Doniel Gabriell in 2010).
            Marshon Lattimore is the next in a long line of highly touted prospects from Glenville and holds an Ohio State offer as well as from Alabama, Oregon, USC, and Michigan.
            “The atmosphere and coaches are great at Ohio State.”
            Lattimore is 2014’s number two ranked defensive back in the country (according to rivals) and is still undeclared. Though most experts believe Ohio State is the favorite right now, Lattimore squashed the rumors.
            “It's not just Ohio State. I’m interested in everybody right now, everybody that I have offers from.”
            The 2013 Buckeyes will have four former Glenville players on the team. Lattimore spoke highly of the coaches and facilities at Ohio State.
            “The atmosphere and coaches at Ohio State are great.”
            Glenville’s only two players to play for Michigan in the past ten years both are currently on the team. Clark will be a junior and Henry a redshirt freshman in 2013. Lattimore said he liked that there are former teammates at Michigan. He has kept in touch with them since their departure from Glenville.
            Lattimore also values the traditions and coaching staff at Michigan.

“I like the tradition of Michigan and their coaches.”

Chris Pearson - "My toughest challenge is to prove to everyone I can play this game. I haven't been playing football for very long, but the people that have played against me know when I put the pads on and your lined up against me, it's all business."

Chris Pearson - "Being able to do so well in a short period of time. I think I improve every time I step on the field and for a person to do as well as I have in football in a short period of time is a huge accomplishment."

#1 Most Memorable Game:

Previous homecoming game against Canton. Although we fell by one point after failing to convert a two point conversion following a last second Hail Mary, our squad fought hard on both ends of the ball and did not back down from any challenges Canton gave us. We also were huge under dogs in this game.

Pre-game Traditions:

Every game we pray together which is led by our quarterback Kyle Riley.

Post-game Traditions:

After the game we jog to the end zone after shaking the opponents hand. If we get the win, we proudly raise our helmets in the air while breaking it down. Personally, I thank God after every game for giving me the opportunity to get better and blessing me with the ability to perform.

Athlete you try building your game around:

Notre Dame's kicker and punter, Kyle Brindza, is my ultimate role model. Throughout his entire life, Kyle faced obstacles which had the potential to prevent any athletic career he dreamed of. Kyle did not only overcome those obstacles to be able to pursue his dream, he became the best at what he does through hard work, dedication, and most importantly, God and Christ. Kyle has helped me tremendously through private training to become a better kicker and punter.

Major in Biology with many pre med courses. I aspire to go to graduate school and become a pediatric generalist or pediatric cardiologist.

Greatest High School Achievement:

My greatest high school achievement was receiving the coaches award at the two day Kornblue Kicking camp at the University of Michigan. How much better of a kicker and punter Coach Brandon Kornblue and the remainder of Kornblue Kicking staff, including Brindza, have made me is unbelievable, literally.

Offseason Goal (s):

I have achieved many of my goals already. I have excelled as a kicker and punter during the offseason and keep on moving forward. By the end of the summer I would like to be a top 15 prospect for both punting and kicking on Kornblue Kicking's Fab 50 list. I would also like to have offers from schools that I have interest in playing for.

How I play the game:

I simply take in all the learning I can and work hard with it to improve my skill. I also study many of the mechanics of kicking and punting so I can be more knowledgeable of the position and use that knowledge to be smart when it comes to deciding when to stop kicking and punting and proper recovery.

The D Zone - How has recruiting been going so far for you this season?

Alejandro Castillo - "The recruiting process is not at the level I anticipate it to be at come the end I August. Although I have received letters from a few Division 2 and 3 schools, I have not received any schools I have interest or potential interest in. I am attending several college specialist camps this summer and hope for the recruiting process to accelerate following my attendance at these camps."

What has been your biggest challenge in High School football so far?

Alejandro Castillo - "Fitting in. I am the first kicker and punter of my kind that my team has had. What I have to do to become better are all foreign to the players and coaches. Many people don't understand, therefore sometimes think I do not work as hard or as much as they do."

What has been the most memorable part of high school football?

Alejandro Castillo - "Attending Kornblue Kicking camps. I have attended all four types of Kornblue camps (private lessons, college camps, fab 50 camps and the national kicking challenge). I see coach Kornblue twice a month on average. I give all the credit to God, Coach Brandon Kornblue, and the rest of the Kornblue Kicking staff for the kicker and punter I am today. Coach Kornblue runs the best kicking camps in the country, it is as simple as that."

