Introduction

Ah, the Apple iPhone SE. The Special Edition. Even if the Smaller Edition was more appropriate. And just like the first iPhone SE, its second generation is both - Small, even if larger than the first one, and Special - as such launch happens once in four years or so.

We are sure Apple had plans for a great premiere event last March, but COVID-19 turned everything upside down and such plans were abruptly scrapped. The new iPhone was unveiled fanfare-less on the maker's website, out of the blue, but it quickly became famous for being not only one of the cheapest iPhones ever made but also as one of the season's hottest bang for the buck offers.
Imagine that - bang for the buck coming from Apple! Indeed, the highlight feature of the new iPhone SE is the A13 Bionic chip - that's Apple's latest platform - the one that's powering the iPhone 11 trio. As for the rest, well, it's mostly iPhone 8.
Apple did use the 2.5 years old iPhone 8 as a canvas in more than one way. The shell is the same, as is the screen (sans the 3D Touch layer), same front and rear cameras ergo photo and video capabilities, same stereo speakers, same battery capacity, same charging capabilities.
A thorough look reveals the iPhone SE (2020) is indeed small by today's standards, and while it brings features introduced more than two years ago, those are hardly outdated - the phone is water-resistant, its single camera offers numerous features such as portraits, Smart HDR and even 4K at 60 with both OIS and EIS available, while the stereo speakers are of an excellent quality that is tough to beat even to this very day.

The bezels are what looked old on the iPhone 8, and now they look ancient on this new SE model. They are wonderful as thumb rests for when you are using the phone in landscape orientation for gaming or videos, but they will be a target for many laughs either way. And the battery capacity could have been improved a bit, but we are yet to see the new A13 chip in action, so let's not judge just yet.
And now, it's time to unpack our red iPhone SE.

Unboxing the Apple iPhone SE (2020)

The iPhone retail bundle has seen few changes over the year with the most prominent being the 18W charger replacing the 5W adapter for the iPhone 11 Pro models. That is not the case with the iPhone SE, though.
The Apple iPhone SE (2020) retail box contains the prehistoric 5W charger and the usual Lightning cable. We do appreciate the EarPods that are included with every iPhone, though. Two Apple logo stickers and the SIM ejector complete the SE bundle.
The iPhone SE supports USB-PD fast charging (up to 18W), as well as wireless charging (up to 8W), so at least you are not without other options. You just have to get yourself a quick charger separately.

Design and handling

There are always two ways to look at an iPhone, especially one with such a controversial design as the iPhone 8, sorry, SE. It's either love or hate. It has been this way since the iPhones came into existence, even if specs, features, and prices do help fuel these two feelings, too. But one thing is undeniably true - this is not only the smallest iPhone available but one of the most compact smartphones on the market.
Remember when we called the 6" Xiaomi Mi 9 SE one of the most compact phones and a remarkably pocket-friendly handset? So, we take those back - these titles belong to the iPhone SE now. Thank you, Mi, you may go now.
So, the iPhone SE (2020) is indeed quite small - it measures 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm and weighs just 148g - meaning it is 1cm shorter and 3mm narrower than the Mi 9 SE.
But if we are to compare the new iPhone SE to the old one, well, it's definitely grown bigger - 1.5cm taller and 1cm wider, to be specific. It also gained some 35g - a noticeable load if you are comparing those two directly.
Well, the past couple of years did change the definition of the small smartphone, for the worse if you ask us, and the new iPhone SE is well below the current status quo.
iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone SE (2nd Gen), iPhone SE (1st Gen) But as far as its design is concerned - it's modern but also, a remnant of our digital past. The iPhone SE (2020) uses the same Gorilla Glass panels and aluminum frame the iPhone 8 had back in 2017 - and even then this design was already three-years-old.
And as the most recent teardowns have revealed, Apple has recycled pretty much everything in the iPhone SE - from the hardware design on the outside to the components used inside.
Still - a glass-sandwich body with a metal frame is the default phone design in 2020, so the iPhone SE is as current as possible looking at its bill of materials. Even better, it is IP67-rated for dust and water resistance - something that still many decide not to offer and yet, here were have it on a $400 phone.
Then we look at the front and honestly, we can hear 2014 calling and asking its bezels back. The iPhone SE has large black bezels above and below its LCD screen, and for some of you, they will be too much of an eyesore to bear. We can get behind this, of course - not only the screen doesn't impress with the resolution, but it also makes you lose all that room to what - a Home key and earpiece?
Then again - the earpiece is one of the loudest speakers you can get on a smartphone today, one of two actually, and we are impressed with quality audio coming from the SE stereo speakers. The old 7MP selfie camera is around, now capable of selfie portraits, too.
The Home key is also your Touch ID - a feature many missed when it got the boot on the iPhone X. It is the fastest and most convenient security measure, and on top of that - the Home key is also the better way to work with iOS than the current swiping mess.
Sure, the bezels have the benefit of providing nice grip. Such a powerful small phone will need a proper grip for gaming, and the two non-screen ends provide that in buckets. You can rest your thumbs there comfortably and enjoy your gaming session hassle- and obstruction-free.
The 4.7" IPS LCD screen is familiar - it's the same display we saw on the iPhone 8 with the so-called Retina 326ppi resolution. There are no notches, it's fully utilized by every app and games because of its native 16:9 aspect, it is bright and with excellent contrast and color reproduction. Small - it is. Bad - it is not.
One thing that's missing from the iPhone 8 display is the 3D Touch layer. Apple has ditched the 3D Touch sensors in favor of tap and hold gestures plus feedback from the Taptic Engine. It works almost the same, plus nobody was using the 3D Touch anyway.
The custom-made Gorilla Glass has 2D finish at the front and then transition rather seamlessly into the aluminum frame. The frame itself has a matte finish that provides for some grip and contains all ports and buttons.
The silencer switch and the volume keys are on the left, while the power button and the SIM slot are on the right. The Lightning port, the speaker grille, and the mouthpiece are all at the bottom of the iPhone SE.
The back of the iPhone SE, especially this red one, is as beautiful as it can get. Not having a multiple-camera setup makes for one of the cleanest and stylish rear glass panels we've seen in a while. It is also custom-made by Corning, with 2.5D finish.
The main camera is protruding just a tiny little bit, and a thin metal ring surrounds it. Next, flush with the glass, is the dual-tone quad-LED flash. The iPhone SE barely wobbles on a flat desk, and that's only if you are tapping around the top left part of the phone.
Finally, the iPhone SE is a joy to handle, easily operated with one hand, and it just disappears in pockets. The brushed frame provides enough grip, and even while fingerprint smudges accumulate on the glass with time, the oleophobic coating makes them easy to clean with a quick swipe.

