Christopher’s Smile was set up in October 2008 by Karen & Kevin Capel following the tragic death of their only son Christopher from medulloblastoma, an aggressive brain tumour.

Supporting UK research centres such as The Institute of Cancer Research Christopher’s Smile aims to raise money to fund development of new drugs to treat medulloblastoma and other childhood cancers without devastating side effects. These drugs will provide an effective cure for all and save the lives of the 25% of children who currently do not survive their disease.

Every penny raised and donated goes directly into the cause – we take nothing out for administrative costs.

Our vision is for every child diagnosed with childhood cancer to not only survive, but to reach adulthood enjoying a good quality of life.

For more information please take a look at our website:

FATE, a local charity that sponsors the education of under-privileged children in developing countries, is celebrating this week as Dmitry Drozdov won the TRI Nations v UK 10K Run at Dorney Lake...

FATE takes gold at Tri-Nations 10k

FATE, a local charity that sponsors the education of under-privileged children in developing countries, is celebrating this week as Dmitry Drozdov won the TRI Nations v UK 10K Run at Dorney on Sunday with a fantastic time of just 37 minutes and 27 seconds, with Emma Flower coming second in the senior ladies’ category in just 44 minutes 26 seconds. Dmitry and Emma were two of sixteen competitors running for FATE.

Also worth a special mention are Melissa Pitt and Anthony Hall who are getting married this weekend and who travelled to Dorney from Swansea especially to run for FATE dressed in a veil and top hat! – we wish them all the very best for their special day.

The Tri-Nations 10k encourages runners to represent their country, and the FATE team joined in wholeheartedly, with runners representing Russia, Afghanistan, New Zealand, Holland, Wales, Sweden, the USA and of course the UK. As well as being a multi-cultural group, it was a group of mixed ability with Sarah Nutbrown – a determined FATE trustee – still smiling and bringing up the rear of the race almost an hour after Dmitry had finished, having walked the course in an hour and 36 minutes.

The FATE team has raised over £1,000 with sponsorship money still coming in, which is a great achievement. If you would like to help FATE achieve its fundraising target and sponsor the group, please visit www.virginmoneygiving.com/fatedorneyrun.

Note to editors

Fund for Action Through Education (FATE) is a UK registered charity (registered number 1125401) which supports underprivileged children in developing countries by providing them with access to good quality education. For further information, please visit www.fateuk.org or contact Sarah Noor at mail@fateuk.org or on 07961 942213.

Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. Why not join our Run Richmond Riverside 10k and support Macmillan...

Macmillan Cancer Support

Why not run for Macmillan Cancer Support . Join us at our Run Richmond Riverside 10k on the 16th October. This event is selling quickly so if you fancy it, make sure you sign up soon! Click here to go to the event page.

Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. One in three of us will get cancer. 2 million of us are living with it. We are all affected by cancer. We can all help. We are Macmillan.

As treatments improve, more and more people are living with cancer in their daily lives. This means they need more than medical help, they also need practical, emotional and financial support.

We are a source of support

We are a source of support, helping with all the things that people affected by cancer want and need. It’s not only patients who live with cancer, so we also help carers, families and communities. We guide people through the system, supporting them every step of the way. We fund nurses and other specialist health care professionals and build cancer care centres. But we give so much more than medical help.

People need practical support at home, so we provide anything from some precious time off for a carer, to a lift to hospital. People need emotional support, so we listen, advise and share information though our CancerLine, website, support groups and trained professionals. People need financial help to cope with the extra costs cancer can bring, so we give benefits advice, and grants for anything from heating bills to travel costs. Together we listen, we learn, we act to help people live with cancer.

We are a force for change

We are a force for change, listening to people affected by cancer and working together to improve cancer care. People who live with cancer are experts by experience. Together we use this knowledge to make a positive difference to the lives of people affected by cancer. This could be anything from getting a coffee machine installed in a waiting room, to bringing about changes in the law.

We fight discrimination – from challenging unfair travel costs and insurance policies to improving the national benefits system. Together we challenge the status quo, we push for change, we lead the way.

We are Macmillan

We believe we can all help. We can raise money – through marathons, coffee mornings, street collections, sponsored events. We can give time – at cancer care centres, events, fundraising groups. We can share experiences – online, in the media, with each other. We are Macmillan.

The Running School® has developed training protocols which can teach anyone how to run efficiently and how to run faster in 6 hours!

The Concept is to teach people of all ages to how to run and how to run fast! Most people have not been taught how to run; they assume it’s something that comes naturally. But running is a skill and just like any other skill it can be learnt.

Although it seems the most natural thing in the world to do many people don’t know how to run efficiently without getting injured, and to achieve their goal or challenge. People use running to stay fit, for weight loss or to help them with their sport or challenge like running a marathon. Children in particular, because of the reduced time they have to play outside at a young age have underdeveloped motor control skills – running, jumping, turning and sprinting. The purpose of The Running School® is to teach people how to run and then teach them how to run faster.

The Running School® has developed training protocols which can teach anyone how to run efficiently and how to run faster in 6 hours! The coaching methodology has been proven with thousands of non-athletes and elite athletes and is easy to follow, effective, complete and motivating.

It works equally well with kids as it does with adults who want to learn how to run or improve their running technique and speed.

