DIY Perfume Recipes

So you've decided to make your own perfume! After making thousands of them myself, I'd like to share with you a few of my favorite essential oil perfume recipes. We'll also go over a few common tweaks that I like to do to really make them stand out. We'll start with a few of the classics of perfumery, then move into some of the more common notes that people like to start with.

Each recipe is based on a ratio of 100 parts so that it can be easily converted to the ration that you would like to use for your fragrance. Whether you're measuring it out in mL or using drops as your measure. 100 drops in a 100 mL fragrance will give you a 5% Eau De Toilette. If you are to double that to 200 drops, it would give you a 10% solution. There are 20 drops in a mL. Using drops is the easiest way to measure your scents, but more exact measurements are better.

You'll want to give every fragrance a resting period of 2-6 weeks to let it come into it's own.

All fragrances should be mixed with alcohol.

A wonderfully rich fragrance that can add a bit of sensual depth to your perfume, I use patchouli a lot to give my scents that extra bit of complexity when I feel they're missing something. It's great as a small addition to a fragrance, or can carry a scent as it's main component.

Floral Patchouli Recipe

A basic floral scent with patchouli at the heart. I use Himalayan Cedar for this as it brightens it up, but you can try Texas or Atlas Cedar as well. Jasmine can be switched out for Ylang-Ylang if you'd like a slightly more animalistic floral.

20 Himalayan Cedar

25 Dark Patchouli

10 Lavender

10 Ylang-Ylang

Hippie Patchouli Recipe

Patchouli has a bit of an association with the hippie movement of the 60's, this recipe takes that and runs with it.

5 Vetiver

20 Dark Patchouli

10 Black Pepper

10 Clary Sage

10 Pine

10 Basil

10 Lavender

10 Spearmint

5 Basil

After trying this out you can add more vetiver/patchouli to increase it's smokey hipster vibe, or add a citrus top to brighten it up.

Vanilla Perfume Recipes Essential Oils

The great equalizer, I use vanilla in a lot of my recipes to help bridge the gap between heavier base notes and light top notes. It does a great job of rounding out the heart of your scent. For these recipes make sure that you get a vanilla absolute, it has a much more full flavor then vanillin and is made without synthetics. Beware it can be a bit pricey though.

You can also play around and add vanilla to any of the other recipes on this page to get a more 'grounded' scent.

A nice and simple vanilla recipe that you can use as an accord on it's own. You'll find it to be light and bright, you can add florals, woods, or spices to it as it's quite versatile.

25 Vanilla Absolute

35 Himalayan Cedar

40 Bergamot

I find that especially using the vanilla absolute, you'll have to let this one rest for a week before the vanilla really comes into it's own.

This is quite versatile, you can swap out any of the florals to suit your tastes.

20 Vanilla Absolute

15 Sandalwood

5 Myrrh

10 Patchouli

10 Jasmine Absolute

10 Ylang-Ylang

20 Bergamot

10 Neroli

To play around with this recipe you can try substituting any of the florals (although beware of geranium as it has a habit of taking over a fragrance if you use too much), bergamot can also be changed out for a simpler sweet orange, or the sandalwood for a brighter himalayan cedar.

This is a simple yet beautiful scent that can be made to fit with florals or citrus.

This can easily be turned into a floral or citrus scent by adding either.

Basic Vanilla Recipe

A nice and simple vanilla recipe that you can use as an accord on it's own. You'll find it to be light and bright, you can add florals, woods, or spices to it as it's quite versatile.

25 Vanilla Absolute

35 Himalayan Cedar

40 Bergamot

I find that especially using the vanilla absolute, you'll have to let this one rest for a week before the vanilla really comes into it's own.

Each recipe is based on a ratio of 100 parts. Divide or multiply according to your needs.

A simple accord that is popular among DIY'ers for it's simplicity, but also can stand alone as a basic fragrance

40 Vanilla Absolute

60 Lavender

Each recipe is based on a ratio of 100 parts. Divide or multiply according to your needs.

Simple Vanilla Floral Recipe

This is quite versatile, you can swap out any of the florals to suit your tastes.

20 Vanilla Absolute

15 Sandalwood

5 Myrrh

10 Patchouli

10 Jasmine Absolute

10 Ylang-Ylang

20 Bergamot

10 Neroli

To play around with this recipe you can try substituting any of the florals (although beware of geranium as it has a habit of taking over a fragrance if you use too much), bergamot can also be changed out for a simpler sweet orange, or the sandalwood for a brighter himalayan cedar.