Display

The iPhone SE (2020) borrows iPhone 8 display - yes, the same that was borrowed in the first place from the iPhone 6. The panel in question was introduced way back in 2014, but it was improved over the years with wide color gamut support, True Tone enhancements, and HDR adjustments.
So, the new iPhone SE packs a 4.7" 16:9 LED-backlit IPS LCD screen, also known as Retina display, which has 326ppi or 1334 x 750 pixels. This particular pixel density has been introduced with the iPhone 4, and it is the true meaning behind the word Retina in Apple's world all these years. The iPhone X was first to change that to Super Retina 458ppi.
The screen is flat, protected by a custom-made glass by Corning and has oleophobic coating for additional smudge resistance.
TrueTone color-correction adjustments are available for the iPhone SE display, Night Shift - the blue-light filter, is a part of the iOS feature set, too.
Apple says the screen can display HDR10 and Dolby Vision content. Thanks to the wide color support, the high screen brightness, and contrast, the display can do some improvements to the dynamic range, and you can indeed see some benefits. But a proper HDR-enabled screen, like the iPhone 11 Pro's, can show you true HDR10 with all the benefits.
And now with all these technicalities out of the way, let's look at some numbers.
The Apple iPhone SE (2020) screen can be very bright - we measured 670 nits at the top end of the brightness slider. That's even more than the promised 625 nits from Apple. The black levels are about average, and the iPhone SE panel delivered north of the suggested screen contrast ratio of 1400:1.
The minimum brightness we captured on the white color is 2.7 nits - a great one for reading sessions in the dark!

We did our usual measurements on the iPhone SE screen, and we captured very accurate levels of color rendering. The screen has an average deltaE of 1.4, while the maximum deviation of 2.8 is at point white. All measured colors are well below deltaE of 4, which means the screen has excellent calibration.
These measurements were taken with TrueTone turned off, as it changes the color calibration depending on the ambient light and can fool our colorimeter. For the most realistic colors, you should keep this option off, whereas for the most eye-pleasing rendeding of white and gray - keep it on.

Battery life and charging

The iPhone SE (2020) is powered by 1,821mAh battery - the same capacity as iPhone 8's, though a different cell. You can charge the iPhone SE with its ancient 5W charger, the Pro's 18W charger, or any USB-PD charger really. The iPhone SE also supports wireless charging, so that's an option as well.
The iPhone SE ships with a regular 5V/1A charger plug that replenish 27% of a dead battery in 30 mins, while a full charge requires about 2 hours and 30 mins.
We also tested the iPhone SE with the iPhone 11 Pro 18W charger - it refills about 57% of the SE's battery in 30 mins, while a full charge takes about 100 mins.
The iPhone SE posted balanced scores on our battery test - it can do about 10 hours of 3G calls, north of 13 hours of web browsing on a single charge, or you can watch videos for about 9 hours. The standby endurance turned out above average and thus the good but unremarkable overall endurance rating of 59 hours.
Still, for such a small battery, the screen-on times turned out to be rather respectable.

Our battery tests were automated thanks to SmartViser, using its viSerDevice app. The endurance rating above denotes how long a single battery charge will last you if you use the Apple iPhone SE (2020) for an hour each of telephony, web browsing, and video playback daily. Speakers

The Apple iPhone SE (2020) has two speakers - one dedicated at the bottom and the other one is the earpiece. The bottom one offers more bass than the earpiece, but other than that - their loudness seems balanced enough.

Telsa Chief Executive Elon Musk on Thursday called for Amazon to be broken up, after an author complained on social media about being unable to self-publish a book via the world's largest online retailer.
"This is insane @JeffBezos," Musk tweeted at Amazon's chief. Both men are billionaires and oversee competing space exploration companies on top of their duties at Telsa and Amazon. "Time to break up Amazon. Monopolies are wrong!" Musk added in a second tweet.

The retailer had no comment on Musk's call for its dissolution but said the book in question, by author Alex Berenson, had been blocked in error and was now available for sale via its Kindle e-reading service. The decision to greenlight the book's sale was not due to Musk, Amazon said.
The Tesla chief, who earlier this month said he would take a break from Twitter, has a history of being outspoken on the social media platform. A tweet in 2018 that he had secured funding to take Tesla private led to a lawsuit against Musk by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which the parties later settled. Musk has lashed out about shelter-at-home restrictions to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus as well.
According to a photo of a message Amazon sent Berenson, posted on Twitter, the retailer had taken action because the 22-page book did not comply with guidelines that Amazon did not specify, adding, "we are referring customers to official sources for health information about the virus." Berenson's book is titled, "Unreported Truths about COVID-19 and Lockdowns: Part 1: Introduction and Death Counts and Estimates."
Berenson did not respond to an email requesting comment. After Amazon approved the book's sale, he tweeted, "thanks to @elonmusk and everyone who helped."

