Well to be fair – ANY website! But if you’re running a WordPress website AND you are running Facebook campaigns, you absolutely should have the Facebook Pixel installed as part of a re-marketing strategy- and here’s why…

1. You can serve adverts to people who happen across your website

It might be from a google keyword search, or they’ve clicked a link from another site through to yours or perhaps happened across your account on Twitter or Instagram. If they hang around and like what they read, but what if they like what they read and forget all about your wonderful little website, services and products? They’ve gone forever… Not if if you have the FB Pixel installed.

Here’s an example of how you might use this audience:

Set up a custom audience in Facebook Adverts Manager called “All website visitors”.

Use the URL of your website in the URL field. (This will depend on if you have a stand a lone account or a business manager account)

Select 180 days tracking (so anyone that has visited your website in the last 6 months).

Hit save and sit back and wait for Facebook to populate your audience – doesn’t take too long!

Set up an advert with your latest blog post.

Use your new audience.

Watch the engagement on your post compared to audiences you may have been targeting previously.

2. You can show people adverts that have previously shown an interest in specific products and services

By really delving down and using your tracking pixel to your advantage, you can show products and services to people who have visited specific areas or URLs of your website i.e. if someone visited a page on your site selling a piece of silver jewellery, you can serve them an advert for that particular piece of jewellery or similar pieces to entice them back to buy. Not only that, but you could serve them an advert offering a discount on the piece of jewellery or encourage them to sign up to your newsletter to get access to a discount.

Here’s how you might use this tactic:

Take one of your most popular products/services or categories.

Set up a custom audience, but this time use the specific pages or your website option.

Select a lower day of tracking – maybe 30 days if it’s a physical product, more if it’s a service.

Save the audience.

Create an advert, carousel or perhaps an offer to send to those people now populating your custom audience.

Set a small budget to test the reaction and conversions.

3. You can track conversions, leads, landing pages and more!

Want to know if your ads are REALLY working? By setting up a goal for your adverts i.e. conversion, sale, lead, page view etc. you can track exactly how well your adverts are working and the cost per conversion you are getting for your budget. Want to know how much it costs to add someone to your mailing list? Want to know how much it costs to get someone to make that purchase? The only way to know for sure is to use the Facebook Pixel on your website and set your ad campaign to track those conversions. (You need to make sure that you select the correct advert for your conversion too, if the goal of your advert is to make sales then make sure you select “conversions” when you set up your advert. If you want to make sure you’re getting people who are most likely to sign up for your newsletter then make sure you select “leads” etc.)

4. You can use the audiences you create to create “lookalike” audiences – invaluable!

Set up an audience to track people who get to your thank you page, or order thank you page – this way you will create an invaluable audience of people who have already bought your products or signed up for your lead magnet or newsletter. You can then USE that audience to create a “lookalike” audience – so people who are similar to those who are already your customers and are more likely to buy or sign up with you. And Facebook does all the hard leg work for you!

Now you’ve got an idea of why you should have the Facebook Pixel installed, some simple strategies you can use and how it can benefit your bottom line as a small business, you might want to dig a little deeper and come up with a more complex strategy to draw in interested parties.

Example 1

Sign up for a course/webinar

Promoting webinar/course landing page to a cold audience.

Advertise a related blog post/article advert to those who didn’t sign up but visited the page (acknowledging their interest and proving your authority on the subject with similar related article)

Those people who visited the article page will then go into a custom audience that’s either “specific service related” and can be sent a lead magnet instead, which may then related back to the webinar or course you were originally promoting.

Example 2

Selling a physical product

Promoting Wedding related gifts to a cold audience

By tracking people that landed on this page to “browse” you could then show them specific products that may have been viewed by them on the website (have specific product pages being tracked or go one step further and create a product catalog).

OR you could send an offer advert/discount to them to encourage the sale.

3 things you need to know and take note of before setting up some of the above:

Custom audiences require AT LEAST 20 people in the audience, if your web traffic is low you will need much more for these tactics to work.

If you don’t have a reasonable budget of say £5 per day and are able to run split tests (one or more adverts using different images and copy) your testing will take longer and possible cost more in the long run.

Product catalogs can be set up using third party platforms Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Magento.

N.B make sure you have the Facebook Pixel installed first to try and test ANY of the above. Need help? Get in contact with me today!

Does the thought of changing over to https:// protocol and the mere mention of SSL feel you with fear? “That’s something big companies need to do – not little ole me!”

