Dean Iverson has been writing software professionally for more than 15 years. He is employed by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, where he is a rich client application developer. Johan Vos started to work with Java in 1995. As part of the Blackdown team, he helped port Java to Linux. Greg Luck founded Ehcache in 2003. He regularly speaks at conferences, writes and codes. He has also founded and maintains the JPam and Spnego open source projects, which are security focused. Prior to joining Terracotta in 2009, Greg was Chief Architect at Wotif.com where he provided technical leadership as the company went from a single product startup to a billion dollar public company with multiple product lines. Before that Greg was a consultant for ThoughtWorks with engagements in the US and Australia in the travel, health care, geospatial, banking and insurance industries. Before doing programming, Greg managed IT. He was CIO at Virgin Blue, Tempo Services, Stamford Hotels and Resorts and Australian Resorts. He is a Chartered Accountant, and spent 7 years with KPMG in small business and insolvency.

Peter Hilton is a senior solution architect and Operations Director at Lunatech Research. Peter works on web application architecture, design and construction, with technical project management. His interests include Java web application frameworks, agile software development process and practices, and web-based collaboration.

Since 2010, Peter has been a committer on the Play framework open-source project. Peter is currently writing a Play 2 for Scala in Action book for Manning Publications, with co-authors and Lunatech colleagues Erik Bakker and Francisco Canedo.

Peter recently presented Play at Java conferences in Norway (JavaZone 2011) and Sweden (Jfokus 2012). In 2012, Peter will present Play at conferences in Poland (Geecon) and the Netherlands (GOTO Amsterdam).

Paul has overseen MAX’s application to rapidly field self-driving robotic cars, unmanned air vehicles, factory and road-side automation applications, and a wide range of advanced robots and automaton applications. He fielded a self-driving autonomous robotic dune buggy in the historic 2005 Grand Challenge race across the Mojave desert and a self-driving autonomous car in the 2007 Urban Challenge through a city landscape. His work has been featured in numerous televised and print media including the Discovery Channel, a theatrical documentary, scientific journals, trade magazines, and international press. Since 2008, Paul has also been working as the chief software engineer, CTO, and roboticist automating rock star Neil Young’s LincVolt, a 1959 Lincoln Continental retro-fitted as a fully autonomous extended range electric vehicle. Paul has been an engineer, author of books and articles on Java, frequent speaker on Java, and entrepreneur in the robotics and software space for over 20 years. He is a member of the Java Champions program, recipient of three Duke Awards including a Gold Duke and Lifetime Achievement Award, has showcased Java-based robots at five JavaOne keynotes, and is a frequent JavaOne speaker and show floor participant. He holds a B.S.E.E. from Rutgers University and an M.S.E.E. from the University of Virginia.

Andrey is the lead language designer working on Project Kotlin at JetBrains. He started his career at Borland working on language implementations for MDA support. He spent a few years teaching in college and developed courses in Basics of OOP, Software Design and Programming Practice. Andrey joined JetBrains to start Project Kotlin in 2010. He serves as a Java Community Process expert in a group working on JSR-335 ("Project Lambda"). Andrey is a frequent conference speaker delivering talks at venues like OSCON, StrangeLoop and Devoxx.

Bert is a Fellow at Luminis in the Netherlands. Next to his customer assignments he is responsible for stimulating innovation, knowledge sharing, coaching, technology choices and presales activities. Besides his day job he is a Java User Group leader for NLJUG, the Dutch Java User Group. A frequent speaker on Enterprise Java and Software Architecture related topics at international conferences (e.g. Devoxx, JavaOne, etc) as well as an author and member of the editorial advisory board for Dutch software development magazine: Java Magazine. In 2008, Bert was honored by being awarded the coveted title of Java Champion by an international panel of Java leaders and luminaries.

