WORDS FROM THE HERO

Pe@ce World, it has been A very long time since I have posted here. I have been posting daily but I have been doing so @t (HTTP://DUTCHMASSIVE.TUMBLR.COM) instead. However this post was to important and massive in size to get lost in tumblr. Since I have been posting over there I have noticed a few things. 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, year olds love dope hiphop. I had no idea that good music was being heard by our younger audience. I must say I am extremely happy about this. The Radio and TV doesn't give much shine to Good music in general so I guess the fact that everyone is on the internet these days is great for the spreading of good culture.

For those of you who are reading this so far and thinking what does any of this have to do with super producer BUCKWILD? Buckwild is a popular Hip hop producer hailing from The Bronx, New York. Originally a DJ, Buck began producing after meeting MC/Producer Lord Finesse. He later joined Finesse's super-crew D.I.T.C., along with Showbiz and A.G., Diamond D, Fat Joe, O.C. and the late Big L

BIO Buckwild's first major exposure came when he produced the majority of O.C.'s 1994 underground classic Word...Life, most notably the single "Time's Up". The same year, he produced 3 songs for Organized Konfusion's second album Stress: The Extinction Agenda, as well as a track for Brand Nubian's Everything Is Everything album. Buck continued his exposure in 1995, producing on a number of hailed underground albums, including Big L's Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous, AZ's Doe Or Die, Kool G Rap's 4,5,6, and Mic Geronimo's The Natural. In the mid-to-late 1990s, he produced for artists like Akinyele, Tha Alkaholiks, Beastie Boys, Big Pun, Brand Nubian, Capone-N-Noreaga, Diamond D, Fat Joe, Jay-Z, Mase, Memphis Bleek, Nas, O.C., Organized Konfusion, Sadat X, RA the Rugged Man, Mad Skillz and The Notorious B.I.G.. Perhaps his most famous beat came in 2000, with Black Rob's hit single "Whoa!".

A case could be made for Buckwild being the most sophisticated remix scientist in hip-hop. He has a knack for being able to transform a good song into something incredible, as well as the ability to completely change the feel of a track without losing the essence of the original. Buckwild’s ‘Remix #1′ of ‘Life’s A Bitch’ flips the smoothed-out album version into an eerie vision of paranoia, while his interpretation ‘Daaam!’ twists a rowdy party starter into a smoked-out head nodder, while his version of ‘Rock On’ is nothing short of genius.

Buckwild - Diggin' In The Crates: Rare Studio Masters [1993-1997]
It's a dream come true. Imagine one of your favorite producers gathering on a double disc close to forty tracks you previously didn't have easy access to. For those not able to put a track to the name, here's a summary of Buckwild's biggest beats: O.C.'s "Time's Up," the Artifacts' "C'mon Wit Da Git Down," Organized Konfusion's "Stress," AZ's "Ho Happy Jackie," Big L's "Put it On," Kool G Rap & Nas' "Fast Life," The Notorious B.I.G.'s "I Got a Story to Tell," Jay-Z's "Lucky Me," Black Rob's "Whoa!," Beanie Sigel's "What a Thug About," Nas' "These Are Our Heroes," The Game's "Like Father, Like Son," and 50 Cent's "I Don't Need 'Em." Personal favorites include Mic Geronimo's "Masta I.C.," Organized Konfusion's "Why," Brand Nubian's "Alladat," Big L's "Da Graveyard," Kool G Rap's "Blowin' up in the World," A+'s "Me & My Microphone," A.G.'s "All Eye Seeing," O.C.'s "Half Good, Half Sinner," AZ's "I'm Back," and several tunes that are included on this epic collection.
Sometimes when I hear the name Buck in relation to hip-hop production, it happens that I'm reminded of that MC Ren rhyme from N.W.A's "Alwayz Into Somethin'"... "I heard a dope beat, somebody told me that Buck did it / but if Dre didn't do it, I can't fuck with it." Completely unrelated to one Buckwild of course, because back in 1991 there was no trace of a producer named Buck, let alone Buckwild. In our "Word...Life" review we determined that album to be the official debut of Anthony Best as a beatmaker. "Diggin' In The Crates - Rare Studio Masters" reveals that an even earlier production credit exists - "You Can't Front (...It Is Real)," the b-side of Diamond's "What U Heard" single from 1993. D is credited as co-producer, but the way guest Sadat X acknowledges, "Yo Buck, this shit is hot," it's fair to assume that 'Buck did it.' The following year, on the occasion of "Time's Up," The Source crowned him 'hip-hop's next star producer.'
Seven years later, the same magazine's '5th Annual Power 30 Issue,' bringing back to mind Y2K, selected 8 'Chairmen of the Board' 'that racked up the most production credits in 2000' (Dr. Dre, The Neptunes, The Alchemist, Mannie Fresh, Rockwilder, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, DJ Premier). Despite scoring one of the year's defining singles with "Whoa!," Buckwild didn't make the cut and was (alongside Nottz, Ayatollah, and Hi-Tek) relegated to 'Up and Coming Producer' status... To state that Buckwild has never been a true 'star producer' doesn't diminish his accomplishments. Rather, looking back on this career and contemplating his work makes you realize that the fact that he never was a star producer might be the very reason he still is in the game. In fact, it might be harder to meet the demands of an ever-changing hip-hop landscape than becoming the beatsmith of the moment and striking while the iron is hot by following up that one hit with a dozen similar tracks.
In 1995 Buck already demonstrated he was in it for the long haul when in an Ego Trip interview he told Chairman Mao: "Right now in hip-hop everybody wanna get in it, because they'll look on TV and see somebody that looks like they livin' and they be like, 'Yo, I wanna do that,' because they think they can make a lot of money. It's cool, you can make money for what you do, but if you really got your heart in it, then that's when it's all cool. Other people be like, 'I wanna get in it' to make sure they pockets is fat. Or they be like, 'Yo, you in this game and you doin' whatever you doin'. You're not large, or as large as me. I got crazy loot, what you got to show for it?' You can still have longevity. Even if you don't make crazy money, you might have longevity. And they don't understand that."
A Bronx native, Buckwild paid his dues as a mixtape DJ in the early '90s before hooking up with Lord Finesse (who besides having a rap career also put together mixtapes), who introduced him to fellow Diggin' In The Crates producers Diamond D and Showbiz. While not a member from jump, Buckwild, at least in his earlier years, was a true blue Diggin' In The Crates representative, calling his production company Still Diggin' Productions. The D.I.T.C. tutelage soon yielded results, as by 1995 Ego Trip magazine called him 'perhaps the most prolific remix-producer in hip hop today.'
Many of these remixes are now collected on CD for the first time, a real treat for anybody who doesn't have the means to dig in the (vinyl) crates for mid-'90s East Coast rap. All material has been sourced from DATs, ensuring studio quality. Spanning a five year period, "Rare Studio Masters" reveals several trends in the producer's resumé. For the greater part of his career, Buckwild has remained synonymous with dark-toned, sample-heavy, mid-tempo rap from the Rotten Apple. The MC's he did beats for outside of his hometown were usually on the same artistic page. As early as '94 he did beats for New Jersey's Artifacts and Boston's Scientifik and remixed L.A.'s Funkdoobiest and Tha Alkaholiks before hitting up Virginia to work with Mad Skillz and Ill Biskits (whose shelved Atlantic album "Chronicle of Two Losers" is about to be finally released). Another notable characteristic is that Buckwild and his rappers often extended their relationships, collaborating for more than one album. Mic Geronimo, AZ, Organized Konfusion, Brand Nubian, Capone-N-Noreaga, Kool G Rap, Fat Joe, Black Rob, and Beanie Sigel all came back for seconds.
Major production gigs notwithstanding, Buck kept his ears to the streets, trying to capture its rhythms by tapping them into his SP's, Akais and MPC's. In '96 he presented Bronx crew Reservoir Dogs on his own short-lived Still Diggin' Music label, the single's subtly schemin' "Back to Berth" and the subdued, epic "The Difference" both being included here. Crimewave is another crew that was blessed with his beats. Even at the time of writing, he hopes to debut Kurrup Money Inc., a Bronx collective. That Buck's roots in the rap underworld run deep is evidenced by this collection that contains various singles cuts that are not remixes for big names.
There's Brooklyn's Jemini (before he teamed up with DangerMouse), whose "Scars and Pain" (off the same-titled EP) takes you back to a time when Lauryn Hill was "that little cutie from the Fugees," Buck's slightly off-kilter instrumentation creating a paranoid atmosphere that accentuates the Gifted One's wish to "get it off my chest to alleviate the stress." Then on "Story of My Life" a more relaxed Jemini shows himself inclined to sing over the melancholic piano loop. Further rarities include tracks by Ak Skills, the Bushwackas, Street Smartz, FATAL Fountain, Little Indian, and Lace Da Booms. Even the less survival-stressed Mike Zoot makes an appearance with "Live & Stink," whose playful beat matches the tongue-in-cheek raps. And then there's an oversexed Kool Keith "rockin' astro jazz" and breakin' out solo on the '95 version of "Yo Black," originally the title of an Ultramagnetic song from "The Four Horsemen."
A particular role Buck played in the Brand Nubian reunion, as three tracks that led up to "Foundation" are produced by him, and they're all to be found on "Rare Studio Masters." 1995's "I Like It (Remix)" adds Sadat X to the Grand Puba song. After guesting on the "2000" LP, X reinforces that he's got nothing but love for the ex-Nubian, thanking Puba for involving him in "One for All," before auctioning off the "reunion album to the highest bidder / 300,000? Go 'head, you'se a kidder / cause the boys right here is holdin' out for half a brick." 1996 marked the first time the trio rhymed together since the early '90s. Again it was on a remix produced by Buck, the Nubian Mix of Sadat's "The Lump Lump" single. Finally, the Fearless 4-inspired "Rockin' It" from 1997 was a full-fledged Brand Nu comeback track that was apparently recorded one year before "Foundation."
A fixture in Buck's discography is obviously O.C., and by extension Organized. He did tracks on the duo's mid-'90s albums, but their most famed collaboration has to be the remix that opens disc 2. Known as The Lost Remix, this was a completely re-done version of "Bring it On." A studio mob credited as The Ill Rahlos brings the ruckus on the rowdy hook as Monch takes his chirurgical flow disassembly to the extreme while Buck's darkly glimmering beat pounds away. If rap ever deserved the attribute 'underground,' it's here. Not to mention, the Beastie Boys never sounded as New York underground as on the brilliant "Get it Together (Remix)," coming across so natural you'd think that was the original beat they rocked over.
Four of his D.I.T.C. remixes represent Buckwild's smoother side. "You Know Now (Remix)" freshens up the rather dull Show & A.G. original with a somberly swinging sample and kicking drums. "Hip 2 Da Game (Remix)" renders an already airy Lord Finesse track even more weightless. An unreleased remix of Big L's "MVP" (Remix #1) uses the same sample as the aforementioned Show & A.G. mix but features a slightly more danceable rhythm section. "MVP (Remix #2)," unreleased as well, is all jazzy slices atop fat drums. With the combination of rhythmically dropped vocal snippets, an all-embracing, warm bass, strong drums, and Big L's punchline raps, these remixes, like many tracks here, symbolize an apex of New York hip-hop.
One thing about early Buckwild is that his tracks may feature traces of club- or radio-friendliness, or the intended irritation pioneered by Marley Marl and the Bomb Squad, but his personal artistic vision remains intact. The prototype of a digger, Buckwild estimates his sample sources. It is his intent to give a hip-hop form to already beautiful soundscapes as they have been shaped by past musicians. This involves often more than just a simple, recognizable loop and requires meticulous arrangement of patterns, sequences and rhythms. Intriguingly, the finished beats, while dense, always give the rappers room to breathe, and they can be incredibly gentle despite their often uncompromising mechanics. Like O.C. as a rapper, the more emotion Buckwild put into it, the harder he rocked. Whether it was the rappers' inclination to rhyme over beats with a certain kind of gravity, or whether those beats reflect the producer's musical mood is hard to tell, but it usually resulted in impeccably timed, slowed jeep beats that send you to headnod heaven. Absorbing these veiled, hypnotic compositions, you think Buck simply has a dark streak, but some of these beats are really deep and attain an almost spiritual level.
Arguably, such a comprehensive collection focusing on obscure material is likely to include some mediocre works. Every producer who relies too much on samples risks that someone else loops the same bars. Which was the case with Barry White's "You're the One I Need," which at that time was not only used in the Mystidious Misfitss' "I Be (Buckwild Remix)," but also in Eddie F's all-star posse cut "Let's Get it On" and Suga's "What's Up Star." Even during the run documented here, not all remixes compare favorably to the original. Dope originals like "Daamn!" (Tha Alkaholiks), "I Like It" (Grand Puba), "Lyrics" (Special Ed), and "Rock On" (Funkdoobiest) are hard to top, although Buck's remix of the latter does manage to emmit a relaxed West Coast vibe that contrasts well with the album version. Ironically, the most failed attempt might be the remix of his own "The Lump Lump," which, although similar, lacks the irresistable drive of the original (lyrically, though, the Nubians are in top form). He also misses the opportunity to make a real banger out of Clark Kent's "Guess Who's Back" for Rakim. Other remixes, however, are on par with the original (the two for Channel Live's "Mad Izm"), while others still are simply appreciated for underpinning familiar lyrics with fresh musical ideas (the two for Nas & AZ's "Life's a Bitch").
In terms of diggin' in the crates as a way to collect music, "Rare Studio Masters" admittedly makes it too easy on those who refuse to invest the necessary time and money to track down the available material. But as a producer retrospective - the first of its kind -, it's certainly due, especially considering the inclusion of several never officially released tracks. Only taking into account the release's artistic intentions, this collection means that after ten and more years, Buckwild is still happy with the outcome. It furthermore documents the art of the remix in a time when rap remixes often just add star power in the form of guest rappers. Buck graduated from a different school of remixing. The one for Brand Nubian's "Word Is Bond" highlights what a remix can do to a song. It drains it of much of its energy, but at the same time renders the vocals more contemplative. Similarly, the "C'mon Wit Da Git Down" remix calms things down (despite adding Busta Rhymes to the line-up), the slowly progressing, subtly melodic, bass-heavy background setting the pace as xylophone sprinkles and scratches inject flava. Other times, the remix offers an opportunity to make a brand new song (Channel Live's "Mad Izm ('95 Remix)," Black Sheep's "North South East West (Remix)").
"Diggin' In The Crates - Rare Studio Masters: 1993-1997" is a nostalgic look back. Buckwild has stopped making beats like these. His 2003-2007 period will hardly produce a similarly impressive track record. No question, in terms of sales and plaques, ever since "I Got a Story to Tell" the game's been good to Buck. He's been on multi-platinum albums. "Whoa!" probably pushed "Life Story" to platinum status. But most of his beats that mark his ascension into the upper echelon of producers haven't really held much hit potential nor provided the artists with the hip-hop credibility Buckwild once stood for. It's doubtful that he will be remembered for anything he put down for Memphis Bleek, D-Block, Mase, Shyne, Loon, Remy Ma, Benzino, Angie Martinez, Faith Evans, 702, or Babyface. Peace vinyl collecting world! The series continues on, and I want to thank everyone that has supported thus far! We are at our fourth release in this series, with the series concluding on the next release! This one is in the tradition of the previous releases; we are finding history here…

