RS2

The many faces of the RS2

The Colorado State Fly. That's what this fly is. If you want to fish Colorado, I think they check your fly boxes at the borders to make sure you carry some variation of these flies. If not, they recommend that you get some as soon as you can. And for good reason. The original RS2 has been fooling trout in Colorado and surrounding areas for around 30 years. The name of the fly is explained below.

Soon Rim began to experiment with his own fly designs. He named his first successful fly Rim's Semblance, followed shortly thereafter by Rim's Semblance #2. He deliberately picked the word "Semblance" to indicate that this fly was not the imitation of any particular insect, which would have limited its function. Instead, the RS2 suggested a variety of insects. The RS2 proved to be an eclectic fly that has replaced all other flies (dries, emergers, nymphs, etc.) in Rim's fly box. The RS2 comes in many sizes and colors, but the shape remains unchanged as is the name.

Different variations of this fly have come and gone and their is always someone trying to add the latest and greatest bling to this fly to make it better, but I just don't think that can happen. The original is just that great of a fly. Born on the South Platte River, the RS2 is now sold and fished all over the world. This fly has stood the test of time. The many variations work well and some people prefer their patterns to the original. I prefer them all and have used the original the most and therefore have the most confidence in it. Even the original has variations. I tie 3 different variations of the original changing only the wing material. I don't know yet if one style is better than the other, but I will continue to fish and let the fishes let me know if they prefer one over the other. Tying the RS2 is fairly easy and it is truly a guide fly. Only using 3 materials a good tier can crank out a dozen in less than an hour. Listed below are a few of my variations that I carry in my box and ones I usually have tied onto the end of my line.

RS2 Antron Wing. This fly is a bit quicker to tie and is the one I use for guiding as it can be replaced quickly. A single strand of bright white antron is used for the wing. It can be tied in and measured and cut to length and it is ready for the next fly.

My version of Rim's original RS2 using natural beaver and the fluff from the base of a dun saddle hackle. Rim ties his using a really tight body and gets great segmentaion from the dubbing. I have not figured out how to get my dubbing that tight.

CDC Wing RS2. This RS2 uses CDC for the wing and works well as a surface emerger due to the CDC being able to float they fly in the film. This can be deadly when the fish are extremely picky and are eating emergers right in the film. This is my favorite version of the RS2.

Sparkle Wing RS2. The feather wing is replaced with a flat braid looped to add just the right amount of flash. This is a good fly to use when nymphing deep and the sun is out. The flash get the fishes attention and the profile is right. How can they resist?

Mercury RS2. Just slap a silver glass bead on the fly and you have another variation of the fly. This fly works as well as the original and can be just what you need on that slow day. I have fished this fly the least and don't quite have the confidence that I do with the others.
All flies are tied with either Iron gray or gray 8/0 thread. I use a TMC 101 hook for all variations of this fly. I also use either gray beaver or adams gray superfine dubbing. The antron wing RS2 is the easiest of the variations to tie. By using antron and superfine dubbing, it makes tying this fly faster and somewhat more durable. When guiding, I can burn through a dozen or more of these a day. If I have a trip the next day, the last thing I want to do is come home and tie a couple dozen complicated flies after a long day on the water. I carry sizes 18-24 in my boxes and mostly in a gray color, but I do have a few black and chocolate RS2s stashed away for those times when I need a different color. Some people swear by an olive RS2. I have yet to have fish turn down the gray or chocolate colors and do not carry any olive RS2s.

___________________________________________________
**Edit**Here are a couple videos for your reference.
A new updated version of this popular fly. I have deleted the previous video of this fly.