Fabiane is a computer scientist who is passionate about creating software that will positively change the world we live in. She was the architect of the Brazilian Healthcare Information System, considered the largest JavaEE application in the world and winner of the 2005 Duke's Choice Award. She leaded several communities, including the JavaTools Community at java.net, where 800+ open source projects were born. She is a frequent speaker at conferences in Brazil and abroad, author of several technical articles and member of the program committee of several conferences as JavaOne, OSCON, TDC. She was chosen a Java Champion by Sun Microsystems as a recognition of her contribution to the Java ecosystem. Currently, she works as a tools expert at ToolsCloud and as chief architect at RBS, where she is helping to shape new disruptive Internet based services.

Chris Richardson is a developer and architect with over 20 years of experience. He is a Java Champion and the author of POJOs in Action, which describes how to build enterprise Java applications with POJOs and frameworks such as Spring and Hibernate. Chris is the founder of the original CloudFoundry.com and works on cloud technology. He has a computer science degree from the University of Cambridge in England and lives in Oakland, CA with his wife and three children.

Stephan Janssen is a serial entrepreneur that has founded several successful organizations such as the Belgian Java User Group (BeJUG) in 1996, JCS Int. in 1998, JavaPolis in 2002 and now Parleys.com in 2006. He has been using Java since its early releases in 1995 with experience of developing and implementing real world Java solutions in the finance and manufacturing industries. Today Stephan is the CTO of the Java Competence Center at RealDolmen. He was selected by BEA Systems as the first European (independent) BEA Technical Director. He has also been recognized by the Server Side as one of the 54 Who is Who in Enterprise Java 2004. Sun has recognized in 2005 his efforts for the Java Community and has engaged him in the Java Champion project. He has spoken at numerous Java and JUG conferences around the world.

Mattias Karlsson is a Java Champion and the Jfokus conference organizer. In this feature interview we talked about Mattias' efforts in starting and maintaining an annual Java developer focused conference. All areas of conference organization are discussed including venue, content selection, organization, funding and finding your niche with developers.

Jonas Bonér is working at Terracotta Inc. with a focus on strategy, product development & architecture and technical evangelism. Terracotta provides software that delivers enterprise-class infrastructure services to applications transparently at runtime with minimal required application code changes. Prior to Terracotta, Jonas was a senior software engineer at the JRockit team at BEA Systems, where he was working on runtime tools, JVM support for AOP and technology evangelism. He is the founder of the AspectWerkz AOP framework and committer to the Eclipse AspectJ 5 project. Jonas is a frequent speaker on AOP and
other emerging technologies (JavaOne, JAOO, eWorld, Java Pro Live!, Javapolis, AOSD conferences etc.).

Feature Interview

Patrick Curran is Chair of the Java Community Process organization. In this role he oversees the activities of the JCP's Program Management Office including evolving the process and the organization, managing its membership, guiding specification leads and experts through the process, chairing Executive Committee meetings, and managing the JCP.org web site.

Patrick has worked in the software industry for more than 25 years, and at Sun and then Oracle for 20 years. He has a long-standing record in conformance testing, and before joining the JCP he led the Java Conformance Engineering team in Sun's Client Software Group. He was also chair of Sun's Conformance Council, which was responsible for defining Sun's policies and strategies around Java conformance and compatibility.

Patrick has participated actively in several consortia and communities including the W3C (as a member of the Quality Assurance Working Group and co-chair of the Quality Assurance Interest Group), and OASIS (as co-chair of the Test Assertions Guidelines Technical Committee). Patrick's blog is here.

Pascal is 35 years old, lives in Belgium, father of two, and works as a software developer and architect during his day job, mostly implementing high performance and highly concurrent stuff for payment systems in Java, at a large european ISV. During his much more interesting night job, he has been contributing to the openSUSE project for around 15 years and has been elected on the project board several times, including for the current period.

Pascal is also part of the core team that organizes the FOSDEM conference each year in Brussels, Belgium, with FOSDEM 2012 being his 8th, at least as far as he can remember. His job on the team encompasses several activities, such as managing the developer rooms, the main program and speakers, press andpromotion, artwork, technical infrastructure, etc.