This release is something that we have been sitting on for awhile, and being that Buckwild’s new album with Celph Titled was just released this past Tuesday, it is a great time to finally do this project….

In preparing to start Celph Titled’s album, we spent 3 days at Buckwild’s studio pulling up discs, listening to tracks, and mapping out the project. It was quite the experience in finding and hearing the original SP-1200 disks of classics like “Masta I.C.”, “Put It On”, etc, as well as stuff that was never pressed with instrumentals, like “What I Represent”, and “Blowing Up In The World”. It was truly special to base Celph’s project on beats from that same time period as those songs. Amazingly enough, we also found three DAT tapes (which I overlooked when I had compiled Buckwild’s 2CD a few years before). On these DATs were about 10 submission remixes that Buck had made during the busiest period of his early career. A couple of which you eventually heard on Buck’s original remix EP, but several others that were completely new to my ears. While Buckwild and myself have talked since about doing a following up to that 2CD, we did not have enough material to fill it out. Putting it out as a limited EP was another option, but since there were only 5 songs (remixes only) that had final mixes, we held off. As Celph’s project was finally completed over the next two years, we realized that we would have a few leftover tracks from that as well. We also wanted to somehow put Celph’s posse track featuring D.I.T.C. and Brand Nubian on vinyl also. So hear it is; a mixture of the old and new. It is crazy to release these vaulted remixes 15 years later. I think they speak for themselves as to how legendary Buckwild’s mid-90s sound really was….A little description / history about all of these songs are below.

As with our last three releases, we have made some changes to improve on how we release these records. First, this is already in stock (and sounds great) and all packages will ship in bulk on Tuesday or Wednesday of the week of November 8^th, 2010. So there isn’t an extended wait time after processing your payment. Also, as you know, we are trying to reduce prices on these types of releases as much as possible going forward. This greatly depends on the deals we make with the artists, but this particular EP will retail for only $40 plus S&H.

1. “There Will Be Blood” [LP Version] feat. Sadat X, Grand Puba, A.G., O.C., and Diamond D
This song represents what Celph and Buck's "Nineteen Ninety Now" album is all about. Past, present, and future. Hip-Hop heavyweights going for theirs down the line….Shout out to Nick Wiz for letting us use The Cellar for these sessions. It was a crazy experience to be in the studio and watch all these legends record.

2. “There Will Be Blood” [REMIX] feat. Sadat X, Grand Puba, A.G., O.C., and Diamond D

In true Buckwild 90's fashion, an alternate mix of this joint was made. This remix was done specifically for this EP. Gives the song a whole new vibe and it will only be available on this 12” EP.

3. “Nothin’ To Say” feat. Rise

Celph brought along a classic Demigodz cohort, a call-and-response hook meshed between Mista Sinista scratches, and a bass driven jazzy track from Buck. This is a collaboration that ended up being cut off the main album. Tough to make these calls, but we did not want the CD to be too long. Ended up being perfect for this EP….

4. “The Celph Titled Show”

Another track that we decided to keep just for this EP. Sinista on the cuts once again delivering a nice extended routine for the outro of the song. This was actually the very first Buckwild beat that Celph recorded to for the album. Sleigh bells, filters and keys... It was a great warm-up record and ended up setting the vibe for the rest of the recording process.

1. Kool G. Rap feat. Nas – “Fast Life” REMIX

Buckwild: “I worked on this somewhat later then I should have. Even though I did the album version and it was the single, Salaam’s remix was chosen before I even turned this in. I was going to use it on the white label, but went with the Nas and AZ songs instead”.

2. Da Bush Babees – “We Run Things” REMIX

Buckwild: “I was cool with the A&R at Reprise and I had worked on this remix for submission for a promo Remix 12”. I don’t know if the group ever heard it and the label never ended up releasing any other remixes, so this never materialized. My A&R dude made it up to me later by getting me on the Ahmad single”.

3. The Alkaholiks feat. Diamond D – “The Next Level” REMIX

Buckwild: “I actually worked on remixes for every single off of this album. The only one that was used was the “Damn” remix”.

4. Rampage – “Beware Of The Rampsack” REMIX

Buckwild: “Dallas Austin had worked with the crew on the Illegal project and at that point I was just getting started trying to get placements. I made this one and sent it over there [Rowdy]. Funny, I did this remix a few days after I made “Times Up”. The rest is history”!

5. Grand Daddy I.U. – “Represent” REMIX

Buckwild: “This was one of the real early remixes I tried out. It came out pretty good but I never did anything with it”.
All tracks on the A-Side recorded or remixed in 2009 and 2010. All tracks on B-Side remixed in 1994 or 1995.
All scratches on A-Side by Mista Sinista.

It was the homie Jay Scarlett (Beat Dimensions) who put me onto REGGIE B's music. In fact, It was the track titled "FUTURE MUSIC" that he sent to me that turned me into A die hard REGGIE B fan.

