Detroit City FC Defeats AFC Cleveland 2-1

Detroit City FC would host AFC Cleveland in this highly anticipate matchup. Last season Cleveland was a perfect 2-0-2 against Detroit (2 wins and ties with no losses). Coming into this 2nd week matchup City had nothing in mind but pick up the win over their heated rivals.

Cleveland was 0-1 coming into this game, with their loss coming to Sparta last weekend and Detroit was 1-0. Le Rouge would defeat Sparta 5-1 last Sunday. Some media writers for the NPSL thought Detroit would run all over Cleveland tonight.

Cleveland started off strong with a quick goal in the 13th minute by none other than the Le Rouge killer himself, Vinnie Bell. Bell would force a turnover and evade Detroit City FC goalkeeper, Jeremy Clark (Henry Ford II / MSU) for the goal.

After constant pressure with Zach Myers (Forest Hills Eastern / SVSU) and Cyrus Saydee (Everett / MSU) the Cleveland defense was forced to be more aggressive which resulted in several chances and harder fouls.

In the 35th minute the strategy backfired following a foul on Wade Allen (Eisenhower / Oakland) which was in the box and resulted in a Penalty Kick. Unfortunately Allen was subbed out and in came Cameron Knox. Kevin Taylor (Pioneer Varsity Head Coach) would bury the penalty kick to tie the game in the 35th minute. (Video)

There would be chances for both sides, with a late push by each side but the score would remain 1-1 heading into the break.

Before everyone could "stand" in their seats, Detroit City FC would score the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute. Zeke Harris (Carman Ainsworth / Michigan) who has been on a tear to start the season, delivered another assist. This time his lob to Cameron Knox who would bury the ball off a header, gave Detroit City FC the 2-1 lead. (video)

As time clicked away both teams mounted attacks but Detroit City FC went to a more defensive approach with subs Miche'le Lipari (De La Salle / Oakland) for Spencer Thompson (De La Salle / MSU) and later in the half, the attacking and former Division 2 player of the year, Zach Myers for Adam Bedell (Churchill / Detroit Mercy). Detroit would do all they could do to keep it at 2-1 in the final 10 minutes.

AFC Cleveland would give Detroit all they had the final 10 minutes plus 3 minutes of stoppage time but the Le Rouge would hold strong and pick up the important win!

With the win the Le Rouge snap a 4 game winless streak against AFC Cleveland and now have 6 points to stand atop the leader board.

The Lakeshore game. Became nearly famous throughout the whole area after that game. Caught 10 passes for 158 yards and 2 TD's along with a 60 yard return and almost caught the game winning catch in the back of the endzone that was ruled incomplete.

Pre-game Traditions:

Ice bath the night before and stock up on water and pretzels Hang my jersey above my closet door. Then listen to music and get my mind right for the game.

Celebrate with my teammates and go to someones house or anything.

Jared Wangler of De La Salle Commits to Penn State

This past week the Penn State Nittany Lions secured one of their most important targets in the Class of 2014 in De La Salle (Warren) High School LB Jared Wangler. Before you ask, yes Jared is the son of former University of Michigan great - John Wangler. With that said, Jared has made his own legacy while playing linebacker at De La Salle and racking up several scholarship offers this Fall before ultimately deciding that Happy Valley was where he wanted to call home in a year from now. In Wangler's Junior season he would compile 76 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks and 1 interception in just 9 games played. Wangler actually started his first two seasons while staring at Shrine High School, before deciding to transfer to De La Salle last summer.

Jared Wangler - "It feels great, now all I'm focused on is the team and winning games next season."

Jared Wangler - "Coach Vanderlinden and Coach O'brien. They care about their players and not only want you to be a great football player but a great person as well."

Jared Wangler - "Getting to know great people."

The D Zone - What do the Penn State coaches like about the way you play?

Jared Wangler - "My versatility. They use a field linebacker that blitzes off the edge a lot and drops into coverage, but also makes plays in the box. They said I fit that position perfectly for them."

The D Zone - When the Penn State coaches found out you committed, how was their excitement level and what did they say to you?