The annual User Group Summit was focused on fostering communication between user group leaders and Oracle, the Leaders’ Conference was three days of learning, networking, sharing and collaborating about user groups and Oracle products & technologies. The summit included user groups focused on Java, MySQL, Applications, Database, Technology, and Industry. This interview features six JUG leaders from five continents giving a world perspective on JUGs around the world. These leaders represent JUGs that have been in existence for seventeen years and as short as one year.

Rajmahendra(Raj) Hegde has been a Java developer since 2000. Since then he started working in various technologies in Java eco-system. He is working for Logica as Project Lead/Architect. He is a User Group lead for Java User Group – Chennai. He have contributed to JSR-331 and Scalaxia.com.He is interested in JEE, OSGi, JavaFX, JVM Languages.

John Yeary is the president and founder of the Greenville Java Users Group and serves as one of the Java User Groups Community Leaders, and is the Java.net Enterprise Technology Community Leader.. That group is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. John is a member of the NetBeans Dream Team and has worked on JavaOne as a technical track reviewer, the JavaOne Planning Committee for JavaOne 2011, and was on the selection committee for the Duke's Choice Award for JavaOne 2011. John John is a board member and treasurer for Southeast Linuxfest Foundation which runs the successful SELF conference in the US Southeast.

Frank Greco is the founder of the New York Java Special Interest Group (NYJavaSIG), one of the largest Java Users Groups (JUGs) on the planet with 7,000 members. Frank has a long history as a "Champion" of the Java Platform; he taught a developer track session at the very first Java Day back in September 1995 in New York and started the NYJavaSIG that afternoon. Frank has been involved with software development for over 10 years and working with financial services architectures, innovative user interfaces and cloud computing. Currently Frank works for Kaazing and helps large enterprises leverage WebSocket and the new HTML5 Web Communications stack.

Ben Evans has lived in "Interesting Times" in technology - he was the lead performance testing engineer for the Google IPO, worked on the initial UK trials of 3G networks with BT, built award-winning websites for some of Hollywood's biggest hits of the 90s, rearchitected and reimagined technology helping some of the most vulnerable people in the UK and has worked on everything from some of the UKs very first ecommerce sites, through to multi-billion dollar currency trading systems. He helps to run the London Java Community, and represents the JUG on the Java SE/EE Executive Committee. His first book "The Well-Grounded Java Developer" (with Martijn Verburg) has just been published by Manning.

Daniel de Oliveira is an IT Community Leader in Brasilia, capital of Brazil. He founded and has been the Leader for more than fifteen years of the Brasilia Java Users Group (www.dfjug.org), one of the top JUG in the world, with more than 55.000 developer members. He is a Java Champion, a book writer and writes articles about Java environment in several magazines. Working as a Consultant for more then 10 years has been attending client banks, such as Banco de Brasilia, Caixa Economica, Banco do Brasil, Ministry of Planning and now in the Brazilian Space Agency.

Badr ElHouari co-founded the MoroccoJUG in 2009. The MoroccoJUG (The only Java User Group in Morocco) aims to provide a platform for all Java enthusiasts to network, exchange ideas, share knowledge and help each other in order to strengthen the Java community in Morocco. He is working now as a technical expert at Morpho Maroc.

NetBeans IDE 7.1 introduces support for JavaFX 2.0 by enabling the full compile/debug/profile development cycle for JavaFX 2.0 applications. The release also provides significant Swing GUI Builder enhancements, CSS3 support, and tools for visual debugging of Swing and JavaFX user interfaces. Additional highlights include Git support integrated into the IDE, new PHP debugging features, various JavaEE and Maven improvements, and more.

Alok Patel is a Principal Product Manager with Java Mobile team. He helps drive the Operator Network APIs integration in Oracle Java Wireless Client (OJWC), industry-leading Java ME implementation from Oracle.

The Network API is a set of APIs provided by network operators to enable client/server access to major cellular network functionality such as messaging, location, and payment. It requires only the basic functionality of the mobile terminal, allowing for wide deployment in emerging markets such as BRICA. MIDlets on lower-end phones, hybrid applications on powerful feature phones—all can use Network API to enable a full range of related applications.