Each recipe is based on a ratio of 100 parts. Divide or multiply according to your needs.

Sandalwood Accord

This is a simple yet beautiful scent that can be made to fit with florals or citrus.

60 Sandalwood

40 Vanilla Absolute

This can easily be turned into a floral or citrus scent by adding either.

Each recipe is based on a ratio of 100 parts. Divide or multiply according to your needs.

Below you’ll find a list of essential oils that can give you’re beard that extra little kick.

Make a beard oil on-line using our on-line beard oil builder.

Bergamot: Our Bergamot is a cold pressed oil, this means that it’s made by grinding the fruit with heavy duty presses, keeping the delicate oil below 49 Celsius to prevent damage. Bergamot is commonly used in perfumery as a top note, and is great as a beard oil because it has antibacterial and antiseptic properties.

Cedar wood: One of my favourite notes in creating scents for men. Beyond being one of the manliest fragrances, it also in aromatherapy is known for having a calming scentCedarwood is an awesome essential oil that goes all the way back to biblical times and earlier.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a heady scent, a perfect base for evenings…and something to get you through the winter, warming you up from the inside out. Cinnamon is also great for summer evenings as in it’s natural oil it’s rumoured to keep the mosquitoes away. This base note has calming properties and will give you an air of tranquility.

Clove: Cloves have been used for making fragrances since ancient times, but had fallen out of favour until the recent surge of interest in beard oils. It has never fallen out of favour with the aromatherapy crowd where it’s been used to keep away everything from spirits, viruses, and even old age. This is a spicy and powerful scent.

Eucalyptus: Great for giving an extra kick to the top end of every scent, Eucalyptus is used quite commonly in beard oils as it not only smells great, but can do wonders for your skin and beard.

Lavender: When you’re manly enough to use a beard oil, it doesn’t hurt to have a little softness to your scent. Lavender is used extensively in all of our scents, but also has a ton of usages in aromatherapy including calming, pain relief, treatment for some respiratory issues, and is beneficial for your skin.

Lemon: Lemon has a ton of other health benefits, but is really beneficial for beards in it’s detoxifying aspect. It’s a great top note to round out a lot of scents.

Click Here To Start Making Your Own Beard Oil On-line.

Peppermint: This will make you feel alive! Having that scent under your nose gives you the perfect pep to start the day, and that cool peppermint feel on your skin isn’t something to shake a stick at either. As a natural stimulant, Peppermint is thought to stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss. There is a reason it’s in so many hair products.

Pine: Pine gives a slightly softer wood scent than something like Cedar, and is a great mid note for any beard oil. It also naturally prevents itchiness, which is something every beard oil needs.

Patchouli: Rich, Spicy, Sweet, Slightly Musky…Patchouli has it all! Because it has so much going in in it’s individual bouquet Patchouli lends itself extremely well with most other notes. Patchouli oil is also thought to prevent wrinkles and keep your skin looking healthy.

Rosemary: This can be a bit of a tricky one (just like Thyme), as it can easily overpower a scent. That being said, if you are a fan of Thyme it’s well known to help grow hair faster and thicker…as well as providing a mental boost throughout the day.

Sage: One of the most widely used scents in aromatherapy, sage has a lot going for it in terms of helping you have a healthy beard. It’s also known to keep bad spirits away, and who wants those?Sandalwood: Of the woods on this list, Sandalwood falls in the middle of the road between Pine (being a softer scent) and Cedar (Smelling like you just finished chopping down a third of a forest). It’s been a cornerstone of aromatherapy and perfumery for many years, and will continue to do so as it’s an amazing scent. It also has a host of other benefits for your beard from anti-septic, anti-fungal, benefitting growth, and has even been proven to help the body heal other areas faster through the power of aromatherapy.

Thyme: This can be a bit of a tricky one, as it can easily overpower a scent. That being said, if you are a fan of Thyme it’s well known to help grow hair faster and thicker.

Vanilla: I use Vanilla a lot to round out scents and it can really help bridge the gap between a heavier base like Sandalwood/Cedar and a lighter top note like citrus. This is probably my most used note in most beard oils and it hasn’t failed me yet.

Make Your Own Beard Oil

Click Here To Start Making Your Own Beard Oil On-line.

For a list of current patchouli perfumes, scroll past our brief history.