What have you been doing since football season ended?

Alejandro Castillo - "Everyday I do cross fit training as well as yoga. Yoga has helped me increase my flexibility and balance which has made me a better kicker. During the winter I went to Total Sports Wixom to kick on turf, indoors, 5 times a week. I did several sessions in the snow and other poor weather conditions to prepare myself for any game situation possible. Now I continue to attend Kornblue camps and college camps. Also, I train with specialists from the Plymoth Canton Educational Park."

What are keys to performing at your positions?

Alejandro Castillo - "Dedication, dedication, dedication. There are so many mechanics to kicking and punting that there is always room to prove. Having the desire to be better is the most important thing with kicking and punting. Kickers and punters cannot settle for anything no matter what. This means going to camps, doing kicking and punting related drills everyday, working out and analyzing film. Being mentally strong is another thing. Kicking and punting is very mental, which means there is no room to have a negative attitude when kicking and punting."

What are some personal goals you have set for this upcoming season?

Alejandro Castillo - "Most importantly, I want to better my team. Awards and being recognized are great but it is about the team, the team, the team."

If a college coach was interested in having you play on his team and asked you why he should accept you on his team, what would you tell him?

Alejandro Castillo - "I do not only work my tail off to do everything a coach wants from me, but I will exceed his wishes. I work harder than any other player and am respectful."

Which game stands out the most to you in the 2013 season?

Alejandro Castillo - "To me, no game is more important than another. Every game we improve and learn whether we win or lose, and that is what is necessary to become champions. I expect my team to leave everything on the field and not play for themselves, but for the guys lined up next to them."

Who is the best player you lined up against on the field?

Alejandro Castillo - "The best player I lined up against was ex Plymouth High School kicker/punter and current Nevada commit Brenton Zuzo. Zuzo was a top punter and kicker in the nation and it was challenging to look like the better kicker while competing against a player like him. Brent worked hard to be where he is and has inspired me to do the same."

Western Michigan's Fleck overcomes recruiting challenges

There’s no taller task in college football than a new head coach having to put together a coaching staff and recruiting class in less than four weeks.

First year Western Michigan head coach P.J. Fleck has done just that.

After being hired on December 17, Fleck finished the 2012 season as the wide receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before coming to Kalamazoo in the first week of January.

“A lot of people would have looked at it [being named head coach in December] as an excuse. I looked at it as a wonderful challenge,” Fleck said.

“We got a chance to be able to take kids that were passed up at this time last year. They had phenomenal senior years and they’ve developed and needed that extra year. Actually I think we stole some kids and Cam Thomas is one of them,” Fleck said of his first recruiting class.

With Alex Carder’s departure to the NFL, a void is being left open at quarterback. Fleck said that he expects a good quarterback competition this summer between two guys: Senior Tyler Van Tubbergen and the true freshman Thomas.

“Tyler Van Tubbergen has really set himself apart, but I think that Cam will come in and have an opportunity to show that he can do just as well.”

Thomas, who started three seasons for South Lyon East will come in looking to earn playing time.

Fleck wouldn’t be surprised if Thomas takes the starting quarterback job from the front-runner Van Tubbergen in the fall.

“We’ll see. He’s got to compete for a role.”

Thomas passed for 1,923 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2012 as a senior and lead South Lyon East to the playoffs for the first time in school history. Fleck admired Thomas’ toughness he gained from playing hockey in high school.

“Any quarterback that I recruit that’s a hockey player, I’m all in. We have a wonderful hockey program at Western Michigan. He’s a tough, tough, tough kid. He has a wonderful arm and family. He’s a high character kid that I think Western Michigan is going to be very proud of,” Fleck said of Thomas.

Fleck also stated that Thomas will not play for Andy Murray and the hockey team.

Growing up in Kaneville, Illinois, Fleck lettered in football, basketball, and track. He lead his football team to back-to-back state championships in 1997 and 1998. He set a state record with 95 catches for 1,598 yards, and 16 touchdowns as a senior earning him a scholarship at Northern Illinois.

At NIU, Fleck was named captain twice after being voted by his teammates. He was also a second team Academic All-American as a senior and owns Northern Illinois’s school record for most punt returns (87) and is second in punt return yards (716). Fleck is also third in career receptions with 179 and fourth with receiving yards with 2,162.

