Hi, y'all!

Sorry it's been a while, but I've been job searching and that has tied up a lot of my time. Anyone else out there looking for work? Whether you want something better than you've got or whether you'll take anything if you could get it (I'm somewhere in between), job hunting is the nads. IT SUCKS.

In my case, as in many others, it's fairly easy to find part-time or temporary full-time work, but it's difficult to find permanent full-time work.

Where my job search is a bit different is that I am especially prepared to work in academia, and there is a specific audience to prepare for. There is also generally a lengthy application process consisting of several rounds of submitting materials and several interviews. At some point, I can't not think of RuPaul's Drag Race. Which is good, because it cheers me up.

Get ready to lip sync... for your life! Good luck, ...

Top 10 Tuesday: Advice from The BWH

This week's topic from The Broke and the Bookish is... The Top 10 Tips for New Book Bloggers.
Well.

I'm really pretty new to book blogging, though I've been a bookworm and have been writing about all kinds of texts for a loooong time. Truthfully, I'm a little burned out on writing about writing. It's my job. Literally. I teach college English, and while it's the best job, like, EVER, it's still a job.

But anonymous book blogging has been--IS--therapeutic for me. It's rekindling something in me that I want to keep sacred: reading for pleasure.

So... in no particular order, here are 5 thoughts I have about blogging books that compose my book blogger biography.

1. Read other book blogs. There are a billion out there, and if the first few don't have a subject or a voice that works for you, keep searching. I'm a YA fan, a Brit Lit fan, a Southern Lit fan, a fantasy and sci-fi fan, a nonfiction science writing fan, a Buddhism writing fan, a Golden Age of Children's Lit fan--just all over the place. And it's taken me a while to create a circle of peers.

2. That leads me to how to find a circle of peers. Looking for a meme to join and finding TTT has been a great source of inspiration. I mean, I spend all day reading and writing as my job, so coming home to do more of it is not really the thing I always want to do. 'Til I found TTT.

3. Through TTT and its huge Linky following, I've been exposed to many different kinds of book bloggers all looking for traffic, opinions, recommendations, etc. I've also found out out about a ton of new books I want to read, which is awesome.

Finding a community as diverse as this one composed of people devoted to weekly lists taught me a lot and has exposed me to blogs I might never have read otherwise, like Whispers of a Barefoot Medical Student, Good Books and Good Wine, and Books, Bones, and Buffy. You should check all three of them out if you are interested in book blogging; they're way more prolific and experienced than me.

4. After each TTT posting, I visit several posters through Linky and provide feedback on their lists. Doing this as faithfully as I can each week has helped me establish a bit of a relationship with a few bloggers.

5. The last thing I'll say here is to simply be gentle on yourself. If I can't post every week, or can't list 10 items, I just do what I can. Doing what you're able but not pushing yourself too hard helps you make sure you always do post at least a little something, keeps the task fun rather than annoying, and lets you be creative.

6. Bonus. Here are a few things I'd like to work on: adding more visuals, finding and commenting on even more blogs, posting twice a week (whoa, who do I even think I am?!), putting up a book review or two, and maybe even posting an original story or poem.

Question: what advice about book blogging, or blogging in general, do you have? I'd appreciate anything you have to offer, too.

Top 10 Tuesday: Deceptive Books

This week's Top 10 Tuesday is The Top 10 Books That Were Totally Deceiving. However, this week I'm going to take it easy and just write about one book that was deceiving in some way. I choose Robert Louis Stevenson's 1885 A Child's Garden of Verses. This collection, like Stevenson's other famous writings, such as Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Kidnapped, and Treasure Island, was and is extremely popular, though many people do not know that Stevenson also wrote poetry for children.

My favorite of the collection are the ones that address the imagination and the ones that on a second read contain a kind of critique the mindset of imperialism that would ask children to grow up and conquer rather than to grow up and live in productive peace. Both sorts ask readers to consider different, new perspectives. Here are a few samples. I wonder what you think. Are you surprised at these at all, and why or why not?

Pirate Story

Top 10 Tuesday--Er, Wednesday: 1 Day, 1 Book, 1 Comfy Chair

This week's topic from The Broke and the Bookish is... The Top 10 Books To Read In A Day. So, I've got this comfy recliner in the living room, bookshelf to my right, picture window to my left, probably a cat in my lap. Rain streaking down the pane, rain in the forecast all day long. A pile of books at my feet, each one just lengthy enough to fill the day but not overwhelm it. They are...

10. Barry Hannah's The Tennis Handsome. A friend just recommended this to me, and I've yet to read it. If only tomorrow were a day off!

