Hey guys.. been super busy recently, so I will have to take a break from this blog. But don’t worry, I won’t stop eating! ;) I’ll be back soon!

Seems like this blog has more coffee posts than food posts, but I can’t help it, I love coffee. :)

The Famous Nutella Mocha

The Verdict: Dose is a very cute little coffeeshop on broadway with amazing coffee! They know how to make a good expresso. :) Definitely try their famous Nutella Mocha if you get the chance, so yummy! Their inside is small but has character, and they feature some sweet art pieces on their walls. Oh, and the owner is super friendly too.

Happy Drinking! -J

This was at 49th Parallel, I’ve only been here a few times but I’m going to have to add it to one of my favourites. :)

Soy Latte and a Very Delicious Pain au Chocolat

Gyokuro Green Tea (玉露)

The Verdict: Really nice indie coffee shop in vancouver. Very friendly, educated and skilled staff. Coffee is without a doubt delicious, and their Pain au Chocolate is absolutely scrumptious. I was surprised how they actually knew how to brew Gyokuro correctly (since it wasn’t a tea shop afterall)!

Happy Drinking! -J

We weren’t that hungry after filling up on coffee and amarettis, so ramen was the perfect choice for a light meal.

Shoyu Ramen

The Verdict: Not the best ramen I’ve had, but very decent quality compared to what I had in Japan. I quite like their shoyu soup base and how light it actually was. The noodles were a good consistency. The gyozas were decent too, but I still prefer the ones at Santouka better. Would I come again? Of course! The interior reminds me of the cute little ramen shops in Japan and there are no super long line ups.

Happy Eating! -J

Tea Steeped in a French Press
I love it when coffee houses serve tea with the same care they put into coffee. If you like London Fogs, try their Earl Grey Tea Misto (ask for vanilla if you like it sweet like I do). They serve you steamed milk (or Misto) on the side, so your tea can steep in the press separately (which enhances the flavour of the tea). Once it’s finished steeping you can then pour the milk and tea together. It’s pretty fun!

The Verdict: The coffee here is beyond delicious and you really can taste the care they put into each cup of coffee they make. I definitely recommend trying their Amaretti, it’s yummy, but I wish it was bigger because I can’t just have one. It’s also a great place to meet up with friends and/or people watching at the window. :P

Happy Drinking! -J

This time I sucked it up and waited.. a total of one hour. Luckily, it was well worth it.

My favourite quote, and how I choose to live my life. :)

Watercress, avocado, tomato salad.

The verdict: Brunch is definitely worth waiting in line for. They don’t take reservations, so be ready to wait. Their food is not the run-of-the mill (north american) “brunch food”, it’s gourmet and it’s Belgian. Probably one of the best brunch places I’ve had in Vancouver. It’s great place to brunch with friends, and I adore the atmosphere here. I will for sure be back again for brunch (especially for more of their delicious waffles)!

Happy Eating! -J

This time it was no different, except for the tiramisu I spotted in their baked goods window. :)

Spanish Latte and Tiramisu

The Verdict: Great cafe with nice modern decor and delicious coffee (49th parallel). I would recommend their spanish latte. It’s a nice place to sit and chat with friends and business clients. I don’t get why some people complain about their lattes, maybe they had a bad barista experience? So far, it’s been good for me.

Happy Eating (and drinking)! -J

At first I didn’t know they did lunch, so I was pretty excited when I found out. So I kind of decided to change up the format of my blog posts, and cutting the reviews short and using it mostly like a (food) photo journal.

Black Ramen
Oxtail, Chicken & Pork all mixed broth with soy based sauce & pepper)

The Verdict: Suika does lunch, and they do it beautifully. I highly recommend trying their Black Ramen, the soup base is so delicious (I licked the bowl dry), the meat is melt-in-your-mouth tender and the consistency of the noodles is perfect. The tuna tataki? Simply scrumptious.

Happy Eating! -J

Wait.. what? Yes, I used to hate coffee. But how was that so? The problem wasn’t really that coffee tasted bad to me. It was that I had nothing but bad coffee most of the time. I didn’t know better. Until about 5 years ago, my coworker, who was a self proclaimed coffee snob introduced me to real coffee. It changed my life. I eventually became a coffee snob.