Unfortunately not – it’s for everyone and every site. It will make your site more secure AND reassure your visitors that their information is safe when they visit your website. Particularly important if you’re running an online shop! Google recently announced as from July 2018 it will begin to mark websites without a certificate as “Not Secure”.

On February 8th 2018 Google said:

For the past several years, we’ve moved toward a more secure web by strongly advocating that sites adopt HTTPS encryption. And within the last year, we’ve also helped users understand that HTTP sites are not secure by gradually marking a larger subset of HTTP pages as “not secure”. Beginning in July 2018 with the release of Chrome 68, Chrome will mark all HTTP sites as “not secure”.

The key phrase there is “will mark all”, so it’s time to take that step if you’ve been putting it off for a long time!

GDPR

Yep – those 4 dreaded letters that every UK business is currently scrabbling around trying to comply with. Having SSL and using the https:// protocol is one more step towards being compliant! If your website uses forms to submit data over the internet i.e. to collect business leads, enquiries, recruitment then YOU NEED a SSL certificate otherwise the data being submitted could be read if intercepted. Websites that use HTTPS send data over an encrypted connection so having a SSL certificate it is step in the right direction towards GDPR compliance.

So not only will you keep Google happy, your website higher in the SERPS, your website users happy to deal with you AND have a nice green padlock displayed in Google Chrome and Mozilla FireFox but you’ll also be taking a step towards GDPR compliance.

Get it done now! Special Offer…

The Simple Easy Way to Refresh Your Share Attachment on a Facebook Post

If you’ve ever posted on your Facebook Page and realised the share attachment (link) isn’t showing:

the right image

the right words or …

a spelling mistake EEK!

you may have done as many do and delete the post (cursing under your breath), go back to the page, update it and start over with your post. We’ve all been there.

There is lots of advice out there to use the Facebook Debugger tool for developers to force a refresh for you link, which means going here. https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

BUT I am going to show you a simple, super easy hack to change those details without having to go through the whole rigmarole of going through the debug tool process!

Tell me how to refresh the share attachment!

Here’s my test post, as you can see I don’t want that image to show every time it’s shared on Facebook after I posted it!

I forgot to add the featured image and the meta description doesn’t match what I want it to say either. WHOOPS let’s post it to Facebook anyway for the purposes of this tutorial and get that changed!

The post has been posted to Facebook and I’ve clicked the down arrow on the top right hand of the post but it doesn’t give me any options to change it… Wait for the trick!

I quickly want to change the image and the meta description for this post. So I head on back to my post on my site, upload a new image and change the meta description in Yoast, All In One SEO, Genesis, Divi (whichever SEO Tool you are using for your site!)

IMPORTANT: When using your Featured Image section of WordPress make sure the image size is 1200px x 630px so it displays properly as your link attachment.

So now the page has been updated on the site, let’s head back to the original post that’s live on Facebook and showing the wrong meta data and image…

HINT: Leave abut 10-20 seconds in between now and the next stage, just to be sure!

When you view the post again you will see there aren’t many options available to you. Click the time underneath or by the side of your post and the page will refresh and you will see some new options when you click the down arrow!

Click the “refresh share attachment page”.

You will then get a preview screen – look right now? FAB! If not wait a few more minutes and try again.

Hit the Save button and your new meta data will be flushed through. (This should work first time!)

Your new updated post is now live!

This also works for scheduled posts, in exactly the same way.

Simply hit edit on your scheduled post, then click on the post itself, anywhere will do. This will open your post up in a new page, click the down arrow top right hand corner of your post and click the refresh share attachment and go through exactly the same process. Quick. Simple. Easy!

Eeeek – it happens! Web companies go out of business all the time, with so many having set up shop these past 10 years it’s not surprising small business owners occasionally become unstuck and can’t access their domain name or website to get it moved fast.

Here’s how to get your domain back in your control as soon as possible.

A while ago an old SEO client contacted me to ask if I could move their website to a new host as their developer who hosted their website, was closing down. A simple migration via the new hosting company, free of charge absolutely no problem, it’s free with the new hosting company fee.

We started the process and also moving the domain to the new host.

Alarm bells started ringing when they couldn’t provide cPanel access for migration as it was a shared account, so requested a full back up (which hosting company were happy to sort). Also assured the domain tag had been changed on the domain in order to move to new hosts.