Since then I have listened to everything he has released to the public and have no once been unhappy with the sounds. REGGIE B takes me back to an Era of Soul Music / R&B that has been missing the past decade or so. His Vocal Styling reminds of New Edition, Bobby Brown-Esk even. There are alot of Good Vocalist, Superb even, But few stand out. I have the same beef with "Rappers". There are alot of really dope emcee's out there but Standing out in the crowd is something that is very important I believe. I think if GURU were alive right now (RIP) he would agree 100% being it was thru him that this standard was imprinted so deeply into my head

"It's Mostly the Voice" - Well, If that is the Case, REGGIE B has a very bright future ahead of him. It doesn't hurt that the musicians he surrounds himself with are either good friends of mine or my favorite producers, emcee's Dj's, etc.....

INNATE SOUNDS, LEONARD DSTROY, DISTANT STARR, MILES BONNY, DARU, JOC MAX, BUSY (who happens to be one of my favorite Producers of all time) etc....

REGGIE B will be on my 1st single "Ms Unobtainable" - produced by David Luke off of my new album Titled "Romanticizing" dropping this Fall. I hope to work with him and the rest of the Innate sounds crew much more. Until then, Enjoy one of the dopest Vocalist of our generation and purchase a few of his projects.

Reggie-B is a true musician, singer, songwriter, and producer

Born in Topeka, Kansas (The Sunflower State), Reggie was raised in a heavily musical environment. His father was a musician and his mother a vocalist on the local scene.

Reggie-B started singing and playing multiple instruments at theage of four. By the age of ten, he was composing songs and playing atchurches in the Topeka and Kansas City areas. By age fourteen, he wasperforming at local clubs and participating in studio sessions with hisband "Vision". He later participated in Jazz workshops at WashburnUniversity and won the student scholarship to go on to the statewide Jazz workshop at Emporia State University. He also participated in the Jazz Workshop at Berkeley School of Music in Los Angeles. He later moved to Dallas, Texas where he performed at many local clubs, one of which was The Steve Harvey Comedy Club, where he was part of the house band (The Whitney Russell& Reggie-B Duo). His musical influences spread across the board from, Donny Hathaway to Frank Zappa. Reggie-B is a very eclectic young man and without a doubt, a one man band.

After a meeting Miles Bonny in 2007, he started to acquire international attention in the new school beat scene via myspace, leading to sir play from opinion leaders like Benji

B and Gilles Peterson. Following this buzz, Reggie began releasing critically acclaimed music on a variety of international labels. First release in 2008 from Japanese label CIRCULATIONS, is a singer-songwriter/producer/one-man band Reggie B.

Peace World, Today is May 23rd 2010 - The Day I turn 29 and release my Secret Side quest project, which is not only being released today but completed constructed today as well. For months I have known I was going to release another Instrumental segment piece on my birthday but wanted it to be a spontaneous project that I could look back on and say, on my 29th birthday I created music and released that music Free to the public........... It's home will be my Bandcamp Page but enough of that, lets go in the reason I am posting today.

Kyle Dykes, Professionally known as LEONARD DSTROY has won the Award for Producer I've been Secretly jocking for the past year. That statement was birthed by a Mix he did for TrueRadio a while back which reminded me of myself, (CLICK HERE 2 DOWNLOAD SAID MIX) the way he added certain sound effects, and blended joints together, only thing is my technique lacks any scratching or live blending, my whole Mix technique is done Cut & paste Style via Sound forge reminiscent of the pause blend tapes Majik Most and myself would make back in the 90's....

Since then I have been waiting for this cat to release anything, and noticed he was surrounded by Musicians I love, like miles bonny, Reggie B (who is doing the Chorus for the track "Ms Unobtainable" from my new album ROMANTICIZING) DistantStarr, Daru, Joc Max (who I always thought was DJ SPINNA under an alias, ETC....

When Leonard sent me the link to his project Higher Vibrations, my expectations were extremely high and he surpassed them by light years........ Do not be surprised if you see/hear A Project with my Vocals over Alot of those tracks "MOJAVE" sounds like a beat that was crafted specifically for me, anyone who knows my vibe knows that beat drives me nuts!

I had No idea what I was getting myself into when I downloaded his project with Kutty Slitz, I am away from home right now doing some consultant work in Dallas so new music is the only thing keeping my sane and this album made my trip...... Kutty's voice, delivery and content is Amazing, and DSTROY is untouchable..... I posted what could probally be my favorite song of the decade below "Only You" which I dedicate to that Special someone who is lucky enough to hear A goodnight from me.... One day I hope she realizes how big of a deal that is.........

I really want you guys to know that me making a post about DSTROY on my BORN DAY instead of PUTTING the FOCUS on my Project I am Releasing Later Tonite Means alot, and if you are having Difficulties reading between the lines, IM TRYING TO DRILL IT IN YOUR HEAD YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD THESE PROJECTS NOW!!!!!!!

Tasha Denham: "Just To Get A Rep?"

An Interview with HIPHOPDX.COM

The last week has stung the eyes and hearts of Hip Hop fans. Since the late 1980s, Keith "Guru" Elam gave us street scripture in poetical parables, weathered wisdom and a signature voice of reason. As if the announcement of Guru's death to cancer has not hurt enough, controversies have swept the media trying to understand Guru's last days, his bizarre relationship with musical partner John "Solar" Mosher and a suspicious and damaging last letter.

As the truths come to the light, one courageous woman has come forward. Tasha Denham considers herself a friend to Guru. On two different occasions, they temporarily lived under the same roof between 2006 and 2008. She was also an employee of Guru and Solar's 7 Grand Records, having served a tenure as Executive Assistant within the four-person operation. Lastly, Denham has a young daughter, that she says was fathered by Solar. Having witnessed those two-plus years on a personal, private and professional level, Tasha Denham's accounts come from one of the few people who was privy to the tight circle Solar and Guru kept.

This jaw-dropping and quite-lengthy interview was conducted just minutes after midnight this morning (April 27). As the contents below suggest, it is one first-hand account on the last chapter in the life of one of the most respected emcees in Hip Hop. Merely one person's testimony, but suspicions of foul-play are confirmed in vivid detail, and some background information is provided at a time when all of us who knew Guru, loved him, or lived by his verses are looking for answers.

HipHopDX: Thank you for speaking to us. To start, could you describe your relationship and the context of your relationship to the man the Hip Hop community knows as Solar, as well as Guru?
Tasha Denham: I met Guru and Solar in 2006. I actually met them out in Denver, [Colorado]. I was moving back to New York. I started a personal relationship with Solar and subsequently became pregnant by him, and had a child by him.

In the middle of 2006, a situation happened on tour. They needed some help with some business things - they were in Europe, and needed some things done in the States, and I happened to be able to help them out at that time.

By the end of 2006, I decided that I was going to leave and come back to Denver, due to issues that I was having with Solar in our personal relationship. At that time, because we weren't going to have a personal relationship, I wasn't able to help [7 Grand Records] anymore. After our daughter was born, I started talking to them again, and had just a personal relationship at that time with both Solar and Guru. I considered Guru a close friend of mine. Solar is obviously the father of my child.

In 2007, once again, they were over in Europe, and had some complications on tour. Their tour manager had to quit in the middle of the tour. So they had me do some stuff for them. It ended up working out well, and at that point in time, they decided to bring me on as an assistant for [7 Grand Records] and I was both of their personal-slash executive assistants, at the same time, it was a small record label, so I did whatever needed to be done to try and make the record label run smoothly. So I worked on a day-to-day basis with both Guru and Solar till about July, 2008.

DX: In regards to 7 Grand, I know you probably wore many hats in the day-to-day, but what was your specific title?
Tasha Denham: My specific title was executive assistant. That was the general title I was given.

DX: The Hip Hop perspective is, somewhere in 2004, Guru and Solar began working together musically. Do you know the context in how they came to know each other?
Tasha Denham: Everything I've been told, I've been told by them. I was not around at the time that they met. But my understanding is that in 2003 I believe, they became friends. They would hang out and party together. Guru, at the time, was still with [DJ] Premier [in Gang Starr]. They had the album, The Ownerz at that time. They were just friends. Solar ended up going on one of the Gang Starr tours with Guru in 2003, I believe. They were talking one night, and Solar [was listening] to Guru. [Guru] was expressing his displeasure with [Virgin/EMI Records] at that time. Solar said, "Well, if you're so unhappy with your label, why don't you start your own?" Guru thought about it a little, I guess, thought about it overnight, and then came back to Solar the next day and said, "I want to do this, man. Let's start the label." Solar was like, "I didn't mean us, I meant for you to start it." [Guru reportedly responded], "No. No, man. I want to do it together." At that point in time, Solar told him that if [Guru] wanted to do this, then he had to stop drinking. From that point on, that's when they decided to build 7 Grand Records.

DX: It's a weird question to ask, but I know that what you're telling me a lot on pre-2006 is based entirely on what you've heard, but it's an important question to the Hip Hop community, in the wake of last Tuesday's letter - do you know the context from that Ownerz Tour of the relationship that Solar and DJ Premier may have had with each other? A lot of people believe that Premo has been [attacked by these words Solar may have written in the letter]. A lot of people are curious to know if Solar would have any motive.
Tasha Denham: Um...I do know that there were at least some tensions. I wasn't there, obviously, so I can't say to what extent. But I do know that there was some tensions. I can't say that anything Solar had against Premier had to be one specific incident. Just watching, over the time that I spent with them, Solar had such a twisted sense of how important [his own role] was to the music game. I think there was an extensive amount of jealousy towards what Premier had already created in the music industry. I can't speak that there was one specific incident that created that animosity between them.