One of my favourite places for coffee is Caffè Artigiano, and I always order their spanish latte. It’s so delicious. But what is a spanish latte? To keep it short, it’s like the usual latte (so espresso with steamed milk) but with the addition of condensed milk. However, there mustn’t be too much condensed milk that it becomes too sweet and overpowers the taste of the coffee. Caffè Artigiano uses the perfect amount, where it truly complements and enhances the natural sweetness of the coffee beans. Mmm…

The Final Verdict: Their coffee is delicious and always consistent. The people there know the art of coffee making. If you like condensed milk, try their spanish latte, it’s my favourite.

Happy Drinking! -J

One of them is Duotian Fish Soup Noodles, and I decided to try it out for the first time with the family since we were hungry and it was close by. When I look at their menu for the soup noodles, <strike>it reminded me of</strike> it was a direct copy of Deer Garden/Cattle Cafe, where you can build your own soup noodles. So, you choose a soup base, type of noodles, 2 toppings, hot/cold drink and choice of side orders (additional $1.50).

Rice Noodles in Sichuan Spicy Soup with sliced beef brisket and beef balls
This soup just can’t compare to the soup base I had at Deer Garden. It lacked the complexity of Szechuan’s spicy-ness (麻辣), the kind that will kind of make your mouth numb, yet still carries the flavours of the spices and peppers. The beef brisket was thickly sliced and weren’t even cut properly. It was cut with the grain (instead of against the grain) making it really chewy—but the flavour wasn’t bad. The flavouring of the beef balls were pretty good, most likely not handmade though. The noodles also came with a drink, so I chose HK style coffee, and it was not good. Sorry I’m a coffee snob, and the coffee was weak. I’ve drank tons of coffee in HK, this was not HK style coffee.

Side orders: Pan-fried Pork Chop in Maggi Sauce and Garlic Spicy Chicken Wing
So I think “Maggi” is just derived from the chinese name “美極”, not really sure if they just made it up or there’s something special about it. Either way, there was nothing special with the pork chop. Neither was there anything special with the chicken wings.

The Final Verdict: Copy-cat of Deer Garden/Cattle Cafe, but not as good. Food is not too bad, but if you’re paying the same prices as Deer Garden/Cattle Cafe, then might as well go there instead.

Happy Eating! -J

I think I pretty much had it everyday and didn’t even get sick of it. It does help that every ramen shop was different and there was pretty much a ramen shop on every street corner. On sunday after the macarons at Soirette, B and I went to Santouka because we were both craving Ramen. :)

Pan-fried Pork Gyozas
We always start with gyozas here and they are always so delicious and succulent. The saltiness of the pork is perfect, and if you like spicy (like me) then dip it in some of the chili oil they supply. B likes to have it with the vinegar. Either way, it’s so good. My mouth is watering as I think back about it.

Kara Miso Ramen with Green Onion Bonito Don and a side of Kimchi
This was my bowl, it was so yummy like always. I love miso and I love spicy, so this was a perfect pairing of flavours for me. For now, I have yet to find a place other than Santouka in Vancouver that can compare to the quality of ramen I had in Japan. Maybe since the Santouka here is actually part of the original Santouka chain in Hokkaido, Japan. Oh, the green onion bonito rice was also a nice complement with the ramen.

Miso Ramen with Ikura Gohan
This was B’s bowl. Ever since she got introduced to salmon roe by her bf, she developed a love for it. I’m not much of a fan, but judging by how fast she finished her food, it was probably really good.

The Final Verdict: Santouka is my favourite place for ramen outside of Japan. The place is always busy and there’s always lineups, so I’m sure it’s many others’ favourite too. They also have super friendly service that reminds me of being in Japan. A must try!

Just for fun, check out this cool infographic about ramen.
Happy Eating! -J

On sunday, B and I went there for macarons and tea and was very very pleased. The friendly server was a little surprised that we had such a big appetite, ordering a plate full each, as I noticed that most of the people who were sitting down at their tables only ordered one plate to share, haha. :)

Macarons Macarons Macarons!
As some of you probably already noticed from my blog posts, that I’m a macaron fanatic. I just can’t get enough of these heavenly treats. And yes, I have made them before, and they are a pain to make. Getting them right takes quite a bit of practice, a decent amount of skill (and lots of luck, in my case).

(backrow) Malibu, Cappuccino, Passionfruit, Rose
(frontrow) Rocher, Lavendar, Caramel Fleur de Sel, Matcha
Although I’m a macaron fanatic, I have high expectations. Just by judging the macarons on appearance alone, Soirette has already scored top marks for aesthetics. I really like their subtle decorative elements. Their meringue shells are near perfect. They are smooth, eggshell-like and has with the ever important “foot”. Upon first bite, they are super crispy. The texture of the inside has the right amount of moisture and chewiness and not dry. The fillings they use are mainly ganaches, which I much prefer over buttercream.

