“Apple pie of my eye” is an idiom, right?

Something about loving or cherishing someone or something as much as an apple pie? Wait? Is that correct? Am I confusing it with “pie in the sky”? Or am I thinking of “apple pie of my eye in the sky that’s amore”?

None of those are correct, are they.

What also isn’t right is the apple pie topping on McDonald’s new Caramel Apple Pie Frappé, which I’ll get to in a moment.

The dessert beverage features a Frappé base with caramel apple pie syrup mixed in, topped with salted caramel whipped cream and an apple pie topping. Calling it “apple pie topping” is a bit misleading. My initial thought was that it would be a combination of apple pie crust bits and maybe some apple-flavored crunchy cookie pieces. Instead, it turned out to be a combination of salted caramel pretzel bits, salted caramel seasoning, cinnamon streusel topping, and graham crumbs.

I didn’t know about the pretzel bits going in, so I was surprised by their texture as I came across them. Definitely not pie crust, and they looked more like peanuts. The topping had crunch, but the textures oddly varied. Some pieces felt like fruit seed shards, while others had a more robust crunch like a pretzel nugget. Nothing about them read as pie crust though.

I understand the logic behind using pretzel bits, since they can withstand the icy, wet environment of the drink better than any cookie or pie crust could. But many of the bits were too large to get through the straw, clogging my cylindrical sucking device. By the time I reached the bottom of the cup, there was a collection of unsuckable bits left behind.

Beyond the crunchy topping pieces, though, the drink itself was pretty good, and I think it could be enjoyed just as well without those hard pieces. Like all McDonald’s Frappés, the base had a pleasant blended, icy texture. The apple pie syrup hits hard with a bit of caramel sweetness, and the cinnamon mixed in from the topping makes it even better. A few sips in, though, I noticed some bitter notes. There’s no coffee in the drink, so it might’ve come from the caramel apple pie syrup itself, or maybe those pretzels bits.

McDonald’s Caramel Apple Pie Frappé was good enough that I’ll probably try the iced coffee or latte versions later. However, I’ll be pulling out the pretzel pieces.

This was the second Snackish Potato Crisps flavor I’ve had. I initially tried the Salt Kissed flavor, which was decent. But as a salt & vinegar potato chip fan, I couldn’t help but try this version from Snackish.

They are heavily seasoned with vinegar powder. Just thinking about them makes my mouth water a bit. But I fully enjoyed that heavy dose of vinegar, and because of that, these were a little hard to put down.

If you’re not familiar with Snackish Potato Crisps, they’re made with a combination of potatoes and other ingredients, like rice protein and cassava fiber. Using those other ingredients allows a serving to have 8 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber.

However, because they’re not just potatoes, they don’t have the crispiness of potato chips. They feel more like a very thin cracker, and their texture is closer to Baked Lays than regular potato chips. I think the mouthfeel might turn some people off.

I find them to be a tasty way to get 8 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber, and I don’t mind their texture. However, the packaging is a bit misleading. The images on the front of the bag show standard-looking potato chips, but the crisps look nothing like that.

Cheez-Its are arguably the greatest cheesy snack cracker of all time. I know they are for me. Sure, I would prefer a corn chip or a potato chip on most days, but in the realm of cheesy crackers there is undoubtedly a hierarchy, and the Cheez sits proudly at the top, with a couple of cute fish swimming right underneath.

But what about dips? That is a steeper, more controversial hill to climb. I love a good French onion, ranch, nacho cheese, salsa con queso, horseradish, creamy honey mustard — you name it, I’ll dip it. Yet beer cheese has never been a top tier crave-able entity in my personal power rankings of dunkable decadence. So when Cheez-It announced a comically patriotic collaboration with Coors Light to bring the flavor of beer cheese to its Cheez-y crackers, I knew it was something I wanted to find and be convinced of its existence.

I won’t lie, I mostly wanted to try this out of morbid curiosity. I secretly had hoped to write a laughable, scathing review about how the best cracker became a gross novelty for Instagram likes. But ya know what? They’re pretty good!

The very first bite of these generously seasoned crackers, like many of the outside-the-box flavors, is a bit intense. But after three or four crackers, the intensity fades into something quite palatable. On the initial chew and sniff test, there is a sweet, yeasty, beer-adjacent flavor that’s just a smidge bizarre, but it evolves into a dense, spicy, cheesy taste that complements the base cracker well. It has a sharper, spicier tingle than I anticipated, with a dominant peppery garlic note that stands out quite proudly against the yeasty cheese undertones.

These crackers will make Clark County, Kentucky, the official birthplace of beer cheese, quite proud. What originated as a free bar snack to keep customers thirsty will undoubtedly still achieve that mission with this boxed, commercialized version of the flavor profile. But Cheez-It is another one of those products that suffers from what I call the “Reese’s Conundrum.” The original flavor is so good that the modified versions rarely surpass the high bar from the get-go. While I recommend that any Cheez-It or Coors Light enthusiast give these a shot, they won’t be taking the spot of my personal favorite Extra Toasty anytime soon.

Seeing the new Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer at McDonald’s feels like a real paradigm shift in the fast food industry. It’s long-overdue recognition of the energy drink market, itself a multi-billion-dollar sector so firmly entrenched in the American way of life you kinda wonder how something like this wasn’t already a McDonald’s menu staple ten years ago.

You’ve got coffee, you’ve got soda, and in between you’ve got Red Bull. One cup of this beverage packs about 80 milligrams of caffeine, which is about the same amount you’d get out of a tall caffe latte at Starbucks. The energizer is tailor-made for overworked WordPress engineers, high school Fortnite enthusiasts, and grad students cramming for a quiz on Giovanni Sartori’s “ladder of abstraction” models. It’s not made for leisurely sipping; it’s meant for locking in.

The energizer (which comes in a standard and sugar-free Red Bull Zero version) is definitely an aesthetically pleasing fast food item. That delightful, delirious blend of rich greens and dark purples gives it an awesome ‘90s throwback vibe — I mean, it’s basically the same color pattern used by the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets. Teal, violet, and topped with abstruse purple fruit — Prince would’ve loved this thing.

Now, it’s not a straight Red Bull drink. It’s the core ingredient, obviously, but McDonald’s decided to church it up with a hearty dose of blue raspberry syrup. As far as syrups go, it’s a pretty good choice — I mean, it’s hard to think of any drink that isn’t at least mildly improved by a tint of blue raspberry. Its sweet and slightly acerbic taste gels well with the gingery, pleasingly caustic energy drink foundation, although I’m sure some hardcore Red Bull fans will think the flavor is too muted.

The freeze-dried dragon fruit is probably going to be the most controversial aspect of the drink. It adds a little more weight and tartness to the beverage, but I’m not really sure it needed it in the first place. Visually, it looks awesome, but I can’t help but feel like it would’ve been an even better drink without the whole “dragonberry” gimmick.

It’s hard to give this drink an objective review because your opinion on it hinges on whether or not you already like Red Bull. If it’s not your kind of drink, this beverage won’t win you over at all. And if you are a devoted Red Bull fan, you may not like all of the accouterments McDonald’s tossed into the formula. Personally, though, I thought it was pretty good and definitely unlike anything else you’ll find on the McDonald’s menu. It’s an aptly named beverage, too; by the time my cup was empty, I was ready to outline notes on the work of Joseph Campbell like a madman.

Needless to say, this drink isn’t for all tastes. But if you’re a dedicated energy drink enthusiast — and need a liquid jolt a Dirty Dr Pepper can’t prescribe — it’s definitely worth checking out.