US President Donald Trump appears as the first result of suggested accounts when users type "racist" into Twitter's people search, it emerged Wednesday.
The result, reported by the British news outlet The Independent and verified by AFP, highlights the intense discord around the president.
Trump has more than 80 million followers, although there is much dispute about how many of them are genuine, active human Twitter users.
Analysts said the news suggests Trump opponents, more than critics of any other Twitter account, have been labeling him as racist, although the social media giant itself did not confirm this was the case.
Trump has been facing heightened criticism for his comments during protests over police brutality but has always dismissed suggestions that he is racist.
Twitter offered little in the way of explanation, pointing out only that its search algorithms may reflect what is happening on the platform.
Trump, in the midst of a heated war with social media over what he claims is bias, recently signed an executive order calling for more oversight of internet platforms, a move which could prove difficult to enforce.
Greg Sterling, a contributing editor at the website Search Engine Land, said the result suggests that "so many people are using the words 'racist' or 'racism' to respond to or describe Donald Trump, or there's a concerted effort to associate Trump's account with those terms."
Evidently, it is also possible that a large number of supporters defending Trump from charges of racism would also use the word 'racist' in their replies.
Sterling said Twitter's ranking algorithm for individual tweets "uses a variety of signals, including how recently the tweet was published, its relevance (personalisation), user engagement with the tweet, the presence of rich media (such as video or images), and several other variables."
The analyst noted however that in 2007, a concerted effort known as "Google bombing" was able to manipulate search results for then-president George W Bush to associate him with the term "miserable failure" on the search engine until the flaw was corrected.
Kjerstin Thorson, a Michigan State University politics and social media professor, said it would require a detailed analysis to understand the reasons for the association of Trump and racism.
But Thorson said "it's not unlikely this could be an accurate representation of what people are saying" on Twitter and that bias is probably not a factor.
"The platforms have gone out of their way to avoid any appearance of bias," she said.

Samsung's Galaxy M series was introduced as an online-exclusive lineup to compete with Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi and Realme. The devices introduced as a part of this series have gained a lot of popularity thanks to their aggressive pricing compared to Samsung's other offerings. Thanks to their popularity, these smartphones are now also available offline. Samsung recently added another model to this series, called the Galaxy M21. This new smartphone shares a lot of hardware with some of its predecessors but can it stand out? We put the Galaxy M21 to the test to find out.

Samsung Galaxy M21 design

Samsung has been making phones in the Galaxy M series out of plastic to keep costs down. The Galaxy M21 feels like it was designed with a tight budget in mind. The back panel is made out of plastic and has a glossy finish. It picks up fingerprints very easily. Samsung does not provide a case in the box, so you'll have to wipe the device often till you buy one yourself.
The Galaxy M21 is the successor of the Galaxy M20 ₹ 11,447 (Review) but looks much more like the Galaxy M30s ₹ 13,880 (Review) which was launched in mid-2019. However, it does not come in the same flashy colours and is available only in Blue and Black.
The Galaxy M21 has a big display that measures 6.4 inches, and has thin bezels at the top and the sides. The chin is considerably thicker. At the top, it has a waterdrop notch that houses the selfie camera and a tiny earpiece right above it. You can reach the top of the display if you have big hands, else you'll need to shuffle a little to reach the top. However, this phone isn't as big as the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, which we recently reviewed.

The Galaxy M21 is a dual-SIM device and has two Nano-SIM slots. It also has a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion. There is support for dual 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5, dual-band Wi-Fi, and four satellite navigation systems. It packs in a 6,000mAh battery.
The Galaxy M21 runs One UI 2.0 on top of Android 10 which is the latest version of Android. It was still running the February security patch, which is now dated, at the time of this review. The UI is similar to that of the Galaxy M31 which we reviewed earlier this year. With the Galaxy M21, you will need to be careful while setting up the device, or Samsung will send you marketing notifications. The setup process also suggests installing a few other apps, which we skipped.

We found some bloatware preinstalled on the device, including Amazon Shopping, Netflix, Prime Video, Helo, and Dailyhunt. We have seen in the past that Helo and Dailyhunt are capable of generating spammy notifications, so we would recommend that you uninstall them if you don't use them. We also found the stock My Galaxy app pushing notifications throughout the day.
This phone gets an Always-on display mode, and Dolby Atmos is available for earphones and Bluetooth headsets. You also have the option to switch to gesture-based navigation instead of the traditional three-button layout. Other Android 10 goodies include a Dark Mode, which takes full advantage of the Super AMOLED panel on the Galaxy M21. Samsung has also added a Game Booster feature that can block notifications and provides quick shortcuts for apps of your choice.

Samsung Galaxy M21 performance

The Exynos 9611 is a capable processor and can take care of basic apps without any signs of slowing down. However, we did notice that heavy apps took some time to load. Multitasking was smooth and we could switch between multiple apps without needing to wait for them to load all over again.
The fingerprint scanner at the back of the device is quick to unlock the device, and so is face recognition. The AMOLED display is the best part of the Galaxy M21 and we enjoyed watching videos on this smartphone. We found the speaker to be tinny, which dampened the overall experience slightly.
We ran benchmarks on the Galaxy M21 to see how it stacks up against some of its competition. The smartphone managed to score 1,77,661 in AnTuTu which is lower than the 191,981 clocked by the Galaxy M31. This could be down to the difference in RAM between the two devices we tested. However, both these scores are far behind those of other phones in this price segment, such as the Realme 6 ₹ 13,999 (Review) and the Redmi Note 9 Pro which scored 290,210 and 279,978 respectively when we reviewed them.

