Head judge from Dancing With The Stars, Len Goodman is prepared to get back to work with the British version “Strictly Come Dancing”. He has undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his prostate gland. Goodman says he feels good. He is expected to make a full recovery and is set to begin filming on the British series.

This week in history Jacques Morali passed away. He was a French music producer that created the music for the Village People and the Ritchie Family. Bebu Silvetti also passed away in 2003. He was an Argentine pianist and composer, best remembered for the hit “Spring Rain”. We also lost Van McCoy this week in 1979 at the peak of his young career. He wrote the disco anthem “The Hustle”.

When Julianne Hough walks on the set of the upcoming remake of “Footloose”, she will already be very familiar with the role of her character, Arial Moore. Spotlight – part 2
Eddie Vega

A child prodigy, Eddie fascinated the country with his performances on Dance Fever. Over the next few years, he would continue to rotate partners: Lourdes Jones, Nelly Cotto and Maria Torres. Eddie was active on the competition circuit. He competed in dozens of contests against hundreds of couples. One of his biggest female rivals was also physically one of the smallest competitors. Lisa Nunziella performed and competed against Eddie for many years. Friends since the mid 70’s, Lisa was always impressed with his high energy and true love for dancing. It would take a decade for the two to finally combine their talents and work together. “Until the timing was right for us, then we partnered up, ” Lisa shares, ” We were quite excited to work together”. They began performing on stage at the “Cat Club” in New York City, on an on-going basis, when Lisa made a critical, life changing decision, to relocate to Los Angeles. During the summer of 1986, Lisa moved forward with her dreams and flew to LA, and about one month later, Eddie joined her. They auditioned for the nationally syndicated television show “Star Search”. The producers were amazed by them and asked the team to prepare immediately for filming for the September season premier. With shooting starting in just days they had to work fast. The new partnership was beyond words. It was pure magic on the dance floor. Instantaneous chemistry took place, coagulating the two premier dancers of the time. The first show for the new season of “Star Search” aired in 1987 with an overwhelming victory. They remained on the entire season winning 13 consecutive shows. Their success from this major accomplishment required them to quickly retain the best agents & professional representation. They began working with some top choreographers including Kenny Ortega. “We did a lot of work with Kenny, including the filming for singer/actress Cher and her videos, the “System of Survival” video by Earth Wind and Fire, Disney Specials and The Latin Quarter Show in Las Vegas, which actually belonged on Broadway”, explains Lisa. Together they were the featured dance team at the Latin Quarter show, performing a 4 minute eye popping mambo. The audience was moved by their dancing. They received glorious write ups and their photos covered the weekly trades in Vegas. The shows remained sold out night after night. After the closing of the Latin Quarter show, Eddie would return to New York. He wasn’t feeling the same and desired to be closer to home. Eddie had a keen outlook towards dance and business. He would use his winnings to become an investing business partner in a New York limousine company, implementing the importance and value of diversification.
Long time friend and competitor Arte Phillips reflected on many of Eddies achievements. His work has yet to be reproduced in full to this day, not unlike a Franky Manning in the Lindy world. Eddie did more in dance by the age of 17 than most professionals have achieved in their entire career. Along with Lourdes Jones, his first partner & childhood sweetheart, both under age with fake identifications, proceeded to win Dance Fever. A great inspiration to the television Hustle competition world. Due to his training in Ballet, Jazz, and his creativity in the Hustle, dancers are still attempting to recreate his brilliance. When he auditioned for Star Search he was accepted and then made history in that he won every show/competition the entire season along with Lisa Nunziella. Amazing!!! He danced with some of the best female partners of the Hustle world, the likes of the legendary Lourdes Jones, Nelly Cotto (the Queen of Hustle, a title given to her after her win with Floyd Chisolm on the Merv Griffin Show), Maria Torres one of the best of best of the Hustle world, and actually my humble self, winning many competitions every Monday at a club called the Ice Palace in NYC.

Eddie performed with Jennifer Lopez and Brenda K. Starr. I went to the Cat Club to see his show. He had so much more to do. He would have been on television like Maria Torres and Franc Reyes. He was such an inspiration to other dancers. Eddie was also so giving, he would welcome everyone. He was funny and never acted like a snob. Do you know that after he won a car on Dance Fever he gave me a ride, I was like Eddie it is fabulous car but it didn’t mean a lot to him, he wanted more in life. Eddie loved life and didn’t want anyone smoking and would argue the importance of good health and living. He knew that a cure would not be during his lifetime.

