Read the transcript below.

Welcome to Good Dirt Radio, reporting on positive change… taking root.

Washington power broker, Henry Kissinger said, “He who controls the food supply, controls the people.” And a handful of global food corporations at the top of the food chain are increasingly doing both, while damaging the food supply and the biosphere. Today’s biotech giants are saturating worldwide markets with genetically engineered, or genetically modified food products. They patent and own most of the seeds used in the largest crops worldwide, seeds engineered to be pesticide resistant and produce sterile plants. Millions of farmers are forced to re-purchase seeds each year. The ramifications are profound.

Genetically engineered foods like soy, corn, sugar, potatoes and oils are found in 75% of the US food supply and studies show they are linked to health conditions including cancer, immune dysfunction, infertility and accelerated aging. Despite being outlawed in Europe and around the world, a few multinational corporations still pump GE foods through American supermarkets. [ca-ching, ca-ching].

Alexis Baden Mayer is Political Director for the national Organic Consumers Association, or OCA, fighting to stop DNA altered foods. As a passionate activist- attorney fighting to get global Ag out of local food, she fills in some important blanks on the hows and whys of GE food products.

Baden Mayer: Genetic engineering is a process through which the DNA of an organism is manipulated in a way that could not occur in nature. The genes in engineered plants are highly transmutable. They come from bacteria and they easily transfer from the plants into the bacteria of the soil and into weeds and other life forms. This is damaging the ecology of the soil and its creating huge problems for farmers because super weeds are destroying their crops and really lowering their yield.

The counterpart of GE seeds and plants is glyphosphate. One formula using glyphosphate is sold under the name Roundup and is known to damage human and animal cells and most non GE plants. Pushed on farmers through aggressive, monopolistic practices, the USDA and FDA are fed pre-scripted legislation by corporations who hide the facts from the public.

Baden Mayer: Most of the genetically engineered crops grown in the United Statestoday are engineered to withstand massive doses of Roundup. There’s never been an agricultural chemical that’s been more used on planet Earth than Roundup and that’s because of the successful business mode of genetically engineering crops. We know that GMOs are linked to cancer, creating an epidemic of allergies and decreasing the nutrition in our food. And we are very much more susceptible to all forms of disease because of that.

Baden Mayer says while many people don’t yet know about GMOs, most wouldn’t eat them if they did know. Thanks to non-profit groups like the OCA and Green America, a critical mass of people are rising to stop the proliferation of GE products in our food chain, including the perils of GE salmon, also being sold to unsuspecting consumers by biotech companies.

Baden Mayer: GE salmon is dangerous for consumers and its going to produce a salmon that’s far less nutritious than even the factory farmed salmon today. It is inevitable that they will contaminate wild populations through breeding and then wild salmon will lose its nutrition, become contaminated and carcinogenic to humans.

Around the globe, thousands of new ‘freedom zones’ are declaring GMOs illegal in their jurisdictions. In the emerging national food fight, grassroots organizations are promoting local, healthy food and legislation that requires truth-in-labeling. A growing number of states are also moving to protect shoppers from GMOs by requiring disclosure and labeling – despite being opposed by powerful corporate PR campaigns.

Baden Mayer: The only way you can avoid GMOs in the grocery store is to look for the organic label. Foods labeled USDA Organic and made with organic are completely GMO free. Consumer awareness of GMOs is reaching a high point and we have an opportunity to pass state legislation to label GMO foods. So, educate your families, educate your friends. Please contact your state legislators. When everyone knows, 90 percent of us can not be beat.

For more about the effects of GMOs on our entire chain of life, please visit us at gooddirtradio.org.

Shoppers avoiding GE Genetically engineered foods help protect themselves, the biosphere and climate. Every dollar spent at the market, is a vote. It pays to buy organic.

I’m Tom Bartels and I’m Tami Graham. Thanks for joining us on Good Dirt Radio, digging up good news…. for a change.

“In green marketing, companies take environmental, employee, and consumer factors into consideration throughout the product cycle,” explains Schappert, CEO of The BIOS Organization LLC., parent company of THE GOOD WORD and The Green Marketing Company. “Once a company or organization takes those steps, the final outcome is better all around — better for the company, better for the community, better for planet, and better for the bottom line.”

With a no-nonsense, back-to-basics approach, Schappert has developed a unique ability to break down complex concepts into simple, easily understood ideas that make sense to audiences of all ages.

“I developed this ability while overcoming a traumatic brain injury,” says Schappert. “I now learn slowly but deeply, and it forces me to break everything down into base elements, which are easy to convey to others. Once you do that, life becomes easier, and business makes more sense.”

Steve created The Green Marketing Company last August when he combined his passion for the environment with his marketing skills. Projects like GreenFest, The BIOS WaterCar, and THE GOOD WORD have brought Schappert worldwide recognition. THE GOOD WORD has registered blogs for every town in CT, every state in the country and for 50 countries around the world.

“It’s a privilege to be sharing the stage with outstanding speakers and world-renowned marketing professionals at Eafit University’s international conference,” says Schappert. Conamerc 2012 gives participants opportunities to know and live new trends in marketing. Other speakers include Mark Ross-Innes from 2E2, a major UK company specializing in customer relations management software; Carolina Rogoll, responsible for brand building for Proctor and Gamble; and Eduardo Sebriano, general manager for one of the most influential marketing groups in Argentina.

