When it comes to President Obama’s plan to bring thousands of Syrian refugees into the country, critics have largely restricted their concerns to those of national security. Because of Syria’s war-torn nature, it is difficult – if not impossible – to properly vet these refugees for Islamic terrorists who might sneak through the pipeline. And at a time when ISIS is looking high and low for new opportunities to launch bloody attacks on the West, it is irresponsible to put innocent Americans in mortal danger just so Obama can play Savior of the World.

But Syrian refugees make up only a tiny fraction of the total number of asylum-seekers who relocate to the United States every year, and national security is only one aspect of the problem.

According to a new report from Negative Population Growth, Inc., the U.S. is currently spending $19,884 of taxpayer money on each and every refugee that comes across the border. Since our country welcomes some 95,000 refugees a year, we’re on the hook for about $1.8 billion annually. Some of this money goes to agencies helping to relocate refugees, but the majority of it goes straight to the United Nations.

Jihadist Murders Two In Paris Suburb

Less than 48 hours after the horrifying Islamic terrorist attack in Orlando, a jihadist named Larossi Abballa carried out a much smaller – if no less coldblooded – attack in a French village 35 miles outside of Paris.

Abballa, 25, murdered police commissioner Jean-Baptiste Salvaing and his wife Jessica at their Magnanville home on Monday night. He then holed up inside the house, where he livestreamed video of his slaughter to Facebook and deliberated over what to do to the couple’s three-year-old son.

During this siege, Abballa reportedly told likeminded viewers to follow his example and attack “police officers, prison guards, journalists, and rappers.”

Around midnight, police stormed the home, killed Abballa, and rescued the boy.

While the FBI has been on the receiving end of some well-deserved criticism here at home – Orlando killer Omar Mateen had been under investigation for terrorist threats for nearly a year – the criticism being thrown at French law enforcement agencies could be even sharper.

It turns out that Abballa wasn’t just known to French authorities, he had already been convicted for aiding and abetting a group of Islamic extremists in 2013. Despite this conviction, he was released immediately following his trial for time served. According to French officials, he was placed under surveillance for the next two years.

Twenty-three hours into the St. Paul police investigation of the second and third homicides of 2016, Senior Cmdr. Tina McNamara leaned forward in her chair, a silk scarf around her neck, a phone pressed to her ear.

“We booked two for murder today and we’re about to book the third,” said McNamara, head of the homicide unit, “and he’s the baddest of the bad.”

The time was 8:37 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23. McNamara and her team of five homicide investigators had been awake for about 40 hours, having worked a regular shift and then reconvening when the bodies of Dominique Charles Moss, 23, and Nicholas Bennett Tousley, 30, were discovered about 9:33 p.m. the previous night.

The investigation unfolded over the course of a day, several cups of coffee and multiple interviews with witnesses who lied, cried and doubled down in hopes of saving their own skin. The process has repeated itself an average of 13 times annually for the dozen members of the unit over the past five years, and eight times so far this year.

Early on, police knew this: A group of men converged at St. Paul’s Midway Motel on N. Snelling Avenue, where drugs were allegedly being sold. In minutes, two of them were dead — one collapsing a few feet from Room 15 and the other sprawled on the edge of a nearby off-ramp, where he succumbed to a gunshot wound to the back. But the identities of the men killed — and the people responsible — were unknown.

Investigators caught a break when they recovered surveillance video from a camera pointed at Room 15. Unlike so many others, this camera’s footage was clear.

It showed men arriving, shots being fired, men pushing and shoving their way out of the room and the alleged getaway car — a dark-colored Lexus. One of the men involved wore clothing with a distinctive pattern — a long-sleeved shirt with a diagonal black stripe.

“It’s very rare to have this quality of video — very rare,” McNamara said at police headquarters shortly after midnight on March 23. “This is a fast-moving one.”

Fast, but methodical. Investigators sifted through information from more than 20 witnesses, tracked people down by their nicknames and watched under cover of darkness as suspects sat at home, unaware of the net slowly closing around them.

Witnesses lined a long hallway leading to the homicide office on the second floor of police headquarters shortly after the shooting: two good Samaritans who stopped to perform CPR on Tousley, men possibly connected to Room 15 and motel guests who had the misfortune of renting a room there that night.