Lavender Grey Tea Latte
Those that know me, I am also very picky with teas. I need my teas to be strong in flavour, but not bitter, brings sweetness to the tongue but can’t be too sweet, and most of all, it must be aromatic. This cup of lavender grey satisfies all those requirements. As I mentioned aesthetics, I really like details on the macarons here, notably the brush stroke on the cappuccino macaron, it’s so pretty.

As you can see, they have a nice range of flavours. Picking a favourite from the bunch was so hard, but if I must, I’d say the caramel fleur de sel. I know it’s not the most unique of flavours, but I really like their version. I love plays on sweet and savoury, but it must be done right, or they will cancel each other out. Oh and B really liked their Rose flavour.

The Final Verdict: Probably the best macarons you can get in (downtown) vancouver. They don’t use any dyes and make all their macarons in house. The teas are also of high quality. A must try!

Wow, didn’t mean to write such a long post. Anyway, happy eating! -J

Last thursday, I finally got to try Faubourg in Kerrisdale! :) I walked by a couple times and they seem to be always packed. I was pretty lucky to get a table for two within 10 minutes, but I would advise all of you to call ahead and make reservations.

As some of you may know, the basic high tea etiquette is to start with the bottom tier first with the savouries and then work your way up to the sweets. But we actually had the soufflé first because our server said that we should start with it as it would start falling. :) Oh, and it’s also bad etiquette to use your phone or take photos at the table, but we did that nonetheless, oops!

Cucumber, roast beef sandwich with coriander cream & chicken, apple with country ranch dressing sandwich.
Faubourg is famous for their desserts, so I didn’t have high expectations for their sandwiches. The sandwiches were actually pretty good, but I found the roast beef a bit too dry.

Smoked salmon and wasabi cream wrap & scones served with cream and jam
The smoke salmon wrap was so yummy, I wanted seconds! The scones were (oh-my-god) so good. It was light and melt in your mouth crumbly and the cranberry gave it the perfect tartness. I’ve been to many different places for hightea, but so far Faubourg has the best scones.

Mini opéra, mini lemon tart, blueberry puff pastry, strawberry cheesecake, raspberry
soufflé & chocolate mousse
Last but not least the parisian pastries! :) My favourites were definitely their (famous) lemon tart and raspberry soufflé. The lemon tart was so deliciously gooey, the tart shell was beautifully made and the addition of rock sugar made the perfect contrast. The soufflé was hot from the oven and so very airy—it was a real soufflé! Aside from the Eiffel Tower restaurant in Vegas, this is one of the best I’ve ever eaten. The blueberry puff pastry was very light and flaky and the strawberry cheesecake quite scrumptious as well. However, the 2 chocolate desserts were a little too sweet for my liking. But don’t get me wrong, I love chocolate and I love sweets, but these were just a bit too sweet.

Teas: Earl Grey, French Breakfast, Marco Polo, Fuji Yama, Vert Provence, and Bourbon (decaf)
I went with their special Marco Polo tea as my friend highly recommended it. I almost always would choose Earl Grey, but they ran out of it anyway. I thought the Marco Polo tea was a great compliment with the food and I’m glad I chose it. It was a sweet and had a subtle fruityness to it.

The Final Verdict: If you love high tea, you must try Faubourg. I don’t get why people complain about the price, for $25, it’s well worth the price for the quality of food you get. Only complaint? How come there are no macarons? :P

Happy Eating! -J

Just realized I haven’t posted for a whole week! I’m really sorry guys, been super busy packing to move. But here’s a little sneak peek of the next blog post. :) Finally got a chance to try Faubourg last thursday. I promise to post about it real soon, so stay tuned. :)

Whenever we go for bubble tea, there’s only like 3 places we usually go to, one of them is Bubble World. It’s without a doubt one of the go-to places for sit-down style bubble tea. It’s a small place though, so you may run into long line-ups. I think friday nights are the worse for line-ups, but we got lucky and didn’t need to wait too long.

