Book Review: Grumpy Darling by Alexandra Moody

When I first stumbled across Grumpy Darling, the second installment in Alexandra Moody’s Darling Devils series, I felt a familiar spark of excitement. The combination of first kisses, hockey, and a good old-fashioned slow-burn romance was like catnip for my book-loving heart. Alexandra’s previous work had left me enchanted, and I couldn’t resist diving back into her warm world of teen adventures.

Grumpy Darling centers on Paige, a high school senior who has ticked off everything on her bucket list—except for one monumental milestone: her first kiss. Enter Grayson Darling, the school hockey team’s notorious enforcer and Paige’s stubborn best friend, who has inadvertently scared off any potential suitors. In a twist of fate, Paige decides that rather than being protected, she wants Grayson to coach her dating life, embarking on a delightful journey filled with pining and self-discovery.

One of the most notable aspects of this novel is the dynamic between Paige and Grayson. Paige’s awkwardness and genuine vulnerability make her relatable, while Grayson’s grumpy exterior hides a heart of gold. Their slow-burn relationship is beautifully crafted, filled with moments where you might just squeal and cover your face in that delightful “I-can’t-handle-how-cute-this-is” way. The tension builds in such a skillful manner that I found myself holding my breath during pivotal scenes, eagerly waiting for their chemistry to ignite.

Alexandra’s writing style is effortlessly engaging. She possesses an uncanny ability to create vivid, relatable characters, and her prose flows with an easy charm that makes the pages turn all too quickly. I often found myself marking noteworthy quotes, like Grayson’s sweet yet exasperated musings about his feelings for Paige. One moment that particularly stood out was when Grayson, despite his tough exterior, softly reassures Paige that practicing for her big moment doesn’t reflect any inadequacy—it’s just part of growing up. That blend of humor, warmth, and sincerity encapsulated the book’s essence and resonated with my own experiences of young love.

But what truly enriched my reading experience was the exploration of friendship alongside romance. The camaraderie shared among the hockey team and the banter infused throughout the narrative added an extra layer of enjoyment. It reminded me of those carefree school days when friendships blossomed in the simplest of moments.

As I closed the book, a content smile spread across my face. Grumpy Darling is not just a tale of a first kiss; it’s a celebration of the beauty of friendships, the messiness of growing up, and the courage it takes to embrace your feelings. The joy, the laughter, and even the heart-fluttering moments make this an addictive read for fans of young adult fiction, romance enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates a good slow-burn narrative.

If you loved Rival Darling or are searching for a wholesome escape filled with lovable characters riding the highs and lows of teenage life, Grumpy Darling deserves a spot on your reading list. It’s a heartwarming reminder of how love can sneak up on you when you least expect it—a perfect blend of charm, humor, and endless swoon-worthy moments.

Book Review: No, We Can’t Be Friends by Sophie Ranald

From the moment I stumbled upon No, We Can’t Be Friends by Sophie Ranald, I was captivated. The whimsical tagline—“He was perfect. Denim blue eyes, a dazzling smile”—hooked me instantly, unfurling the promise of a delightful rollercoaster ride through romance, betrayal, and self-discovery. Having navigated my own fair share of less-than-ideal relationships, I felt a connection to Sloane, the novel’s relatable protagonist, and I couldn’t resist diving into her world.

Plot Overview

Sloane’s journey begins like a modern fairy tale: she meets Myles, who seems to be a dream come true. They share a love for martinis, four-cheese pizzas, and hearty laughter reminiscent of Friends. Yet, the story takes a riveting turn when secrets threaten to unravel what seemed like a blissful connection. As Sloane grapples with heartbreak, she eventually embarks on a transformative quest to rediscover herself—one that many readers will find relatable, poignant, and dare I say, essential.

The emotional depth Sophie explores isn’t just about romantic entanglements; it dives into the intricacies of self-worth and inner strength. Sloane’s evolution is both inspiring and educational, reminding us all of the importance of prioritizing ourselves, especially after heartbreak.