Four homicide investigators — Sgt. Tom Arnold, Sgt. Amy Boyer, Sgt. Tim Pinoniemi and Sgt. Eric Skog — sat around a long table in the center of the office, divvying up duties and witnesses. Back at the crime scene, homicide investigator Sgt. Shawn Shanley and others continued documenting and collecting evidence.

“What’d you get?” McNamara asked as Arnold stepped out of a witness interview room.

“Nothin,’ ” said the white-haired, broad-shouldered Arnold. “Said he heard a gunshot, then heard another gunshot.”

Even in the midst of a double homicide case, investigators fielded other calls — a likely drug overdose death that they would also have to investigate, a possible development in an unsolved murder from 2015.

“We could go two days without these guys going home — three days,” McNamara said about 1 a.m.

Skog sat in a corner listening to 911 calls as he drafted a search warrant affidavit that would later be hand-delivered to a judge’s home in the middle of the night to be signed. Boyer interviewed a man who stopped to help Tousley. Afterward, police drove him home.

The investigation seemed to gain traction when Pinoniemi, the lead investigator, began interviewing a man who possibly knew the shooter’s identity.

“I’d say we’re ahead of the game,” McNamara said as she coordinated and oversaw the different parts of the investigation.

A minute after her hopeful declaration — 1:13 a.m. — Pinoniemi left his interview deflated: “He didn’t see the shooting.”

Arnold delivered more bad news: A friend of one of the victims hadn’t seen the shooter, either.

Video clues

By 2 a.m., investigators were no closer to the shooter. The answer, they were sure, was in that surveillance video. When Shanley arrived with it, they crowded the table and looked with rapt attention at a TV monitor hanging from the ceiling.

“Two, three, four, five people go in and it starts right away,” McNamara said, narrating the video. “Who do we think was in the room to begin with?”

They paused the video on some men walking near the motel room — an image they’d returned to repeatedly. If they could just get to one of them.

Hours from daybreak, several media calls prompted police spokesmen Sgt. Mike Ernster and Steve Linders to hold a 4 a.m. news conference even though much of the case remained a series of half-clues.

Twelve minutes after the press briefing, Shanley announced a key development: “They’re sitting on one of our guys.” he said.

A witness had identified the driver of the Lexus as someone named Eric and provided his possible address. The department’s special investigations unit traced a black Lexus to an Eric Benner at the address and surrounded it with undercover officers in unmarked cars.

Benner, 30, sat on the porch; it unnerved McNamara.

“Why’s he on the porch when it’s cold out?” she asked. “He has to know we’re lookin’. Tom, do you think he’s alive on the porch? Did he move?”

“I heard he’s a terrible alcoholic,” Arnold answered. “Maybe he’s passed out on the porch.”

At 4:51 a.m., police moved in. They were one step closer to the triggerman.

‘So damn close’

Investigators questioned witnesses one-on-one, leaving small interview rooms to debrief their colleagues, strategize and compare notes, and to give witnesses time alone to think and reconsider.

Some, like Benner, were loose-lipped. Others required a tag-team effort with two investigators. One tried to play the system in his favor, withholding information as a bargaining chip.

Soon after he arrived at headquarters, Benner told investigators a man named Nick, the victim found on the off-ramp from Snelling to Pierce Butler Route, had allegedly stolen $1,000 from his friend, Ronald Conway. Benner admitted to driving Conway, 30, and other men in the surveillance video to the Midway Motel so Conway could collect the debt.

Benner was booked at 9:37 a.m. for his role in the crime. Authorities allege in criminal charges that Conway and his associates hid outside and converged on Room 15 after Benner knocked on the door.

Within the hour, Conway was sitting across from Pinoniemi in one of those interview rooms. They had tracked him down through his cellphone’s location.

“He keeps saying he wants a deal,” Pinoniemi briefed his colleagues an hour into the interview. “He says he didn’t have anything to do with it.”

Investigators decided to try their luck; they weren’t ready to give him any deals. But the news wasn’t hopeful when McNamara asked, around noon, if he’d bagged a confession.

“No, and so damn close, too,” Pinoniemi said. “He keeps saying he wasn’t there. He keeps saying, ‘Who did it? Who did it?’ He doesn’t want to go to jail.”

