It was puzzling as to why Norwegian farmed fish were being offered in Canadian grocery stores, given that Canada is bordered by two oceans. Shouldn't Canadians have an abundance of our own locally sourced salmon?

Last night on the news, the answer to my question became clear. Apparently a fish farm on Canada's East Coast (Newfoundland to be exact) was in a heap of a mess. Mass numbers of salmon in ocean cages have died off due to unexpected rising water temperature. The rot is causing problems for local fishermen and it appears to be polluting the surrounding natural water.

Lo and behold, the operator of the fish farm is a Norwegian company! What?!?! (insert vinyl record screeching noise here)

This is quite a catastrophic hot mess! With global warming of sea waters, this issue is about to get worse. I don't want to eat their fish, yet salmon is my favorite food. What else don't we know about Canadian fish farming?!?

Here's the video from CBC News so you can see the problem for yourself...

Fish is one of our favorites and neither of us has been fishing in a long time. So the grocery store is the next best thing to feed our fish hankerings.
He announced proudly that the thick salmon filet was "Norwegian" so "it's gotta be good and healthy".

And when I think of Norway, I think of this...

So this Norwegian fish must be good and clean and wholesome! Right?... right?

But then I remembered a video I had seen on YouTube. I'm pretty sure it was about the fish farms in Norway. They are considered to be the most polluted, toxic fish in the world. That can't be right!! Was it actually Norwegian? It can't be that our Canadian supermarket is trying to pass this off to Canadians as if we have no fish stocks of our own. I must be wrong in that recollection!

Then I went digging for the video. Sure enough the video was about Norwegian fish farms. It's the antithesis of what you'd expect. I suppose that's why it's so shocking. And that's why I want to share that information here. Because it would be easy for you all to go searching for "good fish" and assume that Norwegian is "good, clean and wholesome". But the reality is quite nasty. In fact, if you live in France, 70% of the fish sold in your country comes from these Norwegian farms.

The video can only be seen on YouTube, so here's the link. Judge for yourself...

Naturally the folks at Norway's fish farms are not pleased about the documentary, so here's their response to the situation...

It's good that they are trying to change their methods but for now, my household will be avoiding this particular type of fish.
Man! This photo is awesome! I found it on Pinterest without any credits and wanted to know more. What was the deal with Jim Morrison of The Doors and fishing? According to a site called "feel numb" this fishing trip happened in September of 1970 in the Bahamas.

Jim was on a break from his <strike>indecent exposure</strike> bullsh!t trial in Miami. He took a two day charter for "some fishing, snorkeling and drinking" along with his friend Babe Hill and his Beverly Hills lawyer Max Fink. (hmm, those are some pretty funky names!)
We advocate for "catch and release", but every once in a while there's a need to get a little reward. So, if you do manage to catch a great fish and decide this is the one you've gotta eat, then here's a guideline on how to get that job done (above).

For a lot more insight, check out the full article. It's pretty interesting but a little gory if you've never handled a live fish before... https://www.fix.com/blog/hooking-and-cooking-a-fish/

For most of my life, I've been a complete fanatic for salmon. Any type. I'll eat it straight from the can, skin and all (well, usually minus the bones unless my eagerness gets the better of me).

When I first moved out on my own at age 16, my friends and I would go fish out a salmon from the local river every Friday night. Before I learned how to set up house and home, the first thing I mastered was cleaning salmon and prepping it for the barbecue. I mean... I *LOVE* salmon!

Nothing better on a Friday night than a buttered, grilled, garlic-filled salmon with a cold beer.

When my dad was still alive (up until I turned 8) he fed me a lot of seafood. In fact, my first solid food was a sardine, which he slipped me when my mom wasn't looking. I was still in a high chair and he slips me a sardine! Ha ha, apparently my little tastebuds were quite shocked and I made some unpleasant faces. But sardines later came to be one of my favorite foods. For sure, he influenced my pallette to love all seafood.

Later in life, a few years after dad's passing, I discovered salmon on my own and it was love at first taste. Ever since then, I can never get enough of the stuff. I don't know why. I'm just crazy about it and that's all I know!

So then... imagine my surprise to find that my father's home town - Campbellton, New Brunswick in Eastern Canada is known as "the undisputed capital of salmon country". They have various sculptures to showcase their love and pride of the lively (and tasty) salmon.

Apparently there is even a "Salmon Plaza", plus a "Salmon Festival" each year. What?!?! Is it possible that salmon is in my D.N.A.??!?

This is really fascinating and I can't explain it but would love to hear your theories in the comments section about how such a coincidence came to be.

Here's an excerpt from the wikipedia page for Campbellton N.B....

Campbellton is the undisputed capital of salmon country. Sport fishing enthusiasts literally travel from around the world to this part of New Brunswick in search of Atlantic Salmon. To honour the king of game fish, the City erected an 8.5 meter stainless steel sculpture on its waterfront and lovingly adopted him as "Restigouche Sam". In the summer months, Salmon Plaza provides a picturesque backdrop for many photo opportunities and serves as an ideal spot for activity during the annual Salmon Festival (usually held the last week in June). [source]
