So much weird and wonderful kit has come out in 2012 and as self-confessed gear-junkies we want your thoughts and input!

Contenders so far include the:

- Klymit Inertia X-lite - a self-inflating sleeping mat the goes inside your sleeping bag, packs down to the size of a can of GoFast and weighs a mere 173g

-CAMP ball nuts - the smallest active protectionn in the world! These fantastically innovative bits of kit are for the truly slim and grim. Reintroduced after their initial incantation as Lowe Balls, these have become the secret weapon of many aid and trad climbers. These little wonders will work in small parallel-sided cracks where the only other option is pounding a piton. Ball Nuts also work in pin scars, quarry shot-holes and small flares where cams simply won’t fit. Since they weigh so little, many advanced trad climbers keep a #2 and #3 on their rack at all times. (Now in stock at GCC!)

The Rescue Emergency Care (REC) 2 day course covers all the basics of first aid and is suitable for keeping your skills fresh, or for an intro to first aid skills. Just £120 if you book online.

In a Nutshell: Banks between the road and the carpark added. Gates at top and bottom of the side access to the top. Removal of trees around the bottom of Access Route. Dowel inserts placed after stabilisation to prevent further loosening. Full details below:

North Lanarkshire Council is preparing to undertake essential repair works to climbing routes in
Auchinstarry Quarry.
The authority has had responsibility for the quarry and for the safety of its users and visitors since
1996 and conducts regular checks of the various routes.
The checking system is reviewed every five years. The most recent review identified a number of
issues in the quarry, relating in particular to the stability of parts of the promontory area.
As a result the area below the promontory was fenced off while we determined the best course of
remedial action.
After examining the preferences of quarry users and consulting with the Mountaineering Council of
Scotland; reviewing inspection findings; considering the legal position and exploring potential
options for addressing the issues, a contractor has been appointed and works will begin on 19
January.
The attached/enclosed plans show the works to be carried out, which include stabilisation works
on the quarry face.
The initial approach to stabilisation on the rock face will be removal of destabilising vegetation and
scaling of loosened rock that may fall from the rock face. Where unstable blocks are large, rock
dowelling will be carried out to avoid the need for removal. Other works will include the removal of
part of the drystane wall at the crest of the promontory area and the formation of a bund at the foot
of the promontory slopes.
Our intention is to make the quarry a safer place for all users. Doing so means temporarily
restricting access to the top of the promontory and the areas immediately beneath it for a period of
up to four weeks.

GCC will remain open for individual climbers for as long as we can deem it safe.

However we can make no guarantees that we will remain open all evening - please contact the centre diectly to confirm we are still open prior to commencing your journey.

If the centre does close early we will post notice immediately on our facebook page.

Winds are forecast to be at their highest between 1400 and 2100 so please bear this in mind if you intend to travel during this time frame.