9. Pretty much anything by Amy Tan. I've always liked her novels (The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God's Wife, The Bonesetter's Daughter, The Hundred Secret Senses), and there are a couple newer ones I haven't gotten to yet. Rules for Virgins would be a great one-day read.

8. It's time to re-read A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Have you read it before? Brief and curious, a version of adolescence haunting a version of adulthood.

7. A collection of short stories by Thomas Hardy to thumb through: Life's Little Ironies.
Have you read Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Far from the Madding Crowd, Jude the Obscure? If so, try the short stories, they're a good complement to Hardy's novels and poetry; if not, try the short stories, they're an easier way in to Hardy's prose if you're not ready to commit to one of the novels.

6. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I can't believe I haven't actually read the Harry Potter series yet. Huns, someone needs to loan me these books, ASAP.

5.Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. Especially nice to read in October.

4. Hocus Pocus by Kurt Vonnegut. I actually read this one while I was on vacation in Mexico one time.

3. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. Another book about war I read while on a vacation. Apparently I really like to read military fiction.

2. Patricia Gaffney's The Saving Graces. A gossipy book about grown lady best friends? Yes, please.

1. Heidi by Johanna Spyri. A comfort book. I've read it over and over again since I was a child (yes, the edition at the link, too), and it never fails me.

Loaded Chicken Eggrolls

Happy Sunday! Here's a great recipe I make on Sunday's to keep in the freezer for the week for quick dinners and lunches. You can throw a few in the oven or the microwave (oven tastes better, in my opinion) It's really easy to make and full of low-fat tasty ingredients.

(1) 12.5 ounce can of 98% fat free chunk white chicken breast

(4) cups fresh cooked spinach (or 1 small frozen bag, defrosted)

1/2 cup uncooked vidalia onions, diced

(1) medium tomato, diced

1 (1/2) cups fat free shredded cheddar cheese

(1)1 Tbsp garlic powder

(1) tsp onion powder

(1) tsp ground cumin

(1) tsp table salt

(1) tsp black pepper

(15) egg roll wrappers

(1) tsp table salt

(1) tsp black pepper

Butter flavored cooking spray

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Drain spinach very well. Ring it out as best as possible. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl, except for egg roll wrappers and butter flavored cooking spray. Mix all ingredients well (I usually use my hands to get a good even mixture of chicken, cheese and spinach). Once all ingredients are mixed well, start with a corner of the eggroll wrapper and put the mixture in the wrapper and roll it up. Here is a link to rolling egg rolls (with pictures). This should make approximately 15 eggrolls.

Line a cookie tray with aluminum foil. You don't have to do this, but it makes for VERY easy cleanup. Once you are done cooking, just roll up the foil and you don't have to clean the tray. :)

Place the eggrolls on the cookie tray and lightly spray the tops with Butter flavored cooking spray or spray butter. Bake for 10 minutes, flip, spray the other side lightly with cooking spray, and bake until golden and crispy (usually another 10 minutes or so, oven times may vary)

I usually don't bake all of them at once. I bake what I plan to eat in the next two days and then freeze the rest. I mark them with a date in a freezer ziplock bag and the point value so I can pop them in the oven on work nights and have a quick, easy dinner. I just add a side of rice.

The Points Plus value per eggroll is 3 points per eggroll or about 210 calories per eggroll.

Beautiful Craft Spaces

A big part of getting ready for the baby has been cleaning out my craft room. Luckily, when we bought the guest bed we saw this situation was hopefully coming so we purchased a twin bed that would look good in any room. I'm impressed with the durability, but my gripe is with the center support because you bang your toe on it every time you get close to it. Oh well! It looks beautiful against the grey walls!

Although I'm sad to have gotten rid of half my craft room, I was pretty excited to make it feel fresh & new. Here are some spaces that inspired me to declutter and reorganize everything beautifully!

This week's topic from The Broke and the Bookish is... The Top 10 Books I'd Play Hooky With. So fitting. It's spring in Oklahoma where I live, and the weather is in that nice stage before it gets OMGSUMMERHEATSTROKEHOT. Here are some books I'd like to run away with.

10. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson. Having made my way through the first two in the trilogy, this one's up to bat. Now to acquire a copy and find the time to get into some trouble with Lisbeth.

9. The novelized version of J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan. I just read the play, and I'd love to follow it up with the novel version that Barrie wrote afterward. So much Edwardian escapism.

8. Diana Gabaldon's Dragonfly in Amber from the Outlander series. Oh yes.

7. Jean Rhys' The Wide Sargasso Sea. I'm hankering to re-read this.

6. The Letters of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Another re-read. Their love story is made to be read via their letters to and about one another.

