For those of you unaware, Mark Kelson is collaborating with Duncan Patterson (ex-Anathema / ex-Antimatter / Ion) on his new project 'Alternative 4'. The album is called 'The Brink' and Mark will be contributing Vocals & Guitar to album. Tracking of the drums has began in Ireland & Duncan will head to Melbourne in June to commence work with Mark.

JAPANESE TOUR POSTPONED

We are very sad to announce today that it has been decided by our label and ourselves that the best option for our upcoming Japanese tour at the end of March is to postpone it for a couple of months.

With our drummer Marty breaking his hand and being out of action for a few months and now the terrible circumstances that have arisen in Japan we feel that it would be better to give your country and our drummer time to heal so that we can give you the best show possible.

This is of course a heart breaking decision for us and the crew at SM Records in Tokyo, but never fear this is only temporary and within a few months we will make sure we are there to play you some great shows! So to all our friends in Japan we are thinking of you and cant wait for the next few months to pass quickly so we can come and see you. Please keep your eyes open for the replacement dates shortly!

MARK JOINS DUNCAN PATTERSON IN 'ALTERNATIVE 4'

Duncan Patterson has been an integral part of the independent music scene since 1991, still today known and recognized as the original mastermind behind Anathema's early success and in particular as the driving composer behind the "Eternity" and "Alternative 4" albums. With his song writing he contributed in defining the doom metal sound first, and then piloted the band towards a deeper and rather advanced style which they followed and developed furtherly after Duncan's departure.

Unquiet and always daring to experiment, he then formed (and released four albums with) Antimatter together with Michael Moss, exploring several genres from deep electronica to folk acoustic, as recently documented by Antimatter's comprehensive compilation "Alternative matter".

But a creative spirit can't be kept in a cage.. thus Duncan abandoned again a project at its top peak and started another full time project called Íon, putting aside for a while the electronic trips and embracing the purity of acoustic, traditional and indigenous music but still marked with his well defined songwriting style.

In between recording and touring his own projects, he has also enjoyed taking parts to projects that were less spoken about in the indie/metal scene, like Irish alternative rock band The Aftermath or having his own music featured as movies soundtracks (the award-winning film "The sons of Eilaboun" and "Just Another Day").

Now to the most interesing part of this announcement: with his current project 'Alternative 4' Duncan has created what we can describe as a 'cinematic rock' monument, titled "The Brink", which recalls echoes of his previous work merged with classic sounding instrumentation.

Unsettling yet beautiful, The Brink is already and completely written and actually being recorded in different locations in this world and outer worlds.... The album will feature orchestral and chorals recorded in Monterrey, Mexico, as a diamond on top of a more solid and dark-rock core structure recorded in Ireland with the help of a few long-time collaborators and respected friends, like Mark Kelson (The Eternal) who will play an integral role on this release.

"The Brink" will be tentatively released in Summer 2011 and will be adorned with a beatiful packaging and visuals.

'UNDER A NEW SUN' HITS STORES IN AUSTRALIA

The Eternal's 4th studio album 'Under A New Sun' in now available through Green Distribution in Australia & NZ. Go to your local JB Hi-Fi and pick yourself up a copy or make sure they order it into the store! 'Under A New Sun' will also be on Itunes shortly.

The band released the first single and video from the album in November for the title track of the album and have since received national airplay including Triple J.  ‘Under A New Sun’

conceptually picks up where 'Kartika' left off with eastern influences, lashings of classic rock and an emotive lyrical approach. This album sees the band also experiment with new styles, combined with the colour, tone, textures and intricacies that have become the sound that defines The Eternal.

PRESS RELEASE - DRUMMER MARTY O'SHEA OUT WITH INJURY & GEELONG SHOW CANCELLED

After a successful album launch of 'Under A New Sun' at the East Brunswick Club in Melbourne last week it saddens us to inform you that our Drummer Marty O'Shea has broken a bone in his hand which requires surgery.
This will leave him unable to play drums for the next 2 months. In light of this event we have been left with no choice but to pull out of the Geelong show this coming weekend due to lack of time to rehearse with a new drummer. However, the show will go ahead with the other acts on the bill including Tread who supported us at the East Brunswick Club Launch taking the headlining slot. We are truly sorry for any inconvenience to our fans in Geelong but this is out of our control.

We have decided to forge ahead with the 'Under A New Sun' Australian tour and have brought back a familiar face to some of you. Drummer Ryan Buesnel will take the drum stool for the rest of the Australian tour. Some of you will know Ryan as the original drummer of The Eternal as he featured on our first album 'The Sombre Light of Isolation' back in 2004 and the European tour that followed. We warmly welcome Ryan back for the next few months & the three of us look forward to seeing you on the rest of the 'Under A New Sun' Australian tour shortly.

The Eternal have never been afraid to change their sound from one album to the next. Starting off live as an innocent gothic doom metal band, they transformed themselves on their previous release, Kartika, as the music sped up and became more complex.

With the release of their new album, Under a New Sun, The Eternal have shed their old skin, and we are left looking at an entirely new creature. Under the guidance of producer Jeff Martin of the The Tea Party fame, the band have transformed themselves into a rock’n’roll band with a penchant for face shredding solos and a raw, heavy feel.

Control, the album’s opener, is less a song than a statement of intent. It’s heavy, it’s fast, and while it may not really go anywhere, it has something that The Eternal have never had before: it is fucking cool.

The second and self titled track is all wailing guitars and distorted guitars, with Mark Kelson singing like he’s got a pair – and he’s not afraid to use them. It’s quite a transformation from the old days of the band, where Kelson’s great hooks were buried under a slow drum beat and a hollow production.

Delirium and Desire gives us our first taste of Mr Martin on backing vocals, and is basically a wet ballad, but the guitar solo midway through will leave you sweating and holding your ‘O’ face. Nothing Remains and Eclipse again demonstrate Kelson’s able control of the hook, but then things get turned upside down for The Sleeper.

It’s a duet between Kelson and Martin, and while it is a pretty good ballad, especially if you like your male vocals to be deep, powerful, and sung by Jeff Martin, I can’t help feeling it’s a Tea Party song. Not that that should be surprising given who produced the album and the influence that the Tea Party have been on the band.

Luckily, they make amends up next. A Thousand Shades of You is an unpredictable song. It starts out heavy as hell, before quietening down, where you will be disturbed by the wailing in the background. And then there’s the chorus. The reason why you will listen to this album. It’s typical of the Eternal: simple, beautiful, and with Martin’s backing vocals again, almost perfect. And it all works so well together, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. And just when you think it can’t get any better, there’s a solo so hot it’ll melt your skin and then mix it with flour to bake it into a cake.

Collapse follows, and where A Thousand Shades surprises you, this song is just so straightforward and rocky it makes you think it must have written itself. The use of effects is a bit confronting at the beginning of the song, but once it passes, you are left absorbed by this great rock song.

Cast in Stone, the second to last track on the album, appeared firstly as a remix on the Under a New Sun single. Having heard that version, I had low expectations for the album version. Thankfully, with the guitars added in, it presents itself as another highlight of the album. As heavy as hell at the start, you can’t help but bang your head, before the keyboards add a mystical quality to the verses. The chorus hits, and once again you’re left happy. The album finishes with a song that would be more fitting to the end of an eighties prog rock band. It’s easy listening, and helps lull you back to reality.

This is a genuinely enjoyable album from start to finish. The great pop sensibilities of the band have crossed over easily into the rock genre, and has benefitted from a fuller, faster and more raw sound. Under a New Sun was a leap into the unknown for the Eternal, and it’s paid off.
