The Heavenly Homestead

Starting a Small Herd of Goats & 2 of them are Pregnant

2021-03-13T12:17:00.005-07:00

I've been thinking about getting goats since the beginning of the Homesteading dream, but I never thought that this would be the year for goats. Let's be honest we are living off-grid in a Yurt so there are a lot more things that need to be done, but life is too short and when I saw the opportunity, I had no doubts and I took it. Hansen Never Done Farms is relocating to Oklahoma and was cutting her numbers and that is that, the rest is history. Today March 13th 2021, I sit here while we drive to Medford, and I can't help it, I feel overwhelmed with how much needs to be done before they come home. 2 barns ( small ones) fencing, 2 pens, I mean the list goes on and on, including feed, feeders and the small but important things that need to be ready. Overwhelming is an understatement, but I've never been ready for anything UNLESS I have a deadline, mine is in about a month. Here is the video where I introduce you to our goats and plans.

Do you have goats? Share your thoughts down below.

We left the City during the Pandemic| COVID-19 Changed our Minds | First week's progress in our Off- Grid Homestead

2020-05-28T09:45:00.000-06:00

Let me catch you up:

We sold our home of 14 years in the Salt Lake City Suburbs on June 2nd, 2019. We spent the summer traveling, going to State Parks, National Parks, and learning about the nomad life.

By October we were done, we didn't want to boondock, worry where to park when we had no reservations or where to take the dogs out to pee, for us it was stressful and we decided to get a spot in an RV resort to spend the rest of the time in town while finishing up work contracts.

The RV Resort was beautiful, clean, huge dog park, water, electric, sewer, giant chessboard, basketball, soccer fields and we had our own private entrance to a trail that is paved to ride your bike or take the dogs for a very long 25-mile walk if you wanted to.

In theory, sounds great! All we had to do is pay 700 a month and they would take care of the rest, green grass, perfect landscaping, the garbage you name it they have it!

But here is the BIG BUT, we were packed in like sardines, you could hear your neighbor play video games, you knew the kind of movies he watched on Sunday nights and EVERYONE HAD DOGS, and my 170-pound dog has this "social anxiety" and thinks everyone is out to get him, literally.

So taking him to go out and pee was an adventure, covering all the corners to make sure no dog was in sight, visiting the dog park at 11PM or 5AM or both really to let him roam free, the rest of the day going out the door for a quick pee, but lots of time inside our RV and not enough to exercise, or play. It was hard on the dogs and on us.

We knew we were moving to our Homestead property at the end of the School Year, but because of the Corona Virus classes started online and after a 5.4 earthquake that shook me to the ground and hundreds of aftershocks we decided now is the time so we planned and decided April 30th was the best time to do it and we did.

Our family came along, helped with whatever we had left to move, my husband towing the trailer, I was driving the Class C RV, my sister in law with her kids and husband bringing the rest of our tools and furniture in their truck and my mother in law bringing our "personal zoo".

But then everyone left, the reality was setting in, and here is my first snippets of the first week in our Homesteading Off-Grid life.

Join me tomorrow for a tour of my "failed spring garden" and what I'm doing to try to "fix" it.

Are you considering moving due to the Pandemic? Did it change your plans?

Let me know in the comments below.

I bless you all people!

Lety

If you were thinking about "decorating" your garden, I would definitely recommend these lights, you don't have to replace batteries because they charge with the sun, they are small and stylish-modern style and you can also highlight your garden or "green oasis" at night.

So instead of turning on your patio light, place a few in strategic places, try it and then go back for more, you will love the subtle lighting in your garden this summer.

YOU CAN BUY THEM IN BULK HERE

🌱Light up the night with the power of the sun! Solar-powered spotlights harness and store the power of the sun and use it to provide spotlighting for houses, bushes, and other landscaping.

🌱Simply place the stakes into the ground, aim the spotlight at the appropriate spot and you’re done — no need for electrical cords and the lights automatically illuminate at dusk!

In this series, I decided to share with you the most cost-effective way to create an outdoor oasis wherever you live, and how to create the $1 garden with Dollar Tree products.

Having even the smallest green outdoor space has great health benefits, like improved general mood and attitude, reduces stress, promotes mental health, and functioning and that is only to name a few.

These 10 in planters are super cute! I love the faux rattan effect and they look wonderful for an outdoor oasis, no matter where you live, if you have a yard, concrete patio or even a balcony that fits 2 chairs, here is a great decorative addition to create that "green oasis" at home, during the Stay at Home orders or Social Distancing.

YOU CAN BUY THEM IN BULK HERE

🌱With spring around the corner, we all want our gardens to look their best.

🌱 These rattan planters can give you a nice "stage" to show off your gorgeous flowers and plants.

Dollar Tree Best Finds! Garden Collection Metal Trellises, 24.25 in.| The $1 Garden| On a Budget

2020-04-16T09:18:00.000-06:00

Another 5-star gardening product from Dollar Tree!

If you started your tomatoes from seed to give them a headstart, by now you are probably desperate to get them outside and planted, however, at least here, it has been snowing, in April... a lot, so putting them outside is out of the question.