During a brief and rare break for lunch, Arnold returned from the medical examiner’s office: Each man had been shot once in the back — straight through — and neither bullet was found at the crime scene. Both had been officially identified.

Conway lawyered up soon afterward, ending the police interview, but not before dropping an important clue.

“ ‘Black’ did it,” Pinoniemi recalled Conway saying.

“Who’s ‘Black’?” Arnold asked.

“Dunno,” Pinoniemi replied.

Swift climax

Just when it seemed like investigators had lost their best lead, they got notice at 2:08 p.m.: Conway was about to be booked at the county jail when he said he wanted to meet with Pinoniemi again. The investigator pounced.

“So, he says he doesn’t know Black’s name, but Black’s number is in his phone under Black,” Pinoniemi told McNamara about 2:26 p.m.

Cross-referencing information from Facebook and other records, investigators tracked down Black’s true identity — 31-year-old Cass Cordell Oneal. Photos from the social media site and the motel’s surveillance video showed him wearing the same long-sleeved shirt with a diagonal black stripe.

Officers in unmarked cars watched the apartment of Oneal’s sister as his phone was tracked. At 6:22 p.m., the SWAT team left headquarters. Hours of investigative work had led them to a nondescript building in the 1300 block of White Bear Avenue. They were outfitted and prepared for the worst, but the climax was swift, the moment barely perceptible to passersby on the street.

“Number one is in custody,” a voice called out over the police radio at 6:32 p.m.

By 7:11 p.m., Oneal was being pressed by Pinoniemi at headquarters. The homicide office hummed with subdued excitement as evidence from the apartment arrived.

“Hey, they got it!” an officer called out at 7:52 p.m. “They got the gun!”

McNamara and Pinoniemi high-fived in a rare and brief moment of celebration. The distinctive shirt had been recovered from the apartment, too. It wouldn’t take two or three days to catch the alleged killer — just a little under one.

“It’s the teamwork,” McNamara said. “We work well together. We never gave up.”

Breaking a case is all-consuming, and the pressure and work don’t stop just because a suspect is behind bars. Arnold awoke at home Friday, March 25, lost in the fog of homicide.

“When I woke up this morning, [my wife] came out with a card and a gift, and I didn’t know what it was for,” Arnold said. “And I thought, maybe, it was for Easter.”

It was for his 21st wedding anniversary.

“I’m in huge trouble.”

Does the Quran really contain over a hundred verses promoting violence?

The Quran contains at least 109 verses that call Muslims to war with nonbelievers for the sake of Islamic rule. Some are quite graphic, with commands to chop off heads and fingers and kill infidels wherever they may be hiding. Muslims who do not join the fight are called 'hypocrites' and warned that Allah will send them to Hell if they do not join the slaughter.

Quran (2:191-193) - "And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah [disbelief or unrest] is worse than killing...
but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah [disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah] and worship is for Allah alone. But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun(the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.)" (Translation is from the Noble Quran) The verse prior to this (190) refers to "fighting for the cause of Allah those who fight you" leading some to believe that the entire passage refers to a defensive war in which Muslims are defending their homes and families. The historical context of this passage is not defensive warfare, however, since Muhammad and his Muslims had just relocated to Medina and were not under attack by their Meccan adversaries. In fact, the verses urge offensive warfare, in that Muslims are to drive Meccans out of their own city (which they later did). Verse 190 thus means to fight those who offer resistance to Allah's rule (ie. Muslim conquest). The use of the word "persecution" by some Muslim translators is disingenuous (the actual Arabic words for persecution - "idtihad" - and oppression - a variation of "z-l-m" - do not appear in the verse). The word used instead, "fitna", can mean disbelief, or the disorder that results from unbelief or temptation. This is certainly what is meant in this context since the violence is explicitly commissioned "until religion is for Allah" - ie. unbelievers desist in their unbelief.

50 slain in gay nightclub, worst mass shooting in US history

ORLANDO, Fla. — A gunman wielding an assault-type rifle and a handgun opened fire inside a crowded gay nightclub early Sunday, killing at least 50 people before dying in a gunfight with SWAT officers, police said. It was the deadliest mass shooting in American history.

Authorities were investigating the attack on the Florida dance hall as an act of terrorism. The gunman's father recalled that his son recently got angry when he saw two men kissing in Miami and said that might be related to the assault.

