I see that a lot of people out there don’t want to fill out the Census forms. Thats your prerogative and whatever, I just don’t personally care what big brother knows about me. They already know all of my tax information and business information and I am really pretty boring. That said, there is a reason for everyone in Florence to fill out the Census forms.

New businesses? They look at those numbers.

New restaurants? Look at those numbers.

New franchises? Look at those numbers.

It also determines funding for roads, healthcare, and other vital services.

I don’t know about you but I want new restaurants and businesses to come to Florence. I am a big fan of having more options to choose from. I am not taking a political stance on if it is cost effective and if we should have it and yada yada yada. All I care about is my palate having a more diverse selection. I’ll take a Carrabba’s over politics EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. Or a Macaroni Grill! OOO… maybe a Cheesecake Factory (dreaming, I know.)

It is Wednesday, and I am tired. I can’t think of anything witty to say, but Pee Dee Foodie wrote a nice post on Fox’s Pizza. I love Fox’s Pizza. I have their number stored in the contacts in my phone. (No you may not start looking through my contacts to see if I am who you think I am. I’m not. )

With the beauty of dance, the magic of dreams and the sounds of music, the South Carolina Dance Theater presents “Dances, Dreams and Music” at the Florence Little Theatre on March 12th, 13th and 14th. Featuring live orchestral accompanient by the Florence Symphony Orchestra, the program brings the emotions of all dreams to the stage with “Night of Dreams,” ” Parade of Dreams,” ” Shattered Dreams,” “Carnival of Dreams,” and “Dreams of Light.” The full Company will be featured in “The Gift of Dances and Dreams.”

Performances are Friday, March 12th, at 7:30 pm, Saturday, March 13th at 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 14th, at 3:00 pm. Online reservations will open to our Season Membership Subscribers on Monday, February 22nd, and to the general public on Monday, March 1st, by visting our website. For those patrons who wish to purchase tickets in the more traditional method, the Florence Little Theatre Box Office (843-662-3713) will open on Monday, March 8th, from 10:00 to 5:00 daily. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for students/children.

“Gypsy Carnival,” a special outreach for our younger audience, will be presented on Satuday, March 13th, at 2:00. This abbreviated ballet will present the story of village life though dance and will be followed by a “Village Tea” with refreshments and an opportunity to meet the dancers. This performance is not a part of the Company’s regular season offering and Season Membership Subscribers may not use their membership tickets for this performance .Ticket prices are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for students/childern.

It is finally starting to warm up! I actually was able to wear flip-flops most of the day yesterday. My southern blood needed some thawing out, so we spent most of the day outside. I can always tell when spring is in the air because the number of events start multiplying!

The Costas family has opened JP’s Steak and Seafood House on Irby Street. I went last weekend with a large group of girls, and we had the best time!

JP’s has a great menu with a diverse selection. I really enjoyed the scallops. Another girl at my table had prime rib that she loved, and another loved the flounder. I did not get the She Crab Soup but that is a definite on my list for next time (and there will be a next time). There was a nice sized crowd there. We got there early so we didn’t have to wait, which was nice.

I loved the food, and I also loved the atmosphere. You can certainly tell this is a family business. Everyone is friendly and working together. I spent a good bit of time wandering around looking at the decor.

I REALLY want to go to this… just to see what it is all about. I have some friends up North that always ask about reenactments. I feel like a true Southerner, but my experience with these is very limited. Read more here.

The Skirmish At Gamble’s Hotel depicts an encounter that occurred on March 5, 1865 when 500 federal soldiers, under the command of Colonel Reuben Williams of the 12th Indiana Infantry, marched into the Florence area to destroy the railroad depot. These federal troops were met by a group of Confederate soldiers who drove them away with the help of 400 reinforcements from the area home guard.

The Columns is a popular name for The Harwell House at Rankin Plantation, a beautiful antebellum home that dates back over 100 years. The name refers to the 22 Greek style, Doric columns that surround the home on three sides. The house was placed on the National Register of historic places in 1974.

Proceeds from our event go towards historical preservation such as the 23rd History Scholarship, the Florence Stockade, the Florence Museum of Art, Science and History, the SC Confederate Relic Room & Military Museum at the SC State Museum, and other worthy projects.