DX: As a member of the press, often times, prior to an interview, Premier's name and Gang Starr were often not allowed to be mentioned at all. Did you know anything, as far as behind-closed-doors for the motives in that?
Tasha Denham: I definitely know that press was told, numerous times, not to speak on Gang Starr, not to ask questions on Gang Starr or Premier. And [press was told], that if they were to speak on it, the interview would pretty much be over. I know this because I was the one who told the press this a lot of times. I was required to prep people ahead of time, basically, on what questions were going to be acceptable, and that they wanted to focus on 7 Grand at the time, and whatever album at the time was coming out, and not on the past - it didn't matter. Again, I believe it all stemmed from...I think when Solar got into [the music industry], I feel that he thought it was just gonna take off like that. They were gonna have instant love around the world, instant fame, instant fortune from this label. I don't think he got the realities of quite how hard it was gonna be to overcome the legacy that [Gang Starr] had together. I think that his jealousy of both Premier and Guru's fame around the world - yeah, there's a lot of people who don't know who they are, but anybody who really knows Hip Hop, and especially in Europe and such, it's insane amounts of love and fame out there. Solar would go places and people would want Premier, they wouldn't want Solar. Not because they hated Solar, but because they didn't know Solar. They wanted the legendary Gang Starr, with its producer.

You know, I understand Guru wanting to move on and create things on his own. He did, with Jazzmatazz, way before Solar even came around. But before, I think he didn't understand that maybe it could be both. I think what's distanced Solar so much from so many of the Gang Starr fans is he always acted like he was in competition with Premier instead of taking the natural route that he was Guru's partner now, after Premier. [Instead, Solar] came across with so much anger about it. He truly believes that Premier was financing a campaign agaist him on the Internet - a hate campaign.

DX: Wow. Like a website or just through message board and comment section posts?
Tasha Denham: Message boards as a whole. Whether it be your MySpace or through an article on HipHopDX or another one of the Hip Hop sites. Anything that was put on there that was negative, Solar felt like Premier was fueling that - not that there was fans out there that didn't appreciate Solar's music, that didn't appreciate what Solar called his "genius," that they didn't appreciate the fact that Solar was saying, "I remixed all of Gang Starr's tracks and they sound so much better now." One thing after another.

I have had a lot of people reach out to me since Guru's passing - and before, when he was in the hospital that knew I worked for them and knew I was close, at one point in time, to them. [They said], "I always thought it was strange, 'cause I'd come up to them at a concert and I'd want to take a picture with just Guru. But if I wanted a picture, I had to take one with both Guru and Solar." If he was gonna do an interview, it had to be both Guru and Solar. Guru was not allowed to do interviews by himself.

DX: I interviewed Premier in December 2005 in New York shortly after the break-up was implied. Premier expressed that the group was simply on glorified hiatus. I interviewed Guru and Solar in spring of 2006, and Guru was very resistant to even my question to whether Big Shug's "Counterpunch," which featured Guru, would be the last time fans would hear his voice on a DJ Premier beat. In interviews to come, for various outlets, Guru said some harsh things. You're one of the few people he seemed to speak a lot to in recent years. In your private conversations with Guru, was that [sentiment] really there?
Tasha Denham: There was definitely some distaste. I don't want to go as far as "bitterness." I think of it had been put into his head. I don't know if he truly felt some of the things he said in his heart. He was convinced, by Solar, that back in maybe 2003, 2004, Guru was held up and mugged in Queens, [New York]. Solar convinced Guru, at that point in time, that Premier had put the hit out on him, and Premier wanted him dead.

DX: Wow.
Tasha Denham: He got that into Guru's head, and he got that drilled into Guru's head that that's what happened. I have to believe that that's where some of his distaste came from. He did say things that he was unhappy with, from his past. A lot of it had to do with contractual things. There were situations that he got into contractually that he felt like he had kind of gotten the short-end of the stick, if you want. Not from Premier, but [from Virgin Records and management]. Any of his anger that he had or any of his ill words that he had, I think a lot of them were not really heartfelt. I may be wrong, but I can only take my own judgement. I think that a lot of it was that Solar had him so convinced that all these people were against him: [Gang Starr/Empire manager] Phat Gary, Premier, all the people from the Gang Starr Foundation - Big Shug. I actually just spoke to Lil Dap from Group Home. I've never spoken to him before. I didn't know him, but I knew of him, of course. I knew of him through Guru. He called to express his condolences [and say] "We're all in this together. We all want to see Guru's legacy move on in the best way possible." I think that's what Guru missed out on so much [in] his last few years, because I think he was so distanced from these people because of Solar that he started to forget how much people really did care about him. They didn't just care about him as an artist. I think if Guru never did another Gang Starr record, I truly believe that all of them would've still cared about Guru. For me, anybody's really been touched by Guru and been around Guru knows Guru as a man, they know what a kind person he is. Anybody who's really met him and knows him as a person, they loved him no matter what. I don't think it was always about the music. Lil Dap expressed that to me, that Guru was like a brother to him. They started out at the same time. Guru had to be one of the kindest people I knew. He would give you even when he did not have.

It hurts me to read this [last] letter. If he did write this letter - which I truly have my doubts on, I can't say that some of it was not things that they had spoken on before, and stuff that Solar put it into words himself. I'm not gonna say that, I wasn't there. Do I believe Guru wrote the letter word-for-word or even sentence-by-sentence? I don't believe that. I really hope that Guru didn't spend his last moments of consciousness with hate like that. I didn't know Guru to be like that. I didn't know Guru to be a hateful person. There were other people in Guru's life that Solar had spoken ill of to Guru and had convinced Guru [were] against him. In speaking to Guru in private, Guru himself wasn't always convinced of that. Guru didn't always believe, but at the same time, he didn't always want to speak that back to Solar because it would've not been a good situation either.

DX: New York is a big place, but it's a small place, especially in the Hip Hop industry. A few artists worked with Guru and Solar on early 7 Grand releases - Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, Damian Marley...
Tasha Denham: Common.

DX: Right. These guys weren't just studio rats, so to speak. How close did it get, not in terms of it being a feud or anything, but you think there would have been contact with people that could get Guru's mind right, old peers...
Tasha Denham: Honestly, pretty much, they kept themselves secluded from the Hip Hop world. They did not go out in New York City very often at all. It was a very rare occurrence, after Guru stopped drinking, that they would go out in New York. It wasn't because of Guru's drinking that they stopped going either.

When Guru stopped drinking, when he decided to stop drinking, he stopped drinking. Solar drinks Corona [beers] every single day. Solar would send Guru to the store to buy his Coronas for him. When Guru stopped drinking, he stopped drinking. Guru could have a bottle in his house, he wasn't gonna drink it. He made that decision. When they toured, he was in nightclubs every night. He stopped drinking.

I truly believe that...Solar made it that "there's so much hate out there for us. Being New York, Premier and them are out there, blah, blah, blah." So they didn't go. They didn't even take shows in New York most of the time. There was always an excuse. Shows in Boston, there was always an excuse as to why they weren't gonna do that show. All the tracks that had [featuring artists], they were all sent [to Guru and Solar]. They didn't do those in the studio, personally, with any of those artists. I cannot speak of one single artist that was actually in the studio with them. Most of the time, it was all through management, so on and so forth. So there weren't any opportunities for other artists to help bridge that gap because first of all, if Guru ever had the opportunity, Solar was standing right there.

Guru was never around anyone in the industry without Solar standing right next to him. He never did an interview unless Solar was right there. If somebody was to say, "Yo Guru, when's there gonna be another Gang Starr album?" Guru would just knock it down right away, because if that got brought up and that became an issue, it would be become a [problematic issue] between him and Solar.

Guru and I spoke privately about who was that one person who could help give us that one hit for 7 Grand. He and Fat Joe were always really close, back in the day, and that was one of the people I know he thought about reaching out to. I can't say that he ever did, out of fear that Solar wouldn't agree with it, and Solar would find a reason not to, and it would become a problem again.

DX: For the record, you and I spoke privately before this interview. There's a reason why it's not the first question, and that largely comes from respect for Guru and his legacy and distaste for some of the unfounded rumors running right now. However, I have to ask, as MTV's Sway Calloway so effectively worded last week to Solar, from your perspective, were Guru and Solar engaged in a relationship of "a romantic nature?"
Tasha Denham: I spent extreme amounts of time with both Guru and Solar, both individually and altogether. I traveled with them. At one point in time, I stayed in Guru's house for several weeks. I, myself, never saw any indication of it being a romantic or sexual relationship. I do have a child with [Solar]. I know that there's many men out there that are homosexuals that have children, so that does not say that he's not. I, however, do not believe he is. I never saw any indication of that. I never saw any type of affection in that way, if you want. I saw Guru interested in women. Obviously when I was around, Solar was with me at that point in time, but at the same time, I have my feelings that there were probably other women as well. I never got the feeling that it was homosexual. It angers me, the rumors that I hear out there - not from people like Sway. The way he asked, it was absolutely appropriate. He asked as a journalist. But I have read things, on the Internet of course, that have really disgusted me, because they're being spoken by people that don't have facts. They're just giving an opinion that they're stating as a fact, and I think they're forgetting that both of these men have children. Both of these men have families. Both of these men, especially Guru, has a legacy to be upheld. To sit and put something as trivial as that into the mix [with such little care], is foul. I don't think it's appropriate. If somebody has something that's concrete, then by all means. But if you're only speculating, and because they had a very close relationship, and bizarre relationship to most, that you can't believe that they could have the kind of relationship without it being sexual, I disagree.

I think the way Solar is, he needed it to be that way, because that's the way of control. You get somebody, and you distance them from everyone else. They see you on a daily basis. You're their man day in and day out, the first person you talk to in the morning, the last person you talk to before you go to bed, that's gonna be the person you're gonna turn to for everything. That's the way to best control someone. I don't ever believe it was sexual.

DX: As the details play out, a few people have commented that this is reminiscent of Selena Quintanilla's story. Did you sense a kind of [platonic] worship, on Guru, from Solar?
Tasha Denham: Absolutely not. It was actually the opposite. It was almost like because he had that legacy and all those years in music, it was like he had a distaste for [Guru] because of that.

DX: As a close associate, an employee, all these things. When was the first time you started to notice that things were not normal or healthy?
Tasha Denham: [Pauses] I think it came pretty early on, really. One of the defining moments to me when I knew something was...it was the way Solar spoke to Guru. It was always down to him. He really belittled him, and would do it in front of other people. This wasn't something he just did in private. He is a member of The [Five Percent] Nation of Gods and Earths, as is Guru. He would use that against him, to bring him down. It was important to both of them, very important. I believe Guru's a pleaser; he liked to make people happy. [Solar] would tell him that the Nation of Gods and Earths are ashamed of him, they're disappointed in him. That he doesn't live up to their teachings. I can't think of the word that they used. There was a lot of times they'd get into arguments over it. He'd sit, and Guru would try to defend himself, and Solar would just get more and more irate over it.