At least 53 people were hospitalized, most in critical condition, officials said. A surgeon at Orlando Regional Medical Center said the death toll was likely to climb.

Mayor Buddy Dyer said all of the dead were killed with the assault rifle.

"There's blood everywhere," Dyer said.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene when the gunfire began shortly before the club known as Pulse was to close.

"Some guy walked in and started shooting everybody. He had an automatic rifle, so nobody stood a chance," said Jackie Smith, who had two friends next to her get shot. "I just tried to get out of there."

The suspect exchanged gunfire with a police officer working at the club, which had more than 300 people inside. The gunman then went back inside and took hostages, Police Chief John Mina said.

Around 5 a.m., authorities sent in a SWAT team to rescue the hostages.

Authorities were looking into whether the attack was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter acted alone, according to Danny Banks, an agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

"This is an incident, as I see it, that we certainly classify as domestic terror incident," Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said.

The previous deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. was the 2007 attack at Virginia Tech, where a student killed 32 people before killing himself.

The suspect in the Orlando attack was identified as Omar Mateen of Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Rep. Alan Grayson named the shooter, citing law enforcement officials. A federal law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation also confirmed the name. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Mateen's father, Mir Seddique, told NBC News about his son seeing the men kissing a couple of months ago.

"We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident," Seddique said. "We are in shock like the whole country."

FBI agent Ron Hopper said there was no further threat to Orlando or the surrounding area.

When asked if the gunman had a connection to radical Islamic terrorism, Hopper said authorities had "suggestions that individual has leanings towards that."

Mateen's father said the attack had nothing to do with religion, he said.

In addition to the guns, the shooter also had some sort of "suspicious device," the police chief said.

Authorities said they had secured the suspect's vehicle, a van, outside the club.

A SWAT truck and a bomb-disposal unit were on the scene of an address associated with Mateen in a residential neighborhood of Fort Pierce, Florida, about 118 miles southeast of Orlando.

Relatives and friends, many in tears, gathered outside the hospital to learn the fate of loved ones.

Smith did not know the conditions of her friends and came out of the hospital and burst into tears.

Christine Leinonen drove to Orlando at 4 a.m. after learning of the shooting from a friend of her 32-year-old son, Christopher Leinonen, who was at Pulse and is missing.

She has not heard from her son and fears the worse.

"These are nonsensical killings of our children," she said, sobbing. "They're killing our babies!"

She said her son's friend Brandon Wolf survived by hiding in a bathroom and running out as the bullets flew.

A woman who was outside the club early Sunday was trying to contact her 30-year-old son, Eddie, who texted her when the shooting happened and asked her to call police. He told her he ran into a bathroom with other club patrons to hide. He then texted her: "He's coming."

"The next text said: 'He has us, and he's in here with us,'" Mina Justice said. "That was the last conversation."

Pulse posted on its own Facebook page around 2 a.m.: "Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running." Just before 6 a.m., the club posted an update: "As soon as we have any information, we will update everyone. Please keep everyone in your prayers as we work through this tragic event. Thank you for your thoughts and love."

President Barack Obama was briefed on the attack and asked for regular updates on the investigation, the White House said.

Jon Alamo said he was at the back of one of the club's rooms when a man holding a weapon came into the front of the room.

"I heard 20, 40, 50 shots," Alamo said. "The music stopped."

Club-goer Rob Rick said the shooting started just as "everybody was drinking their last sip."

He estimated more than 100 people were still inside when he heard shots, got on the ground and crawled toward a DJ booth. A bouncer knocked down a partition between the club area and an area where only workers are allowed. People inside were then able to escape through the back of the club.

Christopher Hansen said he was in the VIP lounge when he heard gunshots. He continued to hear shooting even after he emerged and saw the wounded being tended across the street.

"I was thinking, 'Are you kidding me?' So I just dropped down. I just said, 'Please, please, please, I want to make it out,'" he said. "And when I did, I saw people shot. I saw blood. You hope and pray you don't get shot."

The attack follows the fatal shooting late Friday of 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie, who had been a YouTube sensation and former contestant on "The Voice." She was killed after a concert in Orlando by a 27-year-old man who later killed himself.

