When we first heard that Samsung would not be announcing the Galaxy S III in Barcelona, we knew the rumor mill would start flying. On the eve of the biggest show in mobile, BGR, who has been known to indulge in a rumor or two, claims to have information from a solid source about Samsung’s upcoming flagship 2012 device.

First up, the display. The Galaxy S III will reportedly take a more is more stance, with a super-sized 4.8″ Super AMOLED HD Plus display (likely a 1280 x 720 resolution similar to the Galaxy Nexus). The S III is also rumored to be touting a quad-core processor, likely its own quad-core Exynos 4412 chipset we were drooling over yesterday, which clocks in between 1.5-1.8 GHz on an ARM Cortex-A9 chipset. We could see something come out of left field, like the inclusion of the 5250 or 5450 Exynos chips, which are Samsun’s dual and quad-core (respectively) chips running on the greatly improved ARM Cortex-A15.

A rumor of the stranger variety is that BGR’s source claims the Galaxy S III will feature a ceramic backing instead of the plasticky textured backings we’ve grown accustomed to in Samsung’s smartphones. This rumor should be taken with a <del>grain</del> gallon of salt, as using a ceramic backing to the device would be an interesting design choice on Samsung’s part, to say the least.

Regardless, we likely won’t be hearing official details about the Galaxy S III until it’s officially unveiled closer to its launch date, which is rumored to be in the March/April timeframe. If BGR‘s final claim is accurate, the Galaxy S III will reportedly launch in 50 major markets simultaneously, which hopefully means that us folks over in the U.S. won’t have to wait a long time to get our hands on the next great Android smartphone.

Who else is excited to pick up a Galaxy S III later this year? I know my Galaxy S II is looking a little bit sadder this morning.

After their plans to take over T-Mobile USA were thwarted in the 11th hour by a $39 Billion bid from AT&T, Sprint was scratching its head as to what to do next. It announced a partnership with Lightsquared, though that deal is now doomed as Lightsquared has failed to gain FCC support of its next-generation mobile LTE network. Further, Sprint’s other network partner Clearwire is having fanatical troubles that put the company’s ability to provide the kind of coverage Sprint needs into serious doubt.

When it was announced that AT&T was not going to be allowed to acquire T-Mobile, rumors once again began to swirl about another possible takeover attempt. Yesterday, a takeover announcement came out of left field, with CNBC reporting that Sprint was a mere hours away from announcing an $8 Billion takeover of regional carrier MetroPCS when Sprint’s Board of Directors voted to reject the takeover, even after Sprint’s CEO Dan Hesse signed off on the arrangement.

Sprint and MetroPCS had apparently been negotiating the deal for quite some time, perhaps dating as far back as when Deutsche Telekom announced it was going with AT&T as T-Mobile’s suitor. While the MetroPCS deal would have presented Sprint the same issues it faced with a T-Mobile merger, namely, integration of MetroPCS’ AWS spectrum, the Board rejection of the takeover leaves us scratching our heads as to how Sprint will viably build out their LTE network.

Engadget is reporting that the board stated that the timing of the merger just “didn’t feel right,” which is hardly a sufficient enough explanation for us. Sprint has its work cut out for it as it hopes to build an LTE network to compete with juggernauts Verizon and AT&T, and with Plans A (LightSquared), B (Clearwire), C (T-Mobile), and D (MetroPCS) largely off the table, it appears Sprint is going to need to get creative if it is to remain competitive.

In an interesting piece on PandoDaily, Trevor Gilbert speculates that a board rejection of this magnitude could indicate that Sprint CEO Dan Hesse is on the way out. Generally, the Board of Directors appoints a CEO who they trust to make decisions about key business developments, who likely would have kept the Board updated on the status of the potential merger at their quarterly board meetings. Knowing the details as they progressed, you would assume the Board would have spoken up if they weren’t on board with the merger. Doing so loudly at the eleventh hour suggests that they either don’t like the way the deal ended up (the terms, etc.), or they don’t trust Dan Hesse to lead the way.

We’ll learn more in coming weeks. In the meantime, what do you guys think of all this? Personally, I love Dan Hesse and think it could be a mistake to let him go, though admittedly I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.

With less than 24 hours to go before the HTC one X and HTC One S are announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, an Italian retailer has released images, specs and pricing for the two Android 4.0 devices. Since we’ve seen so many leaks over the past few months, there are really no surprises, but we do believe that the retailer’s web guy did a poor job of posting the correct specs for the two phones.

The main mistakes we can spot is that both devices are listed with 4.7-inch displays along with 1GHz clock speeds for the dual-core processor in the Ville and quad-core processor in the Endeavor. We’ve made our fair share of mistakes over the years, so we’re willing to let this one slide. Based on what we know, the HTC Ville will feature a 4.3-inch display and both the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor in the Endeavor (One X) and the Qualcomm S4 processor in the Ville (One S) are expected to be clocked at 1.5 GHz.

The price of the HTC One X and HTC One S are listed at €699 and €599. A direct conversion to US dollars gives us a $940 price tag for the HTC One X and a $805 price tag for the HTC One S, but lets not forget that Italy has a 21% VAT already included in the price. Removing VAT, we’re left with slightly more reasonable price tags of $780 and $672 for the two devices.

How much are you willing to pay for one of HTC’s new Android 4.0 handsets?

