With this technology, the Kindle only uses battery power when you turn the page (just a quick burst is required to rearrange the e-ink on the page). If you're not turning the page, you're not using power. You can read a whole book easily with a single charge.

Also, as far as being an avid reader...huh? Isn't it easier to carry around a single book-sized device than multiple heavy books? Isn't it easier to be able to download a book instantly wherever you are instead of going to a bookstore? Isn't it better to pay $9.99 for a book than $19.99? Isn't it nice to have a built-in dictionary, highlighter, Wikipedia, and voice reader? Oh yeah, and you can read all your magazines, newspapers, and blogs on the Kindle as well. Anybody that actually is an avid reader would appreciate these things.

One more thing, the e-ink technology makes reading the Kindle virtually identical to reading a paper book. There's no backlight, so it's not like reading a computer screen. So, it's pretty much a superior form of reading in all regards.

I think the energy used to create a book, the pape...

I think the energy used to create a book, the paper, and transportation greatly outweighs the use of electricity to read a book on a kindle.

I question your being an "avid reader" a...

I question your being an "avid reader" as most of them would shun the Kindle. The flora and fauna was beautiful, and the locals I met were so passionate about preserving the ecology of the region. I think eco-tourism is my favorite type of tourism, or maybe just behind culinary tourism (chianti and chinghiale in Tuscany is hard to beat).

Last thought...yeah, there's just no way to be a "green" if you're flying halfway around the world. After my wife and I went to Italy last year, we decided to limit our trips to the Western hemisphere, preferably on this side of the equator. This leaves North America, Central America, and the Caribbean as our vacation destinations. Glad to...

Allison,

Thanks for stopping by the blog. Glad to hear another green thinker is moving to Hattiesburg. Yes it is true that there is no glass recycling in the area and that all other recyclables have to be driven to drop off locations.

To be honest, I never made it in front of the city council, but I have done a bit of research. Until recently none of the recycling centers had the capability to process glass. I've heard that one of the larger recyclers wants to implement a glass recycling process, but likely won't commit unless he is going to get support from local governments, who are going through severe budget cuts.

You may or may not have heard that until the recent downturn municipalities could actually get revenue from recycling programs. That is not the case today. The bottom has dropped out of the scrap materials market and this is not good news for local recycling programs. The economy will turn and I think concerned citizens should continue insisting on these programs.

As for what to do with all that glass. Here are a couple options:

1.A friend of mine saves her multi colored wine bottles and then brakes them up and puts them into some of her flower beds. Looks very cool.

2.You will soon learn that Hattiesburg has HORRIBLE grocery stores. No lie, 3 Super Walmarts in the area. Because of this you will likely be taking trips to Jackson or New Orleans for some of your food. You could save your glass and take it with you I suppose.

Again, I'm glad you stopped by and welcome to Mississippi.

Hi Matt,

I stumbled upon this blog several weeks ...

Hi Matt,

I stumbled upon this blog several weeks ago when searching for glass recycling options in Hattiesburg (of which I don't see ANY!). My husband and I are about to relocate to Hattiesburg from Columbia, SC (he'll be working at USM) and we do our best to live green every day!

We were pretty disappointed in the lack of recycling options in Hattiesburg! We have curbside recycling here in Columbia (which accepts brown, green and clear glass). We don't mind having to take our recyclables somewhere (although a curbside program would encourage the lazy folks to recycle!) but we are perplexed about what to do with our glass!

The idea of throwing it away makes us shudder! I can't remember the last time I threw away a glass bottle! I jokingly suggested that we'll have to switch to wine in a box and beer in a can! :(

I noticed you had mentioned going before the city council about offering glass recycling. What can others do to help? Do you feel like Hattiesburg is ANY closer to a curbside program?

I enjoy the blog! Thanks for doing your part! I leave the motel at 6:45 a.m., get back to the hotel at 6:00 a.m., eat dinner, meet with my grad school team at 7:00 about every night until 9:00 or so, talk to the wife, prepare reports for the next day of work, take a shower if I'm lucky, and go to bed. I do occasionally get to watch either the Daily Show or the Colbert Report, but usually not both. Sighhh. Okay, enough whining.

I could probably find enough time to blog if I had something to blog about. I really haven't come across anything green-related recently that has inspired me to blog. I r...

Haven't we screwed with Mother Nature enough? I really don't like this idea for a number of reasons. For one, if we indeed began geoengineering the climate we would have to continue to do so indefinitely. Maybe it works in the short run to cool the planet, but no one has the foresight to know what the far-reaching consequences of us deliberately screwing with nature's climate patterns will be. Second, this could curb the drive to reduce carbon emissions if it's looked at as an insurance policy (which it surely will be viewed as such by some). Third, the possibility of weaponizing geoengineering is entirely too real for my taste. Imagine our enemies with the capability to directly and intentionally affect our country's weather. That might sound far fetched to some, but look what happened after we developed the atomic/nuclear weapons. Rather destroy them and ban their creation after witnessing their destructive power, the world raced to build as many as possible. Fourth, scientists these days seem to have absolutely no moral restrictions on their work. Just two years ago, brain cells were successfully fused to computer chips. Anyone can see the inherent danger in that. The science world is so caught up with whether or not they can, they never stop to think if they should. There are boundaries that do not need to be crossed, and in my eye deliberately creating technology with the intention of playing God with the weather is one of those boundaries. I'm completely against this idea is the main bullet point of this presentation.

Interesting and oh so true post Mike and nice comm...

Interesting and oh so true post Mike and nice comments Pat.