5. Rachel Dratch's Girl Walks Into a Bar... A recent book by a funny lady.

4. David Sedaris' When You Are Engulfed in Flames, one of Sedaris' I haven't read yet.

3. In Love and Trouble by Alice Walker. I love her stories. I've been thinking about the short story "Everyday Use" lately and wanting to re-read it alongside the others in the collection.

Zesty Italian Tilapia Bake

We are a family of divided tastes. I have been on my Weight Watchers diet since September, and my husband is not on a diet of any kind. The Nugget will try most things but is faithful to pasta with red sauce, hot dogs, and chicken nuggets.

Finding a dish that we all like can be a challenge.I thought of this idea when I was craving Italian food but didn't want to splurge on pasta with my points. Its very simple and got two thumbs up from the husband and the Nugget. It's easily prepared in about 5 minutes and only takes 25-30 minutes in the oven. Perfect for a busy school or work night.

Zesty Italian Tilapia Bake

4 pieces of frozen or fresh Tilapia

1/2 cup of fat free Italian salad dressing

2 large tomatoes, diced

1/2 cup of reduced fat Parmesan cheese

sliced black olives

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Put fish in a glass baking dish and top with Italian dressing. Bake for 25 minutes, then top with tomatoes,Parmesan cheese, and black olives. Bake for 5 minutes or until fish is done.

This recipe is about 240 calories per serving or 4 Weight Watchers Points plus per serving. I pair it with green beans and a side of mashed potatoes or rice.

My Cure for Morning Sickness!

It seems that no one has the exact cure for morning sickness or if they do they don’t want to share the wealth! Most women experience incredibly bad morning sickness but I’ve been lucky and have only been battling very light, but very annoying, woozy feelings on and off for weeks now. I absolutely could NOT have gotten this far without the following friends!

1. Stride Spearmint gum! I 100% could not have managed without this gum! I’ve always been a sweet mint or winterfresh girl, but it seems like my tastes have done a complete 180 degree turn. This takes any woozy feeling away almost immediately. I buy it in bulk :)

2. My sweet tooth is in overdrive right now. I’m constantly thinking about where I’m going to get my next goodie! Keeping these in my purse keeps me from b-lining it straight to the nearest cupcake store! Seems like if I’m salivating I’m not feeling sick, too.

3. Oh Cheetos! Again, something else I never really liked before but I find myself wanting. The carbs fight the woozy feeling so well. One friend told me Fritos saved her life so that’s why I tried Cheetos. Unfortunately, I’m allergic to the dye in these so I only eat them when I’m feeling really desperate.

I’m honestly shocked at how much my tastes have changed. Never have I ever been a fan of a sausage but my husband offered me a bite of his and I ended up eating half of his breakfast! Hope I save someone’s day or first trimester!

Hoping The Two's Will Not Be So Terrible

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope everyone had a safe and fun St Patricks Day. I got to visit with The Bookworm Hun and her little family last evening as well as another close friend. It was nice to just sit and visit and eat bacon cheeseburger pizza!

My Nugget has learned some not so great new habits this week. Hitting and slapping. I know it happens to most kids and its just a phase they are going through but its still frustrating. He thinks it's funny, even when I discipline him but telling him no or grabbing his hands and putting them to his side.

Here come's a little bit of parent bragging, so get ready. He's a smart little guy! Just two months shy of his second birthday he knows all his basic shapes, colors, the numbers 1-10 and the alphabet. So I know he's smart enough to get the concept that hitting is not something we do. I know it will take time and patience from Mama and Dada and he'll get it eventually, but its still embarrassing to have your 22 month old slap you across the face and giggle. This is just another reason why taking a toddler anywhere is hard work. We try to focus his trips on fun activities (going to the park, visiting grandparents) and avoid taking him with us on mundane tasks (groceries, errands) whenever possible.

He's a very wonderful, sweet boy though. If you ask him to be nice he will pet you like he pets the dogs at my parents house and then give you a big kiss. You can tell he is just trying to figure out how things work and what he can get away with. I can only imagine what he thinks is going on in his little world and how much he is processing and learning every single day. Just like crawling, walking, talking it'll eventually "click" and he'll get it. Nugget has been the best lesson in patience for me, and I am grateful for that. He has taught me that everything will come in time, you just have to be patient. Sometimes it is rough (like are you ever going to consistently sleep through the night?!?!?)..but it will pass.

Any advice for this Mama Hun or stories about your little ones and their terrible two's would be greatly appreciated. Have a great week everyone!

March Madness 2012: Let's Get Ready To Bracket!!

Hey sports fans! Another Selection Sunday is in the books and it was relatively drama free compared to some in recent history. Sure there were some notable snubs and several miss-seeds but overall I believe the selection committee got it right this year.

Did your team get invited to the Big Dance???