Fleck signed with the San Francisco 49’ers after going undrafted in the 2004 NFL Draft. After two seasons of being primarily on the practice squad, the 49’ers released him.

Jim Tressel hired Fleck as an offensive graduate assistant in 2006 and he worked with tight ends. The next year, NIU head coach Joe Novak hired Fleck as receivers coach before being retained by Jerry Kill.

After a quick two year stint as the receivers coach with Rutgers in 2010 and 11, Fleck was hired as the offensive coordinator for Northern Illinois.

One day later, he resigned to take the receivers coaching job with Tampa Bay. After a season in the NFL, Fleck became the youngest in the Football Subdivision (FBS) and the first coach of the FBS to be born in the 1980’s.

Western Michigan opens their season August 30 at Michigan State.

Sound Mind Sound Body camp teaches players about safety; Mark Dantonio approves

Many football camps across the country today focus solely on speed and strength. Sound Mind Sound Body focuses on the mental aspect of the game.

Founded in 2005, SMSB teaches players about parts of being a college athlete that aren’t taught anywhere else. Co-founder and Vice President of SMSB Curtis Blackwell made this year’s camp more about teaching players how to be safer and more aware of the dangers in the game of football.

“This year’s academy will focus on player safety and concussion awareness. This is not just about football. It’s really important for our youth to have a Sound Mind and a Sound Body,” Blackwell said.

Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio was pleased with the leaps technology has made, making concussions less of a problem than they were 10 years ago.

“Baselines are established in every [football] program now and they give you an indication of what’s wrong.”

With the changes made over the past five years, players are protected more. Quarterbacks are being protected on the field now more than ever. Rules have also outlawed any sort helmet to helmet hits.

“Tackling is not a science, it’s an art,” Dantonio said. “Every tackle is going to be different.”

The goal of making the rule changes benefiting the offensive player are to protect them from dangerous hits.

Dantonio noted that the risk of playing football isn’t always worth it.

“There are risks involved. It’s a great game and you can learn a lot about how to handle yourself in difficult and pressure situations throughout your life,” Dantonio said.

This year’s camp is being hosted by Southfield High School ranging from Thursday to Saturday.

Sound Mind Sound Body Preview

The Sound Mind Sound Body is coming to Southfield High School this Friday and Saturday. The premier camp in the state of Michigan for football, will remain atop the food chain for the 2013 offseason. The SMSB will feature mostly all of Michigan's top prospects and even top players from throughout the County, including an LSU commit from the SEC. Michigan will represented by 2 major commits as well - Damon Webb (Cass Tech / Ohio State) and Lawrence Marshall (Southfield / Michigan). The list of players is primarily high school players instate, which it should be. There are several players with offers, near offers, borderline players, and players who are looking to get their names out to the hundred of college coaches and media members. To show you how major the camp is, 1st year head coach - PJ Fleck of Western Michigan who has made instate recruiting a priority and outdone his 4 other instate schools for getting commits will be on hand, plus Dan Enos - Central Michigan's head coach who also has infused the talent rich state into Chippewa's since taking over the position, will be in attendance too. University of Michigan's head coach Brady Hoke, Ohio State's head coach Urban Meyer, Michigan State's head coach Mark Dantonio, and a few other unconfirmed head coaches will also be in attendance, checking out the 2015, 2016, 2017 prospects, and maybe even looking for some prospects in the Class of 2014 whom they overlooked. Also addressing the attendee's will be Ferris State Head Coach, Tony Annese who is entering his 2nd season in Big Rapids. In his debut season in the Division II's, GLIAC which is what we compare to the SEC of the D1 football, Annese led the Ferris State Bulldogs to a 7-4 record and brought in one of the best signing day classes in all of Division II for the Class of 2013. Annese is the only college football coach to attend every single instate one day camp as well, so he'll be sure to get closer looks at certain players and add new players to his board.

Detroit City FC Shuts out Erie Admirals 3-0

Detroit, MI -- Detroit City FC came into this Sunday's game against Erie having a perfect 4-0 record, while Erie came in with a 2-0-2 record. After Sunday's matchup, there would likely be one undefeated team remaining in the Great Lakes Division.

To start the match, uncharacteristically the Le Rouge struggled to gather rhythm and scoring chances. Erie who started off strong, stopping any chance of DCFC starting an attack. Erie who controlled the tempo in the early going, nearly went up 1-0 in the 11th minute. However, goalkeeper - Bret Mollon (Notre Dame Prep / Temple) who already posted a shutout in his Detroit City FC debut, straight up robbed Erie's Karl Jones of a sure goal. Following the scoring chance, the Le Rouge defense buckled down and Jones who caused problems early, didn't really receive much free space the remaining 80 minutes.