The Galaxy M21 scored 347 and 1,320 in Geekbench's single-core and multi-core tests respectively. We also saw 43 fps and 9.3 fps in GFXBench's T-Rex and Car Chase respectively. In 3DMark Slingshot, the Galaxy M21 scored 2,097 points which is lower than what some of its competitors achieved.
We played PUBG Mobile on the Galaxy M21 to see how the phone handles it. The game defaulted to the High settings with graphics set to HD and the frame rate set to High. We did notice some occasional stutter in gameplay which prompted us to drop the graphics quality. After playing the game for 15 minutes we noticed that the device was slightly warm to the touch, and registered a 3 percent battery drop.
Battery life for the Galaxy M21 was excellent. Thanks to the big 6,000mAh battery the phone lasted us for close to two full days of regular use. In our HD video loop test, the device managed to last for 21 hours and 48 minutes, but Samsung phones do automatically reduce brightness once the battery falls below a certain level. Also, the big battery takes over two hours to fill up. Using the supplied 15W charger, the device got to 21 percent in 30 minutes and got to 42 percent in an hour.

Samsung Galaxy M21 cameras

Samsung has gone with a triple camera setup on the Galaxy M21, and it is identical to what you get with the Galaxy M30s. The primary camera has a 48-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. There's also an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The camera UI is easy to use. It has a scene optimiser that can detect what the camera is pointed towards and set the phone up accordingly. Other than the regular photo and video modes, it has a Live Focus, Pro, Night, Food, Super Slow-Mo and a few more.
The Samsung Galaxy M21 is quick to lock focus and meter light, but the scene optimiser isn't as responsive. In photo mode, the Galaxy M21 saves 12-megapixel shots by default. In daylight, we found the camera performance to be good, and the Galaxy M21 managed to capture good details, and text at a distance was legible. However, we would have liked a bit more sharpness in the output.

The wide-angle camera has a lower resolution which is evident in photos. It does not manage details as well as the primary shooter. It does offer a wider field of view but there is visible distortion.

For close-ups, the phone managed to create a natural depth effect between the subject and the background in our tests. The subject was in focus and sharp. With the scene optimiser enabled, the phone bumps up the contrast.

When shooting portraits using the Live Focus mode, the Galaxy M21 lets you select the level of blur in the output. It detects edges well and the software also allows you to change the level of blur and the effect after taking a shot.

Low-light camera performance is not as good as what we've seen from some of the other phones in this price range that we have tested. The Galaxy M21 managed to keep noise under control but there was a watercolour-like effect in the output. Quality drops further if you use the wide-angle camera in low light. The Night mode on the Galaxy M21 manages to produce slightly better output, but the phone crops the frame slightly to minimise shakes.

Selfies taken in daylight had good detail, but beautification is enabled by default. The camera UI offers you a cropped view by default but you get a toggle for a wider frame. The selfie camera delivers 12-megapixel photos by default, but you can take a photo at the full 20-megapixel resolution if you change the aspect ratio. In low light, selfies had no noise but grain was visible on zooming in.
Video recording maxes out at 4K for the primary camera but there's has a 10-minute limit for clips, which feels restrictive. The selfie camera is capped at 1080p. Video recorded in daylight had a shimmer effect which could make your footage unusable. There is an ultra-stable mode which delivers better stabilisation. There is no stabilisation at 4K. The shimmer effect was even worse in low light, and the ultra-stable mode did cause a drop in video quality.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy M21 feels a lot like the Galaxy M30s (Review). It shares a lot of key specifications with the older device. The differentiators are Android 10 and a higher resolution selfie shooter, but since the Galaxy M30s recently got an update to One UI 2.0, the selfie camera is pretty much the only differentiator. Surprisingly, Samsung has priced the Galaxy M21 lower than the Galaxy M30s which is still on sale. The lower price and the better chance of getting updated to Android 11 at some point tip the scales in the Galaxy M21's favour.
However, the Galaxy M21 itself is just an average device at this price point. Competitors such as the Realme 6 (Review) and the Redmi Note 9 Pro (Review) offer much more impressive performance and better cameras at roughly the same price.

TikTok India issues clarification amid criticism over acid attacks glorifying video

Most popular social media platform nowadays TikTok has been facing the heat over the video glorifying acid attacks. The National Commission for Women has asked them to remove the video immediately in which a man is seen committing violence against the women. Since then, the app is facing criticism and has also received low ratings on the app store. Now, TikTok India has issued a clarification over the same and has said that they are expecting users to adhere to its policies of what is or is not acceptable.

In a post, TikTok India stated, "Promoting a safe and positive environment is a top priority for TikTok. Our terms of service and community guidelines clearly outline what is and what is not acceptable on our platform. We expect users to adhere to these policies at all times."
"Over the last few days, we have acted on several pieces of content that violated our policies. We have taken action including taking down content, suspending the accounts of the concerned users and are working with law enforcement agencies, as appropriate."

TikTok India has even shared guidelines including the Do's and Don'ts regarding the content that will be shared on the app. On the other hand, in addition to getting the video removed from TikTok, the National Commission for Women has also asked Maharashtra police to take action against the maker of the video.
NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma said in the letter, "The commission is seriously concerned about the increase in crimes against women and the video not only seems to promote violence against women but also shows the patriarchal mindset, which would send a very wrong message to the society through this video made by Faizal Siddiqui on Tik-Tok."
Post the video going viral and facing criticism, TikTok has suspended the account of Faizal Siddiqui. Many Bollywood celebrities like Swara Bhaskar, Pooja Bhatt and others have also questioned the video-sharing platform.

