<li>The University of Toledo leaves <a href="https://foursquare.com/utoledo/list/recycling-on-campus " target="_blank">tips</a> around campus to let students know where to find all the recycling bins (no more pizza box graveyards in students’ dorm rooms!).</li>

Your dinner date just went swimmingly, now where’s a great place to get dessert, or see some live music? Or maybe you&#8217;re looking to grab lunch – should you go healthy (‘salad,’ ‘grilled chicken,’ ‘wrap’) or bold (‘bacon burger,’ ‘chicken fingers,’ ‘milkshake’)? Whatever you can think of, Explore can be your guide.</p>
<p>Today, we’re launching an updated version of Explore for <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/foursquare/id306934924?mt=8" target="_blank">iPhone</a> and <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joelapenna.foursquared" target="_blank">Android</a>, bringing over a bunch of the great features from our recent <a href="http://foursquare.com/explore" target="_blank">Explore on the web</a> launch straight to your phone, like changing your location, filtering your recommendations, and photos in your search results! Get ready for personalized recommendations for whatever you’re craving, wherever and whenever you need them!</p>
<p><em><strong>Smarter searching</strong></em><br />
Every time you search with Explore, we’ll show you results based on the time of day, places your friends have been or left tips, places on lists you follow, and places we think you’ll like based on the 1,500,000,000 check-ins on foursquare.</p>
<p>Tap the top right filter button (bottom right on Android), to narrow your results by places you and your friends have been. Try selecting ‘New to me’ and ‘My friends have been’ to catch up on what you’ve been missing out on! With every suggestion, we show you which of your friends have tried that place, so it’s easy to get suggestions and see what’s popular.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1173914308" title="Explore search" src="http://foursquare.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Explore-search.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="353" /></p>
<p><em><strong>Recommendations for anywhere</strong></em><br />
On your way to another part of town, or a new town altogether? One big new feature: you can now drag your map around, or enter a neighborhood, city or address to get recommendations for anywhere you want. Try pinching in or out, or double tapping to zoom quickly. It’s easy to focus in on where you want to go.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1173914309" title="Pick location" src="http://foursquare.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Pick-location.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="360" /></p>
<p><em><strong>So… your homework assignment: pull out your phone and find some fun places to go!</strong></em></p>
<ul>
<li>Look for a coffee shop nearby that you’ve never been to before.</li>
<li>Pick a city you’ve always wanted to visit and find some Top Picks for when you go on your dream trip, or find things to do based on your friends’ past vacations!</li>
<li>Try searching “romantic,” “cozy,” or “Tuesday” to find a date night spot for Valentine’s Day. (P.S. Explore also works great for ideas for where to find romantic gifts!)</li>
</ul>
<p>We’ve been working hard to make Explore better, inside and out. Overall, you’ll notice a cleaner design, improved search results, and tons of cred with your friends for always knowing the best place to go.</p>
<p>Happy exploring! Get your <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/foursquare/id306934924?mt=8" target="_blank">iPhone</a> and <a href="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joelapenna.foursquared" target="_blank">Android</a> updates now.</p>

<p>Actually, there were so many awesome lists, we picked five (and it was so hard to narrow it down that far)! Here they are:</p>
<p><em><strong>Baltimore, Maryland</strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://foursquare.com/v/washington-monument--museum/4ad4c016f964a520f4ef20e3"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1173914306" title="Screen shot 2012-02-08 at 12.06.35 PM" src="http://foursquare.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Screen-shot-2012-02-08-at-12.06.35-PM.png" alt="" width="449" height="516" /></a></p>
<p>With retweets from the <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/MayorSRB/status/162908988143452162" target="_blank">mayor</a>, the <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/GovernorOMalley/status/162980112814440449 " target="_blank">governor</a>, the <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ltgovbrown/status/162984660316602368 " target="_blank">lieutenant governor</a>, T<em>he Good Wife </em>star <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/BaltimoreMD/status/164120459791704065" target="_blank">Josh Charles</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/BaltimoreMD/status/163003348918865921  " target="_blank">Charm City Cakes</a>, and their <em>Ace of Cakes</em> star <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/BaltimoreMD/status/163003348918865921  " target="_blank">Duff Goldman</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/baltimoremd" target="_blank">Visit Baltimore</a> won the follower count category with over 1000 followers! Check out their <a href="https://foursquare.com/baltimoremd/list/charms-of-baltimore-visitus-4sq?ref=tw " target="_blank">amazing list</a>, featuring everything from the best Thursday night karaoke bar, to the uncanny Frank Zappa Statue.</p>
<p><em><strong>Richmond, Virginia</strong></em></p>
<p><a href="https://foursquare.com/v/canal-walk/4ad4f29af964a520e3ff20e3  "><img class="aligncenter" title="Richmond" src="http://foursquare.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Richmond.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="349" /></a></p>
<p>Richmond is for lovers! And for people who love museums, great dining, Edgar Allan Poe, and art gallery tattoo parlors. This <a href="https://foursquare.com/rvabadge/list/your-city-guide-to-rva-visitus-richmond-va " target="_blank">list</a> garnered a tweet from Virginia’s <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/GovernorVA/status/165449742925561860 " target="_blank">governor</a> and almost 500 followers!</p>