In the 23rd minute the burden was lifted when Zeke Harris (Carman-Ainsworth / Michigan) sent a beautiful through-ball over the Erie defenders and right on the foot of Zach Myers (Forest Hills Eastern / Saginaw Valley State) who simply slotted the ball to the left far post for what was an easy finish but showed excellent team work and execution on getting past Erie's defender Samuel Oki who is DCFC's version of captain - Josh Rogers (De La Salle / Michigan State). Myers the Division II player of the year, can hold his own with anyone in the league and the goal proved to be the ignition to the offensive pressure that DCFC would use for remainder of the game.

DCFC nearly had 2 more goals in the first half, both came from the left side of the defense, away from where Oki was defending. The first supreme chance was when Myers cut to the inside, dribbling his way around 2 defenders inside the 18 yard box but the Erie goalkeeper made a good save. The 2nd chance came in the 33rd minute, when Miche'le Lipari (De La Salle / Oakland) followed a similar path that Myers took the goal. Lipari's shot would hit the far right post and bounce the opposite side of the field, where it was cleared from any danger.

The score at halftime would be 1-0 but for once the opposing team would not be down for the count at halftime. However, any hope that Erie had of winning or drawing this game, quickly came to screeching halt in the 2nd half.

To start the half, DCFC opposed their will on Erie and began to control the tempo and send passes down the sidelines which obviously played into Detroit City FC's strength, speed! In the 53rd minute, which is around the time the Le Rouge tend to strike first in the 2nd half, Lucas Diener (Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest / Oakland) put a ball right into the 6 yard box that Zeke Harris and the Erie goalkeeper reached up for, but Harris got the better positioning and to the ball first. Harris would put his head on the ball and send it to to the back of the net, leaving behind a screaming crowd and a screaming goalkeeper at the referee, who felt it was interference. But the referee never wavered and the Le Rouge lead was now at 2-0.

As the half wore on the chances came for both teams. Unlike 2 weeks ago Zanesville FC, where Mollon didn't need to save one shot, he would need to come up with 2 major saves in the 2nd half, which not only kept the lead but paced for his 2nd shutout wearing Rouge.

In the 78th minute with the win well within reach, the Le Rouge again added an insurance goal. Zach Schewee (Stoney Creek / Bowling Green State) who has been close to scoring 5+ goal this year but has 0 goals to show for it, put a shot on goal, the rebound bounced towards the middle of the field but inside the 6 yard box. A few steps away from the rebound was Lachlan Savage (Salem / Saginaw Valley State) who calmly tapped in the rebound for the 3-0 lead.

Erie had one chance to break the shutout but the shot went wide and high and into Grand River Road, barely putting a scare on the Le Rouge faithful.

With the win the Le Rouge now are 5-0 for the season and have 15 points. The Le Rouge are tied with Buffalo with 15 points but Buffalo has played one more game and came away with a loss. The Le Rouge control their own destiny as they head down a stretch of 5 out of 7 divisional games away from Detroit.

This Friday, Detroit City FC will host Zanesville FC after a complete dominant win two weeks ago, DCFC will aim to carry over where they left off.

Detroit City FC is one of three teams in the NPSL which have a perfect record, the other two are Quad City and New York Red Bulls.

DCFC leads the Great Lakes Division with 16 goals and the highest goal differential at +13. The +13 goal differential is tied for 2nd in the whole NPSL with Sonoma County Sol and behind FC Hasental +22, FC Hasental leads the league with 36 goals scored in 10 games.

Elite Skill Camp Hosted by Quarterback University at Albion College

My most memorable game was this past year's Prep Bowl championship against Notre Dame Prep, our school's biggest rival. We had lost to them earlier in the regular season and we wanted to redeem ourselves.

Pre-game Traditions:

My pre-game ritual includes getting suited up before everyone else. I always tape up my wrists and ankles, I make sure that everything fits just right. Cleats tied tight, helmet is snug and secure, and my visor is clear and ready to go. Before I leave the locker room, I say a prayer for protection for myself and my teammates.

