Here at The Gables Antiques, we love making antique items into lamps, as they give a room a one-of-a-kind look and an extra personal touch. On our buying trips, we always keep an eye out for anything that could make an interesting lamp. We also encourage our customers to select an item that they like and we can easily have it lamped.

Often times, furniture and accessories from one country are influenced in some way by style originating from other countries, and this is certainly true of Swedish antiques. Last week, we discussed the Gustavian style, which drew ideas and inspiration from French furniture styles like Louis XVI and Rococo. Today, we’re going to take a look at some additional influences on Swedish design that originate from Sweden’s southern neighbors.

A few examples that we have on hand here at The Gables Antiques are the Chinese Export Platters shown below. While most Europeans were importing rather traditional motifs, such as pagodas and willow trees, the Scandinavians turned toward flowers.

Another fine example are these very colorful majolica plates. These plates are very similar to those found in England (first photo) and France (second photo), while other types of faience show the same kind of similarity.

Below are some images that show items similar to the ones we’ve shown you today in Swedish interiors. These images are from the book The Swedish Room by Lars and Ursula Sjoberg with photography by Ingalill Snitt. Aren’t they gorgeous?!

Last week, we began a secondary spotlight series for the month with a feature on our beautiful collection of antique consoles. We have so many great photos to share with you that we had to split them up into two posts, so as we promised last week, we’ve got more to share with you today. Check them out!

This lovely decorative French iron console dates to 1880. It features a nice, exaggerated Louis XV style leg, as well as a deep apron, which adds some weight to the console. This beauty would look great in the entryway of a home!

This 19th century Regence style console from 1850 is an example of craftsmanship at its finest. Carved wood, shells, and acanthus leaves give this console an artistic quality, and the traditional French blue-green color, along with gilt highlights, make this freestanding console even more glamorous.

Here is another lovely Old French iron console. This one isn’t quite as old, as it dates back to 1940, but it is just a wonderful. The sculpted iron accents could easily work with most any decorative style – perfect for those who like to blend antiques with contemporary design! This one has a great marble top with warm shades of gold, brown, and rose.

Lastly, we have a 19th century painted French console that dates to 1880. This Louis XV style piece comes from Provence and has fantastic cabriole legs and detailed carvings. This console, also a freestanding piece, has a faux painted grey top, which allows the piece to be used in a variety of settings.

You can visit The Gables Antiques website to find dimensions and pricing on all of our wonderful consoles, or you can come check them out in person at our shop, located at 711 Miami Circle NE in Atlanta!