There was one night we were at Guru's house. I was about three months pregnant at the time. Guru kept defending himself. Guru actually stood up and kind of got in Solar's face about it. Next thing I know, Solar punched him in the face. From that point in time, he just started kicking him and hitting him. Guru was fighting back, he wasn't just sitting there being a punk, but at the same time, Guru had severe asthma. He didn't have his inhaler. He started really hyper-ventalating and really having a hard time, and Solar kept beating him. It wasn't a fight anymore, it was beating him. I felt that it was so bad that I got in between the two of them and broke it up, because I knew he wouldn't hit me of course. At that point in time, I was pregnant with his child.

Instead of stopping and making sure his partner, friend, "brother" - as he calls him was okay, Guru was sitting there saying, "I'm having an asthma attack. I need to go to the hospital. I think I'm gonna have a heart attack." He's bleeding, really shaking. Instead of stopping and calming himself down, [Solar] told me, "We're leaving," and goes and gets in the car and drives me back to the city. [He] didn't call and check on Guru, didn't make sure he was alright. That's probably one of the first times I was like, "Wow, this relationship is really unhealthy. It's a really sick relationship." After that, if I didn't physically see it myself...I saw [Guru] punched in the face numerous times with no provocation. It [would just be] that he'd get upset with something Guru would say and punch him in the face. I know he knocked a tooth out of Guru's. I know he gave him a black eye [so Guru would] have to wear glasses for photo-shoots and concerts. To listen to [Solar] talk to [Guru], you'd think he was talking to a child sometimes. Guru would tell me how bad that hurt him. He'd say, "Back when we were just friends, he never would have spoken to me this way. He always treated me with respect. Now that we're doing this record label, he has no respect. He treats me this way." There was a fear in him. Solar had distanced him from everything in his life: his family, his ex-partner, the whole Gang Starr Foundation and the music industry, really, as a whole. Guru spent a lot of time alone. A lot of time, if he wasn't with Solar, he was by himself. It was his son or Solar.

He would tell me that since the label wasn't as successful as they originally thought, he just wanted to go away. He just wanted to disappear. He wanted to go to Europe, or go to L.A. and do voice-over work and quit the whole music industry as a whole. He wanted to go back to being a regular guy, like a mailman. It got worse and worse.

Unfortunately, in about July of 2008 is when I was banished from the circle because I wouldn't follow orders that were given to me. At that time, Guru was instructed that he was to have no more contact with me. Without Solar's knowledge, we stayed in contact throughout 2008, till the end of 2008. I had a lot of business information that they didn't have access to, and Guru would need it for different things. He couldn't ask Solar to ask me, 'cause we didn't speak. He couldn't ask Solar [for permission] to speak to me, 'cause Solar would be angry that Guru didn't have [the information]. So he'd contact me. I knew that things weren't getting any better. He'd tell me that Solar was checking his emails. I was also informed that, the longer and longer it went, that Solar even took Guru's phone away for days at a time. Guru wasn't allowed to have a personal life at all. Even when they were on tour, he took Guru's inhaler from him and told him that he wasn't allowed to use it, because it was a crutch, and that he didn't really need it...It just breaks my heart that [Guru] was suffering that way.

DX: Premier said it prior to last week on his radio show, Guru was a tough dude. I knew that about him when I first crossed paths with him when Gang Starr was still in tact. You're guessing like I could guess, but what do you think it was that prevented him from really fighting back and/or walking away?
Tasha Denham: His own fear. His insecurities. His twisted sense of loyalty to Solar. He credited Solar with helping him stop drinking. Guru's town-home, several years ago, burned down. At that point in time, Solar let him come live at his house with his family. So Guru looked at things like that. Guru never took credit himself for quitting drinking. When he decided to stop smoking weed, he just did it. He did it. But yet, when he was still smoking weed, Solar controlled that. Solar kept the weed and would only give Guru what he wanted him to smoke.

[Guru] was dedicated to changing and making his life better. He was a vegetarian, he was working out daily. He was dedicated to his son, and he loved that kid like no other. He wanted to make sure he was healthy, to be around for his son.

I think that he was so scared that if he broke away from Solar that he just didn't know what was next. He didn't always have the support around him on a daily basis. He knew there were people out there that would help him. But when you're not hearing it daily, and you're not around people daily that are telling you these things, it's hard to prevent to break away from the person who is there on a daily basis. They're bringing out your insecurities. Instead of talking about your positives, they're bringing out your faults. He was just scared. I told him before I left, "Guru, you've got to get away. If you don't get away, he's gonna kill you." He was being so abusive to him, physically. Guru was not a punk. Guru would not have taken that from anyone else. No one else. No one. I can't even imagine.

Solar's a bully. He's all talk. He preys on people [that] he can bully. If you won't go along with Solar and you won't let him control you, he will have nothing to do with you. He couldn't control me, and that's why he got rid of me. As soon as [DJ] Doo Wop quit working for them, Guru wasn't allowed to speak to Doo Wop anymore. A man that had been in his life, on a daily basis for almost five years, and he'd known for almost 15, he wasn't allowed to speak to him anymore. Guru was so sick [from the cancer] by that point in time too.

DX: In the later years of their life, what would Guru and Solar do with their free time, especially since they were removed from the Hip Hop industry?
Tasha Denham: Guru's day-to-day basis was basically business all day and studio in night. He had to fit in time to see his son. There were times when he'd want to go to Boston to see his family - his mother was ailing as well, as his father's getting up there in age, and Solar would tell him he couldn't go because he needed to be in the studio. Yet, Solar, during the day, I'd talk to him on the phone, and he'd be laying out in the sun, tanning. Or he'd be working out in the gym. He'd work out like two hours a day. Or he'd be out to dinner with his family. He'd call and give us orders on what to do, work-wise, but who really ran 7 Grand Records? Guru put his heart and soul in that.

DX: Did the label have other employees, besides the three of you and the band?
Tasha Denham: Guru did a lot of the stuff. I filled in whatever role. There was times where Guru would refer to me as their "head of video promotions" or this or that, because there wasn't people there to take those roles on. I helped them with tour booking, routing tours, whatever needed to be done. Guru taught me so much, because I'd never done this. I kind of fell into this. I happened to have a knack for it, as far as their label was concerned. Guru was learning himself too. Because any other tour he'd ever done had always been through a major record label. He'd always had the support of a major. They also had Solar's now-come-to-find-out-wife [Denise Sandoval], who knows about me obviously, working as, I'm gonna say, their accountant. She'd fill in different places as well. Solar has an older daughter that would help out with some Internet stuff. A lot of the other stuff, we'd outsource. We worked with [4Sight Media] for a while, and [Public Wizard]. So there were people involved, but none more than the four of us - Solar, myself, Denise and Guru were.

DX: I find this all to be pretty interesting. Not for nothing, one of my interviews with Guru and Solar, whether it was 2006 for AllHipHop, 2007 for Skope magazine or one of them in 2008 for DX, Solar told me that he had an extensive record collection of his own. Obviously, I know that the Hip Hop community was hard on him initially, being that he did not have production credits prior to Guru and called himself "Super Producer Solar." However, to be fair, did you find him to be a very musical person in your time together?
Tasha Denham: By the time that I came into it, he was already working extensively and exclusively with Guru. Everything that I've been told was told to me from Solar or from Guru, from before [2006]. So I've come to find a lot of the things that Solar told me over the years were absolutely false. How much of what he told me, I'm not sure how much to believe. He did tell me he had a studio before he ever met Guru. He told me that he used to do beats just on his spare time, and this is something he used to just do for fun; he never thought of it as a career. He used to tell me he wishes he just kept it as fun and not as fame. I almost say that with a laugh, 'cause it was all about fame for him. I believe, in hindsight - and everything is hindsight, because obviously, when I met him, I didn't see these things, I believe that he saw a meal-ticket in Guru. Instant fame, instant fortune.

DX: Not to interrupt you. But you spoke about their context of meeting each other. Both were always elusive about that, though they had once told me in an interview about Solar helping Guru stop drinking. We aren't here to throw anybody under the bus, but for the interest of facts, do you know what it was that Solar did for a living? Did that ever come up? He had told press that he worked with at-risk youth, as did Guru.
Tasha Denham: I've been told numerous things, again. Everything I've been told, [I have] not seen first-hand. I've been told at one point in time, [Solar] worked for the MTA [New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority]. I had been told that he was in the military. I have been told in one point in time that he worked on Wall Street. I had been told at one point in time that he dealt drugs. We're talking numerous things across the board.

I've been told that he and - who I'm now finding out is his legal wife, which I was not aware was his legal wife -- Denise Sandoval. I know her another by another name ("Asia"). Just like Solar doesn't go by John, she doesn't go by Denise Sandoval. I was not aware until Birthplace magazine came out with it, that she was his legal wife. Guru was never aware that she was his legal wife. Guru told me things that he wasn't always supposed to tell me. If he had honestly known, I truly believe he would've told me the truth on that one. I don't think he ever knew. That's supposed to be his best friend. Solar didn't even want to admit the truth about that in his life.

I do believe that he probably did work for MTA. That's one of the ones I believe, I think. Everything else, I'm really not sure myself. If anybody can shed light on that, it'd be interesting to me as well. [Laughs] I do know that they had foster kids, supposedly at one time. Because he has used that against me at times, and told me that he's much more capable of raising children than I'd ever be 'cause he has had foster kids. I never saw that though, so I can't say that he ever did have foster kids, or if he was registered to have foster kids.

Guru had numerous jobs. He was a regular guy. He was a teacher at one point in time. He [attended] the Fashion Institute [of Technology] at one point in time. He did numerous regular jobs, I can't even think of them off the top of my head.