The back up arrived and was sent to the hosts but the hosts realised the back up file name had been changed so couldn’t import the details. A quick email to the old company to request original file, simple enough…

The email bounced back!

The company literally closed its doors, removed their website and deleted their email accounts! No proper back up, but we had the domain right? NO! Name tags hadn’t been changed either and the hosting company of old developer wouldn’t budge on access to it. Here’s the important part…

Whois had the clients company name and trading address attached (super important!) so we were able to regain control of the domain (.co.uk) via nominet using the clients email address and a £12 fee. Luckily when I had first started working with the client 3 years ago I’d insisted that his domains had his contact details (not the developers that they had been set up with).

What Next?

If you’re trying to gain control of a TLD (Top Level Domain like .com, .org etc.), the process may take a bit longer. You can first:

Try and correct the Whois data yourself, you can search the ICANN database if you don’t know which registry your domain is with and attempt to contact them via telephone or email to get the details changed.

File a Whois Complaint with ICANN

From the outset make sure your domains have YOUR contact details attached, particularly if you work with a third party. Your email address, postal address and name/company name so you don’t lose access. Even without the correct email address attached you can still gain control but there’s a process of proof, which takes much longer to verify with official documents. Take heed and check your domains!

Mine have the wrong details – what do I do??

Here’s where to check your domains, who they’re registered to and the contact details http://whois.domaintools.com/

If you have access to your domain via a hosting control panel such as UK2, Fasthosts, 123reg etc. you can login and update your details so they are correct. If you’re developer is using their contact details on your domain here’s a draft email for you to send their way.

Dear XXXXXX,

I was checking my domains and noticed that the Registry Registrant ID details are incorrect, as are the Registry Admin ID.

Would you mind updating these to be:

My name

My Business Address

My Business Contact Number

My Email Address

I’m very happy for the Tech ID to remain as your contact details.

Thanks for your attention in this matter,

Kind Regards, etc.

Facebook relaxed the rules on how you can run a Competition on your Facebook Page at the end of August 2013.

Soooooo many businesses jumped for joy at the thought, no more worrying that your Page would get removed from Facebook for breaching T&C’s not to mention breaking laws in the UK and beyond.

STOP one moment – you may still be not running your competition correctly. Rules still apply, as well as laws!

Running a Competition under Facebook Guidelines

Important to note:

A status “like” is allowable as an entry to your competition or giveaway

A comment is allowable as an entry to your competition or giveaway

Utilize likes as a voting mechanism (This means you can have a photo competition and the number of likes will determine the winner)

Asking fans to “share” by means of an entry to their Facebook wall, is not an allowable form of entry

You still need to exonerate Facebook from any association to your competition or giveaway

You must have Terms and Conditions available to the entrants and a Privacy Policy to hand

Here’s a link to the Promotion Guidelines published by Facebook. See section E

You may be wondering “How is this possible? I can’t squeeze all of this into one update!”

Get Your FREE Tick-list at the end of this post!

You have two options:

1. You can create a note on your Facebook Page with the full Terms and Conditions (remember to detail age and country restrictions, prize, timescale, opening and closing dates for entries). Link to the note you have created in your competition update so that it is clear these are the set Terms and Conditions and Rules that apply to your competition or giveaway. Also in your update (and in your T&C’s if you so wish) to include a statement that Facebook has nothing to do with your promotion, along these lines:

This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook. You are providing your information to [Insert company here] and not to Facebook. By participating in this promotion you agree to a complete release of Facebook from any claims. Participation in this promotion is subject to the official rules.

2. You can create a Blog Post or Page on your website that has your official rules and use this link in your Competition/Giveaway update. (Exactly the same details as above)

Only post one update that has the competition details on, if you require entry by like and commenting this is the easiest way to keep track of those entries.

Administering your competition

Now the fun part, how on earth do you jot down all those names from the likes and comments to pull one out of the hat? Some of the biggest names in Fan Page Apps have created a FREE app that will do it all for you, how awesome is that!! These apps vary in ability, some are live, others are in production. The Woobox app is great for selecting your winner!

Heyo

Tabsite

Woobox

This makes it super easy for you to pick your winner and avoid hours of pulling your hair out!