My peas are flourishing and plants getting taller, I just can't wait, but then I remembered, I need a trellis or several, (I have over 30 tomato plants and they need support) so I decided to buy these small trellises, that I can keep year after year to support small plants while I build a taller trellis for when they are full grown.

BUY IT IN BULK HERE

You can use this trellis for any plant that needs climbing or to lift it and make more room in the garden bed. Here are all the details you need to know before heading out to your

Dollar Tree Store.

If you are starting a garden on a budget this Spring 2020, I have more gardening products you can find at Dollar Tree and you can check them out in the links below:

It is fun to get your hands in the dirt, I love it, but I also need gloves... I know, I'll explain.

When I'm starting plants indoor, I love the idea of getting the mix wet, filling up the small pots or cells, not a big deal, however, when the time comes to go outside and transplant wearing gloves is good protection, a good practice when amending soil with manure, adding fertilizer, etc.

So there is a place for gloves in my gardening, not all the time, so I don't need anything fancy and these are perfect for me and they only cost $1!

🌱Pretty spring garden gloves save your hands from getting dirty and scratched.

🌱Plus, dotted palms and fingertips help you keep a tight grip on garden tools.

🌱Made from assorted colorful fabrics with knit cuffs, one size fits most.

BUY THEM HERE

They are available in 4 colors and all over Dollar Tree stores, so if you are out getting groceries and you need some gardening supplies just stop by Dollar Tree and get these gloves in your favorite color.

CONTAINER GADEN DO'S AND DONT'S | HOW TO START A CONTAINER GARDEN

2020-04-11T18:30:00.000-06:00

🌱 DO

Always consider the safety aspect of the placement of the container, is it heavy? don't put it in a hanging basket, is it safe that high? you get the idea. Keep safety in mind.

🌱DON'T

Don't put low and wide containers in places where kitties frequent, if you do you might have to add netting or some spiky branches to discourage them to use them as a potty room.

🌱DO

Maintenance is necessary, it is not going to take the time a regular garden would, but keeping a calendar to remind you when to fertilize, a reminder on your phone to water the plants or simply visit your garden every afternoon and observe, that will keep it looking it's best.

🌱DON'T

Avoid danger to people that walks by, especially if it is in your front yard, cacti can be painful so it is not the greatest thing to keep in a place that kids can touch. Just saying, it will avoid some unnecessary confrontation.

2020-04-11T18:07:00.000-06:00

There are many benefits of starting a container garden, right now, most people are looking into it to start growing their own food, even if they live in the City.

🌱 YOU DON'T NEED A LOT OF SPACE

No matter where you live growing a Container Garden can be achieved, small garden, big yard, balconies or concrete patio. If you have some floor space, hooks to hang some baskets from your patio covering or even a rail with a window box... there are many ways and containers that can make this possible. You just need knowledge, and that's what I'm here for.

🌱UNLEASHES CREATIVITY & DECORATES YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE

A Container Garden is a great way to unleash your creativity, you can decorate with planters, add accents, solar lights, outdoor furniture (or just a chair), accent pillows and a sweet fragrance with your new garden.

For instance, if you happen to live by a not so beautiful house, neighbor yard or just want to create some privacy, you can add some dwarf trees or bamboo in some colorful containers and soon enough you will have a "green fence".

If you have noisy traffic next to your outdoor space, you can grow grasses in containers and catch the sound of the wind.

Or if you just want to draw attention to your front door, pathways, or even house boundaries, you can do that with a Container Garden.

🌱IT TAKES LESS TIME

A regular garden takes digging, weeding and tilling the soil, a Container Garden doesn't, it is a controlled environment so it is easier to manage.

Most people don't have time for a garden but still want to grow organic fruit and vegetables at home without turning their yard in a farm. This is a great solution.

If you rather not buy those expensive seed starter trays here is a cheaper alternative.

🌱They are a 5-star gardening product that I'm sure you will enjoy as much as I do.

🌱 This is only to start your plants because they are small, but they are a perfect size so you don't have to change pots as soon as the plants start growing.

If you purchased starter plants, you probably have some of these at home, but if you like me want to start your garden from seed, this is a great way to buy in bulk, and reuse them every year.

If you have a small balcony, concrete patio or yard, you can still make it feel like your own little piece of nature, by adding some plants and in this case, ones that hang so you can plant strawberries (or any edibles really), or beautiful hanging flowers, it is up to you.

🌱 All you need is, potting mix, a wire basket hanger like this one, a pot (for a hanging basket), and some seeds, whatever kind you like. Thankfully you can find all these products at Dollar Tree and if you click on each one of them you can learn more about them so you can find them at your local Dollar Tree store.

If you are starting your Spring Garden 2020, you probably have quite a few things you want to plant, by the time you start planting you should have Potting Mix, Seeds, Plants, Planters, Watering Can, Fertilizer ( by the way you can find all these at Dollar Tree, just click on the names), so it is an initial investment that we pray and hope is going to pay off.

In this post, I have a few suggestions to start your garden on a budget and today instead of buying window box/planter at our local hardware store, I have a $1 suggestion that not only works but is one of my favorites.

🌱 These rectangular planters can be used as a window box for herbs, strawberries or anything that you can let crawl out of the edges, it looks beautiful and good quality too.