I remember first meeting Eddie Vega and Lourdes Jones, they were close friends with my new partner Nelly Cotto. Nelly would bring them along to my apartment for us to rehearse. Eddie would float around my living room with his own style and ease. At first Eddie would use many of our moves, lifts and routine, I was deeply flattered that he chose me. Eventually Eddie and Lourdes would come into their own and quickly become the force to be reckoned with. I will never forget watching him bring Dance Fever to a stand still. In one of their over head lifts he actually has Lourdes do an overhead cartwheel, land perfectly on her feet and as always they both fell right in step with each other. Eddie gave the hustle a whole new meaning with his quick feet and multimillion turns. If I was fast, he was lightening. The last time I competed was at the Harvest Moonball, that was the year that Eddie teamed with my ex partner Nelly and I teamed with his ex partner Lourdes. Lourdes and I came out ready with an entirely new routine and new lifts. Eddie and Nelly came fully ready to claim the evening for themselves and they by far deserved it. I had never seen Nelly so at ease and that’s because Eddie made her comfortable and put her in that state. He had a knack for making everything flow so easily. God Bless you Eddie, I will always hold a special place in my heart for you, knowing you have made such a difference in so many peoples lives. You’ll always be missed.

Eddie was talented in many ways. He use to make our costumes when we first started dancing in our teens. We would buy material and in two point two seconds our skirts were made. He use to fix our hair and put make-up on us…..Stilettos were mandatory, Ahh the memories. About Eddie dancing with sneakers, well that’s a fact, many of the dance floors were very fast and just to slippery to dance with capezio’s and that’s where the sneakers came into play, and how Ironic, years later they have capezio sneakers. It’s no wonder why Eddie Vega is so Fabulous, “A League of His Own” Simple the Best!!! He should have patented his sneakers . Eddie Vega you are truly missed, you are forever in my heart and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Your Pictures hang on my wall Forever and Ever till this Day!!!

Eddie’s dancing was a window to an intelligent, loving and creative mind. His leaps, kicks and spins were the voice of a true artist. His talent shined in every performance. Observers were never let down as they achieved the satisfaction of a great experience…..brilliance. His work transcended to a higher level. Eddie has left an erasable mark on the dance world. Today, we have incorporated in to our general dance and routines his signature movements, proving that they have stood the test of time. During my time speaking with Eddie’s family and close friends, many wonderful stories were shared as well as the common theme – “Eddie was a terrific human being, he would take the shirt off his own back to give it to someone in need, without thinking about it”. That was his nature. His life work reflects all the wonderful characteristics of a world class leader regardless of their occupation. Eddie Vega was voted into the “Hustle Hall Of Fame’s” – Life Time Achievement division in 2005. That was the first year for this recognition. He was one of only 5 recipients, that year, classified as the elite dancers of the generation. In 2006 DanceTalk held its first Readers Choice award for “All Time Favorite Dancer”. Readers casted their votes and Eddie won hands down. I look to Eddie as the Bruce Lee, Pele or Michael Jordan of the hustle. He wasn’t just good, he was superior. I don’t know why he had to leave us so early but I do know that the impact he made will live on through our dance. Eddie lifted us to a higher place and for that he will always be remembered.
We need more Eddie Vega’s.

Disco America highlights
The reviews are in. It was an incredible weekend at Disco America. Many thanks to Donna Boyle and Joyce Szili for making this happen. Eleven years of bringing dancers together to celebrate the dance and music we all love. Disco America is the longest running event dedicated to the hustle and it was non stop action with workshops, dance competitions, exhibitions, pro-am scholarship sponsors, vendors and social dancing till the wee hours. The organizers delivered a fun filled weekend. Over the weekend, the Life Time Achievement award was renamed in honor of a long time friend of Disco America. The first timer recipient of the “Arte Phillips Life Time Achievement Award” was bestowed upon Elizabeth Darchi. A dinner show tribute to the late Arte Phillips featured many of his choreographed numbers and also featured solo routines by Billy Fajardo & Katie Marlow and Kelvin Roche & LoriAnn Greenhouse. Jay Neal moved the audience with an incredible video compilation of Arte’s career. Arte’s father and sister attended and shared their appreciation with the audience and staff. When Eddie Vega was just starting out in the mid late 70’s, he & Lourdes practiced with my dance partner and me in the same studio on 5th Avenue in NYC. It was Eddie who helped me learn many lifts and tricks. He was indeed an extraordinary person. It was about 15 years later after he was well known, I had run into him at Zacharys. I approached him to say hello, not thinking he would even remember me. Not only did he remember my face, he remembered my name & the fun we had in the studio on 5th avenue so many years ago. It was then that he told me that he was sick and was going to die. It was a sad moment to know that such a talent would not be with us for much longer. He will always be special to me in my world of dance.

