DCS and Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System (CTCSS) have the same functions. Their only differences are encode and decode methods, and the number of selectable codes.

The Digital Coded Squelch allows a digital data transmission to be added to the radio signal. This digital code is transferred at around 134 bits per second, a very low rate so that once it gets across the speaker, it is heard at a very low bass note. Around 176 DCS codes are available but some of them are least used.

Whether you are opting for DCS or for CTCSS, remember that this doesn’t mean you will have a private channel. In any radio, there will be instances when your conversation will be heard or that you will still experience interference by people who are transmitting at the same time as you.

What is CTCSS?

Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System or CTCSS is one of the most important features of a conventional radio. CTCSS has various names and is also known as Private Line or PL (coined by Samsung), Quiet Tone or QT (coined by Kenwood), and Channel Guard or CG (termed by GE, Ericsson and Harris). Whatever it is called in your radio device, the function of CTCSS is still the same. And no matter how many more features are added to the conventional radio every day, the function of CTCSS remains one of the most critical to a radio device.

So what are the capabilities of CTCSS?

CTCSS works with sub-audible tones that are below the normal voice range of the radio which is between 300Hz to 3,000Hz. It uses 67 Hz to 254 tone modulation attached on the carrier having voice traffic. There is an industry-wide accepted list of tones from where these sub-audible tones are. In most radio devices, these tones have been programmed already for your selection.

CTCSS allows for encoding (transmission of the tone on the uplink), and decoding (sub-audible tone’s process of opening the squelch on the subscriber radio receiver). It works mainly for three reasons: a) it allows access to repeaters and networks, b) it makes it possible for multiple users to communicate on the same channel, and c) it helps improve radio operation in areas that have interference and noise.

In addition, if your transmitter is part of part of the interference problem, you may have the option to pick up a different encode tone from your decode tone.

The monitor button is the part of your two way radio that is responsible for monitoring if anyone else is present on the frequency that you are on. To use it, press the monitor button which is typically found on one side of the radio body. It will let you know if there is another user on your frequency before transmitting.

Traditional radios have a monitor button. This is often called a “channel-monitor feature.” The use of this feature is required among radio operators when monitoring the channel prior to transmission. Using the monitor button helps enable clear communication between parties.

Programming the radio’s LED indicators to indicate activity also helps the radio user in monitoring the frequency before transmission. Some radios also have a channel-busy feature which a user can enable when radio is programmed. The “busy channel lockout” helps user get clearer communication because it prevents transmission until it ensures that the channel is clear.