RS2 Sparkle Wing tied during the favorite South Platte patterns class on 01/29/10. This pattern is a varation on the famous RS2. Tie some up and give them a try. They work great for baetis and I fish them year round.
Like a big storm formed in the Pacific headed east, we all can see it coming. There is no doubt that the big hatch on the Arkansas is going to happen. Starting today, the weather and conditions will make sure it happens. There were some caddis out last week when the water temperatures were just right, for a little bit. With the cooler weather, the water temps dropped back into the 40s. As the air temps hit 60 and above, it will certainly warm the water enough for the caddis to pop. This weekend is forecasted to be in the 70s and this will mean the hatch will certainly move up river quickly.
What bugs to throw?
Larva: Pretty much any larva, but some of my favorites include Shea's Caddis Roller found at Royal Gorge Anglers (RGA), The Copper John in Chartreuse, Carl Pennington's Lucent Larva and Caddis larva, Larry Kingrey's Metallic Larva also found at RGA.
Pupa: My Royal Gorgeous Caddis is awesome this time of the year as is any of Larry's patterns and most commercial patterns. Also, the Colorado Caddis is great. The Royal Gorgeous can be purchased at RGA and Anglers Covey in Colo. Springs.
Dry: Furmisky's Fluttering Caddis in black is great. Mercer's Missing Link, X-Caddis, Bloom's Caddis , Peacock Caddis, Black Foam Caddis and many others.

For more info, go to Royal Gorge Angler's website or give them a call or stop by. They are top notch and will have all the answers. Bill Edrington has forgotten more about that river then most of us will ever know and Taylor is right behind him in knowledge.

Don't forget about the BWOs and Streamers!!!

Jackson and I made a quick run to the Ark yesterday. It was fun to get out. We only had a couple of hours to fish and he spent most of it playing, but he did fish some. It was a great day as it was his last day being 8 years old. Today, Sunday, is his 9th Birthday. Happy Birthday Jack!

There were only a few BWOs out today and I managed a few on dries. The rest came on RS2s.

Jackson only made a few cast and came up with this guy.

The real deal.

A fake.

Pretty realistic huh?

See that foam? A nice fish was rising to BWOs. Yea, I caught him.

I took out three rods on the lawn to conduct a mini shoot-out. The Orvis 9'5 wt. Helios 2 (H2), the Hardy 9' 5wt. 4pc. Zenith and the Hardy 8'10" 1 piece Zenith. What did I think? Here are some notes.

H2 with SA Textured GPX- The rod felt a bit heavier with this line. It had more swing weight than the Hardy 4pc. It cast the line just fine, but I felt like I had to push a bit harder.

Hardy 4pc. with SA Textured GPX- This rod also felt a bit heavier than with a standard line. The GPX felt good, but again as with the H2, I felt I had to push it a bit more. The swing weight was lighter than the H2 with the same line. There was a bit more tip bounce with the heavier line.

Hardy 1 Pc. This rod can handle the GPX line better, but I still felt it was needing a standard line. It matched better than the other 2 rods with this line.

My pick with this line: Hardy 1 Piece, then Hardy 4 pc.

          ___________________________________________

H2 with Rio Gold- This rod certainly felt better and this is the line for this rod. It was easier to cast and felt like a different rod. It was smooth and it was impressive.

Hardy 4 pc with Rio Gold-This was blowing the doors off the H2 with the GPX line on the H2. Once I switched lines, things evened out a bit. The Rio Gold line is great with this rod. It was certainly effortless casting this line and I felt this was one of the smoothest casting rods I have ever cast.

Hardy 1 Piece with Rio Gold-If I didn't have this rod, the Hardy 4 pc. would be top dog. Well, this rod is top dog. It cast great with the Rio Gold. With 2 inches shorter, it makes a difference. So does a single, continuous blank.

          _____________________________________________

H2 with Rio Classic, a standard size line-This line felt good with this rod, but I would use the Rio Gold for this rod.

Hardy 4 pc with Rio Classic, a standard size line-This rod handled it just fine. I would use the Rio Gold for this rod also, but it felt better on this rod than on the H2.

Hardy 1 pc. with Rio Classic, a standard size line-This rod felt just fine. If you used this line on this rod, you would never question it. This rod is just that good. _____________________________________________

H2 with a Cortland Precision, a standard size line-It felt great, but I still think the Rio Gold is the one for this rod.

Hardy 4pc. with a Cortland Precision, a standard size line-This line felt really good on this rod. If I were to choose between a Rio Gold and this line, it would be hard. Actually, I don't know if this line is made any more, so I guess the choice is clear, however if it is still made or there is a similar line, I would blink twice putting this line on this rod.