Dear Ron,
When I read the spot light on Eddie I nearly broke down in tears. You brought back so many cherished memories. I sat by my tv watching his performances, everyone, on Dance fever, PBS and Star Search. I taped them all and continue to watch them to this day. He was a magnificent person. He always was kind and smiled all the time. Sadly, many years have passed on and it made me think back and wondered about those years and the many talented dancers that we have lost.

The place New York, the time 70’s. It all started when I answered an ad for Dance Instructors. It was at the Murray Kossover School Of Dance on 29th & b’way (Hotel Breslin). I auditioned with my version of the Mambo, Cha Cha and of course the Hustle my favorite! I got the job! I started hanging out at the Alexis dance studio, and many other clubs but one of my favorites was Roseland & Epanema. In Epanema they played alot of the The Salsoul Orchestra music. I would have goose bumps. I had a few dance partners. At Murrays Kossovers we had dancers come in to do dance showcase…One time Ron Bess came in with his partner Lisa and danced to “Born to be Alive” It was hot! Teaching there I met some of the hottest dancers like Eddie Vega, Billy Fajardo, Maria Torres, Sandra Rivera, Ralph Lew, Arte Phillips, Hector Berrios, Lisa Nunziella and all the dancers of Disco Dance Dimensions. I entered many dance contest and won 1st place in a a small club in Brooklyn and Jersey City with my partner Ray to the song “Underwater” by Harry Thuman. There was another club called Romero & Juliet in Queens I danced with my other partner George did not win but one couple cracked the disco floor. It was lit with many lights. Every Sunday I would hang out at Central Park and hustle hustle hustle. Several times I hung out with Eddie Vega and other dancers, we took the subway train to clubs and dance studios. Eddie would stand in the middle of floor, hold on to the train pole and split while he was standing straight up. He gave me confidence to shine on the floor.

As far as I’m concerned, The Ipanema on 52nd Street in New York City was the ultimate club back in the 70’s. This place was in a class all it’s own. A fiberglass dance floor was the main feature, as it was an elevated floor with multicolor lights underneath (very reminiscent of the dance floor used in Saturday Night Fever). The club also had upstairs lounge from where you could watch from up above all that was going on down below. The music was always great, and many of the legendary hustle dancers would show up every Tuesday night to dance and draw the largest crowds to their circle to watch them show off their talent.

Back in the day before Hustle in New Jersey you had great places you could go for entertainment at a minimum age of 18. The first time I was exposed to a Disc Jockey playing records instead of hearing a band play in a club was The Wild Child Club in Jersey City, NJ. There you heard songs from James Brown, Eddie Kendricks, Barabas, Executive Suite and Delfonics and others. Soul Free Style Dancing was the popular dance of choice. Another place in 1973 was Mother’s Disco in Wayne NJ. Song like Rock the Boat and Rock Your Baby were hits in the early 70’s and the popular dance was The Bump. In looking for new and exciting places to go my friends and I tried to ventured out and we found ourselves in Long Island to experience something different, the club was Speak Easy in Island Park in 1974. The ride to Speak Easy was about just over an hour to get to but well worth the trip. It was a time I’ll never forget and doubt if it will ever be repeated. The age group were in the late teens and early twenties very sophisticated, kind, mannerly, respectful, thoughtful and happy. Never was there a situation were the people didn’t get alone. I saw entertainers such as the Stylistics, Blue Magic, The Trammps, Gloria Gaynor, Carol Douglas, Ecstacy, Passion and Pain and many others. I was exposed to a Disc Jockey that beat mixed and blended the music so well that he kept the dance floor jam packed all night long. There is were I became interested in being a Disco Disc Jockey and started working toward that goal. I learned the rope hustle and a year later learned the earlier version of what the Hustle is today. We tried many of the Long Island Clubs back in the 70’s and enjoyed all of them because they were done the right way. They were big, stylish, great sound, big dance floors, great lighting effects, great music and friendly people. A combination that has not been seen since the early 80’s. It was a short but wonderful era but you would only know that if you were there to live it!