“What exactly is a Micro App Store” I hear you cry. Well it’s pretty much as it sounds, an app store that brings you micro apps for your micro device, specifically the WIMM One Android watch. The WIMM One boasts a 667MHz ARM processor with 256MB RAM and 2GB internal storage. There’s bluetooth and wireless connectivity as well as an accelerometer, GPS module and compass on board. The micro device weighs only 22g and measures in at 32 x 36 x 12.5mm, despite the tiny dimensions it manages to cram in a 1.41″, 160 x 160 capacitive touch screen.

Impressive tech-specs are simply the first step to success, without top notch developer support the specifications may well count for nothing and that’s where the Micro App Store comes into play. Similar to the Android Market website, WIMM’s store pushes the selected app from the web directly to the WIMM One watch. At the time of posting there are around 25 applications ready for download with the promise of many more to come. There’s no infrastructure for paid apps just yet so perhaps it’s the ideal to time to fill your boots with some free apps.

It seems that the mobile device size wars go round in cycles. In the days of the Nokia 8310 it was all about being the smallest, then the original RAZR arrived on the scene and thin was in, now with the 4.65″ Galaxy Nexus and 5.3″ Galaxy Note hitting the headlines, the current trend is all about being the biggest. Is 2012 set to be the year when we arrive full circle as we see the rise of the tiny, smart watches? We had a false dawn in 2010 with the, innovative but flawed, Sony Ericsson LiveView but this year is set to be more promising with Motorola’s MotoActv, the stylish i’mWatch and Sony’s forthcoming SmartWatch all hitting the market.

Check out the link for full details on the WIMM Micro App Store and be sure to let us know if you’re planning on picking up a smart watch this year in the comments below.

Score one for the little guys. AT&T’s controversial “unlimited” data plan has made some noise in recent weeks. Since announcing they would begin reducing speeds for certain customers with the coveted unlimited data plan last year, it had since gotten an immense amount of criticism from many customers and even the media. After all, how can AT&T throttle data speeds for unlimited customers who pay <del>the exact same</del> a comparable amount to those who are on a tiered data (3GB/month) plan. Of course AT&T thinks its policies aren’t that bad, but one customer believes the policies are atrocious and had enough, so he decided to fight back.

AT&T customer Matt Spaccarelli decided to take action by taking AT&T to small claims court. He has the unlimited data plan and was being throttled by AT&T. He also contends his data speeds were being throttled, despite only using 1.5GB to 2GB of data per month and using by doing some thorough research, laid his claims and arguments before a judge arguing what AT&T is doing is wrong. AT&T countered by highlighting it is free to change the terms of its contracts or even end them outright, if it decided that the subscriber was causing adverse network usage. Judge Russell Nadel accepted the argument of Spaccarelli and granted him victory. Spaccarelli was awarded $850 which will go towards the remainder of his contract— or about $85 for 10 months.

Let this be a lesson for AT&T: customers aren’t happy and they’re willing to do something about your business practices. As an AT&T unlimited data customer myself and the victim of a threatening “text message warning” about my data usage, I can’t help but feel justice for all of us who are bullied by Ma Bell. Let’s hope it gets its act together, otherwise it will continue to lose support and ultimately customers.

I recently got a Samsung Galaxy Ace. I was wondering if any of these options in paying for an app in the Android Market were possible.

1) Charged on bill after buying app. (Then paying by “minutes” you’ve purchased or paying by credit card afterwards.)
2) An immediate purchase of app from “minutes” recently purchased. (Confirming purchase of app by phone or online payment from acount balance.)
3) Credit card purchase on Google Checkout or Google Wallet. (Which I’m not really sure if Google wallet and checkout are the same thing.)

FYI: I’m on a pay-as-you-go plan. Which I do realize is actually not a great way for having a smartphone on this kind of plan. Was told “these phones are better on contract”. I am a new-one with the smartphone and am fully aware of how they are worked. As I understand, smartphones are a open-source device that is capable of almost anything. I refer to the phones as “little-computers. So, I would really like to know how to pay for apps on the Android Market. Am signed up with a Google acount which I already had before getting this new phone, and I have full access to the Market. Just had to confirm my Google acount with my phone just to get access… Anyway, help!! Am curious on how everything works. Someone with experience tell me how this works.

Best answer:

Answer by Jethro Wantling
You would pay with paypal, or your credit card

Android: I’ve made it to Day 19 of my 30-day BlackBerry Torch Challenge. This week was unique because I took off work for most of it due to a personal emergency and I got to use the phone in ways that I hadn’t before. The difference this week was that I didn’t have the luxury of patience or being able to give the phone the benefit of the doubt as I’ve done in weeks past. This week, I really just needed it to work. While I was out and about, I brought an Android phone with me just in case the BlackBerry let me down. Well, it let me down. I was using Maps, navigation, internet, and a few apps. The Torch was slow and did not work well enough. Maps was laggy and took too long to refresh; web browsing was slow; the apps I needed were not available. So, I took out the Android phone I had brought and used it instead. The bottom line is that BlackBerry in its current state is not good enough to compete with other OSes like Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. There are a few areas where BlackBerry performs as well as those other OSes, but in most areas it’s not as good as them and there are no areas where it’s better. For me, I’m only going to use an OS if I think it’s better than my other options. That’s why I switched to Windows Phone – I felt it was better than Android and iOS in enough ways. I can’t see any areas where BlackBerry is better. I probably won’t use the Torch when my 30-day challenge is over, but I’m still in this for the long haul and I’m willing to stick it out. Things might … – by Android news.