“I have done quite a bit of teaching and public speaking over the last four years,” says Schappert, “Yet, on an international scale, this conference will be a highlight. It reminds me of how small this world is and how we can all come together to make something good happen.”

In addition to initiating and developing THE GOOD WORD and The Green Marketing Company in the last few years, Schappert has taught energy conservation to grades 3-6 at Barkhemsted Elementary School in Barkhemsted, Connecticut; environmental science to grades 7-9 at the Sound School in New Haven,Connecticut; sustainable business practices at Gateway College in North Haven, Connecticut; green building at the 2007 National Real Estate convention, sponsored by the National Association of Buyer Agents in Las Vegas; and advances in science education for a masters level class in elementary education at Yale Peabody.

Read transcript below.

On the shortlist of major causes that affect the stability of the biosphere, factory food systems are very near the top. Proponents of the return to organic food, claim that big ‘Ag’s current energy andpetro-chemical intensive systems are toxic and too centralized. Petroleum based industrial agriculture is a major contributor to climate change and damages air, water, soil, anda rapidly growing number of species. But the good news here is the expanding movement across the US to clean upour mainstream food supply by going local and organic.

We spoke with Alexis Baden-Mayer, Political Director and Editor for Organic Consumers Association, a national advocacy group with hundreds of thousands of members. In Washington, DC, she lobbies for strong organic food standards as well as cleaner agricultural and environmental standards. She explains the roles of current systems in climate change.

Baden-Mayer: Industrial agriculture is responsible for between 44 and 57% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Part of that are the agriculture activities, especially growing food with chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers that are derived from natural gas. And the other big contributor is the fact that we keep animals in factory farms and we’re basically stockpiling their waste, which is a terrible source of methane gasses. Another piece is the food processing, packaging and transportation and the last piece related to our food system is our organic waste. We let it rot in landfills and that contributes as much as 4% to greenhouse gas emissions.

Baden-Mayor says organic agriculture provides major global solutions and that by eating organic, locally grown and transported foods, consumers can help change the course of climate history.

Baden Mayor: Going organic is the answer to climate change. If we go to local, organic agriculture, not only can we can eliminate the 57% of global greenhouse gas emissions that are related to our industrial ag food systems, but we can sequester 40% of current global greenhouse gas emissions. So, if everyone converted just 10% of their diet to organic, we could capture an additional 6.5 billion pounds of carbon in the soil. That’s the same as taking 2 million cars off the road.

The Rodale Institute in S.E. Pennsylvania has been educating people fordecadesabout their research on the positive effects that organic farming can have on the environment as well as our personal health. Jeff Moyer, Rodale’s Farm Director, describes howorganic agriculture sequesters carbon from the atmosphere.

Moyer: The reason carbon can be sequestered so easily, in organic systems, is because we’re working with the soil. Treating the soil as a living, breathing set of organisms that are physically active and very dynamic and can work in our favor in terms of sequestering carbon. In a conventionally farmed system, when chemically based nitrogen fertilizer is used, it’s a little bit like dumping gasoline on something flammable like wood and it just burns it up, almost instantaneously, and sends it right back into the atmosphere, so you’re not really sequestering it. But in organic systems, that doesn’t happen.

Moyer explains that living, breathing fungi and other microbes absorb carbon and other nutrients, enriching the soil. He says there are multiple benefits to switching to organic food systems.

Moyer: We can protect our ground-water, we can improve our surface water because we no longer have all these chemicals, nitrogen, phosphorus, in terms of fertilizer, and all the other agricultural herbicides and insecticides getting into our environment. So we’re improving our environment and helping to mitigate some of the problems we have with climate change. But the real emphasis is on the quality of the food and our own personal health and there’s no reason for us to not start down that path on a much larger scale than we’re doing today.

Baden-Mayer: To think about how our world can be impacted by climate can be incredibly de-spiriting but to know that the solution lies right in what we do every day, with every choice we make about what food to eat, we can be part of the solution. Locally grown, organic agriculture not only reduces and eliminates emissions related to our industrial food system, but it can sequester an enormous amount of current greenhouse gas pollution.

Please visit gooddirtradio.org for more on eating organic and locally and look for the USDA Certified Organic label in your shift… to renewable living.

Personal health is the microcosm of global health and as they say…wearewhat we eat. Organic living is a powerful way everyonecan help reverse a climate crisis.

When researching the economic effect of bottle water I found this. I was absolutely amazed at how much oil bottled water consumed. As Americans it seems like we are getting lazier. As this happens industries have been trying harder to make things more convenient for us. Usually when this happens it takes more packaging or materials, which also mean more oil is used to make this possible. This also means…

In researching, and looking for the plant that will give you the most “bang for your buck”, I came to a web-site that gave me the following information.

“Even in huge, busy cities, outdoor air is cleaner and preferable to indoor air. Why is that? One reason is that trees and plants are constantly cleaning the air outside. This suggests that the eco-minded homeowner or office dweller should go out and buy some plants – but which ones? With all the hype of “going green”, every plant on the market is being promoted as an air purifier!
