I'm a female and I have big upper my arm and a lot of fat there. I've been doing a lot of arm exercises like curls and tricept stuff but they just look bigger. This is so frustrating. What can I do about fat arms? Ahhhh...help.

Thanks,

Sandy

The diet tends to make or break someone's fat burning, weight loss and fitness goals. Here are two tips that will jump start your diet and get you on track to accomplishing your fat burning, weight loss and fitness goals.

Simple tip number one is to add a vegetable/vegetables or berries to every meal. Both vegetables and berries are highly nutritious and they tend to be low in calories. By adding vegetables or berries to every meal you will make that meal more filling and nutritious. Making your meals filling and nutritious is highly important if you want to succeed in fat burning, weight loss and fitness long term.

Simple tip number two is to include a protein source in every meal. Protein is what is going to help repair, build and maintain muscle. Muscle is very important in keeping your metabolism boosted. A boosted/fast metabolism will help you burn fat and lose weight short and long term.

If you're just starting out, don't try to get to complicated with your diet. Start with these two easy tips and adjust your diet from there as necessary. Good luck!

<!--

Not only are leg and butt exercises good if you want to lose fat and tone up, but they're are very important in increasing your athleticism and fitness level.

Your leg muscles are large muscles that require a lot of energy to function, so by exercising those muscles, you burn a lot of calories and boost your metabolism significantly. So with that being said, here are the top three exercises that will work you lower body a.k.a legs and butt.

#1. Full Squats

Squat have gotten a bad reputation because most people do them wrong, placing the stress on the knees and not on the leg muscles. Check out Fat X workout 10 for an example of how to do full squats.

#2. Lunges

Lunges done properly require most of your leg muscle to work hard and unilaterally. Take a look at the second half of Fat X workout 3 for an example of how to to lunges.

#3. Three things that are required in peak athletic performance. One of my training philosophies is to exercise to improve athletic performance and your physique will follow. Just take a look at the physiques of top athletes in sports. An example of cross jumps are also in Fat X workout 3.

<!--

Q&A of The Week

Every week I answer a question or questions that are sent in to me regarding fat burning, weight loss, diet, fitness and or the Fat X program. Today's question was sent to me via Facebook and it's regarding yogurt on a weight loss diet.

Hey Coach,

I was wondering if I should add yogurt to my diet. I'm doing your fat loss program and it's going well so far, but I heard that yogurt is good for weight loss. What do you think.

Yogurt has health benefits but it has no direct link to weight loss/fat loss, at least none that I've read or heard about. With that being said, some yogurts do have a good amount of protein and yogurt is also good for your digestive system. So, indirectly it can help you in your fat loss/weight loss goals. I would be careful though as some yogurts are extremely high in sugar/carb content. Read the labels and choose wisely.

<!--

The main reason has been because they never made it a priority. If you want to succeed in your fitness, fat burning and or weight loss goals, it is highly important that it becomes a priority in your life.

You will do what it takes to take care of the things you find important in your life, family, your home, vehicle etc. Unfortunately a lot of people forget that their health should be high on the list of things that are important. Without your health, what do you really have? Who can you take care of? Will you really be happy being overweight and unhealthy?

In social gatherings my profession as a fitness coach usually comes up as a topic of conversation and there's always at least one person that claims they want to start working out and eating better. Then that statement is usually followed by a list of excuses of why they can't do it. One excuse that tends to come up a lot is that they can't afford it. Meanwhile they might be carrying a designer handbag, driving a luxury car, watching T.V on an expensive flat screen at home or enjoying expensive cocktails while hitting the night clubs.

Obviously these peoples priorities are skewed, prioritizing material possessions and leisure activities instead of their most important asset, their health. Don't fall into that trap. Make your health and fitness a top priority so that you can enjoy not only a long life, but also improve the quality of that life. Invest some time and money in your health now and make it a priority so that you don't have to deal with the medical consequences of obesity later. Heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and cancer all suck! Do what you can to prevent all that.

<!--

Anyway, I was wondering about supplementing my diet with protein. When is the best time to use a protein supplement.

Thanks a lot,

Daniel

The best time to have a protein supplement is when you feel the need to boost your protein intake, or you feel like you won't get a chance to have a good protein packed meal for a few hours. For example, I usually make a protein smoothie in the morning because I know I haven't had a good source of protein for possible 8-10 hours and I feel I need a protein boost. It's also convenient since I tend to be in a rush. I will also try to get in another protein smoothie post workout because I know that the faster I get protein into my system, the faster the recovery process can begin.

I've written about this before, but just as a quick reminder, protein feeds your muscle and your muscle will help boost your metabolism. All good if you want to burn fat and lose weight efficiently.

<!--

Today in "Coach Rollie Likes....." I'm featuring pistachio nuts.

I personally like the taste of pistachio nuts, but besides the taste, they are a healthy snack that can help your fat burning/fat loss, health and fitness goals. Nuts in general contain EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids) otherwise known as heart healthy fats. These fats are the unsaturated variety that tend to be hard to come by and low in most peoples diets. This type of fat has many health benefits, they're anti-inflammatory, they help prevent hearth disease, and they can help skin just to name a few. But let's get back to how they can help you in your fat burning and fat loss goals.

