Get ready! October 8-11 is Diane K. Nardone’s 9th Annual World Hustle Championships; held at The Hilton, East Brunswick. Known as one of the largest Hustle events in the US, WHDC is given kudos for a well organized and smooth Operations staff, great music and the great vibe amongst the attendees.

Speaking of the NY Hustle Congress, there will be a West Coast Swing Room at the Hilton Hotel this year. On Sunday night, the Jack & Jill contests will be held from 9 – 2am, Two time winner of the Professional “Theatre Arts division”, Raul Santiago, has been added to the staff and will be hosting a workshop on Friday. Raul also won the Professional “Just Hustle” and “TriDanceathon” for the last two years.

Mickey B is bringing Disco Back
Every resurgence has a power source, a stimulus, to ignite the fire. Mickey B, with over 45 years in the entertainment business is on a mission. He is ready to re-light the disco inferno. He has done it all, from radio to television and everything in between. He was given the name “Prince of Rock & Roll” becuase of the numerous contributions he has made over the years. He grew up as the King of the Catskills , MCing at an early age and making a name for himself. For 18 consecutive years he hosted the New Year Eve Gala at the Hyatt Cerromar Beach Hotel. Mickey B. has fond memories of his Catskill days and the dozens of hotels with the non-stop dancing and entertainment. These cherished memories have lit a fire of encouragement for Mickey B. to launch a new wave of dancing. “It’s time for couple to get close and start dancing cheek to cheek again”. That being said, on November 7th, the “Saturday Night Disco Fever”, will take place. I saw in your newsletter stating that there is a new event or competition coming called the WSDF? Can you share with us more???? I think having more events is great as long as they don’t overlap on another scheduled event with similar type dancing!!! I have spent the last 20 years in product development with a major food distributor in Fort Washington, Pa. Competition in any field is healthy. It makes everyone work harder to produce a better product, some what like – survival of the fittest. Is this an East Coast event???? Waiting to hear more. Hope your having a beautiful summer.

Muscle Tone: Ballroom, Country and Latin dancing, when done at an intermediate to advanced level of technique, use the perfect blend of isometric and isotonic resistance, the two key ingredients to muscle building and toning. The blend and use of the muscles
is perfect for building beautiful tone without building a lot of muscle mass, a big concern for women in particular.

Joints: According to the American Journal of Medicine, the best way to avoid arthritis and remedy current joint discomfort is to continue to use the joints in a controlled manner. The rise and fall of Waltz answers to this beautifully.

Spinal Column: The frame or posture maintained in dancing places the spine in a natural and correct position, even more correct than when standing or sitting naturally! That also puts all your organs in alignment, which is now thought by many doctors and chiropractors to fight sickness, disease, fatigue and more.

Respiratory: Many track greats know that a strong set of lungs get plenty of oxygen, which makes the heart work easier, which in turn allows us to dance and have fun longer! That’s why sprinters run a lot of “wind” sprints: brief bursts to up the heart rate quickly, then bringing it down and doing this repeatedly. This is similar to the effect on the heart in dancing.

