In this edition of Throwbacks of Es, I chose one of my favorite rock songs, P.O.D.'s Youth Of The Nation. Before I go into why I chose this song, I have one question: WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT SOME P.O.D?!!! Nothing. Thought so. Lol Anyways, on a serious note I have two reasons for choosing this song.
First of all, it's just a really dope song, sonically. The melodies, the production, the last hook on this song-amazing. I just always loved listening to this song. Secondly, I know the country is finally taking the issue of bullying in school seriously. But even with school officials and the government intervening and taking serious action against those who bully others, bullying can still have a horrific effect on the person who suffering from the action. (Confession time) I was often bullied through the years in school for various reasons and I it took a toll on me. Not everyone is able to cope with being bullying well and able to overcome it. Some turn to sex, other to drugs, and unfortunately, some turn to suicide. We've seen the stories on the news about it and I even lost a friend to it.
Let me tell you a story of something that happened recently. A young kid in my church acted out and pretty much threw a large table at me while my one year old godson was standing right next to me. He was extremely angry and I knew it wasn't cause I was reprimanding him for not listening to instructions. I took him aside and was like, "So what exactly is your problem?" He started to cry. He said he was being bullied in school and never said anything about it therefore the anger was just built up inside of him and he acted out. I told him that he can't do that and that he needs to talk to someone about it because letting your emotions get the best of you could put him and others in great danger. I now text him during the week to make sure he's okay and let him know that if he needs someone to talk to, I'm always there for him.
Bullying is not something to take lightly. It's not something you can just get over. I know not a lot of young kids read my blog like that, so to my older people, help a young one if you can. Just be there for them and hear them out. It can make a huge difference. It could even save a life. I think Youth Of The Nation was somewhat ahead of it's time because it is so relevant to what is going on now. This song has a powerful message that's being told through the stories they tell. So everyone, watch the video, enjoy the music, and reflect. Love each other, and love yourself.

New mixtape from FL artist, Matt Villz titled, Lights Around The Mirror! It's his first official project ever and features fellow OLDxSOUL collective members, Will Effe and Royale. Also features productions from OxS's Woods, Rizon, and Villz himself. As I listen to this project, all I can say is-

"Oh shit!" I just got familiar with Matt Villz like a week ago when he dropped his song Wide Awake, so I obviously didn't know of ALL of his dopeness. And apparently the fact that he is a rapper, producer, AND a singer, just went right over my head. This guy is ill! He's like a trill Southern emcee, with two shots of Frank Ocean and a teaspoon of No I.D. stirred up together with OG kush smoke coming out of the cup. I am feeling this project to the max. I was pleasantly surprised by his talent. This dude has a future in this industry, a bright one at that. There are different themes and vibes throughout this 'tape but it all makes sense. As I was listening to LATM, I feel like I was spending a day with Villz. Like Villz Transition is when I first meet up with him in the morning and we talking over coffee. Then by the time we get to My Clique, we're with the rest of the OxS collective chillin' and shit. Finally, Wide Awake is when Villz opens up to where you able to see a deeper side to him. For a first project, this is solid. He is off to a dope start. But the next project gotta top LATM but with Matt Villz's talent, I'm sure it will. Check out the new EP from DREW! titled, TAPE! It includes 4 tracks which includes production from Phoenix, Toro y Moi, and Michael Uzowuru! Lana Del Rey x Complex: Ain't No Sunshine full story

My new obsession, singer/songwriter Lana Del Rey is the cover girl for Complex's Feb/March issue which also features A$AP Rocky x Jeremy Scott on the other cover. As much as I adore Rocky and JS, I refuse to post their cover because it's a played out copy of the famous Andy Warhol x Basiquat art show flyer. And it looks a lot like the artwork for Reese's Glory Lap featuring Casey Veggies that was done by Cherry Collab. Anywho, back to LDR.

I honestly just got hip to Lana and all her glory like a week ago. Her classic beauty caught my eye (no homo) but her music is what really does it for me. She has been described as a gangsta Nancy Sinatra and I love me some Nancy Sinatra. The best way I can describe her music is 1960's trill shit. Her voice has an older classic vibe to it but her lyrics are very raw and fresh. She's 25 years young and hails from NYC. Went to London for some time to focus on the music and then boom!, she blew up with the release her video, Video Games. This is really good article/interview on LDR. I knew a lot of people would hate on her before I even acutally caught wind of people doing it. She's not manufactured like many other artists-especially female artists. She's true and real. She's trill! I appreciate her for being her absolute self and not changing even with her new found fame. Maybe other artists can learn a thing or two from her. Her album, Born To Die is set to be out real soon! Gorgeous cover by the way! Love it!