DX: In "The P.L.A.N.E.T." he rapped about working in a mail-room when he first arrived to New York.
Tasha Denham: Yep! [Laughs] He did so many regular jobs. Guru, as everybody knows, came from a prestigious family. He had every thing offered to him growing up. His brothers and his sisters, they're writers and they're lawyers, and they're successful professors, so on and so forth. For Guru to go off and do this was breaking the mold; his dad was a judge in Boston. It's what [Guru] really believed in. It's part of him. It wasn't just music to him, it was a part of who he was. It was something he felt like he had to do.

DX: You mentioned Europe. I reviewed and listened to a lot of Guru's later solo work and his albums with Solar. Although they never captured the sonic success of his Gang Starr or first two volumes of Jazzmatazz, they were solid albums that a lot of fans and press domestically ignored. With so much touring, from your 7 Grand experience, can you tell us about their reception abroad?
Tasha Denham: Overseas, I think is much more open and flexible with things than Americans are. From everything to what their tours paid overseas to the turn-outs, they'd do concerts in [unique] places like South Africa and they did one in Spain, with tens of thousands of people there. A lot of them were festivals, yes, but Guru would be one of the headliners. They definitely received more love overseas, more money overseas. These people, they were fans. At the same time, a lot of them were Gang Starr fans. There was still controversy overseas, just like in the U.S., about the Gang Starr situation versus 7 Grand Records. They were bringing in what I would say is triple [the amount of money] overseas for shows to what they were getting here, at least.

They were floating. The label definitely wasn't as successful as anybody would have liked it to have been, but in one respect, it was a new label, an independent label. It was not a major label. They were in a really tough economic time, and a tough time for the music industry. With everything now going digital, it's hard for labels now to make the same kind of money they used to be able to make. Guru was funding a lot of it himself, and there was the money coming in, but a lot of it was being funded from stuff Guru had [additionally]. They were floating. It wasn't successful in the way that they had hoped, but they stayed around. They were still booking shows up until January when Guru was so sick that he shouldn't have even be doing shows, they were still booking them.

DX: So, based on your experience. What happens to Solar now?
Tasha Denham: I'm not sure what his motivation is. Everything he puts out there, he [uses to discredit other people]. [His] going to speak to Sway on MTV, I don't understand the motivation. He's just giving himself more rope to hang himself. He's just looking more and more guilty in everything he speaks, because he's so blatantly...it's so blatantly not true, the things he's saying. He embellishes things so much. But I truly believe he believe the things he says.

DX: -- Not to interrupt you. But it's worth noting, there is a "#FuckSolar" campaign on Twitter and in message boards. Several extremely respected rappers and actors have joined in on that. Is Solar the type of guy that is watching all of these comments and tweets? You say this somebody who really wants fame...
Tasha Denham: He reads everything he can find on the Internet. He'll see this article tomorrow as soon as its posted. Between [HipHopDX], AllHipHop.com, he's obviously on his Twitter, I think it's probably just gnawing at the very core of his being. Peoples' perception is so important to him, even if it's a false perception. When I was [at 7 Grand], he'd be the one to tell me not to tell him if I saw negative things written about them. Yet he'd seek them out. He went looking for them. He would read so much and tell me not to tell Guru if I saw it. You know, the funny thing is, Guru could handle it. He'd been doing it for so long, he knew everything wasn't gonna be positive. I know [Solar] is looking at all these things, all these other artists that are just disgusted by his behaviors, and disgusted with the way this has all come out, and made subliminal comments on Twitter as to situation, and it's gotta be killing him. These are respected artists in the music industry. He has to know, now, with the feelings that people have towards him in the music industry, there is no music career left for him. Who's gonna work with him?

DX: It's a gritty conversation we've just had. Not for nothing, you lost a dear friend. Let's end on a positive note. What's your favorite memory with Guru?
Tasha Denham: I have so many things, so many memories of us, as friends. Just the regular, everyday kind of memories are the things that stick out to me the most. Of course he was an artist. But I look at Guru as my friend. He was there for my daughter's first birthday. I got kicked out of my apartment in New York because Solar had a problem with my landlord and Guru's the one who drove to New York City [from 45 miles away] and helped me carry all my stuff down three flights of stairs, load it in his truck and bring it to his house, and let me stay at his house for several weeks. He was the person, that if I needed someone to talk to, I could pick up the phone and call. Those are the things. He was just a regular guy, but he was such a kind person. We all went to the zoo one day, with the kids. Guru's son was there. He was just a dad that day. He wasn't Guru. Even after 21 years of living with fame, and yet we'd go to a place and hear, "Yo, that's Guru," and it almost always seemed to kind of take him by surprise, 20 years later.

This legacy deserves to be cherished. His son deserves to grow up loving and respecting his father for the person and artist that he was, instead of rumors and speculation.

DX: Lastly, and one question a colleague expressed his curiousity with. You mentioned earlier that Guru comes from a prestigious family. Do you think action will be taken?
Tasha Denham: No. I really hope so. I've spoken to a member of his family before his passing. I got the opportunity to speak ti him before his passing, and after his passing, we've exchanged words. I right now they're dealing with the loss so much. They're dealing with legal issues right now. As everybody's aware, [the Elam Family] was able to retrieve the body. Not having contact with him for so many years, there's a lot of things left up in the air that they're still trying to deal with, as well as the emotions. I think that his family absolutely has his son's best interest in heart. I think that his family has the knowledge, the power and the support behind him [including mine]. His son deserves to know his father, and his son deserves to be the one that benefits from his father's success over the years, not someone else.

It's funny, because I was looking through emails the other day. Just random emails from back when I was working for them, and still in contact from that. I found one from a point in time when Solar and I were no longer speaking anymore, yet he wrote me an...email. His last words in that email were to me, "Fortunes are made, not extorted." I wish at this point in time, Solar could look back at that and take his own advice.

Fans of Guru launch a website based solely on “exposing” producer Solar.

According to the website, www.f*cksolar.com, they have taken to the web to let fans know the “truth” regarding the inconsistencies surrounding Guru's death.

“Welcome to F*ckSolar.com, the site that Solar is going to hate. We will follow Solar till his ass gets in jail, because that's where he belongs. So sit back, relax, grab some popcorn and enjoy the ride (No Solar).”

The site not only uncovers inconsistencies but even drops bombshells about information that was released by Solar.

According to the site, Guru's non-profit, Each One Counts, is not Guru's non-profit and is in fact registered under Solar's wife's name-Denise Sandoval.

Damn, Solar…it was all good just a week ago.

Ali Shaheed Muhammad remembers Guru.

In the UK working on this very cool project. Today began in normal routine, I ate my cereal, suited up for a run, showered, walked over to the studio, said what up to the lads going over last night’s take, powered up my laptop and wait for my cell phone to come alive. I get better phone reception in the studio. Then the words popped on my screen “Guru passed fyi”. Stunned, shocked, deeply saddened. I repeated the words loudly. A brief pause, silence and then laptops open up. I presume everyone is hitting google to get the word.

My memories of Guru precedes the monotone rhythmic rhymes. When my crew was in demo stage way back in the day, I use to see Guru on the “J” train. Late nights journeys from “Hotel Amazon”, “Union Square” and the like. We didn’t know each other then but became acquainted as New Yorkers do when you bump into one another, no words just the universal “what up” head nod. Not too long after that Gangstarr’s music dropped and so did Tribe. Head nods turned into pounds. It was later I found out he was from Boston, nahhhh He rolled like a Brooklyn boy & to me He always will be.

I had the opportunity to work with Guru on a Jon B remix. Conversations often get interesting when you’re the only one passing on the pass if you catch my drift. We kicked it a bit. I learned a lot about Guru then and even more as life moved forward in this industry. Through the years our run-ins changed venues from the “J” train to the dark corners of a club here and there throughout the world. While the beat banged in the background many conversations were had about music and life . He, like I had many deep layers.

This life of music invites all things imaginable, good things and cataclysmic things. When you’re “2 Steps Ahead” you can have both sides within your grasp. God willing the travelers road will lead to enlightenment and the lessons learned can be shared. Guru has left a trail for us to learn from. Even in his last days. I pray his journey is peaceful.

Hip-Hop is fairly young but we’re getting up there. In Guru’s passing I’m asking what are we leaving behind? Your culture is only as strong as what you leave behind for those after you to carry it forward. Hip-Hop means so much to me that I can not put it into words in one writing. I don’t think any of us can and that is why we write song after song after song. In looking at the present state of Hip-Hop I can see we have a lot of work to do. There are a few youngins that get it and they carry the torch well but for the most part they are only a few which means we have to come together and return to being a community of one. That’s a little Islam for you.

I’m deeply saddened and have to get back to work. I’m gonna take that Boston/Brooklyn spirit and push these lads hard today. May Keithy E. The Guru rest in peace. And May his legacy carry on.

The Real Gang Starr Story: RIP GURU

The rap group “Gang Starr” was born in Boston, after Big Shug gave it life with partner Keith Elam now known as “Guru”. At that time Big Shug and Guru were faced with the financial hurdle of funding their studio sessions, so they came up with a plan to solve that obstacle with a robbery…that plan was for “Big Shug” to do the jack and “Guru” serve as the getaway driver, but that didn’t work. Know why? Because when “Shug” was doing the robbery, “Guru” ended up getting scared and took off. So, the robbery got muffled and “Big Shug” did a three-year sentence for robbery.

While “Shug” was in jail “Guru” moved to New York City. There, he ran into “DJ Premier” who just came from Houston Texas. Together, they formed the now legendary group known as “Gang Starr”.

Gang Starr was doing well, and when “Big Shug” returned from prison “Guru” and “Premo” were rightly breaking him off paper. But here’s something what you may not know (which I always knew) Guru, whose real name is Keith Elam, was a homosexual, and he started dating a well-known homosexual from Brooklyn New york named “DJ Solar”. Solar (real name John Barry Mo’Sher) ended up breaking up “Gang Starr” because he pulled Guru away from the talented “DJ Premier”, word is Solar wanted Guru all for himself. I know this because I used to book shows for “Guru & Solar” and dude use to beat on “Guru” I swear!!! I personally witnessed someone walking in on Solar giving Guru a proper beating behind closed doors.

