The iPhone 4 design has been the most revolutionary to date with its sleek form factor and incredible 640×900 Retina Display. The screen size has always been 3.5 inches for the iPhone since its original device back in 2007.

Right now we know of a few next-generation iPhone candidates in testing. These prototype phones are floating around Apple HQ in thick, locked shells in order to disguise the exterior design to “undisclosed” employees. We know of two next-generation iPhones in testing with a larger display: the iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2. These phones are in the PreEVT stage of development and are codenamed N41AP (5,1) and N42AP (5,2). Because Apple reserves certain models for internal-only usage (such as the N96 phone we previously reported on), we’re not sure which of the two devices will make its way into the world later this year.

Apple will not increase the screen size and not increase the resolution to go along with it. they will actually add pixels to the display. The display of the new iPhone 5 will be the same 1.94 inches wide but will receive a growth spurt to 3.45 inches tall, making the next generation iPhone looking long and slender. The new resolution will be 16:9 ratio meaning that 16:9 videos can play full screen at their intended aspect ratio.

iOS 6 is in final stages as well and sports a newly designed home screen with a fifth row of icons and an extended application user interface that allows access to more content. Apple will accomplish this with Retina Display due to the use of more pixels in the new device.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, has placed orders from suppliers in Asia for screens that are bigger than the 3.5- inch size now on the smartphone, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had worked closely on the redesigned phone before his death in October, one person said. [...]

Apple has been working on the new device since before the current iPhone 4S model was introduced last October, said one person with knowledge of the project. Jobs, who had gone on medical leave from Apple starting last January, played a key role in developing the phone, this person said.

There are numerous publications reporting from their sources about the larger screen and the October release date of the next generation iPhone.

Production is set to begin next month for the screens, which measure at least 4 inches diagonally compared with 3.5 inches on the iPhone 4S, the latest phone from Apple, the people said.

Apple Inc plans to use a larger screen on the next-generation iPhone and has begun to place orders for the new displays from suppliers in South Korea and Japan, people familiar with the situation said on Wednesday. [...]

There have been rumors that the new smaller version of the iPad will be identical to the current 9.7 inch iPad just a scaled down version. It will include a 2048×1536 resolution display also with a pixel density of around 326 ppi, the same as the iPhone 4S.

Steve Jobs did not like the idea of a scaled down iPad, calling them terrible and dead on arrival. He was noted for saying, no one will want to watch videos on an iPod, and that Apple was not at all interested in making a phone. Steve Jobs noted that competitors stretched out the smartphone apps instead of making quality apps that actually fit the screen.

Steve Jobs’ tag line for the original iPad was “…our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price“.

We can only wait and see what type of magic Apple will pull in the next coming year, this could get real good.