Every time I go, I have to get their Salty Peppery Chicken Nuggets (鹽穌雞). B and I shared a plate this time because it was after dinner, but we devoured it in no time. Aside from the chicken nuggets, they also have a pretty good selection of taiwanese style snacks, rice and noodles. For their bubble teas, they have a wide range of fruity, milky and specialty flavours as well as different kinds of teas (reds, blacks, greens..etc). I got myself a taro slush with pearls and B got a honey lemon green tea. Their bubble tea is always consistent and I never get disappointed. Some say their pearls are the best, and I have to agree with them.

On a side note, I do have a weird fetish when it comes to slush + pearls though… I like it when the pearls get a little frozen from the coldness of the slush and they get slightly harder but still maintains its chewiness. It’s good like that, trust me. :P

The Final Verdict: Bubble tea is always good here. Yummy taiwanese snacks. Be sure to try their salty peppery chicken nuggets (鹽穌雞). Slow service, but not bad service. Good place to sit and talk with friends and they won’t kick you out. :)

Happy Eating! -J

I normally don’t see the need to flip past the first two pages (signature noodle combo) of the menu. For the first time, I came for afternoon tea and decided to give their snack menu a try. I ordered the French Toast ($4.95) and it comes with a hot drink (with the option of cold drink or specialty drink for $1-2 extra).

Like any kind of HK-style French Toast, it was filled egg-based custard spread and deep fried, but I was surprised that it wasn’t fried whole but cut into pieces first. This gives the toast more crust, but becomes more on the greasy side. Each piece of toast was also topped with a small slab of butter and a cup of syrup to drizzle.

The Final Verdict: Definitely a good price for what you get and quite filling too. The french toast was a little on the dry side if not slathered with syrup, and would be better if provided a jug of syrup rather than just a small cup. Wouldn’t say it’s the best I’ve had, but will most likely come back for it. As for service, when it’s busy, you’d be lucky if you can actually get the attention of the servers. Afterall, it is an asian cafe, don’t expect service to be the best.

Maybe it’s not your “conventional” quick bites kind of food, but I consider pho to be a “quickie” because you can dine in and be out in less than half hour. It’s pretty good for a quick lunch. If you ask me what would be my go-to restaurant for pho is, it has to be Bao Chau. I practically grew up eating these noodles.

The secret behind pho is their soup, every restaurant has a different taste. My favourite has to be Bao Chau, I have yet to find another place that does the soup better. The sad thing is that they seem to have made their portions smaller over the years, but I don’t mind it. Eating a small bowl with their famous springrolls is enough to make me pretty full. If you’re extra hungry, then get the large. Oh and did I mention their famous spring rolls? Well I’m normally not a huge fan of spring rolls (I hate most asian spring rolls), but Bao Chau sure makes some good tasting vietnamese spring rolls. Possibly some of the best in town.

Ok maybe I lied a little, this post is not entirely french-free because I must compliment vietnamese coffee. For those that don’t already know this, vietnamese coffee is inspired by the French, and they were the ones who introduced coffee into Vietnam in the 19th century. The fun part about vietnamese coffee is that the coffee is always individually brewed with a small metal French drip filter (cà phê phin) into a cup with condensed milk (I looove condensed milk). If you’re ever at a vietnamese pho restaurant, try their coffee. Their coffee is dark, so if you’re sensitive to caffeine, be warned! :P

The Final Verdict: Yummy Pho. Great spring rolls. Try their vietnamese coffee. Don’t expect it to be the cleanest place in town, but it’s clean enough. I almost always order their #8 (rare beef, beef balls and tripe), but alot of people order their house special #1 (it has pretty much everything, but I don’t like tendons).

Happy Eating! -J

B, AC (guest foodie) and I finally got a chance to dine here last week during Dine Out Vancouver and I totally regret not doing it sooner. The meal was near perfect and a wonderful dining experience.

Complimentary bread: brioche with bacon bits, anchovy cheese twists, and poppyseed sesame crisps.
Very rare do I go to a french restaurant and get something other than baguette and butter. Those that know me, know that I have an on-going love affair with baguette and butter. But L’Abattoir sure knows how to be creative. The brioche with bacon is to die for. Ok, maybe I’m overselling it because of the bacon, but it really was good. And B couldn’t stop raving about the cheese twists.

Country style pork pate with toast, pickled vegetables and apricot sauce
I’m normally not a big fan of pork, especially pork pate, but this was really good. It kind of looks like canned ham from the afar. The pickled vegetables were interesting, with the perfect amount of acidity to go with the pork. I liked how the ratio between meat and bread was 1:1.