Jared Wangler - "Once I told Coach O'brien that I was committing, he jumped out of his chair, shook my hand, and hugged me and said he was thrilled that I'm joining the family."

The D Zone - Are you familiar with any players on the Penn State roster?

Jared Wangler - "Anthony Zettel is my 2nd cousin. Also Allen Robinson, who played at Orchard Lake St, Mary's. I don't personally know him but I remember watching him play."

The D Zone - Have you had a chance to meet with anyone from the Class of 2014 and any players you are trying to pull with you to PSU?

Jared Wangler - "No, but I've been talking with some of the other 2014 commits."

Detroit City FC Invades FC Sparta 5-1

Berkley, MI -- Both teams entered Hurley Field at Anderson Middle School home of the Berkley High School Bears and temporarily home of the FC Sparta on a very high note. FC Sparta is a first year expansion team with owners being from Windsor, Canada. Sparta was actually coming in with a head full of steam with a win over Cleveland 1-0 on Friday night, Cleveland was the first place team in the Great Lakes Division last season. As for Detroit City FC Le Rouge it was awesome and exciting moment, with a majority of the team returning, sprinkled with a few new names and faces, the team was ready following a several month hiatus (since 2012 season ended).

As you expected, many Detroit City fans made the short drive from where ever they lived in Detroit and surrounding area's to the game. The attendance was announced 461- well over 400 fans were sporting the Le Rouge colors, for what seemed like another electric home game. One where the atmosphere rivals the loudest and relentless crowds in America and overseas too!

Knox immediately runs to the fans following his first goal of the evening.

Both team spent the first few minutes figuring out how to attack the opposition but following an offsides on Detroit FC, the Le Rouge seemed to have found their rhythm and solution for cracking the Sparta defense. The same defense that held 2012 league champs, Cleveland to a clean sheet just 2 days earlier. The Le Rouge had their first legit chance around the 20th minute, when Spencer Thompson (formerly: De La Salle) sent a shot far post that Sparta GK Adrian Motta (Churchill) leaped to his left to save Thompson's shot.

In the 22nd minute, following a pass to top of the 18 yard box from Cyrus Saydee, Latif Alashe (Northville) was left with a wide open shot and with no hesitation fired a shot at the near left low post for the goal.

From there the Le Rouge players were clicking, passes were on target, numerous chances, and the Le Rouge players created a lot of open space to work.

Minutes later following a superb cross over the defense, newcomer and Division 2 Player of the Year, Zach Myers (Forest Hills Eastern / Saginaw Valley State) ran down the pass and buried it in the 24th minute. Myers goal put DCFC up 2-0.

There were several chances in the half but the score would stick to 2-0 as the 45th minute and stoppage time hit.

11 minutes into the second half, Zach Myers (Forest Hills Eastern) approached the goal, Myers shot was initially saved but the rebound came back to Myers who easily tapped it in for his 2nd goal of the game and the teams 3rd goal of the game.

After being subbed in just minutes prior, Cameron Knox would get his first goal and receiving an assist from Zeke Harris (Carman Ainsworth). In the 59th minute the Le Rouge now led 4-0. All that was really left was finish with the shutout.

Following a failed back heel pass off a corner by a Le Rouge defender, FC Sparta's Matt Nedwicki (Divine Child) buried the miscue over top former Henry Ford II Goalie - Jeremy Clark. In the 81st minute the score was now 4-1 Detroit City FC.

From the 85th minute to stoppage time, the Le Rouge supporters did nothing but make noise and chant the quickest and loudest chants in their arsenal. Detroit City's Cameron Knox gave one last cheer in the 90+ minute, with his 2nd goal of the game after receiving a pass from Latif Alashe. In the 89th minute, Knox approached the goal nearly unmarked, rifled a shot past Motta that hit the post square on and came right back, only for Knox's second shot to hit the post but to the left on the near post, which resulted in a goal kick.

Detroit City FC at FC Sparta Roster Previews

Tonight at 7 PM at Hurley Field in Berkley, Detroit City FC will travel to the newly formed FC Sparta team out of Windsor, CAN - who set an expansion soccer team in Berkley, MI.