Back in the day the Ice Palace and the Cat Club were two of my favorite spots. The Ice Palace on Sunday opened at 4pm for the Tea Party. A lot of great dancers showed up there to do some serious dancing! It was a blast!! The Cat club was a very unique situation. It gave us an opportunity to perform on stage weekly to a packed house. I loved every minute of it!

Mc Arthur’s Park located in Long Island. I liked this club because the music DJ Willy C played, all the beautiful hustle music and best mixes at the time. The best part of going out in the 80’s was going out with my brothers Mike, Eddie, and DJ Willy, we all used to hang out late and stayed there till the last song…One of my best dancing careers, was dancing with my niece who was 4 years old at the time and performed at 2001 Club with her.

For me the place that you were sure to find me was the BROTHERS 3 in Perth Amboy right off of RT 35. I was there each and every Tuersday night. I was still in High School at the time. Everyone went to BROTHERS 3 back in the day. You had great dancers and the music was Slamming. The Ladies were Slamming they were dressing very Sexy and dancing in high heels, you don’t see that to offen.There were a lot of great places to go back then like the Foxy Lady, Cameo, Soap Factory, Creations in west Orange on Sunday. It was tough but it’s gotta be ” Someplace Else ” in Cherry Hill on Cuthbert Blvd, also known as the ” Home of the Trammps ” with Carmen Notaro on the turntables. He was one of the DJ’s who inspired me to become one. The outside of the building was a castle so it was called the ” Castle on Cuthbert in commercials. Check out the ” Disco Inferno video on VH1.com which was filmed there. Also ” Valentinos ” in Cherry Hill .

Joey’s in Clifton, N.J., will always be my favorite club. It’s where I was introduced to the Hustle….well over 20 years ago!! It’s funny, I was the baby in the crowd back then! Hanging out with Smitty, and all the other great Hustle dancers there, made the foundation for the dancer I am today. There are so many other clubs that I could mention in NJ and NY….but Joey’s was the ultimate for me. Summers were a blast! On a Sunday, I would go to Joey’s Surf Club in Ortley Beach, NJ. First to hang on the beach, and then I would go inside at 3pm to start dancing. Around 6pm I would leave and rush to Joey’s in Clifton to continue dancing by 8pm. It was so much fun! What makes me really happy is that I still see everyone I danced with from way back then……and I’m definitely not the baby anymore!!!

Being born in NYC (Manhattan) I had an incredible selection of clubs to go to not only known in the tri state area but the whole world. I used to dance at New York New York, Bonds, Xenon, Studio 54, Crisco Disco, Ipanema, Roseland, Better Days, The Grand Ballroom, Alexis (Studio), Ice Palace, La Bamba, Copa, Red Parrot and my favorite “The Starship”. Let me tell you…I will never ever forget that Saturday night. I got all dressed up in my designer jeans (Fiorucci for me) and headed out to The Starship for the very first time. I remember going in and walking a long hallway and hearing the thumping music. It was beautiful. I walked into the main dance floor and I will never forget what they were playing European Connection “Come Into My Heart”. The sound system is the best I have ever heard then and till this day. I just stood there in awe and watched all the hustle dancing that was going on. I will never forget that moment. I was in heaven!!!

There are so many great clubs but one of my all time favorites was the “Boomba”, across the street from Roseland and Ipanema at 56th and Broadway. That is where I met my first partner Pat. The club had the best dancers like Billy and Sandra. Other favorites included Barney Googles, Mariposa where I met Nelly Cotto, Roseland, Abby, Red & White, Footsteps and 310.

Of course one of my favorites was Valentino’s. In the back of the club, were the best dancers kicking it out. My all time favorite club was Emerald City in Cherry Hill NJ, it was like a disco world, you could get lost inside it was so big. Dancers from DC, NY and further would come to the club it was so huge. My other favoirete was the Chez Paree in Atlantic City, on the boardwalk…it was an after hours club but every night was great. DJ Charlie Buck Eye was the premier DJ in the area. Dancers from all over came down because of the casinos and dancing.

Introducing Bianca Disimino & Frank Paredes

Check out these new young dancers, they are beautiful, enthusiastic and most importantly passionate about Hustle. In the first video they are doing a hybrid blend of Hustle & Cha Cha to a House music mix. Read more about them below; and without further ado…Introducing Bianca Disimino & Frank Paredes.