Hardy 1 Piece with a Cortland Precision, a standard size line-This rod can handle the widest range of lines than the others. It worked just great with this rod. _____________________________________________

After spending about an hour casting these rods, I would say that the Hardy 4 pc., in my opinion is a better feel for me than the H2. It is close, but I would have to say the swing weight on the H2 is a bit heavier and more noticeable. A Hardy with a Rio Gold vs. a H2 with A GPX is no contest. The Hardy felt so much better, but when you switch lines, it wasn't so apparent. At that point, I would give the edge to the H2 in feel as the GPX line is just too heavy for me on the Hadry. At this point, you are really splitting hairs. Both rods are special in their own way. The Orvis H2 is lighter in physical weight, but the swing weight is heavier.
Even with these two top notch rods dueling it out, the Hardy 1 piece rod is the top dog. It handled the various lines better than the other 2 rods. It was lighter in physical weight than the other 2 and the swing weight was lighter also. Remember that it is 2 inches shorter than the other 2 rods. But it just handled everything better and felt the best to me. The Hardy 4 pc. would be my second choice using a Rio Gold or even a Standard line. It was able to use various lines better than the H2. The H2 was right behind the 4 pc. with the Rio Gold, but because it was only liking the Rio Gold, it wasn't as versatile as the other 2 rods using the same lines. The SA GPX isn't the best choice for these rods and I would recommend a Rio Gold or a standard size line for these rods. There may be better choices out there, but this is all I had to use for my testing. I hope this helps people out there decide what lines may work better for a rod, but you really have to go out there and cast them and get your own feel for these rods. Rods and lines are just like socks and shoes. Some feel better with different socks and not everybody likes the same kind of shoes or socks. Just because I recommend a shoe, will you go out and buy them with out trying them out? No, at least I hope not! Let me know if you have any thoughts on this.

Spring on my mind

It's this time of the year that I start hearing how great the fishing is. I know it is great. If I were a fish, I would be happy that I am starting to see more bugs drifting around including more baetis nymphs and more caddis larva and more stoneflies. As a fisherman, this is the time of year to really enjoy it. There is nothing better than a cool, dark day to bring up the BWOs and the fish. I absolutely love this time of the year!

Almost ready.

This is a great piece about the area of Northern New Mexico where the Rio Grande flows. While I never spent much time on the west side of the Sangre de Christos growing up, it was just over the mountains. While living in Los Alamos, I grew to love and hate the fickle Rio. It was where I learned that nothing in fishing comes easy and that no matter how good you think you are, the river always calls the shots. It is a humbling river.

Today, the Rio Grande was designated as a National Monument. This protects it from over development and for future generations to enjoy, just as we have. Click here for a better overview of the new designation of the river.

This is great news as it was a community driven process. Lets hope that there will be more designations of rivers who need it.

Keeping with the theme of rods, I'd like to share with you some thoughts on the Hardy Zenith Fly Rods. I like to fish with the rods before I go spitting out my thoughts on the different rods out there. Casting the rods gives us all a great idea of how they feel, but it isn't until we rig them up and cast them that we really know how they feel and act on the water. As some of you may know, I recently picked up some Hardy Zenith fly rods. Let me start by saying that these rods and all the hoopla about them is just not people making some noise. These rods are the real deal and these rods, I think, are the pinnacle of modern production fly rods today. The 9' 5wt., 4 piece rod is as great as it can get. It has great feel and power. I started using these on guide trips last year when I needed a rod to cast dries up close and none of my faster rods had the feel to make those casts up close. The rod excelled at throwing the small stuff within 15' with feel. They also could throw the streamers as needed and the nymph rigs were very easy to cast. The 9' 5wt. is as versatile as they come.

I just received a 8'6" 4wt. and fished it yesterday on the Arkansas River. I landed 5 fish, all on dries with this rod. That was great, but I was really enjoying casting this rod. It is super accurate and effortless to cast. I can see this being a great guide rod for chasing BWO hatches and trico hatches. I was hesitant to get one as I had that rod length in the past and never really used it much nor did I have a great connection to it. This rod is completely different though. I instantly fell in love with it. It is that good. I figured you would only need two rods in your arsenal; a 9' 5wt and a 8'6" 4 wt. At least that is a good start to cover most bases. Both rods can cover it all for trout.