Post-game Traditions:

As a team, win or lose, we always sing our fight song to our fans. We thank them for coming out and supporting the program. We pray as a team with our cheerleaders and usually have our school's chaplain, Fr. Lobert there to lead the prayer thanking our Lord for the opportunity to compete and to give Him the glory. After, my family and I go out to eat and either celebrate the win or discuss what went wrong and how I can improve for the next game.

Athlete you try building your game around:

Tim Tebow is definitely someone whom I look up to as a player and a person because of his hard work and dedication to everything he does. His integrity on and off the field is an inspiration to me. He has not compromised his beliefs and values in order to conform.
Ray Lewis is another athlete that I admire, not only for his skill and ability, but also his intensity and enthusiasm for the game. He is a dedicated team player and a leader on the field.

The most memorable game was against Canton last season at our homecoming. We lost on a two point conversion it was heart breaking. But I played the best game of the season against Canton.

Before every game I sit in the locker room for 30 minutes and have my headphones in and listen to my favorite song. Then I always get ready the same way for every game, home and away.

Post-game Traditions:

After every game win or loss I go and get ice from the trainer and then sit by my locker and think what I did good for my team and the things I could have done better.

Athlete you try building your game around:

The athlete I try to base my game on is Jake Long. We play two different position on the line but I try and play like him. Being aggressive and always protecting my quarterback to the limits.

My major is education so that I can teach and some day to become a high school football coach.

My most memorable game was my freshman year against Wayne Memorial. I remember this game so much because it was one of my best career games. I remember at the beginning of the game one of my teammates was timid and afraid because they had DL that were much bigger than our guys, but we battled it out as a unit.

I listen to How Bad Do You Want It? With Giavanni Ruffin and Eric Thomas, the I am a Champion speech, and then anything Ray Lewis. I eat right after school. The biggest tradition has to be pre game saying the Day By Day prayer as a team.

Post-game Traditions:

After a win me and my teammates play music in the locker room. After that, because I always have had games on Thursdays, I have never had an opportunity to do anything special other than go home and do homework.

I want my work ethic to be like Giavanni Ruffin, my intensity to be like Lawrence Taylor, and the heart of Ray Lewis. Of course I'd love to play as long as Jason Hanson.

Stats:

As an offensive linemen there aren't many statistics to be kept. Defensively, between JV and Freshman, I have approximately 5 sacks and 40 tackles.

I really like Ball State because my brother goes there. I have seen there team play and they have a lot of talent. Otherwise I am interested in wherever I could play.

I work hard. Every snap I'm in I put in maximum effort and I don't go easy. If I'm not in on a play and they need a guy to fill in somewhere, I will always jump right up.

How I play the game:

I'm smart on the field. Rather than just knowing the plays for my position I try to learn them for the whole line. I also try and ask my position coaches why I would change certain things in certain situations so I can learn more about the plays.

Tim Nehasil - "I have faced two injuries. I am now at full strength and the injuries no longer effect me. I put in the work while I'm hurt to try and make it back as soon as possible and I work hard in the off season to avoid any injuries."

Tim Nehasil - "Just being a team. The fact that I have brothers that always have my back on and off the field. I will never forget how much this team means to me and I will always have their backs like they have mine."

Matt Sokol of Rochester Adams Commits to Michigan State

Earlier in May the Michigan State Spartans received great news that Rochester Adams' Matt Sokol would pledge to the Spartans. Until that point the Spartans weren't able to land an instate prospect after Drake Harris decommitted and Lawrence Marshall gave his word to Michigan. The commitment of Sokol is a important piece for the Spartans since they haven't been able to a land an instate commit since Deon Drake and Byron Bullough committed, months ago. Sokol is considered a work in progress by recruiters due to the fact that Sokol has excelled at playing quarterback in an option based offense at Rochester Adams High School. Many players who have dedicated at excelling at a new positions and we expect that to be the same for Sokol, once he arrives in East Lansing.

You will be able to see Sokol in the first week of the season on Saturday when they play a non division, rivals, Clarkston at Ford Field in Detroit.

Detroit City FC Defeats FC Sparta 4-1

Detroit, MI -- On a rainy Friday night in Detroit the stars of Detroit City FC Le Rouge shined through the dark skies, smoke filled supporter section, and a yellow card filled game. Coming into this week's match, DCFC already had the upper hand on Sparta. In the first week of the season, the Le Rouge crushed Sparta 5-1. As for Sparta they were coming off yet another impressive win over AFC Cleveland, a team whom Detroit City FC defeated 2-1 for their win all time over the bitter Rust Belt rivals just two weeks earlier. As for Detroit City FC they put on a clinic in their previous game over Zanesville, shutting outs the newbie's 2-0 but not allowing a shot on goal, the whole entire game.

