The Glass House Winery, This Place is Bananas

These are some of the pictures I took at The Glass House Winery in Free Union, VA during a visit yesterday, a very tropical experience! We were relaxing in their beautiful arboretum surrounded by banana trees and other definitely non-native flora. A welcoming warm place to spend an otherwise chilly Saturday afternoon. The yummy chocolates you see pictured here were hand crafted by an in-house chocolatier. I couldn't capture this picture before one piece went missing!

All of the wine was delicious, and I left with a bottle of the dessert wine Megio del Sesso, a chocolate wine made with Norton, Cambourcin and Cab Frant grapes and real chcoloate. Delicious! Here is view from within the arboretum overlooking their large pond, a perfect setting.

During your stay at The Inn at Sugarhollow Farm, you will have a great oppurnity to visit all of the wonderful wineries along the Appellation Trail nearby. Be sure to stop in at The Glass House. You won't be disappointed. The staff was very knowledgable and friendly. If you get a chance to speak with the owner Jeff Sanders, be sure ask him about the lightning strike!

The UVa Chamber Music Festival organizers are out to prove that there is more than just Cavalier basketball in town this season. Charlottesville Restaurant Week begins Monday, January 23 and runs through Sunday, January 29. Now is your chance to eat like a prince and pay like a pauper -- and all for a good cause! And - in conjunction with Restaurant Week this Charlottesville Bed and Breakfast is offering a $20 discount per night on any room for your stay Sunday night through Thursday night, January 22 - 26. Mention this blog when you make your reservation.

During Restaurant Week, for just $26 diners select the prix fixe menu which includes an appetizer, entree and dessert. A $1 donation goes to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. How to do Restaurant Week

The very first Charlottesville Restaurant Week had foodies buzzing and tables filling up faster than a top chef can slice a ripe tomato. Ditto for this one in January 2012. Getting in on the fun is easy– but it requires a little planning. Here’s how:

Step 1: Mark your calendar for Monday, January 23rd through Sunday, January 29th

Step 2: Peruse the menus from the participating restaurants to decide which ones suit your fancy. With twenty places participating, you can’t visit one every night!

Step 2: Call each restaurant directly to make your reservation, and mention that you’re coming in for “Restaurant Week.” Reservations are first-come, first-served; and chefs report that interest has been running high, so don’t tarry.

Step 4: Please show up on time, and make sure you’re dressed to make your mama proud, since some of the participating establishments have dress codes.

Step 5: Make sure you order off the special “Restaurant Week” menu, as all of the participating restaurants will also offer their regular— i.e. more expensive— menu. (Everyone will be dismayed, and you might end up washing dishes, if you end up ordering the $45 flaming surf-and-turf that’s not part of the special prix fixe menu.)

Step 6: Savor your meal, and when paying your bill, please remember that drinks, tax, and tips are not included.

Before you turn in, if you can tear yourself away from a cozy fire, perhaps you will want to step out on the upper deck for a bit of star gazing. A clear night in the Blue Ridge provides for a spectacular light show that can hold it's own with any old man made fireworks display. It's a sight you’ll never see in the city! We'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne, to remember days gone by and face unafraid the plans that we've made for the new year. Can you think of a better way to spend a frosty winter evening?

When it's time for bed, you can retire to one of our charming and tastefully appointed guest rooms, either in the Main Inn or in the Farmhouse. You'll soon discover our comfortable beds, so comfortable, in fact, that our guests tell us from time to time that it's the best sleep they've had in years. You may be tempted to sleep in on Saturday morning. Not too late though, you don't want to miss breakfast at 8:30 AM. If the smell of fresh brewed Greenberry's coffee doesn't stir you, the thought of Dick's exquisitely prepared breakfast will. We'll have plenty of perfectly scrambled eggs waiting for you along with pumpkin pancakes and sausage. To create the whole southern country breakfast experience, Dick usually makes a delightful grits souffle or a potato casserole and Hayden can always be counted on to make either her homemade biscuits or muffins. And, of course, we'll have lots of fresh fruit or local apples sauteed with just the right amount of cinnamon and brown sugar, in case you wake with a morning fruit craving.