Facebook Messenger Gets Scam Warnings to Help Users Avoid Potentially Harmful Interactions

Facebook on Thursday said that its Messenger app will be watching behind the scenes for scammers using the smartphone communication system.
Safety notices will pop up in Messenger text chats if activity taking place in the background is deemed suspicious by artificial intelligence software, according to director of privacy and safety product management Jay Sullivan.
He said the new safety feature "will help millions of people avoid potentially harmful interactions and possible scams without compromising their privacy."
The feature began rolling out to the Messenger app tailored for Android-powered smartphones in March and will head to Messenger on iPhones next week, according to Facebook.
"Too often people interact with someone online they think they know or trust, when it's really a scammer or imposter," Sullivan said.
"These accounts can be hard to identify at first and the results can be costly."
Artificial intelligence software scans for scammers based on account behaviour, such as sending messages in bulk targeting demographics or geographies, according to Facebook.
Warning notices pop up before people respond to messages of possibly dubious origins.
Since the feature does not involve looking at what is in messages, it should continue to add a layer of safety when Messenger takes to encrypted missives as planned by Facebook.
"As we move to end-to-end encryption, we are investing in privacy-preserving tools like this to keep people safe without accessing message content," Sullivan said.
Messenger already uses software tools to fight spam and thwart efforts by adults to contact minors they don't appear to know.
Messenger has been ramping up capabilities and security as use of online tools to communicate and socialise surges due to restrictions of movement during the pandemic.
Facebook recently unveiled a new video chat service with virtual "rooms" where people can pop in to visit friends, aiming at users turning to the popular Zoom platform during the pandemic.

ndia's antitrust watchdog is looking into allegations that Facebook's WhatsApp is abusing its dominant position by offering payment services to its vast base of messaging app users in the country, three sources told Reuters on Friday.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) is reviewing a complaint filed in mid-March alleging that WhatsApp was bundling its digital payment facility within its messaging app, allowing it to abuse its market position and penetrate India's booming digital payments market, the sources said.
WhatsApp and Facebook did not immediately respond to repeated requests for comment. The CCI also did not respond.
The complaint, which has previously not been reported, comes at a critical time for WhatsApp, which is aggressively working to fully launch its payments platform in India, where it has been beta testing it with 1 million users since 2018.

Lack of regulatory clearances have meant WhatsApp has struggled to offer the service to its around 400 million users in India, its biggest market worldwide.
The CCI can order its investigations arm to conduct a wider probe into the allegations, or throw out the case if it finds no merit in it.
"The case is in initial stages .. senior members of CCI are reviewing it but a final decision hasn't been reached," said the first of the three sources, all of whom declined to be identified as the case details were private.
The antitrust complaint alleges that WhatsApp's large user base meant it was dominant in the messaging app market, and the company was forcing its payments feature on to its existing users.
The two products - WhatsApp's messenger service and its payments feature - are bundled, which could harm competition and violate the country's antitrust laws, the second source said while detailing the allegations.
WhatsApp's payment service will allow users to do inter-bank fund transfers from within the messaging app. It will compete with payment apps of Alphabet's Google and Softbank-backed Paytm, which already have tens of millions of users across India.
While the antitrust case has been filed against both Facebook and WhatsApp, the complainant has urged the watchdog to investigate only WhatsApp, the second source said.It was possible WhatsApp could escape a wider investigation as the extent of any market abuse will be clearer only when it fully launches the service, the source added.
The antitrust complaint is the latest setback for WhatsApp in India.
An Indian legal think-tank last month filed a case in the Supreme Court saying WhatsApp should not be allowed to expand its payments service as it was violating data storage rules.
WhatsApp told the court it will comply with necessary laws before it moves ahead, according to a May 13 court order that also asked Indian regulators to submit its views on the case.
In April, Facebook said it will spend $5.7 billion (Rs. 43,574 crores) to buy a 9.99 percent stake in India's Reliance Industries' digital arm, as it looks to roll out services for grocers and small businesses by capitalising on WhatsApp's extensive reach.

NASA Releases Artemis Accords, Basic Principles for International Moon Exploration Pact

NASA on Friday set the stage for a global debate over the basic principles governing how humans will live and work on the moon, as it released the main tenets of an international pact for moon exploration called the Artemis Accords.
The accords seek to establish 'safety zones' that would surround future moon bases to prevent what the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration called "harmful interference" from rival countries or companies operating in close proximity.
They would also permit companies to own the lunar resources they mine, a crucial element in allowing NASA contractors to convert the moon's water ice for rocket fuel or mine lunar minerals to construct landing pads.
The accords are a key part of NASA's effort to court allies around its plan to build a long-term presence on the lunar surface under its Artemis moon programme.
"What we're doing is we are implementing the Outer Space Treaty with the Artemis Accords," NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine told Reuters, referring to a 1967 international pact that emphasises that space should be used for peaceful rather than military uses.
The framework will be used as an incentive for nations to adhere to US norms of behaviour in space, he added.
"It applies to low Earth orbit, it applies to the moon as well," Bridenstine said. The accords also require countries to adopt standards of the United Nations Space Debris Mitigation Guidelines — which govern the prevention of hazardous space debris — and the Registration Convention, which would require countries to provide orbital details of their "space objects."
The U.S. Congress passed a law in 2015 allowing companies to own the resources they mine in outer space, but no such laws exist in the international community. The Artemis Accords, consistent with the Trump administration's space policy, appear to clear the way for companies to mine the moon under international law and urge countries to enact similar national laws that would bind their private sector's space operations.
"Why would private companies take the risk of going to mine resources if the legal situation was they could be kept from owning them?" Lori Garver, former deputy administrator of NASA, said to Reuters. "So anything this does to clear any of that up could really help advance progress in space development."
China and Russia
Reuters reported earlier this month that the administration of US President Donald Trump was drawing up the Artemis Accords.
In response, Russia's space agency chief Dmitry Rogozin criticised Washington for excluding Russia from early negotiations over the space exploration pact, drawing parallels with U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.
"The principle of invasion is the same, whether it be the Moon or Iraq. The creation of a 'coalition of the willing' is initiated," Rogozin wrote on Twitter. "Only Iraq or Afghanistan will come out of this."
China said it was willing to cooperate with all parties on lunar exploration "to make a greater contribution in building a community with shared future for mankind," a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry said in a statement faxed to Reuters.
The safety zones — while intended to encourage coordination — have prompted questions on whether the accords align with the Outer Space Treaty, which states the moon and other celestial bodies are "not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means."
The size of the safety zones would vary depending on the nature of the site they surround and would not constitute appropriation, Bridenstine said.
They would follow the principle that "basically says I'm gonna stay out of your way, you're gonna stay out of my way, and we can all operate in this space," he added.
However, there is a question over who determines the sizes of the safety zones, said Ram Jakhu, associate professor at McGill University's Institute of Air and Space Law in Canada. "Safety zones are necessary, but they can also be abused in a way that it may become appropriation."
But Mike Gold, NASA's associate administrator for international relations, told Reuters the language on moon mining shouldn't worry other nations.
"The principles that are being put forward here is nothing that we believe any responsible spacefaring nation would disagree with," he said.