Wisconsin could pay exonerees up to $1M

Rep. Dale Kooyenga, R-Brookfield; Rep. Gary Hebl, D-Sun Prairie; Sen. Van Wanggaard, R-Racine and Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison are co-sponsors of the legislation, which is expected to be formally introduced in the coming weeks.

At a news conference in Madison, Kooyenga, calling the changes "long overdue," said there is no real amount of money that can deliver justice to people who are victimized by wrongful convictions.

"How much money is it worth to miss the birth of your children....or for your mother to believe you are a rapist?" Kooyenga said. "You can't put a price tag on that. But all we can do is give these people a chance to have families, careers, to own a home. It's a start."

The bill, which is still being revised, would also provide exonerees with access to transitional services currently offered only to inmates who complete their sentences, including heath care. Under current law, people who are exonerated of crimes are offered no such services.

Turkey Cracks Down on Islamic State Militants

Turkish security forces are engaging in what is being seen as an unprecedented crackdown on the Islamic State militant group – an indication that Ankara's policy towards the Islamic group has changed.
July has seen Turkish security forces step up operations against Islamic State supporters in Turkey.
Last week, 21 alleged members were detained in dawn raids spreading across several cities. Security forces claimed large amounts of ammunition were found along with uniforms.
Local media this month also reported large numbers of arrests of would-be jihadists seeking to enter Syria through Turkey.
Ankara has been under considerable pressure from its Western allies to crack down on the Islamic State group. Turkey, which borders both Syria and Iraq, is routinely described by its critics as being a jihadist superhighway.
The raids indicate a change in Ankara's stance towards Islamic State, said Semih Idiz, columnist for Turkey's Cumhuriyet newspaper and al-Monitor website.
'There has been much talk they were a little cautious ... not only because of the blowback threat, but because they felt initially groups like this might help topple Assad and then they would be able to be controlled," he said. '... Ankara is gradually shifting to the other side of the fence.'
Soli Ozel, an international relations expert at Istanbul's Kadir Has University, said the crackdown on the Islamic States is a response to growing international pressure.
'Turkey is very unhappy - maybe a bit too late - to be identified as a party to the sectarian fighting in Syria," he said. "And it is very rapidly trying to disassociate itself from that label. And its attitude vis-a-vis IS seems to have changed rather drastically in the past two, three week.'
The crackdown on the Islamic State comes after the Islamist-rooted AK Party lost its majority in parliament in last month's general election. Following that setback, there have been growing calls within the party for a reassessment of its foreign policy.
Last week, former President Abdullah Gul, a founding AK Party member, strongly criticized his party's foreign policy - claiming it had isolated Turkey.
Columnist Idiz said hard pragmatism is also a factor behind Ankara's IS policy change.
'Especially when the tide is generally internationally moving against ISIS and you want to be on the right side of fence in that regard," he said. "So it's a combination of this new atmosphere that is probably developing vis-a-vis foreign policy, but also it's a result of developments on the ground.'
Observers warn that the threat of IS retaliation remains real, given that the groups is believed to have many Turkish members. Turkish security forces are expected to be on high alert.

Damning video obtained by Australian media shows pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine sifting through the wreckage of MH17 and finding to their surprise that the aircraft was civilian rather than military.
Part of the 17-minute video, published one year after the Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down over rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine, appears to include the moment rebels realize a civilian airplane rather than a Ukrainian military jet has crashed.
The video, taken on mobile phones by the rebels themselves, could support initial evidence that the civilian airliner with 298 passangers on board was shot down mistakenly by rebels who believed they had destroyed a Ukrainian Sukhoi air force fighter jet.
News Corp Australia, owner of the newspaper, called the video exclusive footage that was taken by the rebels and smuggled out of Donetsk just this week after months of efforts to obtain it.
The newspaper said that the video shows a rebel unit dispatched from Donetsk to the crash site to hunt for Ukrainian military pilots that the rebels believed had parachuted out after rebels shot their jet fighter down.
But at least parts of the clip appeared in BBC coverage in the immediate aftermath of the crash.
News Corp said that in one frame a man wore a clearly visible identification tag from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic around his neck.
The rebels, holding guns and dressed in army camouflage as they wandered around the still-smoldering wreckage, can be heard in the video talking about looking for the Ukrainian pilots and then expressing surprise and confusion as they discovered the aircraft and its passengers were civilian.
“It’s a civilian!” said the commander. And then, in a revealing admission: “They [headquarters] say the Sukhoi brought down the civilian plane and ours brought down the fighter."
Speaking in both Russian and Ukrainian, the rebels ask how this passenger plane was allowed to fly over Ukraine. An unidentified commander is heard receiving calls from rebel leaders trying to find out what is going on.
Rummaging Through Luggage
The rebels express surprise and dismay as they find dismembered bodies of civilians with luggage tags showing they were from Australia and Malaysia.
Despite their macabre discoveries, the rebels are seen rummaging through luggage and gathering phones, wallets and other items of value.
"It is sickening to watch, and 12 months on from the downing of MH17, it is deeply concerning that this footage has emerged now," said Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on Australian TV.
"It is certainly consistent with the intelligence advice that we received 12 months ago, that Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 had been shot down by a surface-to-air missile," she said.