Tyrone Ebo
Growing up in Northeast Philadelphia gave him unlimited exposure to the sports, mom & pop businesses and the fine arts. He was drawn towards the fashion sector but he had a greater calling. Living in a home that vibrated from music, Tyrone Ebo, would muti task at an early age, knocking down all those doors of opportunites. He had music in his blood. His father played the saxophone part time in a jazz band while his older brother became a national singing artist. As a student of Temple University, Tyrone majored in business administration. At night, after he closed his books he partnered with his younger brother Ken to co host promotional parties, fashion shows and glitzy dance events. They would typically rent halls, hire dance teachers and bring in Disc Jockeys to play the music. Their goal was simple: deliver something different and exciting to attendees. For the Ebo brothers, they perceived the concept of tucking the DJ away in a hidden corner as bland. Tyrone wanted the DJ to be transparent, visually entertaining, dead center of all the action. With a great love for dance and music, Tyrone applied his savvy business skills, in efforts to reduce the over head and improve the quantitative results. He decided to enrich the atmosphere by personally DJing at his own events. “We were playing music that included a show, singing, dancing, entertaining, so those in the audience were always entertained”, explains Tyrone. “We use to have Joan DeMarco teach dance lessons at our events”, shares Tyrone. “I was just a street dancer that watched and learned”. He didn’t’ get just good he went from ordinary to extraordinary. His free style sent the crowd into a roar as folks would clear the floor just to watch him. He would continue to perfect his steps as he would frequent some of the popular clubs in the Philadelphia / New Jersey market, where he did everything from free style to touch dancing. He loved “The Big Apple”, “The Library”, “Some Place Else” and “The Second Story”. When he visited New York, ” he patronized ‘Paradise Garage’ and the ‘Red Parrot’. Like the music he spun, he was creating a name for himself thru the disco grapevine, that’s when he received a call to audition for a DJ position in the Sheraton Hotel. He had interviewed for the spot but was rejected by management based on his asking price. Then a couple weeks later, on his 21st birthday, he received a call back. The club was in dire straits and needed an established DJ, for that very evening. “I took all my records, about 20 cases with me” explains Tyrone, ” I had never been there before and I didn’t even know what type of music I would be playing”. The club was packed as the popular singing group the ” Dovells” were performing. The format was designed for the DJ to spin records during the bands breaks. Tyrone pulled out his crowd pleasers, “Soul City Walker” and “Turn the Beat Around, ” but to his surprise nobody danced. After the next set, as he peeked out from behind the curtain, he experienced the same results, nobody was dancing to his music. Once the manger pulled open the curtain providing an unobscured view of Tyrone doing his thing, the dance floor became packed. His style mobilized people to want to dance. He had a pulse on the synergy of combining the music and the energy of dancers. In 1974 he accepted the DJ job spinning at Cahoots located in the Sheraton Hotel in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The club would continue to hire popular bands while Tyrone would spin during their breaks. Then in 1976 they became a dedicated disco where the DJ was the center piece. The new upscale design had a glass DJ booth where you could watch Tyrone dancing and putting on his show. The country was energized with the discotheque phenomenon that was spreading from coast to coast. The hotel management was aggressively looking for cutting edge concepts and sent Tyrone around the country to research ideas to help enhance the club. The owners had the foresight applied due diligence to create a unique club setting. Tyrone now worked exclusively at the new club which was renamed Scintillations. This would be come his new home until 1989. Scintillations was recognized as the number one club and maintained that status for the next five years. Behind the turntables every Monday thru Saturday you would find Tyrone. Driving the success of the club went beyond just physically spinning the music. He was responsible for presenting a monthly calendar and business plan to hotel management. With an entrepreneurial spirit he developed a creative business model with new innovations to draw customers in on a daily basis. “We loved to create a reaction from the crowd”, explains Tyrone .”We put dancers on the speakers way before anyone else did “. Creativity was abundant in the Ebo family. Tyrone’s older brother David became the lead singer for the popular band “Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes”, after Teddy Pendagrass left the band. David remained the lead singer for the next 15 years. His younger brother Ken became a radio DJ with FM station WDAS, in Philadelphia, and was the DJ at “Club Impulse” located on Broad Street in Philadelphia. The Ebo brothers quickly befriended “Club Impulse’s” manager, whom today is none other then the honorable City Mayor, Michael Nutter. Tyrone was committed to the club setting 24/7. He was an active member of the Pocono Record Pool and then Bob Pantera’s Record Pool. He accepted a reporter position for Billboard Magazine providing them insight on the up coming hot songs. Every week he would post his top song picks for the magazine. Major record labels depended on knowledgeable DJ’s like Tyrone to help break a new song getting it the exposure and ultimate air play it required. A representative from MoTown Records brought the single “Momma Use To Say” by Junior, for Tyrone to play. “He brought it to me first, I was the only one playing it at the time”, shares Tyrone.
” Promoters would come to you to break the song in. The records ultimately would go Gold”. For 15 years, Tyrone would be at the helm of one of the most popular clubs in the tri state area but he made a critical decision to make some career changes. His older brother David had an incredible singing career with the Blue Notes and then a solo album including the big hit “I would rather be myself”. David tragically passed away at the young age of 43 from Bone Cancer. His death had a profound effect on Tyrone which subsequently made him take stock of his own career and life. Tyrone always loved fashion and the garment industry was where he desired to be. He already had the skills to make his own clothing and he had even owned his own tailor shop. It was now time to grasp this career opportunity.
He’ll never forget the incredible memories of ” Scintillations” which later became “Club Shadows” and now ICE. Over the years spinning, he has amassed a collection of over 20,000 vinyl records. One of his greatest memories was when he met singing sensation Diana Ross at the club. She was performing at the Valley Forge Music Fair to promote her hit “I’m Coming Out’. Her management wanted to keep her visit at Scintillations low key but, Diane had her own agenda, as she wanted to visit the DJ booth. She asked Tyrone to play her songs and the club went into a frenzy once they saw the Diva in the DJ booth. Tyrone continues to keep his hands in the music business as he will be co hosting the up coming 30 year reunion of Scintillations. It will be held on October 2nd, Friday night. It will feature Tyrone, the original resident DJ along with some of the original dancers and staff members including Ron Campli and Dave Wenntin. It takes place at the old Scintillations Club, now known as Club Ice at the Old Sheraton in King of Prussia. The party starts at 6pm. It is with extreme sadness we report the passing of a gifted dancer. Jason Colacino was a star. He brought such charisma to his West Coast Swing dancing. A versatile dancer that had GQ looks, incredible dance skills and a warm caring heart. Diane Nardone and the World Hustle Dance Championships will be graciously hosting the first public forum addressing the concerns for the Hustle Future. This will be an open discussion where attendees have the opportunity to ask questions, give suggestions and discuss this important topic.
Based on an Editorial discussion initiated on Dance Talk, this important discussion which generated a lot of proactive comments & participants are archived at The Hustle Lounge.