The 1 piece rods are available also and these rods are just sweet. If I say the 4 piece rods are the smoothest rods available, then these rods are just a notch above them. Less transportable they are, but I think they are more versatile than the 4 piece rods. Many people say there is no reason for a 1 piece rod. If that is your feeling, then cast one and you will have a different opinion. If you still think that is B.S., fish with one and you will want one. These rods cast a bit differently than the 4 piece rods. They are better, dare I say. Using the correct lines on any fly rod is important and on the 1 piece rods, they work well with a Rio Gold. A standard SA Trout line would work great as well, I just haven't casted it yet on these rods. There isn't a lot of info on these rods on the internet and as time permits, I hope to provide more info on these rods as I fish them more. I would suggest that you at least look at them if you can. Sage, Winston, Scott and Orvis all have great rods and some people are loyal to them as was I, but these rods are just that good to not give them a shot. Look for more reviews in the future, but for now, find a shop that carries them and give them a shot. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I cast a rod and I liked it!

I am a gear whore. I can't deny it anymore. Actually, I stop denying it several years ago. I just have to remind myself every once in a while that I am. I love fly fishing gear. Why? I haven't quite figured it out yet. There is just something about all the cool stuff out there and all the new stuff that comes out almost everyday. In particular, my obsession for fly rods seems to be sticking my wife in her side. If I were able to obtain and amass houses the way I do fly rods, and then turn around and sell them to buy more houses, I would be pretty well off. I would be in a great position in life. Well, I don't deal with houses. I deal with fly rods.
Fly rods are almost like electronics. Like phones, and other devises, there seems to be new technology and updates to current rod models every few weeks. If you try to stay on top of it all, you are bound to have a bit of trouble with the partner.
There are two rods on my radar right now that will make my life complete. One is the new yet to be released Orvis Helios 2 in a 9' for 4wt., tip flex rod. I just know by casting it, it will make me happier on the water. The other rod is not a new rod, but one that has been in the current line up for a while. The thing is, I finally casted it today at the Colorado Springs Fly Fishing Show and now, I wonder why I don't have it in my quiver. It is the Scott G2 8'8" 6wt. Never mind that I have the 3-5 wt. in this series. The 6 wt. rod will also make me a happy person. I won't even get into the "other" rods that are on order right now, but let's just say they will make my life that much more enjoyable. Gosh, It sounds as if my life is centered around fly fishing and gear?

The Orvis Helios 9' 4wt. is a dreamy rod. It's light, fast and smooth as a Costco concrete floor. It is the one rod that really shines in that series. The 5wt is not bad either, but as I said today, it's not the 4wt. This rod is in control the whole time. Your mind and arm knowing what to expect throughout the entire casting stroke. Like I said, it is smooth and perfect.

The Scott G2 is a "different" rod. Being 8'8", it feels different. Picking it up, my first thought was that it was a bit heavy, but I had just put down a 2wt. so maybe that had something to do with it. It felt as if it was going to have a heavy swing weight and a clunky feel to it. As I casted it, it felt almost out of control as the power of the butt pushed the rod but while it skated the line of out of control-ness, then the strong mid section and the soft tip took over and a sense of total control took over. Ty Clifton, the Scott Pro member on hand and I fumbled for words to explain it and finally came to the conclusion that it felt like controlled chaos. It was a great feel and my mind could only think of those NASCAR cars going into the turn, hugging the high wall, only to come out in a controlled manner on the straight away. You would think something bad was going to happen, but it was a controlled chaos. That is how this rod feels. It is awesome and like nothing I have ever casted, even the 5wt in the same series.
The butt is strong and the tip is soft. It could throw big streamers and #24 trios, no doubt about that. It felt strong and powerful and then the tip took over gently flinging the fly over and landing softly. I can't explain it and neither could Ty. He just warned me that if I casted it, I would want one. Yea, I want one. Now I just need to figure out how to get the funding for these 2 rods. I've already offered my Scott S4 9' 4wt. for sale and have no takers as of yet, but if you are interested, please shoot me an e-mail. Gosh, this is getting bad and I sure hope my wife doesn't read this. I may have more trouble on my hands than trying how to figure out how to buy 2 more rods. Thanks Ty.
As I casted my flies into the small rapid of water, I shouted to the youngster across the pool from me. "Hey, did you see that?" It was one of the brightest rainbows I have ever seen. It came up in the fast water, eating something off of the surface......

