Last night a friend and I were headed out of the 116th Street station of the B/C, and a giant, cat-sized rat carrying a 10 inch long piece of bloody bone scurried in front of us. Upon our shocked exclamations, it dropped the huge, unidentifiable bone, and disappeared around the other side of the manned station agent booth. Everyone getting off the train was freaked out, and no one could figure out what type of bone it was.

A half an hour later, when we came to get back on the train, the bone was still there. We swiped in, attempting to get as far away from it as possible, in case the gigantic rat came back for it. But as we tried to head down the platform, we were deterred by two more rats running back and forth.   We ended up staying by the turnstiles so we could keep an eye on all angles.   A couple of minutes later, we saw the cat-sized rat come back for the bone.

The train came minutes later, but not before we saw three more rats on the tracks, and discussed the infestation with a few station regulars. They all asserted that the 116th Station is the worst, and has more rats than any other station, with the possible exception of the 135th street station on the same line.   As I’ve seen at least two rats every time I’ve been there (and often a couple at the top of the stairs to boot), I’m inclined to agree.

But we have to ask our readers: What subway station do you think is the rattiest? And moreover, what IS that 10 inch long bloody piece of bone pictured above?

2010 has turned out to be the summer of the bed bug, Just juding by the number of people that get to our site by typing “Does store X have bed bugs?” we can tell that everyone is worried about it, too.

Well, this probably won’t make you feel any better.

Bed Bug Registry is a public database that collects bed bug reports around the country. And while the rest of the country has bed bug problems of their own, we positively have an epidemic.

In other news, you’d think that bed bug fears would keep people away from old clothing and furniture, but think again, as vintage clothing and furniture stores are still going strong.

Remember how we told you that the Barnes and Noble on 66th and Broadway was closing at the end of January? Well, it’s going to be replaced, but not by  a Borders.

No, instead of a book store, Century 21 will be opening an uptown store in the location, something that makes the buidling’s owner, Millenium Partners, very happy:

“We have been searching for a tenant who has the ability to drive a large volume of shoppers to the area. We believe that having Century 21 as an anchor in Lincoln Square will help drive a level of pedestrian traffic that our other retail tenants will benefit from.”

Well, another heat wave is upon us. So while everyone outside continues to burst into flames, we thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone how to stay cool without breaking the bank on air conditioning.

Remember Staten Island? You know, the fifth borough, Shoalin, Staten Island Yankees? Well, they’ve been waiting for a subway to connect them to Brookyln or Manhattan for a long time. Like, a really, really long time.

Second Ave Sagas has an extraordinary post looking at plans to connect Staten Island to the rest of the city, including a 1912 plan to connect Staten Island to the Brooklyn BMT line (think of today’s R train line and you’ll get an idea) via a tunnel under the Narrows.

The plan was moving along with full steam, getting approval from the Mayor William Gaynor in July 1912.  But, as is the case with these types of things, ambition always outweighs practicality. Click the source link to read of that, and other sad Staten Island tales of woe.

This makes me super sad.

According to the City Room, the big Barnes and Noble on 66th street and Broadway on the Upper West Side will shutter its doors at the end of January.

The store is being shut due to high rents (no duh, it’s the middle of Manhattan.) The chain has been facing tough times recently, as it closed stores in Astor Place and Chelsea during the last three years.

Barnes and Noble put itself up for sale on August 3rd. Guess the Kindles and iPads of the world are causing bigger problems than we though.