The forum will be moderated by Asia Bautista (The Rhythm Lounge) and Ron Bess (DanceTalk) on October 9 & 10. There will be an 8 person panel fielding the questions on how to grow the hustle and attracting new dancers to the community. This is your opportunity to offer constructive comments, be heard and be proactive. Don’t miss this chance to act as a group and create Change!

Time Capsule
It was a year of many ups and downs. Thirty years ago, the country was numb as Three Mile Island experienced a major nuclear accident. The cost of goods in the USA took a jump as inflation rose. Muhammad Ali announced that he was retiring from boxing, well maybe. The Sony corporation introduced to the world it’s first Sony Walkman and the country mourned the terrible accident of Flight 191, which never made it off the runway in Chicago. There were no survivors. The movie box office racked up a big hit with Bob Fosse’s “All That Jazz”. Other big hits included the motion pictures “Alien”, “Rocky 2″, “The Jerk” and “Kramer Vs Kramer”. It was a tremendous year for dance as Merv Griffin launched the debut of his new syndicated television show, “Dance Fever”. It was so well received it continued on national TV for the next 9 years. The premier dance event of the year was held at the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden where Miquel and Annette Marrero took first place in the hustle division of the “Harvest Moonball”. Crowned the All Around champions were Dino Georgio & Jean Cammaletti. Billboard magazine posted their Disco Action 15 songs. The year was 1979 and in Los Angeles, California the top songs were:

Michael’s Cafe kicked off the free Wednesday hustle lessons back in April. It has been three months and its growing bigger and better. It couldn’t have been achieved without all the professionals that have volunteered their time. A true sign of commitment to helping us grow the Hustle. The finale of SYTYCD is this coming week, August 5th as the final four contestants battle it out for the Best Dancer award. Tune in to Fox network on Wednesday and Thursday night.

The dance world mourns the loss of one of it’s finest choreographers of the 20th century. Merce Cunningham, has passed away at the age of 90. A six-decade career made him one of the most exciting choreographers for audiences, filmmakers and directors. In 1990, he had been honored with the prestigious American National Medal of the Arts.