This weeks game was met with rain but unlike Detroit Tigers where the game is delayed or postponed for some rain, Sparta began with the kickoff and we were on our way, like it was just another soccer game. Behind another amped up supporter section, the Le Rouge carried out an offensive attack that had Zach Myers (Forest Hills Eastern) with a near goal but it would be nought. A few minutes later, Adam Bedell (Churchill) would launch a throw in at that Kevin Taylor (Pioneer Soccer Head Coach / University of Michigan) would nearly score off a header but the rebound came right back at his foot. From there, Taylor would drill in the game's first goal with just 4 minutes into the game. Setting off numerous smoke bombs and getting the crowd that much more fired up!

Sparta wouldn't sit back though, following the goa,l the Sparta team stayed in the Detroit City FC zone but Josh Rogers (De La Salle) would clear the zone and things would go back to DCFC controlling the tempo for seemingly the remainder of the game.

Following a corner kick, Sparta goalkeeper, Adrian Motta (Churchill) would collect the ball but would push a DCFC player who was near the loose ball. After being approached and spoke to Motta would shove the DCFC player down and force a penalty kick. Kevin Taylor would be more than happy to bury the PK in the 27th minute. Detroit City FC's lead now stood at 2-0 and there were no signs of slowing down either.

A few minutes later, Taylor delivered a perfect through ball to Miche'le Lipari (De La Salle) who easily placed the ball into the back of the net. In the 32nd minute the lead was now at 3-0 Detroit City.

At halftime, which came after like 5-6 minutes of stoppage time, Adam Bedell would injure his finger right before the referee blew his whistle, which forced Bedell to leave the game. Detroit City FC would go into the break 3-0 and a few minutes later, the sun shined on Cass Tech's pitch, opening a massive rainbow over Downtown Detroit and it's skyline.

Minutes into the 2nd half, Lipari again approached goal via a through ball but would be unable to slide the ball past Motta.

Detroit City FC didn't really need much more cushion, a 3 goal lead in soccer is as good as a 3 touchdown lead in the 4th quarter but with heavy pressure, DCFC would score the 4th goal of the game. After a shot on goal, Motta would allow a rebound and 2-3 rebounds later, Kevin Taylor poked in the goal just feet away from the goal line. Taylor would pick up the hat trick, which is the first hat trick in Detroit City FC history and was thanked by the crowd and one hat that was thrown on the field.

From here the intensity was picked up on loose balls and hard challenges. There were numerous yellow cards and even a red card, from 2 compiled yellow cards. DCFC would take out the big guns like: Taylor, Myers, and Zach Schewee (Stoney Creek) throughout the 2nd half.

Sparta again would break the shutout, late in the game vs DCFC. In the first game Sparta scored in the 81st minute to snap the shutout. This week a penalty kick by Gabriel Poulino also in the 81st minute would keep Jeremy Clark (Henry Ford II) away from his first shutout of the season.

Sparta would finish out strong being up an extra man but would be unable to crack the goal for the remainder of the game. With the win, Detroit City FC remains a perfect 4-0 and Sparta falls to 2-3.

Detroit City FC has the highest goal differential at +10 out of 6 teams in the Great Lakes Division while Sparta ranks last with -7.

The attendance was 1,095 rain soaked fans.

Dave Yarema Selected As Honorary Captain for 2013 East / West All Star Game

DETROIT (May 30, 2013) – Former Birmingham Brother Rice and Michigan State University quarterback Dave Yarema has been selected by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association (MHSFCA) as the Honorary Captain for the 33nd East-West All Star Game at Arend D. Lubbers Stadium on the campus of Grand Valley State University on Saturday, June 22 at 2 p.m.

“The Michigan High School Football Coaches Association is very pleased to announce that Dave Yarema will serve as the Honorary Captain for the 33rd East-West All Star Game” said Jim Sparks, MHSFCA East-West All Star Game chair and head football coach at Clawson High School. “Dave played in the All Star Game in 1982 and fondly remembers his MHSFCA All Star Game experiences. We expect that the players will enjoy the interaction with Dave on game-day as part of the experience at Grand Valley State University.”