US officials have repeatedly accused the Chinese technology giant of stealing American trade secrets and aiding China's espionage efforts, ramping up tensions with the rival superpower while both sides were involved in a long-simmering trade war.
As a result, Huawei has increasingly relied on domestically manufactured technology, but the latest rules will also ban foreign firms that use US technology from shipping semiconductors to Huawei without US permission.
The new restrictions will cut off Huawei's access to one of its major suppliers, the Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC, which also manufactures chips for Apple and other tech firms.
The US last year banned Huawei from using US-manufactured semiconductors in their products.
China has threatened retaliation against the US for the move, including imposing restrictions on major US firms and putting them on an "unreliable entity list", according to an anonymous government source quoted in the Communist Party tabloid Global Times on Friday.
US tech giants Apple, Cisco, Qualcomm, and planemaker Boeing are among the firms that may be targeted, the report said.

US-China relations are again on the rocks with Washington and Beijing trading barbs over the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.
Over the past week, China has also threatened retaliatory measures against the US for restricting the visa stay limits of Chinese journalists, and for several lawsuits filed by US lawmakers against China for the coronavirus pandemic.
Huawei has not yet responded to requests for comment.

WhatsApp for Android Getting Messenger Rooms Integration in Latest Beta: Report

WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out the Facebook Messenger Rooms integration on the beta version of its app for Android. The feature was spotted in the WhatsApp version 2.20.163 beta for Android that is now available to select beta users. It is also speculated that more beta users will be receiving the update soon. Currently, the feature is available to select users in the US only, as per a report. The development comes a day after Facebook globally rolled out its Messenger Rooms feature that allows users to group chat with as many as 50 people. Facebook had also announced that the company will integrate Messenger Rooms on Instagram and Facebook Portal but there is no clarity on the timeline.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, the Facebook-owned WhatsApp messenger has added the Facebook Messenger Rooms shortcut on WhatsApp version 2.20.163 beta for Android. The Messenger Rooms shortcut was also spotted on WhatsApp version 2.20.139 beta for Android, however, it was not available to beta users and more importantly, the integration was not functional. But with the current rollout, it seems that the option is now functional, depending upon the availability of Messenger Room in your region.
To check out the Facebook Messenger Rooms shortcut on the WhatsApp version 2.20.163 beta, users have to open the chat share sheet to find the "Room" button integration. The Rooms shortcut replaces the old Camera button that is still available in the chat bar, as per the report. Once the user selects the Room option, a window reportedly appears, explaining the feature.The new window on Whatsapp version 2.20.163 beta highlights text saying that Rooms are protected by Messenger's encryption and privacy controls. However, it is added that "they [video group calls] aren't end-to-end encrypted."
The report further claims that the beta users on this version could find the Rooms shortcut in the call tab as well. The Call tab on WhatsApp beta for Android is present at the top right corner of the app. Once the beta user selects the Room icon in the call tab, a new window appears that asks whether the users want to continue to the Messenger Rooms.
Meanwhile, Facebook has started rolling out the Messenger Rooms feature globally for its users. The feature allows as many as 50 people to join a single video chat without the need for a Facebook account.

Realme Narzo 10 Review, Top Mid Range Compititor ?

Realme has launched the Narzo 10 and Narzo 10A smartphones to target young people, particularly those who value style and gaming performance above all else. The company wanted to create a new sub-brand to emphasise these features, and to create a separate personality for what would otherwise be simple low-cost phones. The Narzo 10 and Narzo 10A are both priced to meet specific targets, and they slot in below the Realme 6. Today, we'll be reviewing the Narzo 10, which is the more expensive model of the two.
There aren't many surprises to discover about this phone - Realme announced the Narzo 10 and Narzo 10A smartphones before the national lockdown went into effect, but was only able to actually launch them now because of the coronavirus imposed rules to enforce social distancing prevented any sale. In addition to that, the Narzo 10 is already sold as the Realme 6i in some other countries, with some India-specific touches.

Realme Narzo 10 design

Although this is a budget phone, Realme has come up with a rather premium-looking design for the rear. The Narzo 10 is available in That Green and That White (which in other countries are sold as Green Tea and White Milk). Both options feature a pattern of vertical pinstripes down the rear that seem to shift from side to side when you move this phone around under the light. It reminds us of the Onion and Garlic finishes of the Realme X Master Edition, and in fact they've all been created by the same Japanese designer, Naoto Fukasawa.
It isn't garish at all, in like some of the gradients and patterns we've seen before, and still catches the eye. Our That White unit looks quite fresh and sophisticated, and if you aren't a fan of the colour or pattern you can always use a case. We would have liked something different for the camera module though – Realme has recycled the same vertical strip in the upper left corner for multiple generations now.
The front of this phone is completely plain, with a waterdrop notch at the top of the screen and a somewhat thick chin below it. The white unit has a matte silver frame, while the green version will have a matching green one. The overall look is very slick for a budget smartphone.