Bianca is Virgo (like me!) and will be 16 years old this fall, and Frank is Gemini (they get along great with Virgos) and just turned 22. I have seen them compete and social dance and I give them a lot of credit for being composed (they held it down in finals at Madjam & placed 5th for Intermediate Strictly Hustle Category!) and having such a great understanding for the feeling of dance, given the short time they have been dancing it.

Bianca always danced as long as she can remember; her Mom started her at tap at age 3, then she went on to jazz and hip hop. It was her Mother again who introduced her by proxy to Hustle because she was taking Salsa-robics at Roberto Pagan’s studio and got Bianca into it. Bianca started getting interested in Salsa and Roberto took notice and began working with her. He then got her interested in the Junior Ballroom scene and she started doing privates in Ballroom. Before she knew it she was even teaching young kids and recruiting young people onto the dancefloor. She’s already been to 13 comps including Madjam 2009, and she’s loving Hustle. Madjam 2009 was her second Madjam, in 2008 she did 2 dance showcases.

Frank only started dancing a year and a half ago. Before Frank got interested in dancing, his sister Rosa Paredes, Roberto Pagan’s partner would suggest Frank check out dancing, and so would his family. She kept trying and finally convinced him, he decided he would try. Roberto put Frank into an Intermediate class his very first time around and Frank just tried his best to keep up and every since then just kept right on going. He enjoys Salsa, however Roberto showed him Hustle, he tried it and liked it for it’s speed and it’s versatility with music. Then Roberto and Jaimie Serna took over mentoring him and ever since he’s been totally hooked. Jaimie has been really making an extra effort, working with him on his frame, his timing.

Asia – Bianca, what made you like Hustle?

Bianca – Oh I just love it, I took to it right away. It’s a fast dance, you can dance to almost all modern music, the newest music. When Roberto started teaching it to me, I really embraced it. It quickly became my favorite dance. I just love it, I really love it, I think it’s gonna be THE new thing. My friends have seen me dance it and they love it, they wanna do it.

The only thing I don’t like is the old music, dancing to the old music; we had this one Hustle social Frank and I went to, we were so bored, the music was boring, it was slow and even though we were so excited to dance, we only danced a few songs to the newest music they played. We were really bummed, cuz we really love to Hustle.

Asia – What about you Frank, what made you like Hustle?

Frank – with Hustle, funny thing is I didn’t even know what it was til a little over a year ago, and now it’s become a part of me. I find myself when I hear a good song I like, I try to find the ‘and1′, even when I’m driving, stuck in traffic whatever, I’ll hear my song and I’m doing the steps, my ‘and1′ on the pedals, it’s crazy…it’s changed my life. I just love dancing Hustle, I love watching the Pros and the good dancers. I danced with as many experience Hustle dancers as I can, at Madjam my favorite dancer and my dance highlight was dancing with Stephanie Risser. I love watching her and her partner (Joe Kerner) compete too, they were so great. Hustle has made me grow so much as a person and a dancer. I danced with Louis Orlando and he taught me some good stuff too, he told me if I can learn to be a good follow I’ll be a better lead, and I definitely understand now. Also dancing with Jean Merisier was great, he showed me alot too, it was so great to dance with all the good dancers and so many of them spent the time to teach me and show me stuff.

Asia – What do you guys want to achieve or accomplish with Hustle?

Bianca – I definitely want to absorb more and learn alot more. I want to have a better connection and learn as much as I can about the dance. It makes me feel so good about how different I am, it’s made me grow so much. Dancing Hustle changes Life, it’s changed mine and it just gives me a different perspective.

Frank – I want to learn to control my excitement on the dance floor, I just like it so much, I get on the floor and I wanna take off, but I know I gotta learn control. But I definitely I want to continue doing it, it’s in me now, Hustle. I also want to show thru my dancing that Hustle can be danced to new music. I love dancing it to newer, like our music, modern music. I like a few of the old songs but you can dance Hustle to so many different kinds of music, that’s what I like. I wanna learn to lead better and follow better too cause of what Jean and Louis were telling me and teaching me. I feel my dancing getting stronger and better, I really wanna keep going, Hustle is in me now, it’s a part of me.

Asia – Well, I really hope we see alot more of you both in the future, it’s been so much fun getting to know you both, I really enjoy your good vibes and energy and for sure, you’ll be back on The Hustle Lounge, hopefully we’ll feature you guys as regulars! Thanks so much!

World class dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov continues to wow audiences. Along with Ana Laguan he is currently performing at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam.