After such a satisfying breakfast you'll be ready to seize the day, which is a good thing because there are literally mountains of things to do in or around the Hollow. Spend the day hiking the Blue Ridge, walk the paths of our founding fathers with a visit to Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland or Montpelier. Or, with the memory of those local wines firmly on your palate, head off on Saturday to tour a few of the wineries in the area. Since many of the smaller boutique wineries in the area aren't open during the week, Saturday would be the perfect day to check out our friends at Stinson Vineyards located just as you come into Sugar Hollow, Mountfair Vineyards, or the Glass House Winery, where you can pair a truly exceptional glass of wine with gourmet chocolate crafted by their in-house chocolatier. Don't worry about a GPS, we'll send you off with exact directions and be waiting here in the Hollow to welcome you back. If there is a little time left in the afternoon, perhaps you'll want to disappear for a nap, soak in a tub, enjoy a good book in one of our quiet reading nooks or even check out a college bowl game in our library (Dick will definitely have a game on in the kitchen).

Whatever activity you decide to do during the day, you'll be hungry by the time Saturday evening rolls around and we will be pulling out all the stops! We're planning to serve to serve a scrumptious dinner around 6:30 pm. First you'll sit down to a lovely baby spinach and romaine salad, complimented with mandarin oranges, purple onions, rich feta cheese and soy nuts with a homemade apple vinaigrette dressing. After the salad, we'll bring out your choice or either beef bourguignon that would impress even Julia Child, served with garlic mashed potatoes and herb seasoned vegetables or baked salmon in a dill cream sauce, served with rice pilaff and herb seasoned vegetables. Wow! Save room for dessert because we'll be serving a moist coconut pound cake with lemon glaze, an outstanding way to end such an exceptional meal. Maybe you will enjoy your dessert with a hot cup of fresh brewed coffee, decaffeinated, if you prefer, so you can ring in the new year before retiring to a comfy bed where you will sleep like a baby.

Of course, on Sunday we'll send our guests off down the mountain and back to the real world with the kind of hearty breakfast we are known for; one that our guests have come to expect. When it's time to leave, we'll be there to help you load up the car if you need. It will give us a chance to say goodbye to old and new friends alike and to thank you for joining us as we celebrate the new year in the mountains. Maybe, to complete the experience, as you drive off down the Hollow back to wherever you call home, we be there on the front porch, waving and saying - yes, you guessed it - "Ya'll come back now, you hear!"

For all those nonbelievers, we can assure you that the proof is in the cheese. The faithful nuns at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Crozet, VA, near Charlottesville and just down the road from Sugar Hollow make 2-pound wheels of the best Gouda cheese you ever tasted.

If you are a city mouse and would like to be a country mouse if only for a day or so, head on out of the city and come stay at The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm, just a hop, skip and a jump from the monastery where you can purchase cheese destined to fulfill all your culinary expectations and satisfy every epicurean desire.

The proceeds from sale of this truly delicious cheese go to a most worthy cause for they provide the income that supports the sisters' lives of prayer and charity. Now, I cannot think of a better bang for your buck. In fact, we have given Our Lady of the Angels Monastery cheese often as Christmas presents to friends and family over the years. So, if you are thinking this may be the perfect gift during the holidays for someone with an appreciation of culinary delights, here's how:

Cheese may be purchased daily at the monastery (except Sundays and Thursdays) from 9-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. One may also phone in an order (434-823-1452) or mail in an order form (found on their website). Not desiring to be too high-tech the nuns have not included online sales as part of their sales effort. The Christmas season is their busiest, so purchase now before it's gone. The 2-pound wheel is $25 when purchased at the monastery and $34 by mail.

In case you are curious...the cheese making begins on a Wednesday with the delivery of 6,000 pounds of milk delivered from a Shenandoah Valley dairy farm. This 6,000 pounds soon become 600 pounds of Gouda cheese. The nuns make cheese 30 times a year, sell all they make which is sufficient to provide for their needs and they have no plans to increase production.

Looking for things to do in this fall? The 17th Annual Artisans Studio Tour takes place in Charlottesville and Surrounding Counties on November 12th and 13th from 10am until 5 pm.
It's that time of year: the leaves are falling from the trees as the wind, whipping through the Hollow, as if prompted by the hand of Mother Nature herself, carries them away to some destination unknown. It's a little past peak so we only have a few more days to enjoy the fall foliage. The top of the Blue Ridge is pretty much done, but there's still a lot of vibrant color in the Hollow. Even after the leaves are but a memory, however, there's still plenty to do and see in and around the Hollow.