She is working harder then ever. Lori Brizzi is putting the final touches on an outdoor event, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 22nd. As many of you know, hustle has been eliminated from the Lincoln Center, Midsummer Night Swings rooster. Lori is striving to bring it back at a late summer event to combine dancing and to raise awareness for animal adoption. More details coming soon.

Hi Ron: I always welcome your newsletter with great joy!! And i have been a fan for years. I am reaching out to you for a suggestion, and your help is appreciated. I am a divorced Disco Diva – LOL- and do not have a steady dance partner (nor boyfriend). But I would love to attend some of these great events and have a great time, as I love to dance and do dance hustle pretty well. Can you suggest any way for a female dancer to meet a male dancer? Should i just go to an event and see what happens? I am quite shy, so that would be hard.

I’ve been enjoying your “favorite dance clubs of the past” and it sparked an idea. What about having people write in about their favorite socials now and why they like them. I know you wouldn’t want to write any negative feedback that might hurt a dance club, but the positive feedback might give people a reason to make the effort to try out a dance club. When I see a social on your website I usually ask another dancer if they’ve been there and what they thought of it. I like to know about the deejays music style, the size of the room, quality of the dance floor, age group and how welcoming the crowd is. It’s even helpful to know the parking situation.

* After returning from California to represent New York on the televised show “Dance Fever”, Ricky Quintana formed a new partnership with Lisa Nunziella. In 1981, among a field of top competitors, Ricky and Lisa took first place at the USBC’s in the Hustle theater Arts division.

* A dance legend Jacques d’Amboise as a young dancer excelled in ballet. A principal dancer for New York Ballet he broke out with breath taking performances in the motion pictures “Carousel” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”. His dance skills and lifts performed on Broadway and in films, still to this day are incredible.

* Arranger, performer Don Ray, AKA Raymond Donnez played keyboards on many of Cerrone’s records including “Love in C Minor” and Alec R. Constindinos records. He produced one solo album which included the hit “Got to Have Loving”. Don also produced Santa Esmeralda’s hit cover of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” .

* Choreographer/director Kenny Ortega worked with the best from Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Michael Jackson’s ” This Is It” Tour and the Jackson Memorial as well as with Lisa Nunziella & Eddie Vega. Ortega also directed all three of the franchise, “High School Musical” movies.

* Along with her dance partner and former husband, Melanie Lapatin and Tony Meridith have been busy choreographing on “So You Think You Can Dance”. A former World Latin Champion she was also a featured dancer in the motion pictures “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “Dance with Me”.

* In 1980 Kenny Gonzales and Ronnie Chase represented New York City on the syndicated television show “Dance Fever”. They advanced to the semi finals. Kenny continued to excel in hustle and theater arts partnering with Maria Torres and Nelly Cotto. He took first place at the very first Hustle USA Dance Championships along with the talented Lourdes Jones.

* Canadian producer Gino Soccio had a big hit with “Dancer” in 1979 and “Try It Out” . His music was influenced by touch dancers in the club scene. He created and produced the band “Witch Queen” that had the monster hit “Bang A Gong”

* Dance Champion Frank Regan captured all the gold in Canada and the US in the 70’s in ballroom dancing.
He was honored and recognized by the Legends Of Dance in 2001 and by the Heritage Classic for Outstanding Contribution to Dancesport in 2004.

* He made a name for himself on TV performing on “Dancing With The Stars” but Corky Ballas was already a ballroom house hold name as he and his wife Shirley dominated the Latin title from 1986 till 1990. A resident of Texas, his son Mark just won his second title on DWTS.