I'm a big fan of eating shelled nuts because it will slow you down a bit when you eat. It also keeps your hands busy so you're not just stuffing yourself with excess food. And because foods containing fat, good fat(EFA's) and even bad, are more satiating then foods high in carbs, you won't feel hungry as fast afterward, also helping to keep you from overeating. I usually eat the salted variety, but if you have issues with salt, you can choose unsalted.

If you know of a product, service or business that you think I might like and can help others in their fat burning/fat loss, health and fitness goals, feel free to e-mail me with that information. I'll check it out, and possible feature it on "Coach Rollie Likes......".

<!--

The best way to create this sense of urgency is to create deadlines and or goal dates.

Some of my most successful clients have been those that have a wedding coming up. Looking good for their wedding day creates a sense of urgency that keeps them focused on getting their workouts done every week and following their diet plan.

If you don't have a deadline or goal date, you don't have the same sense of urgency and focus that helps insure success and therefore it's easier to procrastinate and put off your fat burning, weight loss and fitness goals.

Get on track now, set a goal date, and create that sense of urgency. Spring is coming up in a few weeks and if you don't already have a goal date, I think it would definitely be a good idea to make that your goal date and create a sense of urgency. Start on the Fat X Program now, and have a better body and healthier body this Spring. This year Spring begins March 20th. Let's do this!!

If you're in the Pasadena area, feel free to contact me about private training sessions, or to join my FX Boot Camp and help you reach your fat burning, weigh loss and fitness goals this Spring.

<!--

I want my fitness program to survive the Super Bowl!!

Joseph

When it comes down to eating at parties, the most important thing is that you're not starving when you get there. Will power can only do so much. So here are a few tips:

Eat well before you go so that you don't pig out at the party on junk food.

Make sure that you are hydrated.

Snack on high protein foods..

Sip on bottled water to keep busy.

Plan and prepare a really good diet day on Monday.

Other than that, enjoy yourself a bit and read up on my diet break philosophy.

<!--

People eat it to start the day, and a lot of people eat it as a late night snack. What people don't know is that it's high in carbohydrates (carbs), and even worse, high in simple carbs. Eating this late at night is definitely not a good thing if you are looking to burn fat and lose weight.

Eating foods high in carbs, like cereal, bread and other sweets is a bad idea at night because your body most likely is not going to get a chance to burn off this source of energy, and that energy (carbs) is going to be stored as fat. Once stored as fat, it's a lot more difficult for you to break down that fat and burn it off.

For an alternative to cereal as a late night snack, I would have something high in protein with some good fat (EFA's). Celery and peanut butter, cottage cheese and peanut butter, or a protein drink with some fish oil capsules are all good choices.

The theory behind eating something high in protein with some good fat (EFA's) in the evening or at night is that your body will switch over to using fat for fuel instead of carbs and that your body will break down some of the stored fat on your body for fuel over night. Ideally your body will continue to use fat for fuel until the next time you have carbs.

The protein in you night meal will help you muscles recover, and that muscle will help keep you metabolism boosted further helping your body burn fat.

<!--

I like green tea not only for it's metabolism boosting properties, but for the anti-oxidants and over all health benefits. The problem most people have with green tea is the taste. If you don't normally like the taste of green tea, try Lipton's Diet Green Tea with Citrus. It taste's pretty damn good and it's a nice alternative to hot tea, water, or diet sodas when you need to wash down your food with something flavored.

If you know of a product, service or business that you like and feel it can help others in their fat burning/fat loss, health and fitness goals, feel free to e-mail me with that information. Today's question sent in by a myspace friend and was in regards to my diet and eating breakfast.

Hey Coach,

I've gone through the Fat X Program once already with only using a protein powder supplement and did really well. I lost about 10 lbs in 16 days and almost two inches off my stomach. I now want to try it while using maybe a fat burner and a protein powder and was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. Thanks for your help.

Rob

As far as fat burners are concerned, there are two that I would recommend. One is a popular brand that has a mix of solid ingredients. It's called Lipo 6. I had Subject X use it during his Fat X project. The other is a green tea based fat burner and I would recommend that one because it contains green tea and the over all health benefits attributed to it's anti-oxidant content. You can find them both on Amazon at a good price.

Lipo-6X

Applied Nutrition Green Tea Fat Burner with EGCG - 200 Softgels

<!--

By public I mean I posted them here on Fat X 101. Just in case you missed the postings, I thought I would review these fat burning/fat loss projects so as to help answer a few common questions that I receive. Does the Fat X Program work? Will it help flatten my stomach? Can I use it to get a six pack? I also hope that that you are motivated to get started or to continue on a fat loss/fat burning and fitness journey.

Each of these public projects where a bit different in the sense that I used subjects with different needs, fitness backgrounds and varying fitness levels. With all that out of the way, I was able to do a Fat X Project last June.