The number one rated summer talent show returns on June 23rd, Tuesday night on ABC television. Get ready for “America’s Got Talent”. The best in all forms of entertainment including dance.

They danced together and created magic. Both Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse passed away this week in the month of June. Fred has been gone for 22 years and Cyd passed away just last year. If you want to be dazzled, rent “The Band Wagon” as they explode together, performing to “Dancing In The Dark”.

Spotlight – Eddie Vega (part 1 of 2)
The Empire State building reaches above the clouds, a height at one time never imagined. New York, the most popular city in the world: Radio City Music Hall, Wall Street, Broadway and the birth place of the hustle. No man waved the hustle flag higher and with more pride then Eddie Vega. He was unique. Whether he danced, competed or performed, he was unstoppable. His quickness, flexibility and strength were unmatched. He partnered with some of the finest diva’s of the hustle generation – Lourdes Jones, Nelly Cotto, Maria Torres and Lisa Nuziella. But to be frank, he danced with everyone: young, old, beginner, professional, black, white or candy stripped. Eddie was hospitable to everyone, he didn’t have a mean bone in his masculine body. Eddie Vega became the most recognizable name in our dance. He became a New York landmark. Born on May 25th, 1965 at Lincoln Hospital, located in the Bronx, Eddie was the youngest son in the Vega family. He had four older brothers and two sisters. His parents enjoyed the art of dancing but it was primarily for casual fun. They would touch dance and take part dancing at occasional family get togethers and parties. Eddie took note. When he was just 7 years old, his family made plans to move to California. The Vega’s had family there and decided to settle down on the west coast. Eddie loved to swim. California was perfect for him, “where ever there was a pool, Eddie was in it, and boy could he swim,” recalls his oldest sister Smiley (aka Maria). His pool hopping days were short lived. Just a year after the family migrated to the golden state, his family reluctantly made the move back to the New York. His Uncle was killed in a tragic car accident. Young Eddie would readjust to the east coast and hang up his swim trunks but would now lace up his roller skates. He was great. At only 8 years old he was the best skater around. He simply excelled at everything he loved. Directly adjacent to where the Vega family lived in the Bronx, was a community center called the Casimaria. The center hosted nightly dances. People would dance on the roof of the Casimaria during the spring and summer months. Eddie, as a young boy, could gaze out his bedroom window and view couples spinning and dancing all night a top of the building. He was mesmerized by the dancing and would view them for hours at a time. Eddie had never taken formal dance lessons as a child, “he was born to dance”, explains Smiley. Where ever Smiley would go to dance, Eddie would follow her. Although there was a five year age gap, he adored his older sister and became her moving shadow. Eddie was only 10 years old at the time but he would some how figure out how to get into the adult night clubs including the popular “Playpen”. He would sneak into some of the most exciting discotheques for dancing purposes. He loved the “Limelight”, “Club 310″, and many of the Latin clubs. One of the hottest places to dance at the time was St. Mary Park Recreational center in the Bronx. Eddie could be seen there dancing at times with as many as 3 girls. “Even back then he was an incredible hustle dancer,” shares Luis Rivera, a fellow member of the Disco Dance Dimensions. “Eddie must have been no more than 11 years old.” While attending a dance, Eddie met his first partner, Lourdes Jones. At the time, Lourdes didn’t know how to do the hustle. “Eddie liked it that way,” explains Smiley, “he had a premise, that if you didn’t know, he could teach you his way and not have to retrain them.” He didn’t’ want a dance partner with bad habits. Eddie preferred to train his partners early on. At the age of only 10 years old, he was already coaching his dance partner and developing his only dance patterns and style. At such an early age he had found his calling in life. As he became a little older, he became even more serious about his dancing. He took a couple of classes here and there, but for all intensive purposes, he would create his own dance art. With insurmountable talent, by the age of 15, everyone in the Bronx dance scene knew of Eddie Vega. In 1980 one of the most popular clubs was the “Atmosphere”. They hosted a major “discotheque” dance contest which Eddie & Lourdes would excitedly compete in. This was the beginning of a run of numerous contests which the young couple would take on. Eddie would either win or place in every contest from that day on. They were awarded first place at the Atmosphere contest and were quickly recruited to become one of the featured dancers in the Latin Symbolics. The Symbolics were one of the most prestigious Latin dance troops of the day. He would befriend many other dancers while in the dance company. When Eddie was 16, his family moved to Kingsbridge. For Eddie, school and games were all put on hold. He was driven to dance and perform. His focus was exclusively on dancing. Along with Lourdes, their next step was becoming members of the legendary dance troop, the Disco Dance Dimensions. This would include traveling all over the world to perform and dance on television. This is where Eddie felt at home. Although there was a minimum age requirement to appear on the syndicated TV show “Dance Fever”, this did not discourage Eddie. He got on. After winning the preliminary round at Regines in NYC, it was off to Hollywood with Lourdes to represent New York on TV. They would not only dazzle the audience but would go on to win the quarter finals, semi finals and the Grand Championships on Dance Fever during the 1982 season. He always brought his A game and simply made everyone else look flat footed. Dancing was riding a major upward wave and the viewership for Dance Fever made it the number one show, according to the Nielson ratings. It was the Holy Grail of dance shows. “Eddie Vega, to me he was the most incredible, influential, and sharing dancers in the Hustle world that I have ever met”, shares the late Arte Phillips. “Talent wise” he was the Baryshnikov of the Hustle. I truly had great respect for him”. Eddie would then display a rare skill as he would change dance partners. This would begin a non stop rotations as he would compete with different female partners and continue to win. The transition from partners was seamless and without flaw. In 1983 he would compete at the United States Ballroom Championships and win with Nelly Cotto. He would return the following year, this time back with Lourdes Jones, and once again bring home the gold. Broadway super star Juliet Prowse called him “amazing”. Eddie took every aspect of his dancing to the highest level. He wanted to deliver nothing less then perfection from his music selection, choreography, death defying lifts/ tricks to his bejeweled costumes that in many cases he himself hand made.
“He and I were roommates where he impressed me in many ways”, explains close friend Arte Philips. “For instance, one day while we were riding the subway he grabbed the straps that you hold on to in order to steady yourself on a moving train and he flipped himself upside down. He the did an upside down split on the ceiling, with no effort.