Good Competition, Bad Competition

An example of a “good competition”:

Name of your Company

We’re having a giveaway! Simply comment on this status what you think the name of our new doll should be to win a £50 Amazon voucher! The winner will be chosen at random on Tuesday 24th September 2013. Only comments posted on this status will be counted towards entry and you must be over 18 and a UK resident. Please see the full terms of entry here on our website http://insert-website-url-here.com

This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook. You are providing your information to [Insert company here] and not to Facebook. By participating in this promotion you agree to a complete release of Facebook from any claims. Participation in this promotion is subject to the official rules.

[Insert compelling image here]

An example of a “bad competition”:

Name of your Company

We’re having a giveaway! Simply comment, like and share this status to be in with a chance of winning a £50 Amazon voucher. Winner will be chosen on Tuesday 24th September. Good Luck!

Notice the lack of information in the “bad” example, no country restrictions, asking to share the status as a form of entry to the competition, no age restrictions, no link to T&C’s and no Facebook release statement.

Just by making sure you follow these simple rules, you can be sure to stay within the Facebook Guidelines. Good Luck with your competitions and giveways!

Now for the bad news…

Use the relaxed guidelines to run a competition or giveaway on your Facebook Page for small giveaways as part of your marketing mix, not as the sole competition/giveaway mechanism that you use consistently. If you really want to grow your Page AND your marketing list you should still use a 3rd Party app to run a competition. It may be OK on occasion to run the odd quick “giveaway a T-Shirt” comp using the above method, but realistically other than seeing your “talking about this” sky rocket, it’s a whole lot of work for very little return.

I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade here, or being a spoil sport because it’s what I do as part of my services, let’s look at a comparison chart below:

As you can see, although the rules being relaxed to make “Like” competitions ok on Facebook, three key elements are missing from the mix. Email gathering to grow your marketing list (make sure you have a Privacy Policy that states this, in addition you will find that Woobox gives you an option for people to tick and give their express permission for you to add them to your email database). The other key element not available is setting up a Fan Gate, to make sure people have to Like your Facebook Page in order to view and enter the competition and essentially grow your Page numbers fast!

A FREE Tick-list to Make Sure You Don’t Miss Any Elements!

Here’s a free tick-list for you to make sure you aren’t missing any of the elements detailed above, that you can use again and again! Enjoy, and let your business friends know too – let’s make sure everyone gets it right first time, all the time.

That most business owners don’t realise…

It isn’t because Facebook is being a spoil sport. It isn’t because of Terms & Conditions and regional laws (although that does come in to a play a little)

The ONE, SINGLE reason a Facebook SHARE competition doesn’t work and isn’t allowed on Facebook is because of PRIVACY.

That’s it.

If you’ve ever posted something on a Facebook Business Page and looked at who’s shared your post you will see a message “only some Shares are shown due to Privacy Settings”.

That’s right – you could have 1000 shares on your post with 1000 hopeful winners, and you will ONLY see a small portion of them. So by asking people to enter by “Sharing” an image, you immediately alienate those that have high privacy settings activated on their accounts, which means those people who are hopeful of winning actually have ZERO chance of winning your goodies.

I know why people do it – it’s a fast avenue to boosting your page interaction and likes as everyone loves a freebie, but unfortunately it doesn’t work for the end user.

What Should You Do?

So if you run a timeline competition you should only be asking people to like the post or image and/or comment on the post or image, remembering of course to post a link to your T&Cs and quoting Facebook Page Terms ” A complete release of Facebook by each entrant or participant.” And “Acknowledgement that the promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook.”

You can download a copy of my FREE tick-list here.

Entrants that like or comment can then be exported to a third party app for you to choose a winner as these are PUBLIC whereas shares aren’t.

Remember you also can’t TAG as entry to a competition on Facebook either. So you can’t ask people to tag a photo to enter a competition in exchange for a prize.

You can also run competitions on third party apps, which are cost effective and have added benefits such as collecting emails for marketing purposes and installing a “Like Gate” to ensure people have to like your page before they can enter.

To recap:

SHARE and TAG = NO!

LIKE and COMMENT – YES!

Got something to add? Please enter it in the comments below!

Yep. That’s right folks, the 20% text rule in Cover Images on Facebook is now GONE! KAPUT! OVER!

The Page rules were updated Monday 1st July 2013

The 20% text rule STILL applies to advertising though, and that includes images that you use for Sponsored Posts that inlcude links. If an image is included in that link it MUST have less than 20% text (Facebook have given users a new tool so that they can change the preview image before making the post live). Make sure you do this as Facebook will quickly suspend adverts and Sponsored stories that break these rules.
