• The University of Toledo leaves tips around campus to let students know where to find all the recycling bins (no more pizza box graveyards in students’ dorm rooms!).
• For their Sustainability Week activities (how awesome is it that they have that?), the University at Albany-SUNY rewarded students and faculty with 10 campus dollars for leaving tips about sustainability for others to discover.
• For a recent food drive, George Mason University created a foursquare list of all the participating drop-off locations accepting canned food, so students all over campus knew where to take their donations.
• At the University of North Alabama (Go Lions!), a simple tweet about an overflowing garbage can inspired a student to turn it into its own foursquare venue, pointing out the need for more recycling bins. Students started checking in to it, and the Student Government Association responded by ramping up efforts on its recycling program! Success!

Today, we’re launching an updated version of Explore for iPhone and Android, bringing over a bunch of the great features from our recent Explore on the web launch straight to your phone, like changing your location, filtering your recommendations, and photos in your search results! Get ready for personalized recommendations for whatever you’re craving, wherever and whenever you need them!

Smarter searching
Every time you search with Explore, we’ll show you results based on the time of day, places your friends have been or left tips, places on lists you follow, and places we think you’ll like based on the 1,500,000,000 check-ins on foursquare.

Tap the top right filter button (bottom right on Android), to narrow your results by places you and your friends have been. Try selecting ‘New to me’ and ‘My friends have been’ to catch up on what you’ve been missing out on! With every suggestion, we show you which of your friends have tried that place, so it’s easy to get suggestions and see what’s popular.

Recommendations for anywhere
On your way to another part of town, or a new town altogether? One big new feature: you can now drag your map around, or enter a neighborhood, city or address to get recommendations for anywhere you want. Try pinching in or out, or double tapping to zoom quickly. It’s easy to focus in on where you want to go.

So… your homework assignment: pull out your phone and find some fun places to go!

• Look for a coffee shop nearby that you’ve never been to before.
• Pick a city you’ve always wanted to visit and find some Top Picks for when you go on your dream trip, or find things to do based on your friends’ past vacations!
• Try searching “romantic,” “cozy,” or “Tuesday” to find a date night spot for Valentine’s Day. (P.S. Explore also works great for ideas for where to find romantic gifts!)

We’ve been working hard to make Explore better, inside and out. Overall, you’ll notice a cleaner design, improved search results, and tons of cred with your friends for always knowing the best place to go.

Actually, there were so many awesome lists, we picked five (and it was so hard to narrow it down that far)! Here they are:

Baltimore, Maryland

With retweets from the mayor, the governor, the lieutenant governor, The Good Wife star Josh Charles, Charm City Cakes, and their Ace of Cakes star Duff Goldman, Visit Baltimore won the follower count category with over 1000 followers! Check out their amazing list, featuring everything from the best Thursday night karaoke bar, to the uncanny Frank Zappa Statue.

Richmond, Virginia

Richmond is for lovers! And for people who love museums, great dining, Edgar Allan Poe, and art gallery tattoo parlors. This list garnered a tweet from Virginia’s governor and almost 500 followers!

Des Moines, Iowa

We were super impressed by this Des Moines city list made by Drake University’s Social Media Strategies Class. They joined forces to write a bunch of great tips, got the word out, and got over 250 followers. Their list features fairgrounds, zombie burger joints, delicious cornbread and more.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

One of the tips on this list is: “Bone up on your skeletal knowledge at the Museum of Osteology.” Need we say more? This list, filled with gorgeous photos and lovely tips made us want to visit OK immediately. Bonus points for tweets from the governor and lieutenant governor!

Stamford, Connecticut

No small efforts for this small town list. We were blown away by the amazing effort and twitter promotion by list-maker Dave K, one of the first people to submit his list. Great job on the retweet by your congressman!

Congratulations to our winners! It was extremely difficult to choose just five cities, and there are many reasons why other cities would have been great winners, too. Overall, we wanted to reward a variety of factors, from big efforts from small towns, to great tips and photos, to follower counts.

But there were so many more we loved!
One of the best things about this contest was seeing all the friendly competition. Tourism boards, government officials, and even Paula Deen got in on the action!

Our city badge contest was inspired by the White House’s #visitUS initiative to boost tourism, but we had so much fun with it, we just might roll more out in the future (including one for our amazing international community).