Thanks to its 20:9 aspect ratio screen, the Realme Narzo 10 is relatively tall and narrow, but it's also 9mm thick and relatively hefty at 199g. It's relatively easy to use and live with, and the upside of that weight is a 5000mAh battery – which we'll get to shortly. We found it a bit hard to reach the top of the screen when using this phone with one hand. Thankfully, the back isn't slippery at all.
Realme has used Gorilla Glass 3 for the display and there's a pre-applied screen protector, but it doesn't quite reach the edges of the glass, leaving the corners vulnerable. You do get a plastic case in the box, though.
The Narzo 10 has a fingerprint sensor on the back, which we found slightly out of reach. The power and volume buttons are well positioned on the right and left respectively. The removable tray has two Nano-SIM slots as well as a microSD card slot. We're happy to see a USB Type-C port at the bottom, along with a 3.5mm audio socket and a single speaker.
The overall polish of the Realme Narzo 10 is pretty impressive, considering its price of just Rs. 11,999. It doesn't come across as a budget phone, but then again the entire segment is highly competitive.

The main attraction of this phone is its MediaTek Helio G80 SoC, which is meant to be targeted at gamers. The Helio G-series chips have powerful integrated graphics capabilities, and this will be our first experience with the G80 although others in the series have proven themselves in the past. It has two 2GHz ARM Cortex-A75 cores for power and six more Cortex A55 cores for efficiency. MediaTek states that it can dynamically manage the CPU, GPU and memory based on heat, power, and the demands of different usage scenarios.
Another interesting part of Realme's Narzo strategy is to launch this phone in only one configuration, with no variants. You only get 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, both of which are relatively generous. We like this approach, since it avoids extra complication in the company's already crowded lineup – there are already plenty of other options at nearby price points.
The 6.5-inch display has an HD+ 720x1600-pixel resolution. Some buyers might prefer a full-HD panel, and you can find those in other phones at this price level. For gaming though, a lower resolution means less stress on the GPU, so it might actually be an advantage.
The main reason for the Narzo 10's weight is its 5000mAh battery which should be an advantage for users who don't want to cut their gaming sessions short. 18W fast charging is supported and you get an 18W adapter in the box, which is good to see.

You won't find many of the latest connectivity standards but we do have all the basics covered with Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 5, and GPS. All the usual sensors are listed, including a gyroscope which will come in handy for gaming.
Realme ships this phone with Android 10 and version 1.0 of its Realme UI, which is similar to sister company Oppo's ColorOS. It looks fairly fresh and includes major Android features such as Digital Wellbeing, but still has many customisations that will be familiar to users of Oppo phones. These include a Game Space tool that claims to boost performance, App Cloner to let you use multiple accounts, and various gestures.
You can use the Smart Sidebar from within any app to quickly multitask or launch actions. There are multiple gesture navigation options to choose from, but the stock Android 10 or 9 schemes are not among them. The calculator app can run windowed on top of other apps. The most interesting touch is that you can spoof your call history, messages, contacts, and calendar, so apps that try to read your personal information get useless junk instead.
On the downside, there's a lot of bloatware even after choosing not to install a bunch of sponsored apps during the initial setup process. Thankfully the third-party apps are all removable. We also saw lots of spam notifications with misleading or sensational clickbait from the default Realme UI browser before we had even opened it once. The browser itself is full of ads and sadly it can't be removed or disabled.

We found the Narzo 10 pleasant enough in everyday use but we did face very occasional touch response issues, which made it seem as though the device didn't want to do what we were asking it. We also noticed a bit of sluggishness when loading or quitting heavy apps. 4GB of RAM should be more than enough for most people's needs though, and we had no trouble multitasking between everyday apps.
As for the brand new MediaTek Helio G80, we found benchmark performance that was superior to that of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 used in the Realme 5s ₹ 10,999 (Review), but no match for the Snapdragon 720G found in some slightly more expensive phones. Surprisingly, the Helio G80 managed only slightly better scores than the Helio G70 used in the Realme C3 ₹ 7,499 (Review) and the Narzo 10A. AnTuTu gave us 202,637 points, and Geekbench's single-core and multi-core tests showed scores of 386 and 1,342 respectively. Graphics performance is supposed to be this SoC's strong point, and it managed 1,796 points in 3DMark Sling Shot Unlimited, as well as 31fps and 17fps respectively in GFXBench's Manhattan 3.1 and Car Chase scenes.
We found the display to be bright and crisp enough for gaming and video streaming. Colours aren't the most vibrant, but once again we have to remind ourselves of the low price of the Realme Narzo 10. The single speaker is also just about okay for games and casual video watching, but you wouldn't want to use it for music.
PUBG Mobile ran reasonably well at the High setting, and we found that gameplay was smooth. We did notice the upper rear and the top part of the frame getting quite toasty after less than five minutes, but a case should help people live with this. Asphalt 9: Legends was also enjoyable and we didn't have trouble with stuttering or lag.
One of the Realme Narzo 10's best assets is its 5000mAh battery. In our experience, the phone lasted through a full day of use, which included about an hour of playing games, streaming a full-length movie, and lots of casual Internet usage. We were left with over 30 percent on the battery indicator at the end of a full day. Our HD video loop test ran for an incredible 25 hours, 31 minutes. For many buyers, this will more than make up for the phone's weight.