Writing Style and Pacing

Ranald’s writing style strikes a perfect balance between humor and seriousness. Her ability to weave in witty banter with authentic emotional moments keeps the pacing brisk, ensuring I was always turning the page. There are moments of laughter, such as Sloane’s escapades with ice cream—a beloved coping mechanism that resonated with me, as many of us have found solace at the bottom of a Ben & Jerry’s tub during hard times.

She encapsulates experiences through a lens that’s both distinctively British and universally relatable. As a reader, I could appreciate both the cultural nuances and the more universal themes of heartache and healing.

One quote that stood out for me came from Sloane’s inner dialogue: “Can I learn to love myself more than I loved the love of my life?” This perfectly encapsulates the heart of the story, prompting reflections on how often we give our all to others while neglecting our own needs.

Final Thoughts

No, We Can’t Be Friends is a gem for anyone who’s ever felt lost in the maze of love and self-identity. Whether you’re searching for a lighthearted read, seeking affirmation after a breakup, or just want to indulge in relatable characters, this book has something for everyone. After flipping through its pages, I found myself with a renewed sense of empowerment, reminded that healing is both a journey and a destination.

So, if you’re in the mood for a story that resonates with the whirls of modern romance while elegantly highlighting the importance of self-love, I wholeheartedly recommend giving Sophie Ranald’s book a read. You won’t just enjoy the journey—you may just find the courage to embark on your own.

Book Review: The Full Nest by Fiona Gibson

There’s something irresistibly refreshing about stumbling upon a book that perfectly captures the chaotic joy of family life, and The Full Nest by Fiona Gibson does just that. As a fan of romantic comedies, I was drawn in by the premise — a bustling family home that refuses to empty out, even when you think it might be time for a little peace and quiet. With a blend of humor, heart, and heartfelt honesty, Gibson has crafted a relatable narrative that felt like a warm hug amidst the clamor of everyday life.

The story centers around Carly, whose dream of an empty nest quickly evaporates when her elderly father needs a place to stay “temporarily.” Add to that her adult son Eddie, who, instead of spreading his wings, decides home is comfortably good enough — much to Carly’s exasperation. Suddenly, her home isn’t just full of memories; it’s bursting at the seams with chaos, laughter, and the very relatable struggles of caregiving. It’s a scenario many of us can connect with, especially as the ever-unfolding dynamics of family life unfurl on the pages.

Gibson’s writing style shines like a beacon of warmth, effortlessly blending humor with poignant moments that tug at the heartstrings. The pacing is just right, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the chaos but also pause to reflect on the deeper themes of love, growing up, and what it truly means to support one another — all wrapped in a delightful dose of wit. I found myself both laughing out loud and sighing in recognition as Carly navigated the complexities of her family’s interactions.

One passage really resonated with me, where Carly reflects on the fleeting nature of her children’s childhoods, capturing a blend of nostalgia and the bittersweet reality of growing up. It was a reminder that while parenting can be exhausting, the moments of pure joy and connection make it ultimately worthwhile. Many reader reviews echo this sentiment, with one noting, “Fiona Gibson always brings funny to her stories. Something special.” It’s this blend of relatability and humor that makes Gibson’s novels resonate deeply.

As I turned the final pages, I felt a sense of closure mixed with anticipation — not just for Carly’s journey, but for my own life transitions. I believe The Full Nest will appeal to anyone navigating the waters of family life, caregivers, or simply those who appreciate a lighthearted yet profound story. It’s a reminder that amidst the din of life, love and humor are there to be found, even when our nests overflow. If you’re looking for a book that reflects the delightful messiness of family dynamics while keeping you chuckling and contemplative, then look no further. Fiona Gibson has delivered a gem that I’m sure will resonate widely in 2025 and beyond.

Some Like It Cold: A Sleeping Beauty with Ice-Cold Hearts

I’ve been a devoted fan of Elle McNicoll’s middle-grade novels, reveling in her ability to craft characters that feel like friends. When I learned she was venturing into the realm of young adult romance with Some Like It Cold, I was equal parts excited and apprehensive. Would her signature sparkle translate well into the world of teenage angst and romantic tension? Spoiler alert: the journey was more chilly than cozy, and I found myself walking away with a 2.5-star rating nestled in my heart.