Gunman attacks 2 military sites in Tennessee; 4 Marines and shooter are killed

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A gunman unleashed a barrage of fire at a recruiting center and another U.S. military site a few miles apart in Chattanooga on Thursday, killing at least four Marines before he was shot to death by police, and sending service members scrambling for cover as bullets smashed through the windows.

Federal authorities said they were investigating the possibility it was an act of terrorism, but have no evidence yet that anyone but a lone gunman was involved. They also said there was no indication that the general public was in danger. The FBI has taken charge of the case.

PHOENIX — Undercover sheriff's deputies arrested a Pennsylvania man Friday night on suspicion he traveled to Arizona to have sex with a horse.
Michael Crawford, 68, landed in Phoenix believing he would meet with a horse owner he'd been corresponding with online, according to a statement released by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
Crawford hoped the fictitious owner would allow Crawford to engage in "perverted" sex acts with an animal, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said at a press conference Sunday.
Crawford posted an ad on a popular website soliciting a willing horse owner, according to the Sheriff's Office.

There were unconfirmed tornadoes in western and central Minnesota, much sogginess in the metro and significant damage in the Brainerd lakes area.

Sunrise Monday brought a better view of the damage from the previous night’s stormy weather that stretched from western Minnesota, through the Brainerd area and into the Twin Cities.

Trees were down and thousands of people were without electricity in the Brainerd lakes area, and a barn was destroyed about 6 miles southwest of Staples, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Thunderstorms brought down power lines in several parts of Todd County, the weather service added.

The Gull Lake Dam and Recreation Site near Brainerd was evacuated of campers, and ordered closed immediately and indefinitely, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

“Hundreds of trees are down” in and around the campground, the corps said in a statement. Campers are being ordered out so crews can begin tree removal. The camp’s boat ramp is also closed, the corps added.

There also were reports of damage at Brainerd International Raceway, in particular a section of metal grandstand.

In the Twin Cities area, Lakeville was among locations reporting house fires due to lightning strikes, one of those a duplex on 170th Street.

Baltimore Mayor Attacked: Stephanie Rawlings-Blake Doused With Liquid At Community Event

The mayor of Baltimore, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, is well after coming under attack at a community event over the weekend. The suspect in the water-throwing assault is in custody.
As Mayor Blake greeted locals at the Mondawmin Festival on Saturday morning, a woman charged the city leader and doused her on the head and face with a large cup of liquid.
Aides of the Baltimore mayor rushed to her side and helped dry her off with towels. Meanwhile, Rawlings-Blake's security detail subdued a woman suspected of throwing the liquid, presumably water, on the mayor.
Baltimore police took the woman into custody and booked her with second-degree assault for dousing the Baltimore City mayor with water. Sources identified the arrested woman as 37-year-old Lacheisa Pailin-Sheffer. Reporters interviewed the Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake shortly after the water attack.

"I didn't know what it was that she threw at me. I hope it was water. It was more shocking than anything else."

Howard Libit, the mayor's spokesperson, elaborated on the incident.

"Fortunately, the mayor is fine. She went on and had a great time at the festival." Libit said the Baltimore mayor remains focused on the business at hand of representing the people.
"She enjoys opportunities like this to engage with the people of Baltimore. This was an odd, random incident. Things like this happen."

The Baltimore City event attended by the mayor is a daylong celebration for residents that offer community outreach and gestures of solidarity. Not-for-profit organizations and city agencies were on-hand to help those in need.

