It’s all downhill at the “Cardboard Classic” sled race

HOLLY, Michigan – Nothing much compares to racing down a snowy slope on nothing more than cardboard and duct tape, but its part of what makes Camp Wathana’s popular “Cardboard Classic Sled Race” so much fun.

With four different age group competitions, teams of up to three racers will compete to see which sled made entirely of cardboard glides across the finish line the fastest. Duct tape may be used to hold the cardboard sleds together, but wood, plastic, hardware, string and staples are off limits due to safety concerns. Paint can be used for decorative purposes and only the bottom of sleds may be waxed.

Be safe on the ice

I have to admit – I was a little surprised and somewhat concerned to see so many ice shanties and ice fisherman out on Bush Lake today. With temps pushing into the 40s, it’s safe to say that we’re not exactly in an ice-making mode on our area lakes at the moment.

In fact, it was just a couple weeks ago when we learned the sad news that a local fisherman lost his life by going out onto Harwick Lake in Groveland Township before the ice was thick enough to hold his weight, and the weight of his gear.

Ice fishing safety experts agree – four inches of clear, solid ice is crucial before you head out. You need to also be wary of snow-covered ice. Snow not only insulates the ice, preventing it from solidifying, but it also hides crack and open water areas.

HOLLY, Michigan – For the first time in its nine-year history, the Holly High School Equestrian Team is saddling up to ride into regional competition. The seven girls on the team, including five seniors who have been riding together since middle school, will be at the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds this weekend, said Vicki Dellinger, parent and secretary for District 1.

“We’ve been working four years for this,” senior Carolynn Que said.

With different members of the team specializing in different classes at the shows, Que is the only one whose horse competes in jumping, while senior Erin Miyamotl is great at trail riding. A weekend ago, senior Jessalyn Jarrell received a standing ovation from the judge when she took first in reining. Junior Margaret Dellinger competes in many events, receiving the high point award for Division B, and overall out of 179 riders. It was the first year for high point awards.

FENTON, Michigan - On a beautiful late Spring evening, the Holly Bronchos’ girls’ track team exacted some minor revenge by edging the Brandon Blackhawks in Fenton, Wednesday night by a slim margin 182.33 to 174.33. Keyed by a late effort in the 3200 meter run, the Bronchos were able to pull ahead and hold on in this second to last event of the evening. The Blackhawks finished the regular season at 8-0, with Holly’s only loss coming to Brandon while ending at 7-1.

On the boys’ side, the Linden Eagles used the dominance of sophomore star Ted Parcher to take the league title, holding off both Swartz Creek and Flint Kearsley for the win. The Eagles finished at 132 points. Creek and Kearsley had 115 and 111.5 points respectively. Holly was fourth at 96.5 points and Brandon finished sixth with 46 points.

FLINT TOWNSHIP, Michigan - The Holly girls’ track team ended the Flint Metro League meet season on a high note Wednesday at Kearsley. The Lady Bronchos swept the Fenton Tigers and the host Hornets, dominating Fenton 110-27 and Kearsley114-23.

The Holly boys easily topped Fenton but lost yet another close one, losing to Kearsley by a margin of 71-65. The Bronchos beat Fenton 90-47.

Led by a school record performance from senior Rachel Domagalski, the Bronchos made quick work of both squads. Domagalski topped the bar at 10-feet six-inches in the pole vault, improving on a school record she earned earlier this year. She bested teammate Avery Johnston and Fenton’s Tori Chapin by a full 18-inches.

FENTON, Michigan - The Fenton Tiger U8 travel baseball team, which includes several Holly players, is having a “season of dreams.”

The boys from Holly, Fenton, Linden, Grand Blanc and White Lake, have won four tournaments in a row and are sliding into an impressive finish.

Unlike most travel teams, the Tigers didn’t have 30 players from which to choose during tryouts – only 10 with two additional players joining the team later, Coach Dan Yoder said.

Since beginning their 4-month season in April, Yoder said the team has “gelled,” making minimal errors in the field, and hitting the ball well – so much so that the team captured tournament wins for the Clio Homerun Bash, New Lothrup Spring Tournament, Frankenmuth Summer Baseball, and Hartland Young Guns Kid Pitch.