At Brother Rice, Yarema led the Warriors to the 1980 state championship as an All-State quarterback. Dave then went on to play at Michigan State University and is ranked in the MSU all-time top 10 in passing attempts, completions, yardage and touchdowns. Currently, Dave is employed in the family business at Yarema Die and Engineering in Troy.

Yarema will participate in various activities on game day including addressing the teams prior to the game, representing the teams in the pre-game coin flip, joining the respective teams on the sideline during the game and taking part in media interviews including with FS Detroit on the live statewide broadcast.

The game features 88 of the best high school players – 44 on each team – in the state as selected by the 2013 East and West MHSFCA All Star Game coaches.

Detroit City FC Dominates Zanesville Athletic 2-0

Detroit, MI -- Detroit City FC would come into this week's match against Zanesville (East of Columbus, OH) with plenty of rest. The previous DCFC game featured the Le Rouge beating rivals AFC Cleveland 2-1 last Friday evening. After marching from Harry's Bar and Grill a few blocks down the road from Cass Tech High School, everyone was fired up and set a welcoming tone to Zanesville who got their first taste of Cass-Hole, the loudest and most intimidating crowd in all of the National Premier Soccer League.

To start off Detroit City would apply major pressure to create several scoring chances in the opening minutes, Adam Bedell (Churchill) would be tripped up in the box but there would be no foul called by the referee.

City would be able to get on the board first with a goal, 2 minutes later when Miche'le Lipari (De La Salle) found Kevin Taylor (Ann Arbor Pioneer Varsity Head Coach) off a corner kick, open for a header, that Taylor buried for his 2nd goal in two games for the Le Rouge.

From that point of the Le Rouge dominated Zanesville with possession and numerous scoring opportunities. With numerous fouls all over Zanesville's side of the field and relentless offensive attacks by Detroit City FC, it was just a matter of time before City scored their 2nd goal of the night. With all the chances DCFC had, the Le Rouge couldn't crack the Zanesville goalkeeper. In the 28th minute, Zanesville left back - Joel Craig would take out Zach Myers around midfield and then took down another Le Rouge player just outside the box, Craig would be given a Red Card for his out of hand playing style.

With the offensive chances the Le Rouge had, they wouldn't be able to finish but Zanesville had no offensive threat all game long, with the red card resulting in a 10 man team instead of 11, Zanesville would be forced to pick their opportunity to counter attack, but the team didn't really possess the drive to take advantage of Detroit's defenders advancing on the attack. Whenever Zanesville did try getting up field, the Le Rouge defense would suffocate them and either win loose balls or force easy turnovers to regain possession.

In their credit the Zanesville defense was very aggressive which resulted in several clean tackles and a lot of obvious fouls, some were called but some were not.

At halftime, Detroit City FC was up 1-0 but easily could of have been a 2 or 3 goal lead.

One strategy the Le Rouge coaches have used extremely well has been bringing Knox Cameron into the game at halftime or early in the 2nd half. Cameron easily creates chances by using his size to fend off defenders and spread the ball around.

Sergeant Scary and the Northern Guard Supports lead hundreds through the streets into Cass Tech.

In the 51st minute, Zanesville's defender would pass the ball back to the goalie who would fall down and pick up the loose ball, which resulted in an indirect free kick about 6 yards from the goal. An indirect kick requires 2 touches in order to have a goal. If a player kicks the ball and he was the only person who was to kick the ball, the goal would not count. After the referee spent a good minute keeping the Zanesville players on the goal-line, he would give out a yellow card to the goalkeeper who was being screened by Knox Cameron. Once play was resumed, the Le Rouge set piece would hit the wall of Zanesville defenders but Cameron was there for a rebounded goal.

In the final 40 minutes, plus an odd 4-5 minutes of stoppage time, the Le Rouge would bring in some new faces and easily hold onto a 2-0 victory. Detroit had several chances to score goals but it was mostly Zanesville playing defense the whole 2nd half and for that matter, the whole game.

Bret Mollon (Notre Dame Prep) made his DCFC debut and picked up the shutout. Mollon may of touched the ball 2-3 times the whole games from loose balls that were from overplayed long passes and didn't have to worry about any threats. Zanesville had zero shots on goal the whole game.

Detroit City FC now moves to 3-0 while Zanesville falls to 0-3. Detroit City FC will now welcome, Berkley's FC Sparta on Friday night, at Cass Tech. Detroit City FC defeated Sparta 5-1, two weeks ago. But it will be another intense game and provide the finest game atmosphere among anywhere in the Country.