Take for instance, the Artisans Studio Tour is this weekend where locals and tourist alike can tour 19 studios in and around C'ville and meet the 25 artisans participating this year. The Artisans Studio Tour was founded in 1994 by a group of area artisans to enhance the community's awareness of professional artisans living and working in this beautiful region. This year, artists will again open their studios to the public to show off their work and demonstrate their creative processes. There's a rigorous approval process that each participant goes through to ensure the crafts are of the highest quality. But it's worth it for it continues a long held tradition of showcasing Virginia's most talented artisans.

Craft lovers can expect to see examples of some of Virginia’s finest crafts including pottery, furniture, weaving, fabric design, jewelry, stained glass, clothing, baskets and wood turning. There will be artisan demonstrations, opportunities to see first hand the working processes of each studio, and gain some invaluable hands-on experience. Plus, it is a perfect time to purchase the work of talented area artisans as unique gifts for the holiday season or merely add to cherished collections. Participants will also enjoy food and beverages from some of the area's best establishments as well as artisan-prepared treats. Wow! Count me in!

Folks staying at a certain quaint little Charlottesville Bed & Breakfast will meet an artist who lives right here in the Hollow. Fred Williamson is an extremely talented guy who's wood bowls feature the special character of selected local trees turned on his homemade lathe. His work really is a sight to see.

Thomas Jefferson and Natural History Walk on Saturday October 1st

When folks come to the Hollow to stay at The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm this time of year, we always try to direct them to fun and interesting activities that take place outdoors. It is such a beautiful area made more so by this glorious time of year.

One big recommendation for this weekend is to head to Monticello (about a 25 minute drive from the Hollow) where you will find Thomas Jefferson's passion for gardening and natural history on display.
Peggy Cornett, Monticello Curator of Plants, is scheduled to guide a two hour tour of the forests of Monticello. It should be the perfect fall day (with temperatures in the 60s) to examine autumn wildflowers, seedpods and nuts, trees, indigenous wildlife, fungi and insects. A fun geological excursion of the sort the sage of Monticello would have known well. Wear comfortable and sturdy shoes, maybe even your hiking boots, because Peggy plans to walk all over Mr. Jefferson's mountain! The tour starts at 9:30 am and only cost $15. Meet in the Garden Center at the Visitor Center.

Of course, after a two or three hour hike in the woods and maybe a glass of wine at a nearby winery like Blenhiem, we'll be waiting to warmly receive you back here in the Hollow. It should be cool enough for a fire in the family room fireplace. And, as luck would have it, we have one room left. Come see us!

Monarch Butterfly Migration: a Sign of Fall in Sugar Hollow

There are few certainties in life (besides death and taxes, of course) but folks who've had a chance to come to The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm in the fall will tell you with absolute certainty that, rain or shine, the Hollow is breathtakingly beautiful in the fall. And some fated few will tell of witnessing one of the world's great wonders first hand: the annual migration of Monarch butterflies as they pass through the Hollow making their way south from distant lands in the north. It is a certainty as old as the Blue Ridge that occurs every year around this time without a lot of fanfare.

We have several purple butterfly bushes around our patio on the western side of the Main Inn. Butterflies of all kinds adore the purple bushes and we adore sitting out there to admire the butterflies as they feed and flutter around. This time of year we are especially lucky in that we are treated to the migration of the Monarch Butterflies stopping to feed here in this peaceful place before proceeding on with their long journey home. Some mornings we've admired over a hundred Monarchs swooping down for a brief respite on the purple butterfly bush blossoms. Now try as I may, I can't think of a better way to spend a morning or an afternoon. Breakfast on the patio in the morning is the perfect way to start the day. Linger over coffee and enjoy the Monarch's dance as you plan your day (don't worry, we'll help you find your way). Like the Monarchs, destine to follow their path home, perhaps you'll decide to follow the Appellation Trail to sample some of the region's finest wines before returning to the Hollow. You can come back to enjoy the afternoon antics of the Monarchs (or the deer, fox and turkeys as they scurry about) over a glass of wine. Our second story deck is just the right setting for such an afternoon.