Set in the dismal yet fantastical Lake Pristine, the narrative introduces us to Jasper, a neurodivergent young woman returning home for the festive season. Unfortunately, what should have been a celebratory time quickly devolves into an exploration of familial and societal cruelty. Lake Pristine is a far cry from the welcoming small-town life one might expect, fully embodying the title’s sinister implication. Rather than warmth, I was met with icy glares and backhanded remarks, leaving me baffled by the town’s collective bitterness.

Jasper’s return is marked by the sudden announcement of her sister’s New Year’s Eve wedding—a twist that serves as a catalyst for conflicts that feel both poignant and, at times, exhausting. As I turned the pages, the dialogue felt oddly formal, almost like each character was wary of revealing too much, even while being openly vicious towards one another. It left me yearning for more genuine connection, especially from Jasper, whose interactions often felt stilted.

Despite my reservations about the interpersonal conflicts, the slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance between Jasper and her childhood rival Arthur Lancaster—affectionately dubbed “Grumble”—offered a refreshing ray of warmth amid the chilly surroundings. Their chemistry felt authentic, layered with banter and moments of genuine tenderness. Arthur, the brooding cinema manager with dreams of keeping his father’s legacy alive, emerged as the jewel of the story, a figure of empathy amidst the cold-hearted chaos of Lake Pristine.

One poignant quote struck me: “To be loved so well for exactly who you are, after being told you are unlovable: it was a beautiful, golden act of revolution.” This encapsulated much of Jasper’s struggle as she navigates her self-worth in a town that seems to take joy in tearing her down. It was a reminder of the importance of unconditional love and the powerful emotions tied to accepting oneself—a theme that resonated deeply with me.

While McNicoll’s thoughtful representation of neurodivergence is commendable, I wished the narrative had balanced it more gracefully with its other elements. The focus on Jasper’s neurodivergent experience sometimes veered into territory that felt almost burdensome, overshadowing other rich plot aspects. I found myself wishing for a more nuanced approach that didn’t require constant re-explanation of her struggles, which occasionally took away from the unfolding drama.

In conclusion, Some Like It Cold is a mixed bag of heartfelt moments and exhausting interactions, reflective of the complexities of familial dynamics and self-discovery. Fans of McNicoll might find it a departure from her previous works, but those who enjoy stories laden with family drama and a slow-burn romance may be drawn to Jasper and Arthur’s evolving relationship. While my heart felt heavy for most of this read, I appreciate how it pushed the boundaries of understanding and compassion, even amidst the harshness. For readers intrigued by intense emotional landscapes, this might just be a worth-it venture into the cold.

So, who might enjoy this book? If you’re ready to brave a wintery town of unkind characters, coupled with a beautiful exploration of love and belonging—Some Like It Cold might warm you up, albeit just a little.

Honest Reflections on The Lies That Bind by Emily Giffin

When I first picked up The Lies That Bind by Emily Giffin, I was both intrigued and a little hesitant. As a long-time admirer of her work, I wondered how this novel would compare to her earlier bestsellers like Something Borrowed and All We Ever Wanted. The premise—a young woman caught in a whirlwind romance that takes a tragic turn—felt timely, especially reflecting on the emotional weight of 9/11. Little did I know, I was in for an emotional rollercoaster that would leave me both heartbroken and hopeful.

At its core, The Lies That Bind is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and the intricacies of our human connections. The story centers around Cecily Gardner, a young reporter grappling with her past and her uncertain future, who finds herself in a serendipitous encounter with Grant one fateful night. Their chemistry is electric, but their connection is complicated by timing and life circumstances—a theme that resonated deeply with me. As Cecily embarks on her relationship with Grant, I found myself rooting for her to embrace love without the shackles of fear and doubt.

Giffin’s writing shines in its ability to capture the nuances of relationships and the bittersweet nature of life. The narrative flows seamlessly, mirroring the highs and lows of Cecily’s journey. I found myself laughing at the humorous moments and tearing up during the more heartfelt ones. The pacing, while occasionally brisk, felt intentional as if to reflect the chaotic nature of both love and the world around us.