Okay so now that we know who's playing who, how do we pick the winners?

Quick back story about me; I've been filling out a bracket for damn near 20 years! My Aunt manages a bracket pool for family and close friends every year. Even before the existence of online brackets, I remember eagerly awaiting the newspaper to arrive on Monday morning with the blank bracket on the back page. I would fill it out and follow along with each game, carefully circling the winners and marking through the losers. Its one of my fondest memories and I can't tell you how much I love this time of year!!

Allow me to impart some tips on how to pick the winners... And hopefully you will avoid March Sadness!

1. A #1 Seed has never lost to a #16 Seed, EVER- In the history of the tournament.

2. A #12 Seed will beat a #5 Seed at least once but never more than three times in the first round. Look for an upset.

3. Don't worry about seeds when picking between the #8 and #9 teams. These are usually a toss up.

4. With the exception of 2008, the Final Four has never been occupied by all of the #1 Seeds. History shows your best bet is picking two #1 Seeds to advance to the Final Four.

5. If you get stumped on a particular game just ask yourself, "If these mascots were to fight, who would win?" Seriously... why not :)

How do you pick the winners? Strictly chalk? Record? By mascot? By team colors? History? Cuteness of the coach/players?

The Huns Review : Chobani Yogurt

The Huns are always down to try something new and we definitely love giving an opinion so we decided to get together as a group and review Chobani brand Greek yogurt. Read on and find out what each Hun thought of Chobani!

“MMmmm this is SO good” is what my husband was hollering from the kitchen when he tried Apple Cinnamon! We’re both huge fans of Chobani Greek Yogurt, but were a tad skeptical of this flavor. Most of the time Apple Cinnamon items are too cinnamon for my taste, but this had had perfectly mild and wasn’t overwhelming! All the apple chunks were small and soft just expected! We both rate Apple Cinnamon high on our favorites list, but my husband said Peach is still his #1 love!!

In the last year I’ve developed a slight obsession with pineapple. It was only natural that I picked this flavor to review and it absolutely did not disappoint! Love all the soft pineapple chunks at the bottom and how smooth the yogurt is, it’s the perfect amount of sweet for me, too!! What I love most about the product, no matter the flavor, is that I always finish feeling satisfied! Most of the time I eat Chobani Greek Yogurt as my 3 pm snack and it always tides me over to dinner and gives me an extra spurt of energy at the gym.

I tried three of the flavors: honey (6.5/10), lemon (7/10), and mango (7/10), and I liked them all right. I like the density of the yogurt and the tartness with just a little sweet at the front of the bite. I think the honey flavor could be stronger. We make our own cow's milk yogurt at home with a Yogormet yogurt maker, and this rivaled it--though I still prefer homemade in taste and texture.

I also prefer homemade because you can use sustainable, local, ethical, inexpensive ingredients and lessen environmental impact. For storebought, I think Chobani's as good as Brown Cow or Stonyfield Farm, BUT I wish it were organic like Stonyfield Farm yogurt is. While it's good that Chobani doesn't use milk from cows treated with rBST synthetic growth hormone, I think they could be doing more walking and less talking when it comes to being "green." Like most mass-produced "environmentally friendly" food, they're doing a little greenwashing. I appreciate that Chobani buys local milk where they are, but I would rather lessen the carbon footprint of the product by buying dairy products made closer to where *I* live so they don't have to be shipped here and so I can support farmers and dairies in my area. An example of a dairy product made locally is Greek Style Yogurt from Wagon Creek Creamery in Oklahoma. I do appreciate Chobani's Shepherd's Gift program, but other yogurt makers like Browncow have similar donation programs, too.

I've been Weight Watcher-ing (a nerdy term I made up) since the end of September and in the last few months I picked up the Pineapple Chobani (recommended by The Thrifty Hun) and instantly became addicted. Growing up we had a dessert my Aunt Wee made all the time called "Pineapple Squares", a rich creamy pineapple-y concoction that is one of my all time favorites. Pineapple Chobani reminded me of that. So of course I had to try every other flavor I could get my hands on. The Raspberry 0% is my second favorite after the pineapple flavor. It is my go to after dinner treat. I always add a little extra to mine though. Take a 6 ounce Chobani 0% (any flavor), add some slivered almonds, and a dollop of fat free Cool Whip. I've been eating it for weeks and still not burnt out. A certain Nugget boy really loves it too, and we share one every night. I love that it's rich and creamy, and tastes more decadent than it is (calorie wise). I also use fat free 0% plain Chobani to compliment many of my meals. I have replaced my sour cream with it, and make a ranch dip with a Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning packet. Its versatile and I love that I can buy a small tub and use it for multiple recipes.