I want to thank all those who helped make my recent birthday celebration and dance at Michael’s one of my most memorable. Special thanks to my dear friend Loren for the cake and balloons and for waitress Jen for setting my table. As usual, DJ Mark set the tone with his masterful combination of my personal favorites. All the great ladies who lined up for my first birthday dance added to the memories I will take away. My dance teacher Ginny from Top Hat needs to be acknowledged for her encouragement and patience over the past 18 months.

I commend all the teachers that are volunteering to teach at Michaels cafe in Philadelphia. Hybridization of Hustle – Part I

In response to Ron Bess‘ post from Dance Talk yesterday regarding the Growth of Hustle; this post is my exercise to illustrate how wide and far concepts can go in Hustle. I feel the existing iconography of Hustle is not inspiring NEW interest, know-what-I-mean? Some Mash-ups:

This first video is by Raize the Roof, a High School collective presenting Dance, Music, Fashion & Art. How is prescient is that for a group of teens from Auckland, New Zealand? I am so inspired by their initiative I’m editing the new ‘Hybridization’ Category here on THL to Hybridization & Mash-ups. I admire the CONCEPT greatly, especially seeing it was from 2007.

Notice a similarity in one of their costumes with the below from Stephen Petronio Dance Company? We’ll be featuring Stephen Petronio in an upcoming post (I’m a HUGE fan).

This next video is a look at Tecktonik fashion stills edited into a video. Originating in Paris, Tecktonik is interesting because it mostly celebrates the male ‘Peacock’ effect, has come to include the Gay culture and leans to a harder, edgier feel and attitude. Tecktonik is huge in Europe as a matter of fact, it’s mainstream :

Tecktonik is it’s uniquely own brand of Mash-up I started seeing in Paris around 2006; here is the block quote excerpt taken from Wikipedia:

Tecktonik also known as Electro Dance, Milky Way or Vertigo, is a style of street dance danced to electro music based on a blend of techno styles (late 80s vogue, 90s waving and old school breakdancing), and 70s disco, started in the early 2000s in Paris, France, at the club Metropolis. It has grown in popularity through word-of-mouth and video sharing sites such as Dailymotion and YouTube. Dancers also tend to have “futuristic”, sometimes even gothic hair cuts. The neon colours on shirts are linked to the London Nu Rave fashion scene.

What does all this have to do with Hustle? The same images/poses and photo styles, the Ballroom-esque silhouettes and outfits, the repeated choreography, it’s just NOT enough to push the envelope.