Over the next few weeks we will continue to see a flourish of Monarchs passing through on their way to the mountains of northwest Mexico. If you want to witness one of natures truly spectacular dramas unfold before your eyes, hurry. Clear your calendar. Ask mom if she'll watch the kids. Leave out some extra dry food for the cat and head out of town to Sugar Hollow. Of course, this time of year we stay pretty busy, especially on the weekends. You can check availability here. If the room you want is not available for Friday and Saturday, all the more reason to take a few days off during the week. Tell your boss you need a couple of mental health days. What are you waiting for? A trip to the Hollow in the fall is worth the effort. And, I can tell you with absolute certainty, the Monarchs just won't wait. Come see us!

The 24th Annual Virginia Film Festival Starts November 3rd in Charlottesville

Well, fall sure does seem to be in the air this week. And when it's autumn in Virginia, people around the Hollow start thinking about the Virginia Film Festival, held each year in Charlottesville.

The 24th Annual Virginia Film Festival starts on November 3rd and runs through November 6th. The Festival is presented by the University of Virginia's College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and is a four-day celebration of the magic of the movies featuring first-run features and timeless classics, high-profile industry insiders and up-and-coming stars, and filmmakers from throughout Virginia and beyond. It is a hugely popular event, both regionally and nationally, in which leading cultural experts take part in interesting discussions about the world of film as well as the world in which we live. The festival features special events throughout the weekend and invites the entire community to dive into the art of film in exciting and inspirational ways.

Attending the Virginia Film Festival is a fantastic way to spend an autumn weekend. Southern Living Names Charlottesville, Virginia the Best College Town in the Country

As a bed and breakfast in the Blue Ridge we subscribe to several magazines. Our guests love to relax in one of our cozy chairs and peruse the latest edition of their favorite magazine. Truth be told, we love to relax in one of our cozy chairs with our favorite magazines as well (if we're fortunate enough to have the time!). Of course, Southern Living is always high up on everyone's favorite magazine list. So we were excited to see that Southern Living named Charlottesville, Virginia the best college town in the country. Living in the Hollow, among all the beauty of the Blue Ridge at the foot of the Shenandoah Park, and surrounded by the grandeur of nature, we are only a short drive to all the cultural attractions in and around C'ville, including Thomas Jefferson's vision of an academic village called the University of Virginia.

In naming C'ville the best college town to live in, Southern Living cited several features that we are aware of (and proud to live around), including "rolling vineyards, the Blue Ridge Mountains . . . [and]. . . the red brick Downtown Mall." The article goes on to point out that the area is such a special place that "it's easy to see why so many students graduate from the University of Virginia and stay put." Indeed it is! Southern Living rated towns based upon the local vibe, the variety and availability of good and affordable restaurants and shops as well as the commitment to the support of the arts. Based on such criteria, it is easy to see why C'ville tops the list.

In touting the the many attributes of the little college town down the road from the Hollow, Southern Living did not mention the many wonderful and charming inns (like ours) that thrive in this area. If the folks at Southern Living are not aware of the great B&Bs in the area, we here at The Inn at Sugar Hollow Farm cordially invite Southern Living to come to the Hollow to experience first hand this very special place.

University Of Virginia Lands on Architectural Digest's Top Ten List for College Campuses

It is so wonderful living in the Hollow, among all the beauty of the Blue Ridge and surrounded by the majesty of nature, but, now and again, we are reminded of how lucky we are to be so close to C'ville and all the cultural attractions nearby, especially Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's mountain home as well as Mr. Jefferson's vision of an academic village called the University of Virginia.

So we were proud (but not surprised) to learn that the University of Virginia has landed on a popular architectural magazine's top 10 list for the best architecture among college campuses. Architectural Digest cited the Rotunda at the University of Virginia and its historic Lawn, which the magazine says is "a vibrant, accommodating gathering spot." Although the Rotunda is currently undergoing renovations, you can still literally walk in the footsteps of the man who wrote the Declaration of Independence! Of course, in addition to serving as our third President and known for drafting the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, Thomas Jefferson founded the University and designed the Rotunda, modeling it after Rome's Pantheon.

If you're thinking about heading to the C'ville this weekend to check out an architectural feat or hang out in a vibrant accommodating gathering spot (of which there are many), you'll probably need a place to stay.