Benefits of the Running School®

Improved running technique

Increased efficiency of running technique

Increased confidence and enjoyment

Decreased risk of injury associated with running

Better muscle balance and coordination

Whatever stage of athlete you are, whether a pro or only beginning, you will be aware of the importance of fuelling correctly for training and races. However, even more important than fuelling is re fuelling. Find out more...

Recovery

Whatever stage of athlete you are, whether a pro or only beginning, you will be aware of the importance of fuelling correctly for training and races. However, even more important than fuelling is re fuelling.

After your hard training sessions, the body needs to rebuild and repair – Good nutrition helps to minimise muscle damage, decrease recovery time and increase strength and performance.

To help you improve further in your training, follow these tips to make sure you are re fuelling correctly!

0 – 2 hours after finishing your workout, it is CRUCIAL to re fuel the body. This time frame is further broken down into 2 sections

0-30 minutes post workout – Do not miss this time frame of re fuelling!

Within this time have a post workout drink containing carbohydrates and protein (2 part carbohydrate: 1 protein ratio).

For example 1 scoop protein powder (whey/soy/hemp) with cherry juice

1-2 hours post workout – Within this time have carbohydrates such as whole grain bread, pasta, rice, potatoes etc! With lean meat, fish, chicken, turkey, eggs and mixed vegetables or salad.

Sugary carbohydrates such as baked goods (muffins, croissants), jelly sweets, white bread and pasta should be eaten closer to post workout i.e. within 0-1 hour post workout

Fluids

After a heavy training session remember to drink lots of fluid to replace what was lost.

Stick to water, if you want to have a sports drink, have these within 0-45 minutes of finishing.

The amount and types of carbohydrate, protein and fat in recovery nutrition should be personalised to you regarding your training goals, body composition and where necessary food intolerances should be tested, so as to determine specific food and supplements to consume and avoid.

Katey Halliday is a Registered Nutritionist and Fitness Nutrition Specialist. She is based in London’s Harley Street and works with a range of athletes from recreational to professional. Katey is also a triathlete herself, and is regularly competing in local and international events.

Mo Running is set to take over the month of November and we want you to be part of the action!

2010 will see Mo Running launched across a number of UK locations and will include 5k and 10k running. And not only that Mo Running will also hit Australia and New Zealand.

It’s all about growing the Mo (girls, you don’t have to do this – but we still want you to run!) and why not get in those fancy dress outfits! We are pleased to be supporting Movember and the Prostate Cancer Charity. From every entry fee a percentage will go directly to supporting this charity. If you choose to fundraise that would be fantastic but it’s not a requirement. Just your involvement will be hugely appreciated.

Entries are open on our site for a number of our Mo Runs so make sure you sign up soon as places are going to sell out very quickly. We will keep you posted of updates and news. Get ready for Mo Running to take over the world!!!!!

We are pleased to be managing this run again for Kew Charity Events. Check out the details...

A prestigious annual Run open to all age groups above 16 years, with personal 10k times of 40 to 80 minutes. Starting on Kew Green you will quickly join the riverside towpath running towards Richmond , entering a circuit of Old Deer Park with 5k water station , then returning to Kew Green via the towpath.

The Run is limited this year to 1,500 entrants so get all your friends together and come and join us - this will sell out soon !

There will be full supporting infrastructure with digital chip timing / screens , Start / Finish gantry , PA system , w.c. facilities , and full course and kilometre markings.

Runners will receive a medal and awards will be presented by MP Sue Kramer.

Kew Charity Events is a wholly voluntary organisation raising funds for local and national Charitable Causes , and relies on each runner to provide a minimum £30 sponsorship to support these activities.

By paying your sponsorship through www.justgiving.com/kewcharityevents we are able to recoup an additional 28% from the government - an invaluable contribution to our work.

Event Information

ARRIVAL and REGISTRATION

The Run will start at 9am. Registration will be open from 7.45am and will close at 8.50am so please arrive nice and early.

You will receive your race pack in the post prior to the event.

When you register on the day of the event you will receive a RACE CHIP. This will correspond with your race number. This is essential to record your time. Please make sure you put this through your shoelace and make sure it is on before the start of the event and PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAND BACK TO OUR TEAM after you cross the finish line. If not there is a £10 charge!

The run will kick off at 9am starting on KEW GREEN, Richmond, TW9 3AA. There is no dedicated car park here so if you are driving please arrive early to find parking.

Toilets will be situated on the green.

There is no dedicated bag storage however if you need to leave items with our registration team you can, but this is at your own risk.

EVENT DETAILS

The course will take you out and down the river towards Richmond, turning on to Old Deer Park and then heading back along the river to finish at Kew Green! Remember it’s all good fun and you can walk, jog or run!! Please note the course may be altered prior to the event and if so we will inform you of this.

Please note that the start of the run will be staggered. However this will not affect your time as our race timing system will record your time from when you cross the starting mat. However if you are in it to win, then we suggest you start in one of the front groups as placings are based on gun time. There will be marshals around the course to support and encourage you.

Please take care when running around the course as this is public land and local residents will be on the towpaths and in the Park. Results will be displayed on our race timing screen so after crossing the finish line you can check out your time!! Drinks and fruit will be available at the finish line.

AFTER THE EVENT

Everyone will receive a medal and there are also a few trophies that are up for grabs! You will be able to check out your instant race results.

We look forward to seeing you at the event. Results will be up online within 48 hours of the event completion. We look forward to seeing you soon and if you have any questions regarding the run, please do not hesitate to contact us.