How will the new generation participate? I am dying to know, talk to me…

Editorial – The Growth of The Hustle
When we describe the current state of affairs, when it comes to the growth of the hustle, we tend to avoid words that are not encouraging: “crisis”, “aging”, “downward spiral”, “questionable future”. But, there is a time for euphemisms and a time for direct Talk. Today is a good time to start thinking about taking forward steps. It feels right. Whether we think – retooling, retrenchment, reinventing, exposing the hustle to the next generation… we must take action. How do we make things better?

It is our role, the first generation of dancers, to preserve the hustle for the next generation. We all have a personal responsibility to give back, as much of the joy and pleasure that the hustle brought to us.
Whether we are prepared or not, the future is coming. Will the hustle be a part of it?

As journalists, it is our obligation to expose and share with readers all the dance news. It will require the teachers, studios and organizers to passionately embrace these ideas, taking the reigns to drive the hustle in the right direction. We are committed to keeping our readers informed. We have been sharing letters on the advancement of the hustle on The Hustle Lounge. Dozens of insightful ideas have been shared. (You can view them at http://thehustlelounge.com/point-of-view-ron-bess-dance-talk/comment-page-2/#comment-1320 ) But newsletters are simply that, they present you with information. It is incumbent upon the professionals and amateurs alike, to implement ideas to strengthen the hustle and accelerate its growth by inviting new faces to learn. Our dance needs exposure. We hope that the creative ideas discussed are not forgotten. It will take everyone to help make a difference. If you truly love the hustle then we must make a concerted effort to spread this dance. It feels right.

A Must Read from “Edie, the Salsa Freak”
Attention Performers, Competitors, Significant Others, Partners, Dating, Marriages…
This simple tip from Edie will save your Partnership and a life of absolute misery. Ok. You just got done performing, competing, dancing a single social song… or whatever. One of you, your partner, or something went wrong. “Someone” messed up a tad – on accident. Your dance or performance wasn’t perfect. You bow, bid your farewell to the audience, get backstage, and glare at your partner straight in their eyes.

Ladies and gentlemen, coming from literally YEARS of performing,experience, I want you to heed my advice, and listen loud and very clear…

There are FOUR words you never EVER want to come from your mouth.
These four words will devastate, destroy, cripple, and possibly END your relationship.
These four words could closely resemble a four-letter word if put in the wrong combination, or are said once too many times, or even said or uttered softly only a SINGLE time.

These words were designed to destroy. They were designed to devastate. They were designed to kill the joy you once shared together.

These four words should be completely ELIMINATED from your vocabulary altogether – especially the moments, hours, days, and weeks after you perform

Those four words are…
“You…”
“Should have…”
“Could have…”
“Would have…”
The first is the most important. “You”.
Placing blame on your partner is the worst thing you can do. When you point your finger at someone with accusation with your hands, and/or your words, remember there are three of your own fingers pointing back at you.
Gently and kindly replace the word “You” with “We”, or better yet, “I”. Blame yourself for everything, especially if things went wrong. Your partner will let down their guard, melt, and get all soft, warm, and fuzzy inside. They may even realize that it truly was “their fault”, and apologize, and start blaming themselves. Both of you will feel better that there are no harsh feelings, and you can do better “next time”… which brings me to the remaining three words. And THEN… after you’ve eliminated the word “YOU”… Gently and kindly replace
“Should have…”
“Could have…”
“Would have…”
… with the words “Next time…” If you stop placing “regret” words in your vocabulary with hopeful words like “Next time”, your partnership will be light-hearted, fun, hopefully, fun, uand last forever.
I can’t tell you enough how much simple words can destroy. Be very aware of whatever comes from your lips. The tongue can be more powerful than any two-edged sword

Yes, it’s a provocative title for a post, and I only really did it to create dialogue; even with the instigators and purists.

What I really meant to title this as is – Hustle is Evolving, the Hybridization of Hustle…

Hybridization is paramount to Success in today’s world of technology, personalization and global-village accessibility.

Everything is relative in some way, whether it’s social marketing, design, art, product development, fashion – whatever; it’s about hybridizing – in other words, Everything is everything.

I’ve talked about mash-ups before…in a visual way, here; but now it’s time to drill down and get to the meat of it.

I know lots of people don’t like Hustle being influenced by outside factors, but as Lisa Nunziella-Hockley was saying the other day, ‘Hustle borrows so much from other dances’!

I’ll be profiling some dancers and choreographaers who have helped to shape shift the Dance arena shortly…stay with me…