One particularly striking quote that lingered with me was when Cecily acknowledges, "Sometimes, the truth is the biggest lie of all." This idea of identity and perceptions—how we view ourselves versus how others see us—is thoroughly explored through Grant’s character, making us question the very fabric of our connections. The emotional depth Giffin brings to her characters adds layers to the narrative, sparking reflection on the lies we tell ourselves and others.

There are moments when Cecily can be undeniably flawed and even frustrating, which can alienate some readers. Yet, it’s that very human struggle that makes her relatable. Much like Giffin’s fans shared in their reviews, I too appreciated the realism of Cecily’s choices, navigating heartbreak and hope amidst very real anxieties that mirror our own lives.

I can see The Lies That Bind resonating deeply with anyone who appreciates a good love story wrapped in life’s complexities. It’s a perfect read for those who enjoy character-driven narratives with emotional punch. Giffin invites us to confront uncomfortable truths about love and remembrance that linger long after the last page is turned.

In closing, this book left me reflecting on my own relationships and the truths I hold dear. While The Lies That Bind may not be Giffin’s most light-hearted offering, it underscores an important message: love, as messy and complicated as it is, is still worth pursuing. So if you’re looking to embark on an emotional journey that provokes thought and stirs the heart, I wholeheartedly recommend giving this gem a read.

Book Review: Battle of the Bookstores by Ali Brady

When I first laid eyes on Battle of the Bookstores, the latest release from Ali Brady, I have to admit I felt an immediate pull. Given my love for books that capture the spirit of indie bookstores and the charming chaos of human relationships, I was eager to dive in. Special thanks to Tyler at Berkley Publishing for continually introducing me to such delightful titles! However, I must be upfront: the book had a rocky start for me. The initial chapters, filled with acronyms and phrases that didn’t quite resonate, gave me pause. But oh, how glad I am that I persevered!

As the story unfolded, I found myself completely enraptured. The narrative centers on Josie and Ryan, two charming booksellers whose lives are at stake due to the ruthless business dealings of their boss, Xander. With both stores competing for sales, the stakes are high: one must win while the other faces closure. This cutthroat competition, juxtaposed with the rich tapestry of heartfelt emotions, drew me in deeper, leaving me rooting for both characters.

What truly enchanted me was the evolution of Josie, our fierce female protagonist. Raised in a challenging environment, she embodies resilience and warmth, having taken on a motherly role for her sister. Her struggles with trusting others deeply resonated with me, adding layers to her character that were beautifully unpacked by Brady. And then there’s Ryan—a character I initially struggled to pin down. Tall, broad-shouldered, and somehow both Clark Kent and an effervescent romance enthusiast, he won me over with his sweetness and articulate nature. The author weaved in humor beautifully, with online exchanges that had me laughing out loud, reminiscent of You’ve Got Mail.

One aspect that gave me pause was the somewhat cringe-worthy name of a side character—Cinderella. Seriously? I found myself giggling yet cringing at the same time. But as I moved beyond that, I appreciated the pacing of the story, which skillfully tackled sensitive themes such as childhood trauma and personal insecurities, while still maintaining a delightful tone.

Brady’s writing style is engaging and approachable, enabling me to become immersed in Josie and Ryan’s journey. Their chemistry built delicately and authentically, evoking an emotional investment that surprised me. By the end, I was misty-eyed and clutching my heart, yearning for their happy ending.

Battle of the Bookstores is a love letter to readers who appreciate a good epistolary romance with laugh-out-loud moments entwined with deeper, relatable themes. If you’re a fan of cozy romances filled with witty banter and a dash of emotional depth, this book is for you. I can’t recommend it highly enough, especially for anyone who enjoys a slow-burn romance set against the backdrop of the cozy, whimsical world of bookstores.

Mark your calendars for its release on June 3, 2025! I know I’ll be keeping an eye out for more gems from Ali Brady in the future.

Happy reading, friends!