David Knapp of The Trout Zone blog and I were finally able to met up to fish together. We have been planning this for a few months now. When I heard that he was relocating to Colorado from Tennessee, I figured that I would invite him to go fish together. Usually, these things never work out as he wasn't even going to be in the same area as I am in. He moved up north and I am in Colorado Springs. The good thing about that is that Colorado Springs is on the way to Pueblo! We hatched a plan to fish in Pueblo. It is a great little tailwater, unlike any other tailwater that I have ever fished. It has gained some well deserved attention from anglers all over the state. Over the years, the fish have grown and on any given day, you can catch a 20"+ fish. Of course, there are smaller fish if you don't want to discriminate.

We started off slow as we worked our way up stream, looking to see where we could squeeze in. It didn't take long to find a spot and start tossing out our flies. I took 2 rods with me. I usually don't take two rods on the water, but what the heck? You have twice as many chances to tangle up right? I rigged them differently and added a different midge on each one of them. I figured they were eating small bugs and the guess paid off. After a few minutes I had on the first fish. It was on a #26 Rainbow Warrior. That fly and the #26 Foam Back Emerger, proved to be a good choice for the day as all the fish I caught ate the #26.

David didn't take too long to start hooking up and had the first bigger fish of the day. These fish are colored up and are as bright as anything I have ever seen.

He continued to hook and land fish. I experimented with the Foam Back Emerger and it was just not what they were wanting. I went back to the Rainbow Warrior and it was fish on again. Crazy how that works. Just small differences on the patterns, but it made a difference. We both agreed that the flash must be what they were looking for at that time of the day.

As the day progressed, we moved around a bit and found some more fish. Perhaps one of my best fish I have ever caught was at the hole pictured below. It was a great fish, but what will I will forever remember is how I watched the whole thing unfold in about 4 seconds.

As I casted my flies into the small rapid of water, I shouted to the youngster across the pool from me. "Hey, did you see that?" It was one of the brightest rainbows I have ever seen. It came up in the fast water, eating something off of the surface......It was a beautiful fish and he just ate something off of the surface. As soon as those words left my mouth and my smile relaxed, I said to myself, maybe he ate my Foam Back Emerger......I did just cast my flies into the water right before the fish ate something off of the....... I immediately raised the rod and felt the hook set and the fish start moving towards the rocks. David was re-rigging and watched the whole thing unfold.

Whenever you fish with someone new, you never know what to expect. I was pretty sure that David could fish. I have followed his blog for a while now and I have been jealous more than a few times with his trips and his time on the water. It was evident that he was fully capable of adjusting to the new landscape and the waters he now calls home. We fished and walked and walked and fished. It was not hurried, it was a relaxed day of fishing. We didn't try to get in too many last casts. We didn't want to stay all day and try to catch as many fish as we could. It was just good to get out for both of us. It was fun and that is what it is all about right? New friendship and some trout. We strolled back to the car to head out and grab a bite to eat. That was my kind of day. Relaxed and good. There will be more adventures in the future as I am already working a plan for an Upper Arkansas River trip. Stay tuned.

If you live in or near Colorado Springs, you need to head over to Angler's Covey to check out the fish aquarium they have in the lobby of the building. A Trout Unlimited project which originally started out as "Trout in the Classroom" has been expanded to "Trout in the Community" with Angler's Covey as the pilot site. Colorado TU has had some five schools involved in the Trout in the Classroom program, which raises native trout in the classroom and uses it as learning experience where students monitor water quality, learn about trout habitat, environmental stewardship, and ultimately release native trout into the wild. What a great program! And now we have Trout in the Community taking off at the Covey. Back in December, Dave Leinweber hosted a pint night with some wicked beer on tap and cool commemorative glasses to raise money for a new aquarium. Last month, the aquarium arrived and was assembled. A few weeks ago, water was added and the pumps were running, and not long after that, there was a small basket with about 100 tiny eggs. Much joking about treading on the redds and an easy snack on Ritz crackers gave way to a new joke about fishing with a size 34 hook and a piece of spider-web tippet when the little eggs hatched. Now the fun starts. The hatched fish were booted out of the nursery and immediately did what fish do--they hid in the rocks for safety and survival. They are hard to see, but that doesn't keep me from looking about every five minutes when I'm at the Covey. Check out this video and then get over there to see them in person. They are changing by the day.