Patchouli is one of the most divisive scents in perfumery as it’s very unique, making it quite distinguishable within a scent. It was first unveiled to western culture as a very secretive additive to oriental fabrics, where it had been used for as a moth repellent for decades. This industry trick led to Europeans associating the smell of patchouli with genuine quality products and therefore quality. In the early 1800’s with the industrial revolution in full swing, European textile manufacturing was producing massive quantities of fairly decent quality fabrics. There was only one problem, they couldn’t replicate the smell of genuine oriental fabrics. The smell of patchouli had become synonymous with that of quality. It wasn’t until 1837 that a spanish friar and botanist named Francisco Manuel Blanco figured out the cause of this alluring scent, Patchouli! This led to large scale importation of the fragrant oil as European manufacturers used the scent to give the appearance of quality.

Patchouli in the 1900’s

Patchouli stayed in the realm of fabrics until 1932 when Jean Carles (known for using unusual materials) created Tabu. He had a specific mandate when making this scent in that it was specifically to be made for a ‘lady of the night’ (un parfum de puta). He used the exotic and sensual natures to do just that and created an industry changing scent that is used to define that decade.
Patchouli perfume remained on the fringes of fragrance until it was adopted by the counter culture movement of the 1960’s/70’s, and it was this fringe status that allowed it to explode in popularity. People involved in the movement wore it because it was a new thing that signified that they were different. It smelled like nature, earthy, musky, and rich…not something you would be able to get at your regular department store. There was a certain sense of rebellion to it, you dressed differently and now you could smell different as well. It was in this era that patchouli gained a bit of a bad rap as it was often used quite liberally and undiluted, giving it an overpowering scent.

The 80’s were a quieter time for patchouli fragrances, but the scent maintained widespread use with the help of heady and sensual fragrances like Yves Saint Laurent’s Oriental Spicy fragrance ‘Opium'(1977). Towards the end of the decade patchouli had a big boost in the public consciousness in the form of Madonna’s 1989 record ‘Like a prayer’. The record was released with the scent of patchouli imbued into the packaging. This was done with the intent of reminding people of the free spirit of the 60’s.

Just like most fashion, patchouli’s popularity cycle runs in 20 year cycles. It’s currently in the middle of one of these cycles and most major fragrance labels carry at least one patchouli perfume.

In typical Tom Ford fashion it features a wood base with hints of incense and patchouli. This base is thickened through the middle with a light musk then lifted with some of the heavier florals in Rose and Jasmine. The top note of lime really serves to punch and brighten the patchouli base, with some light florals and coriander rounding it out.

Rollerball vs. Spray

Rollerballs are a unique perfume delivery system that allows you to apply scents with extreme precision to your pulse points. They are more accurate than sprays, but you won’t be able to get quite as much diffusion, this means that a scent applied with a rollerball will tend to have less sillage but will typically last longer than one sprayed on.

Another advantage of rollerballs is that you are able to apply it discreetly without affecting your neighbours, so it is perfect for reapplication of scents in an office atmosphere.

How to Apply Rollerball Perfume

Using a rollerball perfume is easier than a sprayer in some ways as the delivery system is much more precise with a slower rate of flow. One disadvantage of using a rollerball is that it isn’t the best on clothes, so when using one I like to focus on 6 pulse points that are normally exposed. You can apply to one or all of them depending on your needs.

Temples: This is a great place to apply a stress relief style rollerball with peppermint, eucalyptus, or lavender. Apply to temples and feel the stress melt away.

Behind Ears/Neck: Behind the ears is the best place to create some sense of sillage if you’re constantly on the move. You’ll be able to create a small wake with your scent.

Collar Bones: My favorite spot for a date night, you’ll be able to bring someone closer with that alluring scent.

Elbows: A great pulse point for work if you have to wash your hands, or you find you’re getting too much sillage with your wrist.

Wrists: One of the classics, your arms are constantly moving which creates a sense of movement in your fragrance.

Behind Knees: Not used very often, but I’m fond of it as the scent isn’t immediately attributable to you. A very muted and understated application.

In traditional perfumery there are three types of notes, each having defining characteristics. There are Top Notes, Mid Notes, and Base Notes. We like to start every scent off with the base notes as they last the longest. Picking a good base note helps to anchor your scent. After you choose your first base note, you will be able to choose your mid notes and top notes.

Tobacco has a delicious aroma that goes especially well with Leather, Vanilla, and Musk. Legitimately mind boggling. It also blends well with Woods, Heavy Florals, and Citrus.

Vanilla has as much tenacity as any other base note, but it has the unique ability to help bring base and top notes together. If you don’t use Vanilla as a base, try it as a mid note. Vanilla is extremely versatile, so if you’re a fan of the scent try it with anything. Works well with Citrus, Florals, Musks, Herbs, and Woods.