Book Review: Call Your Boyfriend by Kate Bromley

There’s something delightful about diving into a book that explores the tumultuous path of first loves, heartache, and quirky friendships. Call Your Boyfriend by Kate Bromley caught my eye with its premise: “A girlfriendless misfit teaching another girlfriendless misfit how to reel in the prom queen.” Intrigued? So was I!

From the very first scene, where Beau—our spirited and somewhat chaotic heroine—arrives at a party clutching a pair of panties, I knew I was in for a journey filled with laughter and heart. Beau’s encounter with Maia, the girl she’s been longing to have a candid conversation with, sets off a whirlwind of emotions that had me both chuckling and cringing. When Beau witnesses Maia sharing a kiss with someone else, it becomes clear that both girls are entangled in a web of misunderstandings and unrequited feelings. I loved how Bromley manages to mix humor with genuine heartache, making it relatable and deeply absorbing.

One of the book’s strongest elements is its exploration of love and self-worth. Both Beau and Charm—who decides to join forces with Beau to scheme against Maia—grapple with their own insecurities and parental issues. I found myself reflecting on their pasts, particularly Beau’s struggle with being the secret crush of straight girls, and Charm’s battle against an ex-girlfriend’s harsh judgments. As they’re thrust together in their plan to “woo” and subsequently dump Maia, their bond grows, showcasing a beautiful transformation from intent-driven collaboration to heartfelt connection.

Bromley’s writing style is engaging, balancing laugh-out-loud moments with tender introspection. The pacing was brisk, keeping the momentum alive as we follow Beau and Charm through their flirtation lessons. As a fan of romantic comedies, I particularly enjoyed the lighthearted banter combined with the profound realizations both characters experience. One memorable quote that struck a chord with me was when Beau mused about the complexities of love and friendship—it served as a poignant reminder that our expectations can often get in the way of what truly matters.

The supporting characters, especially Ezra and Celine, further enrich the narrative, adding depth to the themes of insecurity and personal growth. Their arcs illustrate that no character is simply a backdrop in this story; everyone has a struggle that adds to the tapestry of teenage life and love.

In essence, Call Your Boyfriend is a delightful sapphic romcom that deftly navigates the trials of young love while addressing topics like acceptance and the intricacies of LGBTQ+ relationships. It’s a book for anyone who enjoys rooting for the underdog, facing the awkwardness of youth, or simply wants a charming escape into a world where love, friendship, and self-acceptance reign supreme.

So, if you’re on the lookout for a story that encapsulates the messiness of growing up, all while serving humor and wisdom in equal measure, this book should definitely find a place on your shelf. I walked away feeling a little lighter and a lot more hopeful about the beauty of connections, both romantic and platonic. Thanks to Simon Teen for the eARC—I can’t wait to share this joy with fellow readers!

Book Review: The Santa Suit by Mary Kay Andrews

As the holiday season approaches, I find myself gravitating towards narratives that evoke warmth and the spirit of togetherness. Mary Kay Andrews’ The Santa Suit caught my eye not just because of its festive title but also due to the promise of second chances and magical discoveries. Having followed Andrews’ impressive career, I was eager to see how she would weave a tale of hope amid the bustle of Christmas.

At its heart, The Santa Suit follows Ivy Perkins, a newly-divorced woman seeking a fresh start in a rundown farmhouse she impulsively purchased, sight unseen. This charmingly named residence, The Four Roses, becomes a symbol of Ivy’s quest for renewal. What resonates powerfully throughout the novella is Ivy’s journey of self-discovery as she sifts through not only the physical remnants left behind by the previous owners but also the emotional baggage of her past.

The narrative is beautifully crafted, blending elements of nostalgia with the allure of mystery. As Ivy uncovers an old Santa suit tucked away in a closet, she also finds a poignant note from a little girl wishing for her father to return from war. This simple yet profound discovery ignites a quest that leads Ivy not just to unearth the secrets of the Rose family but also to forge connections within the quaint community she now inhabits. The themes of friendship, compassion, and the enduring magic of Christmas are delicately interwoven, making it a feast of heartfelt moments.