It's not a new pattern. I call it the Money Midge because of the price to make it. Putting Tungsten beads on a TMC 2499SP-BL hook makes for a great pattern, but a costly one to produce. This is one to go after if caught in a tree or snagged on a rock. But it will catch fish. I promise.

Best test

A.K. Best stopped by my table this weekend and checked out some of my flies. He told me I had a lot of flies. I asked him if he wanted to buy some. He laughed. He also looked closely at one of my patterns. He said it looked good. It was thin and sparse just as it should be he said. Whew! I guess I passed the "A.K. Best test"!

I posted this on my Facebook page. If you haven't yet, stop by and "like" the Hopper Juan page. I share little tie-bits and photos there that usually don't make it here. Click on the Icon to be taken there.
It has come and gone, but man was it fun! The 2013 FFS was great as usual and it was awesome to meet up with old friends and to meet some new friends. Many of you stopped by to thank me and to tell me that they enjoyed this blog. That really means a lot to me and energizes me with more ideas and more passion. Bringing you great content is something I strive for. Thank you to all the readers out there for supporting me over the years.

It seems like the tiers this year were more than usual and that was great. The usual Denver area guys were there cranking out some of the world's best fly patterns and some really innovative patterns. I think this area has the greatest concentration of great tiers than anywhere else. Let me know if you agree. There were a few highlights to the show. One has to be seeing Howard from Windknots and Tangled Lines Blog. With what has come to be a yearly tradition, he stopped by to talk and show me his Fiberglass Manifesto shirt. This year as we were chatting, Mike Broward showed up repping the FM shirts. How do these guys find each other?

Keeping it real

MFC Tier, Casey Duncan

The powerful Shea Gunkel

I was also able to meet Josh Udesen, an artist and areally cool guy. His art work graces the water bottles and fly boxes of Montana Fly Company. Check out his work Here. We were trying to work out a barter involving some orginal artwork and a fly box, but since he has more shows scheduled in the coming weeks, we will hold off. The photo above has him thinking really good and hard about the deal.

Capt. Bill and Molly with Royal Gorge Anglers.

Many of you may know who April Vokey is. If not, I ask you if you really are a fly fishing fool or not? April is one of the hottest (literally) names on the scene these days. She is a B.C. based Steelhead guide that is taking the world by storm. While she is not your typically looking guide, she is the real deal and a hoot to be around too. My buddy Jake Ruthvan from Fins On The Fly blog was lucky enough to spend some time with her and I even think she has a crush on him. What a problem to have right? April will be joining the Montana Fly CO. design team this year, so you will see her patterns coming out soon also.

Another highlight of the show was getting to meet Phil Rowley, a long time fly tier from Canada. Phil is one of the most recognized stillwater tiers. When the FFS first came to Denver in 2001, I made the trip up from New Mexico and Phil's book was the only thing I bought. I used that book to learn patterns to fish on the lakes of Northeastern NM and when I met Phil, he mentioned that he loved this blog and followed it regularly. That was such an awesome compliment. We hit it off and he is just an awesome guy to be around. I am sure we will be lifelong pals. I had him sign that book and it feels like this show has come a complete circle. I bought a book and followed this guy's instruction for tying and now he is watching me tie flies. Wow! Phil, I appreciate your friendship and thank you for all the inspiration and instruction over the years.

With that, I will unload all my crap and tie some more flies. What else would I do?

It's that time of the year again for the shows in our neck of the woods to begin. I will be in Denver this weekend twisting up some of my favorite patterns. I will have some Hopper Juans and Hollywood Hoppers for sale as well as Hoper Juan kits for sale. Stop by and say hi. I look forward to meeting new faces and followers of this blog and saying hi to old friends.
Pull out the foam and Super 77, order some eyes and legs and get started.