Vinicius Senger has been working with software development the last 20 years. Along with Yara he founded Globalcode, the largest Brazilian educational center specialized in software development. V has presented more than 200 talks about Software Development, Java, Java EE and open-source hardware and nowadays is investing in a new company for open-source home automation and educational robotics.

Yara Senger is the partner and director of teacher education and Globalcode, graduated from the University of Sao Paulo, Sao Carlos, has significant experience in Brazil and abroad in developing solutions to critical Java. She is the co-creator of Java programs Academy and Academy of Web Developer, accumulating over 1000 hours in the classroom teaching Java. She currently serves as the President of Sou Java.

In this interview they talk about Gobalcode's 10th anniversary and the interesting challenges that faced over the last 10 years.

Peter Korn is Oracle's Accessibility Principal – their senior individual contributor on accessibility. He is also Technical Manager of the AEGIS project, leading an EC-funded €12.6m investment building accessibility into future mainstream ICT (FP7-ICT224348).

Mr. Korn co-developed and co-implemented the Java Accessibility API, and developed the Java Access Bridge for Windows. He helped design the open source GNOME Accessibility architecture found on most modern UNIX and GNU/Linux systems, and consulted on accessibility support for OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Thunderbird, and other applications. Prior to Sun/Oracle, Peter co-developed the outSPOKEN for Windows screen reader.

Mr. Korn represented Sun/Oracle on TEITAC for the Section 508/255 refresh, co-led the OASIS ODF Accessibility subcommittee, and sits on INCITS V2 where he is contributing to ISO 13066: defining AT-IT interoperability standards including specifically the Java Accessibility API.

Ofir Leitner is the architect of one of LWUIT's key features - the HTMLComponent which allows rendering HTML within LWUIT applications and to embed web-flows inside apps. Ofir is also responsible for LWUIT's bidirectional and RTL support and for the accessibility work that is being done these days in LWUIT.

Ben Evans has lived in "Interesting Times" in technology - he was the lead performance testing engineer for the Google IPO, worked on the initial UK trials of 3G networks with BT, built award-winning websites for some of Hollywood's biggest hits of the 90s, rearchitected and reimagined technology helping some of the most vulnerable people in the UK and has worked on everything from some of the UKs very first ecommerce sites, through to multi-billion dollar currency trading systems. He helps to run the London Java Community, and represents the JUG on the Java SE/EE Executive Committee. His first book "The Well-Grounded Java Developer" (with Martijn Verburg) has just been published by Manning.

Martijn Verburg (aka 'the Diabolical Developer') herds Cats in the Java/open source communities and is constantly humbled by the creative power to be found there. Currently he resides in London where he co-leads the London JUG (a JCP EC member), runs a couple of open source projects & drinks too much beer at his local pub. You can find him online moderating at the Javaranch or discussing (ranting?) subjects on the Prgorammers Stack Exchange site. Most recently he's become a regular speaker at conferences on Java, open source and software development and has recently wrapped up his first Manning title - "The Well-Grounded Java Developer" with his co-author Ben Evans.

In this interview Ben, Martijn, and Yara talk about the JCP Executive Committee Elections, JSR 348, and the Adopt-a-JSR program.

Stephan Janssen is a serial entrepreneur that has founded several successful organizations such as the Belgian Java User Group (BeJUG) in 1996, JCS Int. in 1998, JavaPolis in 2002 and now Parleys.com in 2006. He has been using Java since its early releases in 1995 with experience of developing and implementing real world Java solutions in the finance and manufacturing industries. Today Stephan is the CTO of the Java Competence Center at RealDolmen. He was selected by BEA Systems as the first European (independent) BEA Technical Director. He has also been recognized by the Server Side as one of the 54 Who is Who in Enterprise Java 2004. Sun has recognized in 2005 his efforts for the Java Community and has engaged him in the Java Champion project. He has spoken at numerous Java and JUG conferences around the world.