We have a quad rear camera setup on this phone, which goes to show how easily a budget phone can be made to seem high-end. The 2-megapixel macro and 2-megapixel depth sensors are now pretty common across all low-cost phones, so you won't feel as though you're missing out on anything. However, they are of limited utility, as we've seen many times already. Macros are blotchy and rough, with the resolution limited to only 1600x1200 pixels, so this camera should be used more for fun than anything else.

However, the primary 48-megapixel camera should not be dismissed so easily. Shots that we took under bright sunlight had lots of detail and exposures were well balanced. We did notice a little blurring and unsteady focus in several of our test samples, though. Close-ups were of course better defined than landscapes. This might not be the kind of camera that you'd want to rely on for capturing all your important moments, but it's good for such a low-cost phone and will do for most casual purposes.

Even the 8-megapixel wide-angle camera delivers fairly decent shots as long as there's good lighting, but there was definitely some distortion even towards the middle of the frame sometimes. We noticed duller colours and a yellower tone overall, though some compromises were to be expected.

The portrait mode looked like it was completely missing our subject when the effect was being processed for the phone's viewfinder, but the saved images seemed more natural. Selfies were beatified by default and we didn't like how aggressive the skin smoothening effect was. The Narzo 10 will also attempt to make your face slimmer and enlarge your eyes, and it takes a few taps to disable all of this. Selfies were just about okay, but we weren't too impressed.
Night mode works with the primary as well as the wide-angle cameras, and it does make a slight difference if you manage to stand still for five seconds each time you take a shot. There wasn't much detail, and quite a bit of noise in most of our test shots. The wide-angle camera should not be used at night because it simply cannot capture enough light to be useful. All in all though, we weren't too disappointed with the Narzo 10's low-light performance considering its price.

Video is not stabilised, and the quality was rough when we were walking while filming, but decent enough when we stood still. Colours and motion aren't that great, but the Narzo 10 does well enough for casual use. You can't switch cameras while recording video, but the wide-angle camera's quality isn't great and we wouldn't want to use it much anyway. Video shot at night had very little detail.
The camera app isn't one of our favourites – it takes at least three taps to get to the macro mode, and the wide-angle camera is activated by using a set of zoom buttons ranging from Wide to 5X, even though all zooming beyond 1X is done digitally through the primary camera. There's scene recognition that did recognise cats and dogs, but it's unclear what effect it has on the camera's settings. In Macro mode we were told to stay 4cm from our subject for the best focus, but there were no prompts to move closer or farther so we had no idea when our positioning was optimal. Other modes include 48MP full-resolution, Expert, Slow-mo video, Panorama, and Timelapse.

Verdict

Realme has injected fresh energy into the budget smartphone market. The Narzo 10 isn't quite an all-rounder but it will meet the requirements of many people, especially the target demographic of young gamers with tight budgets. We think a little more emphasis on camera quality would make people even happier, but Realme does offer phones only a little higher up the price ladder for those who need more. Performance is definitely improved compared to the previous generation of phones at this price level, and gaming is the natural application of a more powerful CPU.
Battery life is clearly the biggest strength of the Realme Narzo 10. It's also quite attractive and well built. On the downside, the cameras aren't that great, and we really dislike the software bloat and spam that we had to deal with.
The Narzo 10 is a very strong contender if your budget is capped at Rs. 12,000. If you can spend a little more, you might want to consider the Realme 6 (Review) and the Redmi Note 9 Pro (Review) instead.

France to Impose Digital Tax This Year Regardless of Any New International Levy

France will tax big digital businesses this year whether there is progress or not towards an international deal on a levy, its finance minister said on Thursday, adding such a tax had never been more legitimate or more necessary.
Nearly 140 countries from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) are negotiating the first major rewriting of tax rules in more than a generation, to take better account of the rise of big tech companies such as Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Google that often book profit in low-tax countries.
Paris offered in January to suspend its digital tax on tech companies' income in France until the end of the year while any international deal was negotiated.
However, the fallout from the coronavirus outbreak has left finance ministries most focused on saving their economies, potentially jeopardising the end of the year deadline.
"Never has a digital tax been more legitimate and more necessary," Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire told journalists on a conference call, adding such companies were doing better than most during the coronavirus crisis.
"In any case, France will apply as it has always indicated a tax on digital giants in 2020 either in an international form if there is a deal or in a national form if there is no deal."
In the Czech Republic by contrast, Finance Minister Alena Schillerova said she may delay the introduction of a digital tax until next year, to take advantage of any international rule, and lower the rate to 5 percent from a currently proposed 7 percent.
France's national tax has been a source of contention with Washington, which considers that it unfairly targets US digital companies.
Pay up
Europe has long pushed to make hugely profitable large tech companies doing business over the internet pay tax where they sell their services, rather than in tax havens deliberately chosen under what is called "aggressive tax optimisation".
EU politicians, seeking funds to prevent climate change and diminish wealth differences across the 27-nation bloc, want to see a company like Google, with an annual global revenue of more than $160 billion (roughly Rs. 12.13 lakh crores), pay more tax in the European countries where it makes money, preferably at a uniform rate.
Frustrated with the lack of global progress because of opposition from the United States where the tech giants are based, some countries like France introduced their own digital tax last year. Italy, Britain, and Spain have also either already introduced their own digital taxes or plan to do so.
Such moves triggered threats of retaliation via trade tariffs from Washington.
The urgency for a solution is increased by the COVID-19 pandemic, which triggered lockdowns around the globe and a shift to working from home. This is likely to boost the revenues of Internet giants but also makes EU governments even more in need of cash to restart their economies from their deepest ever recession expected this year.
Past attempts to create an EU-wide digital tax have failed in the face of opposition from Ireland, where many big US tech companies book profits, and some Nordic countries.
