“One of the women described herself as a short haired old lady. Not so. The woman is mod, hip but doesn’t know it. She seems to carry a secret. The kind cats hold in their stretched limbs. It is as if she has the solution to a riddle she isn’t ready to solve. She would do it in her own time. Now she waits remembering the time when she loved cookies. Youthful, she is more 6 than 60 with her hand in the proverbial cookie jar. One day she will pull out a rabbit. She has an inviting torso the kind you want to succumb to. When she wore cashmere she was just that much more receiving. Her tone is comforting and anger feels far away when she speaks. She was accustomed to solving other people’s problems and now she had her own. She would be fine. She had a jar of solutions to chose from.”

The following poem was submitted to me by a friend and I think it’s awesome! Not only is it beautiful, but it does a great job of summarizing the intent of Elizabeth’s Canvas.

If you have any written works or poems about your battles with cancer, we would love to read them and share them with our community.

Elizabeth’s Canvas

“Cancer’ they said, my diagnosis of dread
not much more need be said.
wrong you must be, it cannot be so,
look at my body my soul (spirit) will not let go.

A mistake you have made an error so done,
how could it be me, I’m not the one.
I’ll find another one who will say,
‘don’t worry love, ’tis not you this day’.

Search though I did to lands far away,
the sentence the same, no other way.
treat what you can, let the course run true,
I’ll fight while I can, I’m not through.

Wondering why, alone, much despair
is anyone listening, does anyone care?
painful days lead into night,
my curse, my cross, my terrible plight.

A cause a movement a commitment so strong,
empower the mind, it cannot be wrong.
the battle declared, the opponent thus given,
from your body within the scourge be driven.

A canvas you say, strange though it seems,
give it a try, don’t question the means.
a bridge across time a new normal sought.
the “canvas” gives power through thought.

Seek and find to the net go,
art of yours to others show.
create with a strength newly found,
it is for you to bridge a new high ground.

Elizabeth, a canvas, a pallet, by her name begin,
courage and power comes from within.
the path is clear, continue the way,
survivors all, your strength made the day.”
-j.g.p March 2011