Letter from the Editor
Last week we celebrated my birthday at Michael’s Cafe. It was an extraordinary evening. Surrounded by friends, some that I’ve known for as long as 30 years. Many of these dancers I have admired for so many reasons but today, as we grow older and wiser, I admire them, above all, for their friendship. The magic of dancing brings folks together with a common interest: to have fun, engage and meet new friends. To be honored by celebrating my birthday with some of the most talented, gorgeous women around, well, it makes getting older not so bad.
Here is a wake up call for those that don’t attend socials or dance events, You don’t know what your missing. The relationships that are developed are priceless. This goes beyond the discipline of dance. These are life long friendships. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t relish being the center of attention but the fulfillment of being in the company of such incredible friends is more then I can put into words. If you’re not active in dance, get active, get involved, the results are immeasurable. Thank you to all those that came out to make my evening so special. I truly am blessed.

Back in the summer of 1983 I won a dance contest at the Coliseum to appear on Dance Fever. My partner Lori and I represented Albany, NY on the television show which was produced out of the Los Angeles studios. The prior year to our appearance, Mr Eddy Vega had won the grand championships on the show. While we were filming our segment I had the chance to meet the producers and Merv Griffin. Mr. Griffin was hanging out in the audience and couldn’t have been nicer. This was the experience of our lives. Even though a year had passed the name Vega kept coming up. He made such a great impression that the assistants at the studio kept talking about him. I wasn’t aware that he was deceased until we read it in your newsletter. He was an incredible dancer.

An impressive dancer in her own right, actress Katie Holmes (Mrs Cruise) will appear on SYTYCD on July 23rd celebrating the shows 100th episode. The show will be a tribute to Judy Garland and benefit Dizzy Feet Foundation which supports dance education in America.

Our favorite clubs from back in the day
Any avid dancer knows the emotional impact that a club can have on you. It can inspire you for years to come. The early discotheques and night clubs were the roots of the hustle. Before the Dance weekends and socials, the hustle was mainstream, in the clubs. During the early 70’s through the 80’s, the hustle could be seen in discotheques and night clubs through out the country. Great dancers would frequent the discos that catered to them for: new music, a great dance floor, fellow dancers, ambiance…. Here are some more letters that share those great club memories as we unlock the time capsule. Enjoy RB

Some of my favorite dance clubs from back in the day were, Fantasy Island which was located in Brooklyn New York and Uncle Sam’s in Long Island. Louie’s favorite was the Town house 48.

Walking into Inferno’s in 1979-1980 is an experience that most could handle and some would not come back. I could not get my friends from Bklyn to go, so I went alone or dragged my sister for company. I loved entering through those doors. The people were diversified from all races, creed and color. You had hustle dancers in one spot and freestyle dancers in another. But the spot I took was, of course, the hustle spot. The music pumped with bass and underground hustle music. On the floor I saw Arte, Eddie, Maria, Melvin, Louie, Sammy, Kitty, BooBoo, Butchie, Lourdes, Nellie, OMG the dancers were all there. It was a high to me and I did not take drugs. The addiction hit me as soon as I met all those dancers.

#1 the club I first met you in NJ, I was all of about 17 with my phony ID and you were what in Diapers??? Someplace Else, The Library, Valentino’s, Francine’s, Club Tomorrow – beautiful place, CC Charlie’s where I first met Bobby Peters, The Branch – The club downtown where I first met Mike Cobb. (I forgot the name of it)!!! Another club called Elans where I first met Stanley in 1985 for the dance fever tryouts downtown. Emerald City (Great place), Rumors (of course), the Chez in Atlantic City, OF COURSE! AND last but one of the very best, JOEY’S, in Clifton, NJ. I miss everyone up in Phillie!! Please say hello to everyone for me.

Where do I start there were so many great clubs but my favorite was Club Hollywood after it was Club Better Days, than the best club in the world was Paradise Garage. This was a club that you had all kinds of dancing, you were able to dance from 12 Midnight to 12 noon. There was Ice Palace that we would go about 6pm after the fountain that was in central park and we would dance outside on bricks every Sunday. We also had fun at Club Inferno and Club Disco Crisco. My favorite dance studio was Alexis Dance studio that was on 86th street and Broadway that was the start of Monday night dancing way before Dance sport.