Poached egg with potato gnocchi, leeks, mushrooms, pecorino sabayon
This was B’s appetizer, she’s very particular of leeks and only likes them if the taste doesn’t overpower the other ingredients. She really enjoyed it and I really liked the deep fried leeks, so yummy.

Warm steelhead and fried potato salad with smoked pork fat, dill, horseradish
This was AC’s appy, I forgot to try it (I’m not really a salad kind of girl), but he said it was really good. He was pretty impressed with the fish.

Duck breast and leg meat sausage, buttered green cabbage, pan fried German noodles
Alright, I really love duck, and especially duck breast. I didn’t expect the duck to be wrapped with sausage but this was really really tasty. I hope L’abbatoir adds this onto their regular menu because I need more of this duck sausage. The only complaint I have is the german noodles, they reminded me of chinese hand-cut noodles. It tasted too bland and starchy. I would have prefered just duck and cabbage. Or maybe just duck, no wait, lots more duck—four pieces of duck was not enough.

Earl Grey pot de creme with Lemon shortbread, whipped milk
To sum this dessert up, ultimate foodgasm in my mouth. Everyone knows I love tea, especially earl grey tea, and this one really hit the spot. They also serve jjbean coffee, so I had to get myself a nice espresso macchiato to go with it. Perfection. I literally licked the bowl clean.

Wine Pairing: Tantalus Riesling 2010
If you ask me what my favourite type of wine is, it’s definitely Riesling. I usually prefer German Riesling over any kind, but this was one of the suggested wines, and I was very impressed. It had a near perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, and went very well with all the dishes I had. B had to drive so my other friend and I finished the bottle, it was for the best anyway. ;)

The Final Verdict: L’Abbatoir is a total gem in gastown (or at least I think so). Delicious and creatively crafted food. Perfect ambience. Beautiful interior. And unlike the majority of restaurants in Vancouver, they actually have a sommelier. A must try in Vancouver. Definitely make reservations because they seem to be very busy all the time, and who can blame them?

Oh and in case you’re wondering what “l’abattoir” means in french, it’s “slaughter-house”. The name is clever and fits perfectly for their location, previously gastown’s meat-packing district, right by the infamous Blood Alley.

Happy Eating! -J

Well at least not many that everyone in the city participates in. Dine Out Vancouver is one of the very few. This year, looking through the list of restaurants, trying to skip out major food chains, I managed to pick out a couple that I really really liked. Bistro Pastis was the first one for me this year!

House Smoked Salmon Tartare, Capers, Crème Fraîche and Croutons
This was so fresh and the seasoning was perfect, lemon juice and capers made excellent complements. Maybe a few more pieces of crouton would be nice, but didn’t mind just eating the fish alone. The suggested wine, Pinot Gris from Kelowna Art paired very nicely with this dish.

Escargot Gratiné, Mushrooms, Parsley, Garlic Cream Sauce, Watercress Salad
You really can’t go to a french restaurant and not have escargots. The sauce in this dish was delicious! It was creamy but not too creamy, if you know what I mean. Sometimes sauces with escargot are too thick and rich, but this one was perfect for an appetizer.

Crispy Duck Confit Cassoulet, Braised White Bean, Red Wine Jus
One of the best duck confit I’ve ever had. The skin is so crispy but the duck is exceptionally moist. So yummy. I did think the portion of white beans in this dish was too much though.

Grilled Pacific Cod, Potato Gnocchi, Sweet Peas, Chorizo, Calamari, Citrus Beurre Blanc
The cod was succulent, cooked just right. The texture of this dish was quite interesting with the calamari and gnocchi. I quite liked the soft and chewy.

Dark Chocolate Mouse, Almond Biscotti
You can really taste the chocolate in this mousse. But it’s not as light as I like my mousses. It’s rich but not too sweet. I think I was a bit too full to enjoy it. I do like gooseberry and strawberry with dark chocolate.

Crêpe Suzette au Grand Marnier, Vanilla Ice Cream
The Grand Marnier sauce was very pleasant but the crepe itself wasn’t too exciting. Feels like a bit too much sauce which makes the crêpe quite soggy. Definitely tasty nonetheless, but not spectacular.

The Final Verdict: Very well sized portions, not pretentious at all. You will definitely be full. The main courses and appetizers are wonderful. The desserts are good, but probably not their main strength. Very nice ambience and excellent service. I definitely recommend trying this place out for sure. I’ll be back for their duck. :)

Happy Eating! -J