With Aleen I decided to stretch out the program over five weeks. I had been getting several questions from people that could only workout out a few times a week and wondered if it would work over a longer period of time. I also wanted to use an older subject. Here are the results.

My next Fat X Project was started before and went through the Christmas holiday. This project was code named Subject X partially due to the fact that doing the Fat X Program through the Christmas holiday was definitely going to be an X factor. The diet was as I expected, very choppy. Nonetheless, the fat burning/ fat loss results where pretty good due to the fact he completed the workouts in 12 days and pushed hard through every single workout. Subject X's work ethic was definitely admirable, his diet, not so much lol. Here are his results.

On the heels of Subject X's completed Fat X Project came my brother's. He expressed interest in doing the Fat X Program in order to get him down to his MMA fighting weight. This project presented some unique issues. He was already in good cardiovascular shape, he was doing MMA training, he was working on his Masters thesis, he's married with three children and works as a teacher full time. There was plenty of excuses there at the ready if he wanted to take them, but he pushed through the 12 days with the only hick up being New Year's Eve. The nice thing about this fat burning/fat loss project was that he kept a photo journal of all his meals through the 12 days as an example of one way to set up a healthier diet. Here are his results. .

Last but not least, I wanted to showcase a Fat X Project that was done only via the website, meaning I didn't personally oversee this one. I thought it was a great example of how someone can go from good to even better. Richard sent me the before and after pictures and here they are.

Seeing others get good results motivates me and I hope that it will also motivate you to get on track or stay on track with your fat burning/fat loss and fitness goals. Every week or so I'll be featuring a product, service or business that I personally like and that can possibly help you in your fat burning/fat loss, health and fitness goals. Today I'll be featuring Nutrition For Less, a supplement store located in Pasadena.

A friend of mine turned be on to this store about a week ago. She told me that it had just opened and they had really good prices on supplements. Low on protein powder, I decided to check it out yesterday. The person that greeted me as I walked in the door was very personable and promptly asked me if I needed help. When I told him I came in to get some protein powder, he quickly pointed me in the right direction and also told me about a sale they had going. I was impressed by the value of the protein powder he told me about and decided to buy it. My experience at Nutrition For Less was very pleasant and I would definitely recommend it if you're in the Pasadena area. It's located at 777 S. Arroyo Parkway Pasadena, CA 91105 and their phone number is 626-7371234.

If you know of a product, service or business that you think I might like and can help others in their fat burning/fat loss, health and fitness goals, feel free to e-mail me with that information. Should I weigh myself every day, every week?

Thanks for your help.

Linda

There's a few ways I like to keep track of fat loss/fat burning progress. The first one is to take before pictures. After all, one of your goals is probably to look better or leaner. I would do this weekly. The other method of keeping track of progress that I prefer is to take measurements with a simple tape measure. It's quick, easy and will also give you a good idea of what's going on with your body fat. Lastly, I really don't like using a scale because it tends to be the most inaccurate way of measuring fat loss/fat burning progress or success. Your total body weight can fluctuate drastically depending on your hydration levels. Stick mostly to pictures and the tape measure method and good luck with the program.

<!--

His Fat X Project was successful not only because he lost weight, but because that weight was mostly fat loss and it looks like he also gained some muscle in the process. He is now close to where he wants to be as far as weight and fat percentage is concerned. He's going to work on losing another layer of fat to really get to where he needs to be in order for him to compete in another MMA event. I'm sure he'll get there soon. I'm also confident that once that next layer comes off he will have a visible six pack to show off this spring.

As I mentioned before, along with the Fat X workouts, he was doing additional MMA training at the Fight Academy in Pasadena to sharpen his MMA skills. I've trained there myself and if you're looking for a good place to train MMA check it out. It's located at 491 South Arroyo Parkway. One of the trainers there is a real down to earth guy that's actually an MMA fighter, Savant Young. They will actually be hosting the first sanctioned MMA fight in Pasadena later this month.

<!--

The only difference is that it is modified so as to be able to be done in a group environment. The FX Boot Camp classes are also a bit longer than the average Fat X workout because you're not working out 12 days in a row and therefore overtraining is not a problem. Even so, the classes are extremely structured and there is very little down time or filler exercises such as long distance running as in other boot camps. I only use the best of the best exercises, done in an optimal order for the best possibility of fat loss success.

<!--

Code named Fight Ready Fat X because of my brother's goal to get close to his MMA fighting weight, it was a success. He definitely burned off some fat, maintained and built some muscle, and most importantly used the Fat X workout program to improve on his fitness level. He also managed to keep a photo diet/meal journal through out the 12 days.

Here is what he had on day 12. He actually should have eaten more this day, but he was nervous about how the pictures would come out and only ate three times. Unfortunately, I think this had the opposite effect and probably slowed his metabolism, not good on the last day.

Suggestions:

More food! I must say, I'm not very happy with the meal choices for this day. I think it's lacking in vegetables, protein and it's a little high with the nuts. Nuts are high in fat and although they contain a good fat which can help your fat burning goals, too much is not good.

Suggestions:

More veggies and protein.