<p><em><strong>Des Moines, Iowa</strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://foursquare.com/v/zombie-burger--drink-lab/4df4d43522718759f8245edd "><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1173914302" title="Des Moines" src="http://foursquare.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Des-Moines1.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="358" /></a></p>
<p>We were super impressed by this <a href="https://foursquare.com/hilaryhenak/list/visitus-in-des-moines-ia " target="_blank">Des Moines</a> city list made by <a href="https://foursquare.com/drakeuniversity " target="_blank">Drake University’s</a> Social Media Strategies Class. They joined forces to write a bunch of great tips, <a href="http://drakejournalism.com/socialclass/2012/01/27/help-des-moines-win-a-foursquare-badge/" target="_blank">got the word out</a>, and got over 250 followers. Their list features fairgrounds, zombie burger joints, delicious cornbread and more.</p>
<p><em><strong>Oklahoma City, Oklahoma</strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://foursquare.com/v/historic-stockyards-city/4c62f4ff79d1e21ee564d715  "><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1173914304" title="Oklahoma City" src="http://foursquare.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Oklahoma-City.jpg" alt="" width="328" height="449" /></a></p>
<p>One of the tips on this <a href="https://foursquare.com/travelok/list/oklahoma-citys-best--visitus?ref=tw " target="_blank">list</a> is: “Bone up on your skeletal knowledge at the Museum of Osteology.” Need we say more? This list, filled with gorgeous photos and lovely tips made us want to visit OK immediately. Bonus points for tweets from the <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/GovMaryFallin/status/164368270873473024 " target="_blank">governor</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/LtGovToddLamb/status/164812396475584513 " target="_blank">lieutenant governor</a>!</p>
<p><em><strong>Stamford, Connecticut</strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://foursquare.com/v/zaza-italian-gastrobar--pizzeria/4ddc4093d22df17198fb0fb9  "><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1173914305" title="Stamford" src="http://foursquare.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Stamford.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="339" /></a></p>
<p>No small efforts for this small town <a href="https://foursquare.com/de_klein/list/best-of-stamford-ct-visitus?ref=tw " target="_blank">list</a>. We were blown away by the amazing effort and twitter promotion by list-maker Dave K, one of the first people to submit his list. Great job on the retweet by your <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/StamfordDowntwn/status/162934935445975040 " target="_blank">congressman</a>!</p>
<p>Congratulations to our winners! It was extremely difficult to choose just five cities, and there are many reasons why other cities would have been great winners, too. Overall, we wanted to reward a variety of factors, from big efforts from small towns, to great tips and photos, to follower counts.</p>
<p><em><strong>But there were so many more we loved!</strong></em><br />
One of the best things about this contest was seeing all the <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/RVABadge/status/165537644070182913 " target="_blank">friendly competition</a>. <a href="https://foursquare.com/visitsavannah" target="_blank">Tourism boards</a>, government officials, and even <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Paula_Deen/status/165168969576230914  " target="_blank">Paula Deen</a> got in on the action!</p>
<p><a href="https://foursquare.com/allieharch/list/badge-of-brotherly-love-visitus " target="_blank">Philadelphia</a> (and <a href="https://foursquare.com/allieharch/list/geekadelphia-geekiest-places-in-philly-visitus " target="_blank">Geekadelphia</a>), <a href="https://foursquare.com/duhaimec/list/best-spots-in-minneapolis-mn " target="_blank">Minneapolis</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/user/12672875/list/mustsee-spots-in-bucks-county-pa-visitus " target="_blank">Bucks County</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/visitsavannah/list/best-spots-to-visit-in-savannah-visitus  " target="_blank">Savannah</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/ebrumley/list/visit-roswell-ga?ref=tw " target="_blank">Roswell</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/lakecountyoh/list/lake-county-oh--theres-more-to-explore-visitus " target="_blank">Lake County</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/4sqdaypdx/list/the-best-spots-in-portland-or-visitus " target="_blank">Portland</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/nico117/list/houston-we-support-local-grow-together--visitus " target="_blank">Houston</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/sunnychelly/list/milwaukees-best-spots " target="_blank">Milwaukee</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/bouchermedia/list/my-favorite-portsmouth-spots?ref=tw " target="_blank">Portsmouth</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/threefourteen15/list/duke-city-badge?ref=tw " target="_blank">Albuquerque</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/mary_mo/list/charleston-sc-visitus?ref=tw " target="_blank">Charleston</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/nico117/list/corpus-christi-bottom-of-the-map-visitus " target="_blank">Corpus Christi</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/user/1001533/list/detroit-list-visitus " target="_blank">Detroit</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/heychrisfox/list/cowtown " target="_blank">Fort Worth</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/buckfever/list/kansas-city-mo--a-great-place-to-be--visitus " target="_blank">Kansas City</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/memphiscvb/list/mindblowing-memphis-music " target="_blank">Memphis</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/dargavell/list/nashville-so-much-to-do-visitus?ref=tw " target="_blank">Nashville</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/abstractrandom/list/mustvisit-places-in-the-shoals-al-visitus?ref=tw " target="_blank">Shoals</a>, <a href="https://foursquare.com/hellzbellz05/list/best-places-to-visit-in-st-louis-mo--visitus?ref=tw" target="_blank">St. Louis</a> – you were all on the short list.