Sources close to HSK were touring Europe with Guru, Solar, and DJ Doo Wop & Kool Keith with Kutmasta Kurt in Fall 2005. At that time the groups had an extended week long stay in the Spanish Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. Guru happily lounged with Solar in his flip flops and swimming trunks downing Hennessy straight and snorting blow by the eightball. This is the same event where Kutmasta Kurt got his nose busted breaking up a fight between Kool Keith’s crew and a concert goer after the show. Matter of fact “Real Connections” still owes about 20,000 euros from that event.

Just this past February, Guru suffered a heart attack leaving him in a comatose state into March. That’s when Solar reportedly kept Guru’s family away from him, because he wanted full control. My sources even tell me that this “Solar” guy didn’t allow doctors to treat “Guru” properly.

When I woke up this morning, I heard the sad news that 43-year-old “Guru” had died yesterday (April 19. 2010), from cancer.

I went into complete silence, and said to myself “Life is too short.” Now, sources are telling me “Solar” is stealing royalties from the group “Gang Starr”. I guess “Solar” got “Guru” to sign over the rights to his name. To make matters worse, “Solar” is saying “Guru” left a letter to all his fans. He says in that letter (printed below), he (Guru) doesn’t want anything to do with his long time collaborator “DJ Premier” even in death…WTF!?!

This “Solar” guy seems to think we’re all a bunch of idiots. Because, “Guru” wouldn’t say any shit like that while on his death bed. “Guru’s” nephew has been speaking about this matter for a while now. Don’t believe me? Ask DJ Premier.

This may all sound harsh, but in fact Jacky and all HSK staff have a deep respect for Guru. One key component that separates Hollywood Street from any other industry blog is that we tell the truth no matter how much it may hurt or damage false images about an art we hold dear. Other sites would never report the truth rather they further perpetuate falsities.

Today I’ll remember Guru as I listen to the third “Gangstarr” album “Daily Operation”…I always liked the song “Take It Personal”. RIP GURU!!!

Guru’s Father Sends Police to Recover Son’s Body

Shocking further developments are coming to light in the wake following the death of the Gangstarr legendary MC Guru.

Reports are coming into HSK that when Guru’s father, the Honorable Harry J. Elam, a former prominent lawyer from Boston and a retired Massachusetts superior court justice, called to recover the body from John “Solar” Mo’Sher, Solar said that he was taking the body upstate for a private memorial.

Judge Elam immediately made claim to the body and asked Solar to “return the body at once”, to which Solar replied that he would return the body if Elam Sr. called off the Elam nephew from continuing to make statements and videos about Solar. Claims which Solar continues to call false.

Judge Elam’s reply, “I don’t have time for these childish games, send my sons body home immediately.”

Following this exchange the police were sent and Guru’s body was recovered and is currently on its way back to Boston, to his family and to lay in honor as they see fit.

Not only should Solar return the body with-out delay, but Solar should return to the family all rights supposedly passed on to him from Guru on his deathbed. These should be held by the family in TRUST until KC is of legal age to handle himself.

This guy Solar, who HSK staff have personally met and traveled with is a NUT job. What is going on in his peas size brain is very troubling to say the least. Now that Guru is no longer around to protect him it might be time for dude to vanish on his own before someone does it for him.

I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.

I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.

My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody’s feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own.

I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. "Mass Appeal" was the video and song that made me fall in love with hip hop and that statement is more than just something said after someone passes to feel important like I saw alot with Dilla and Jam Master Jay, but these words are my History. For me and only me that is a very special thing. Hip Hop is more than just music to me and anyone who knows me and is a fan of the music I create knows how much of myself i give to the hip hop culture. Well, tho it wasn't the 1st hip hop song I liked it was the track, Video to be accurate that changed my life forever....The Sample Drove me nuts, After that night I gave HipHop my Undivided Attention and never looked back. So seriously from the bottom of my heart and with all I have in me.......
I hope His Spirit grace and extreme happyness in the Next Level, In Life he was The GURU and Loved by Many and in Passing He Remains the Same.... His Legacy can never be tarnished and it is a shame for the rest of my life when I think of Gangstarr and all the happy moments, or unhappy but defining moments I might think of Solar and how much of a really reallly disgusting man he must be.........I want to thank Guru, Dj Premier and the Entire Gangstarr Foundation for everything.......Big Shug "Crush" is one of my all time favorite tracks so if you ain't up on it.....That's when ya lost!

On Saturday, April 3, Future of Music Coaltion and Words Beats & Life hosted If I Ruled the Blogosphere: Hip-Hop Bloggers and Social Change, a panel discussion that hip-hop bloggers such as Meka Udoh (2 Dope Boyz), Dallas Penn (Dallas Penn & the Internets Celebrities), Jason Reynolds (OkayPlayer), Frank William Miller Junior (FWMJ of RappersIKnow.com) and Chris Rabb (Afro-Netizen) talking about a host of topics, some of which included net neutrality (I wish we’d have delved into this more), the convergence of technology and independent music,

FMC was on hand to talk about how policy shapes what the hip-hop community does, where it goes and what it says on the online. FMC will also present information that bloggers, artists, and fans can use to protect their right to free speech and entrepreneurship via the open Internet.

I MET SAM back in 2004/2005 on the wonderful world of MYSPACE =) [What happened to myspace?!?!?!] and Tho 2004 doesn't seem like long ago, More has changed in the way of Music in the last 5 years than it has from 1990 -2000 - Obviously that huge changed was created by Myspace [THE DOUBLE EDGE SWORD] and by MYSPACE I just mean Online Social Networking. Add that and the passing of James Yancey (Jay Dilla Dee) and it led to A huge Explosion in the way music / beats / hip-Hop production has shifted.... In fact I don't even know what to call Beats anymore....Do you?.. HipHop? Electronic? Dub-Step,Warpy, WAng-fu who knows..... Good Music is Good Music to me, and Music + Percussion (Minus) Words = BEATS to me at least.......

Well SAMIYAM is A BEAST! It's crazy when you think about forks in the road and choices and how much the choices we do or don't make impact the entire earth..... and if you think that is bull-ish, Let me give you an Example: When I met Samiyam it was VIA myspace, I had just released by Solo album "JunkPlanet" years after it was finished so it was a proper representation of the music I was making at that time. I soon after released "Project: REACH" which was A Proper release for the time... Sam and I shared similar interests and I was working on my new album "The NEXT Final Fantasy" and ended up with 6 beats fro this genius beatsmith, and 3 others just to use for mixtapes..... (1 - of those 3 mixtape beats ended up on my Rawkus Release "Crush Your System" and the other 2 were lost in the great HARDRIVE CRASH OF 2006) Sam came down to Florida to look at School's and Athena (my Ex) and I met up with him in his Hotel in orlando....There we spoke about things while engaging in some fine herbal delites and he told me about this cat FLYING LOTUS he was creating music with back and forth from LA....He had his Laptop and I believe the Boss 303 / Don't quote me on that (sam correct me if i'm wrong) and played me A grip of NES Sampled beats and said he doubt he would end up going to school down here, but he wanted to show his parents he was up for ideas....I learned A few things about Sam that evening (1: He hates Rappers) and (2:He isn't fond of his older production i.e. the beats I have from him) now I like to think I have a golden ear and I think the production I have from Sam is the dopest to date.....I have held off on releasing my new albums for alot of reasons, but by summer 2o11 ALL WILL BE RELEASED..... I Actually have A joint I was going to use for Crush Your System titled "Shuffle Step" (feat. Buff1 & Finale) but are going to use it for another project.... In Fact All the joints will be released very soon..... Probably the next to surfice will be "BLOWED" which will be DISTANT STARR (STARRSKREAM) & myself - produced by SAMIYAM.... But back on those Forks in the road.....Imagine if Sam would have moved to Orlando, Florida and went to school instead of moving out west and making moves.......Think of all the traveling and touring he has done, all the lives he has touched all the musicians he has inspired............ The first time I heard Robert Glasper’s music was in the summer of 2007. I was hanging out with the homie phinydee in the jazz record shop he used to work at, in Paris. We were trying to finish Changes Of Atmosphere at the time, so quite often I would stop by the shop so we could discuss featurings, label deals, yadda yadda.. So anyway, Phinydee had In My Element playing in the background, and of course “Dillalude” caught my ear… “hold on, what is this ?!” But shortly we got back into babbling about distribution, mastering, budget and all that, so I didn’t get to give the album a proper listening. Until october 2009. A that time, Robert’s latest, Doubled Booked, was on heavy rotation at the crib, and after I twat (twitted ?) about it, twitters @FROactiv and @fwmj advised me to get my hands on In My Element. A couple weeks later I found a copy in Archambault in MTL, so I copped it, went home and played it and… DAYMN! This album is 1) very dope 2) absolutely full of samples. Some of the interludes are basically hip-hop beats already… So.. I was like, I can’t sample the whole album and get away with it, can I ? Can I ??? I felt guilty already, so I figured I might as well do it, but call it a remix album or something.. And I started making these beats. So there you go now, The Robert Glasper Beattape is up for free download. If you like it, please support good music by copping In My Element, you’ll like it too. For over a decade the Red Bull Music Academy has given young, upcoming artists a place to develop themselves. Not only do they learn, but a very important part of the RBMA is creating and exposing! What better way to do this than to record a compilation album together with fellow participants as well as more established musicians and sometimes even legends.

Under the name ‘Various Assets’ this has been done several times. These CD’s were never released to the general public and contain unreleased material as well as music that has been released like Flying Lotus his “Tea Leaf Dancers” featuring Andreya Triana. These compilation CD’s were recorded all over the world from Melbourne to Seattle and from Toronto to Barcelona.

We from Moovmnt had never actually heard all of this material and thought it would be a good idea to select our favourites and release it as a mix. Some music you might have heard on our website already, but I can assure you that some of this material has been waiting, hidden in the dust, to come out of your speakers and give you a taste of the wonderful things that are going on at the Red Bull Music Academy.

We tried to keep the mix close to our personal taste and yet it contains a divers array of different kinds of music. Enjoy some tasteful hip hop, nu-soul, future funk, soulful house, electronic music with a dash of dubstep to go out with a bang. Now we’re off to London to soak up some of that RBMA energy, so enjoy this one. We’ll be keeping you updated about what goes on behind the scenes at the Academy, so tune in for some exclusive footage, music, etc.