Andrews’ writing style offers a perfect blend of warmth and clarity. Each character is vividly drawn, making you feel as if you’re part of Ivy’s journey. The pacing allows for a cozy read, one that leaves you wanting to linger over each page, like sipping hot cocoa by thefireplace. One particular line that struck me was, “In December, all things are possible,” which resonates so deeply during a season when we crave miracles and meaning.

Many readers have echoed similar sentiments about the book’s ability to uplift the spirit. One review mentioned how it’s a story that highlights “friendship” and “kindness,” ultimately reminding us that even in tough times, new beginnings can bring unexpected joy. It’s this universal truth embedded in the narrative that keeps us turning the pages, hungry for more.

The Santa Suit is an ideal read for anyone searching for a heartwarming escape this holiday season, especially readers looking for stories filled with hope and discovery. Andrews has curated a delightful tale that is perfect for curling up with a warm blanket and a cup of tea while snowflakes dance outside your window.

In conclusion, this novella may become a cherished addition to your seasonal reading list, one that you’ll want to revisit year after year. It left me with a renewed sense of hope and a reminder that, much like Ivy, we all have the power to write new chapters in our lives. Grab a copy, settle in, and let the magic of the season unfold through Ivy’s eyes. You won’t regret it!

Book Review: The Exchange (London Prep, #1) by Jillian Dodd

As an avid reader of young adult fiction, I can’t help but be captivated by the vibrant, emotional landscapes painted by Jillian Dodd. Known as the undisputed queen of YA stories, Dodd has once again struck gold with The Exchange (London Prep, #1). When I first glimpsed the premise—an American girl navigating the complexities of British school life amidst the throes of teenage angst—I was immediately drawn in. Little did I know, this story would not only entertain but also resonate with my own youthful confusions about love, friendship, and finding one’s place in a new world.

The journey begins with Mallory, who is reluctantly sent to London for a three-week homestay and school experience. I felt a deep connection to her initial trepidation about leaving home, a sentiment all too familiar for anyone who has faced new adventures. However, as soon as she arrives at the welcoming Williams family home, her reservations start to melt away, and so began my own pleasure at watching her blossom. The warmth and acceptance of her hosts provide a perfect backdrop that amplifies the unfolding drama.

Enter Harry and Noah—the dualities of teenage romance in full splendor. Harry, the charming and flirtatious boy with an effortless swagger, pulls Mallory into a whirlwind of casual romance and undeniable attraction. Meanwhile, Noah, her brooding homestay brother, offers a different flavor of intrigue. It’s a classic love-triangle setup, yet Dodd manages to imbue it with freshness through vibrant character development and witty dialogue that kept me chuckling while blushing at the relatable yet cringe-worthy moments of Mallory’s journey.

What truly stood out for me was Dodd’s knack for pacing. In a mere week, Mallory finds herself swept into a tangled web of friendships, rivalries, and budding relationships, each scene layered with the complexities of teenage emotions and social dynamics. The author has an uncanny ability to capture those fleeting moments—like the awkwardness of yoga classes turning unexpectedly physical, or the tension between Mallory and Harry amidst jealous exes—that kept me turning pages long into the night.

Dodd’s writing flows seamlessly, filled with humor and a vivid sense of place. I could practically smell the London pubs and feel the thrill of navigating the halls of Kensington School. One standout moment that made me laugh out loud was when Mallory’s "resting bitch face" came out of retirement during an encounter with Olivia, Harry’s spiteful ex. In those jarring encounters, I recognized the sharpness of high school rivalries that somehow can twist the most mundane scenarios into scenes of sheer drama.

As I soaked in every delightful twist and climax, I couldn’t help but root for Mallory, hoping she would find clarity amidst her emotional chaos. For someone who has ever felt out of place or yearned for connection, this story is a reminder of how exhilarating—and terrifying—it can be to navigate new territories.

The Exchange (London Prep, #1) is a book for anyone who relishes a touch of romance woven with humor and heart. If you enjoyed the likes of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and are looking for a fresh perspective on teenage romance, this should be your next read. Dodd’s storytelling will not just entertain you; it will leave you eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Mallory’s journey. I certainly can’t wait to dive back into this addictive world and discover where Mallory’s heart leads her next!