For FC Sparta they would travel to AFC Cleveland on Friday and defeat Cleveland 1-0 on an 89th minute goal by Jesus Ginez (Formerly of Lake Orion / Detroit Mercy). Detroit City FC was unable to hand their bitter rivals, Cleveland a loss last season (0-2-2).

The Detroit City FC Le Rouge have brought back several players and of course brought in some new faces, which we'll highlight below. As for Sparta, a lot of unknowns about who they are, who is on the team, etc. was unveiled on Friday and we've been able to highlight a few of their players. I am only listing the former Michigan HS players (this is what this blog covers!).

New Lothrop's (Mich.) Amari Coleman is a "Chip"

By writer Branden Hunter: New Lothrop (Mich.) athlete Amari Coleman became the sixth commit in Central Michigan's 2014 recruiting class Thursday afternoon. "It was just the right place for me," said Coleman. "They have a good program, and I'm excited to be a Chip."

The 5-11, 175-pounder will play cornerback at Central Michigan, but has the speed and skill set to play wide receiver and running back also. He rushed for 554 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior, averaging 22.2 yards per carry. Coleman also recorded six receiving touchdowns.

Coleman's only offer was from Central Michigan, but said Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, and Wisconsin all showed some interest in his services. Coleman also said his commitment to the Chippewas is solid.

"I called Coach Enos and told him I was going to be a Chip," Coleman said. He was really excited, and he told me he just wanted me to continue to work on my craft."

"I took a visit to the school, and really liked how they ran their program. It's not too far from my school, and I can't wait to get down there.

Coleman joins Macomb Dakota 2014 safety David Basirico, Flint Powers Catholic athlete Trent Grimes and Essexville Garber defensive end Alex Neering as the only players from Michigan in Central Michigan's 2014 class.

"I haven't talked to any other 2014 recruits, but I did play middle school football with Eric Cooper, so that'll help me when I get down there".

Cooper is a 2013 wide receiver commit from Flint Beecher.

Muskegon Mona Shores QB Tyree Jackson still has work to do

By writer Branden Hunter: The class of 2015 is loaded with quarterbacks in the state of Michigan. They are only sophomores, but Jayru Campbell (Cass Tech), Jake Johnson (DeWitt), Alex Malzone (Brother Rice), Tyree Jackson (Mona Shores), as well as some others, have already begun to receive some Division 1 interest.

Jackson doesn't attend a Michigan powerhouse like a Campbell, Johnson or Malzone, but high major programs have noticed what he can do on the field, and the Muskegon area is rich in football talent.

"No offers yet, but I have been to Toledo two times," said Jackson. "I've been to Central Michigan for their junior day, and they invited me to a one-day camp."

"Michigan and Michigan State coaches have been at the school to talk to me a lot too. Michigan State coaches came in last week to talk to me, and invited me to their one-day camp."

At 6-2, 178-pounds, Jackson still has time to grow into a Division 1 quarterback's body, and already has the skill set of one. He threw for 1,806 yards as a sophomore, and tossed 18 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. Although he is becoming a top prospect around the state, Jackson says he knows that there is still work to be done.

"It's an honor, but I still have a very long ways to go. I strive to be the best, and I have big goals for my team and I," Jackson said.

"Truthfully I don't think I have done anything yet. I'm still chasing other guys who have won state championships, and have taken their teams to the state playoffs."

Mona Shores went 4-5 last season, and Jackson said he wanted to improve on that record in 2013, as well as his personal attributes.

"You can always improve on your footwork, and reading and recognizing coverages faster. I'm gaining more strength at a good rate I think, but I want to be a solid 205-215 pounds by the time I graduate."

Jackson says he models his game after SuperBowl champions Aaron Rodgers of the Green Packers for his accuracy and knowledge of the game, and New Orleans Saints signal caller Drew Brees for his leadership qualities and fiery attitude.

For a young QB like Jackson, those two are perfect examples of who you should model your game after, and though he still has two years left in high school, he has been humbled by the whole recruiting process.

"I think it's really cool just to meet and talk with these coaches, and it has been very exciting," Jackson stated.

"Right now I am interested in any school that is interested in me, but of course Michigan, and Michigan State stand out."