The festival comes on the heels of the Baltimore riots. The spring unrest was a response to the alleged police brutality and death of Freddie Gray. Stephanie Rawlings-Blake came under fire for the city's role in addressing the violence and looting.
New Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby was hailed a local hero when she pursued indictments of six police officers in Gray's death. They now await trial. Recently, Commissioner Anthony Batts was fired days ago over rising violent crime in the city.
Despite the dangers imposed on the mayor of Baltimore, as with any public official, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake realizes the mission for the greater good often outweighs personal safety. It's a tradeoff, but one in which the mayor took on with grace. Thankfully, she is safe from the weekend water attack.

Yesterday, former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell lost his appeal of his conviction last year on corruption charges:
A three-judge federal appeals court panel on Friday unanimously affirmed the public corruption convictions against former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell, thoroughly rejecting each argument from the onetime Republican rising star and declaring that it had “no cause to undo what has been done.”
The 89-page opinion from the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit brings to a close an important chapter in the story that emerged more than two years ago when The Washington Post first reported on the governor’s strange relationship with a Richmond businessman. It also means that the first Virginia governor to be convicted of a crime will probably have to go to prison in the coming months.

First Milwaukee cop killed on duty was buried 131 years ago — but where?

The Milwaukee Police Department hopes to respectfully mark the final resting spot of Frank Piszczek, the first officer here known to have died in the line of duty.
There's just one problem: The policeman's grave from 1884 is lost.
Piszczek lies in peace, if anonymously, at Holy Trinity Cemetery on the city's south side. That much we know from news accounts of his murder at the hand of a suspect he was trying to arrest.
"Every lead was a dead end," said the police department's media producer, Jon Riemann, who is coordinating the effort to find Piszczek. "We all know it's a relatively small area that's the original section of that cemetery. So, we all know it's there somewhere, but we just can't pinpoint where."
Records of 19th-century burials at the cemetery have been lost, supposedly in a fire many years ago, said Wayne Haase, the superintendent at Holy Trinity and also nearby St. Adalbert and Mt. Olivet Catholic cemeteries. He went through every dusty burial book he could find but did not locate the exact grave spot.
That means perhaps hundreds of other graves in that old section, blocks one through four along S. 13th St., also are not listed in any surviving cemetery records. Many of the grave markers are so weathered or damaged as to be unreadable.
Riemann walked the rows along with police department spokesman Lt. Mark Stanmeyer, but they could not spot the officer's grave. I also searched. There are graves from the 1870s and 1880s, but I did not find Piszczek's name carved in stone. A more exhaustive search is needed.
Piszczek was just 33 with eight years on the force when he died on June 22, 1884. Early on the previous day, the officer — or roundsman, as the job was termed back then — was questioning a Chicago man "on suspicion of being a crook" near the Union Depot at what is now the area of 2nd and Seeboth streets, the Milwaukee Daily Journal reported.
Piszczek arrested the man and began walking him toward the police station at 1st and Florida streets. The suspect broke free and fired two shots from a revolver at Piszczek, hitting him in the abdomen. The officer fired back, but the man got away. Police had a possible identification for the man, but despite a massive manhunt and a $500 reward offered by Wisconsin's governor, he was never brought to justice for the murder.

Retired sheriff's book details Posse Comitatus ousting.

On May 29, 1984, Portage County Sheriff Dan Hintz locked his pistol in his car and walked into a compound of a right-wing extremist group called the Posse Comitatus.
He had arranged a meeting with Posse leaders, including Don Minniecheske, the military leader of the group. Hintz's goal was to convince those leaders to remove a cluster of mobile homes they had congregated on a rural parcel of land near Tigerton. The Posse, with its racist, anti-Semitic, anti-tax and anti-government ethos, had been a thorn in the side of elected and law enforcement officials for years, and state and local officials were planning to use zoning violations to break up the camp.

But the pressure rose nearly to the breaking point when Minniecheske reached behind his back, pulled out a .45 caliber pistol and slammed it down on a coffee table.
"He said that we would wade knee-deep in blood if we attempted to remove them," Hintz, now 69 and living in Dunedin, Fla., said in a phone interview. Barbara Wickstrom, the wife of another Posse leader, James Wickstrom, who at the time was jailed in Milwaukee County, intervened and calmed the situation down.