RBMA London: Day 01

You might have noticed that we haven’t been posting for the past days. We’ve been getting a taste of London and today our Red Bull Music Academy adventure officially started with a lecture by Flying Lotus. Stones Throw’s Egon hosted the inspiring lecture which covered everything from his music to his live set as well as deeper more personal subjects. Afterwards some of the participants showed us around the Academy to give us an idea of what happens around here. Lots of good music in the making, interesting workshops, a private Ableton class by FlyLo and even an unexpected birthday surprise for one of the participants. The next few days we will go more in depth on who’s here and what they’re doing as well as give you all an idea of what one can expect at the RBMA. Basically our first day at the Academy was wicked and good to have met 00Genesis, TOKiMONSTA, B-Bravo, Illum Sphere, Katy B and all the nice staff & crew from Red Bull. Last but not least a happy b-day to Jack aka Space Dimension Controller who just turned 20 hours ago!

RBMA London: Day 02

Our second day here at the Red Bull Music Academy started with an insightful lecture with Dutch DJ/producer Martyn. None other than Benji B asked Martyn about his musical roots, his inspiration and his way of creating his significant sound. We also saw a chance to interact with some of the participants such as Swede:art, Kidkanevil & Manzilla (Electric Wire Hustle) and get their take on their time at the RBMA. Ex-participant Oddisee stopped by to check out the new talent and will be blessing some of the material made in the past couple of days. We received a preview of a track that 7 of the participants worked on with Hudson Mohawke and got word that HudMo will be back later this week for more sessions. The evening was reserved for a live performance by a number of participants at Queen of Hoxton. While we’re posting this Space Dimension Controller, Nando Pro, Ross McHenry & Thompson are having a private little party in the lobby with Space’s 40 records he just got as a present. We’ve never heard Dilla’s beats bang as much as they do over this Genelec soundsystem.

RBMA London: Day 03

After two long days at the Red Bull Music Academy, our third day here started with a lecture by legendary UK DJ & A&R Norman Jay. Norman told the participants about his 40 year history in the music industry which spans from witnessing the birth of hip-hop in New York to founding the legendary Talking Loud label. After this we had the chance to catch some more previews of tracks being made here and in the late afternoon Kode9 stopped by to talk about his music and career as an independent label owner. The evening was dedicated to perhaps the most anticipated event of this RBMA, the Brainfeeder night in Fabric with a classic lineup of Nosaj Thing, TOKiMONSTA, Gaslamp Killer, Dimlite, Daedelus, J.Rocc, Flying Lotus, Dorian Concept, Martyn and Kode9. In between all of this we found some time to talk to some participants, as well as get some music from them for y’all to enjoy.

What has your experience at the Red Bull Music Academy been like so far?
It’s gone by really fast. At first it seemed like time went by slowly…the first couple of days. But now it’s just going too fast. I don’t want it to end, it’s paradise!

Out of the participants in your term who has caught your attention the most?
Ad Bourke from Rome, Space Dimension Controller from Belfast. Definitely those guys.

Has anything happened so far that will influence your music (from now on)?
Yeah. I mean I was sort of on to this a little bit before, but the common thread that all the lecturers share is that they just do their own thing. They don’t try to make a specific genre, they don’t try to create a certain sound. They just do whatever the hell they feel like doing and then that’s how they get recognition and that’s how they create new, creative, inspiring things. What I take away is…do you.

What’s the most valuable thing about Red Bull Music Academy in your opinion?
Probably just having the space for everybody to co-exist and ofcourse all the participants from around the world. Also all the studio techs, who are such amazing musicians and producers. The staff is so knowledgeable. All the lectures… everybody involved is so into music and connected in some way. They’re all part of something. It’s just great to all share the same air.

What has your experience at the Red Bull Music Academy been like so far?
It’s been really amazing man. You know getting to meet a load of people around the same age who are doing similar stuff or different stuff or people around the world. Making new friends as well. There’s a lot of people that I felt… we kinda like made friends, like who I can call up whenever I go to Singapore or whatever. Likewise for them whenever anyone’s in the UK I’m hoping they’ll come to Manchester. The food’s been wicked, it’s been fucking amazing actually… I didn’t have to worry about what to eat. The studio has been really good as well. Trying new gear and different set-ups. You know like original mini Moogs, fucking 909’s, 808’s and 303’s and blablablabla. It’s been really cool getting to know people like Benji B a bit better. Eventhough I’ve known him before, but now I can properly spend some time with him. It’s just been wicked. Really really good. None of us want to leave really.

Out of the participants in your term who has caught your attention the most?
00Genesis I think, cause I knew about his stuff before. He’s just super talented for his age. Also Juan Son who is unbelievable, I don’t know if you guys have seen him play. That guy has got a big future ahead of him definitely.

Has anything happened so far that will influence your music (from now on)?
Yeah I think that just learning about certain people’s recording techniques might change the approach that I… I can take some bits. Even the things Martyn was saying after the lecture. Like you should try and do that. So it can really benefit your sound or whatever. Getting to learn what the processes are of people like Martyn. And it’s definitely going to change how I make music for the better.

What’s the most valuable thing about Red Bull Music Academy in your opinion?
Pffff….the most valuable thing about the Academy… I think it’s just the RBMA as a whole. It’s hard to pinpoint one element of it that is the most valuable thing. The academy in itself is just insanely valuable. I haven’t even made much music since I’ve been here, but I’ve been making mixes for this, mixes for that. You know going on Benji B’s show, playing at his night, playing at Plastic People Thursday (CDR) which will be the first time I play at Plastic People. Shit like that is all happening in a space of two weeks. That’s the kind of value that it gives you. Guys like Swede:art and Hiro… it’s the first time they’ve been in London and they play at Plastic People. They don’t even have records out. That’s amazing for them. I just think the whole things has a value that’s unmatched. There’s absolutely nothing like it. Being here is essentially the most valuable thing about it.

RBMA London: Day 04

Our fourth day at the Red Bull Music Academy was also our last one. Today was a day filled with lots of interesting stuff. To start off the day synth pioneer Peter Zinovieff stopped by with some analog synths to tell the participants about the history of the synths. A very insightful and educational lecture, however it was pretty heavy for the time of the morning. Meanwhile downstairs in the live session room Andreya Triana recorded a live acoustic set for Italian radiostation Radio Deejay. Nev was lucky enough to be able to record video of the session, which will be available on here soon. Afterwards UK Roots & soundsystem pioneer Aba Shanti gave a lecture on the history of soundsystems and the importance of Roots. After this a whole load of people dropped by the RBMA. Oddisee and UK rapper Tranqill came in to record over beats by participants TOKiMONSTA, KidKanevil and 00Genesis while Andreya Triana sang a mindblowing hook. Gaslamp Killer stopped by shortly to say hi to some people before leaving town. In the evening there were two great nights, CDR at Plastic People did a special RBMA edition featuring live sets by participants Hiroaki Oba, Swede:Art and Illum Sphere. At The Scala B.Bravo opened for the 12×12 night which featured an allstar DJ lineup each spinning a 12 min set. Back at the RBMA, Fatima & Floating Points came through with a documentary crew who are following Fatima as part of a documentary on London artists. To top off the night we received a copy of the first pressing of Fatima’s LP too. At the moment most of the participants are in the middle of wrapping up their productions for tomorrow’s closing listening session. We’ll be posting our exclusive video & audio content captured at the RBMA in the next few weeks.

Recently Damon aka Dam-Funk aka the ‘Ambassador of Boogie Funk’ was in London and visited the Red Bull Music Academy to do a lecture. I must say I found it very intriging and too bad we had to miss this one. Hopefully next week we’ll have the honor of seeing Muhsinah, J.Rocc or even Flying Lotus on that couch. Really feeling D-F on never giving up on your dreams and letting nobody hold you back. Check out what else he had to say and get out the popcorn for this…enjoy!

Pe@ce World, So 1st off I did get all of your emails and I apologize for not replying. There HAS BEEN a huge Gap between posts and my reason for Hiatus was pretty dumb. For the past 2 & A Half Months all of my Attention & Energy was focus on one thing or one person rather. I told you my reason wasnt a good one but i'm glad you all kept checkin back everyday (You know I check my stats on the reg haha) 2nd I want it to be known that even tho I didn't post anything I do have a few posts in draft mode so over the next week there will be a Bunch of new posts tho the content might not be the newest. For Instance, I was going to post the STUSSY x DILLA shirt before it hit stores but didn't. I was going to do a post dedicated to a dear friend who past away 6 tears ago this month "Milton (REK ONE)" REST IN POWER ....But I didnt.....Also didnt post anything on Dilla Day..........So I figured for my return I would do the Dilla post....I mean, what more can be said that hasnt already been mentioned....

In other news, I have 1/4 of my new album "Romanticizing" finished.... I will be releasing A few MIXES before the release and I have been posting tracks that have been inspiration for the project as bulletins on my myspace.

Stussy and Stones Throw Records have partnered for Raph Rashid's classic pic of J Dilla on a limited-edition Stussy Tee. This will be released Feb. 13, 2010 in White and Black, available at stonesthrow.com and Stussy locations.

The photo was taken by Raph Rashid in Dilla's L.A. dining room-turned-studio, summer 2005, for his book Behind The Beat: Hip-Hop Home Studios.

This tee is officially licensed with J Dilla's heirs, who have recently announced a reorganization of the J Dilla Estate (read here).

Stones Throw will also be announcing a multi-city in-store release parties for this shirts. Stay tuned for details.

From the press release: "These photographs are about more than just the equipment. Decades on from hip hop’s birth, producers have an enormous presence, commanding underground and even pop followings. But more often than not, producers are just a name on a record, always in the background. These pictures capture the visual side of the beats they make. They are the images behind the beat."

The book includes a CD of several artists included in the book including tracks by Stones Throw's Lootpack and MF DOOM.

Author Rafael (Raph) Rashid runs a recording label called Crookneck in Melbourne, Australian, and is co-owner of clothing labels 'Blank' and 'Princess Tina'.