I’ve been reading the letters everyone has been sending on the Dance Clubs that impacted their lives. Well ,The most extravagant & amazing Dance Club I’ve ever been to was the “LimeLight” in Atlanta Georgia. I was visiting a friend going to college there in 1980. It was like being in Las Vegas. I have never seen such a spectacle of dazzling decor, sound, music,dancing and staging. As you walk up the soring stair case they had people dressed in glamorous1920’s clothing frozen like manikins positioned on display ledges on the wall & staircase. As you entered the main room they had women in mermaid swimsuits encased in plastic bubbles filled with water moving across the ceiling on a cable system. I wondered …how are they breathing? They had a magician on stage doing magic acts, people in cages hanging from the ceiling dancing & hustling with each other. The lighting was a show onto itself. As the club got more crowded walls would open up to make the space larger until it was the size of a football field ( at least). I had the rare opportunity to see where all the magic happens. My friend knew the DJ and took me to the DJ booth and control room. I was blown away when I walked in. It was huge! half the room was lined with electronic panels that controlled all the special effects.It was like being in a space ship. The DJ had a tremendous capsule surrounded by his vinyl records & lighting. It took the DJ and three other guys to work the lighting effects alone. They had a lounge & kitchen up there much larger than my house. The view from the top of the ceiling height where the DJ stood was astounding. It was an amazing experience to witness. I’ll never forget.

My favorite disco dance clubs were Epanema, Alexis dance studio, Soap Factory, and of course Roseland, my favorite favorite club specially when they would circle around you to watch you dance and with different partners. I walk in one time and “Its Over” by Alma Faye was playing, I would wear wide skirts so my partners could spin me around. People would give you plenty of room. Also Barney Googles, Mariposa, Starship, Xenon, Ice Palace, and a small club called Hocus Pocus in Jersey City too.

There were soooo many clubs in those days and being a dance instructor and not having regular business hours, my colleagues and I were out EVERY night dancing and it was such a great time to be young. On Long Island, we loved getting dressed up and going to Decameron’s. It was a true supper club. My party at Il Campanello is the closest thing to that these days. There was Uncle Sam’s and the Feathers every week. Zachary’s, but I think it was called something else in those days. Also, a place called 231 but there were lots more. In Queens, I loved the Lemon Tree. In NYC, I went to Ipanema, of course, Studio 54 and the gay bar, Starship on 57th Street where I remember getting a kick out of sitting there next to Grace Jones watching the dancers. Then there were the big warehouse clubs for ‘after hour’ dancing. We were dancing fools and they were crazy times and I am thankful for making it through them alive and to have such wonderful memories to reminisce about.

The most memorable places to dance in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 70’s: Maxwells, B – Street, Silks, Tingles, Dance Your Ass Off, Studio West and Trocadero Transfer. The most memorable for me go to Maxwells for it’s lighted disco floor and Tingles for it’s elegance, where such notables as Jack LaLanne would frequent. All were hot with weekly dance competitions. These were the days when we would dance 7 nights a week, 4 to 6 hours per night. Where you would dance to 15 to 20 min. continues mix songs, of which you would sit 1 or 2 songs in the night. Where you were allowed to be creative; you where allowed to dress the part of a dancer; you were allowed to play a roll on the dance floor. It was customary to share and exchange ideas, to compete with different ideas rather than different styles of the same idea. It was a new dance and though you all had the same basic foundation, when you were creating from different locations and didn’t have the same access to ideas; when competitors hit the stage, there was more excitement and exchanges of ideas; and it generated more diversity and excitement with the dancers as they mixed there dancing ideas and skills on the dance floor.

Head judge from Dancing With The Stars, Len Goodman is prepared to get back to work with the British version “Strictly Come Dancing”. He has undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his prostate gland. Goodman says he feels good. He is expected to make a full recovery and is set to begin filming on the British series.

Pina Bausch passed away yesterday from cancer at the age of 68. Below is a video from Le Sacre du Printemps (Rite of Spring) from 2006.

Widely thought of as the Mother of German Modern Dance, she was considered the spiritual leader of the Tanztheather style of dance, but more importantly as a revolutionary and visionary who hybridized ideals of Balletic discipline with Modern movement.
